Well, tonight we're going to learn how you can season your pots and pans so that they'll be easier to clean up after you've eaten. Here's Chef Tyler Hart in our evening home department. Hi. This evening, I would like to show you something very unusual. I would like to show you how to season a frying pan. So far, so good. You say, right? When you season the frying pan, you add some salt to a frying pan, which is already on the stove and already hot with this frying pan. You use a piece of old newspaper and you start to squeeze the salt in the frying pan, you just rub it in like this. You can use this with any frying pan and could be one of those iron one or even stainless steel on any frying pan except Teflon. A Teflon frying pan. You do not season the right one. Season the frying pan so it doesn't stick any food anymore. So get this real hot, this side and you start describing and scraping. You take the salt out and put it in about to be careful. It is solid. It's very hot. You wipe it out. And now you have in this frying pan a little bit of oil and you let it stand for a couple of minutes. Now, this way, your frying pan is seasoned. And from now on, you do not watch this frying pan any more. You just when you want to take something with a little bit of oil to any frying pan, you seasoned that your beans, vegetable meat, whatever you have, you just started, stood up with a spoon and you take it out and you see nothing sticks and you just wipe it out with a towel.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=129.389,225.68"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That's all there is to life defying. And I see you. Thank you, Chef Tel, and good evening. Well, up, up and away in the balloon. This is Red's hawk, who was the pilot of this hot air balloon. And you'll be able to see plenty of these balloons at the Preakness Cultural Festival balloon race right here at Patterson Park on Saturday, May the 13th. Now it's the third day of the Preakness Cultural Festival, 11 day in May. Celebration. And there'll be all kinds of things happening here. The noise you're hearing is what's going to get me off the ground very shortly. Now, the winner of the race is the first balloon to get across the Eastern shore line in case of bad weather. The race will be held on Sunday here at the same location. Now, besides the balloon race, also the other thing. All day long, and it's called the Paterson Park Preakness Party. There'll be a concert by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and a presentation by the Army National Guard Band. They'll also be a Baltimore Colts. Just a short time ago was National Save Your Vision Week. It's very important for all of you to have your eyes checked for glaucoma. It's a simple procedure. I'm available such as this are available in most locations. Let's look at how the procedure is accomplished. I'm Dr. Jim Lasco and this evening on the Health Department, I'd like to talk to you about glaucoma. One very serious eye condition, which can lead to the loss of your sight. Now, glaucoma is an eye condition in which there is increased pressure on the inside of the eyeball, leading to discomfort in the eye and sometimes redness. Now, an acute attack of glaucoma is seldom missed because it's a very painful red eye and can be precipitated or led to by some over-the-counter sleeping medications and also some over-the-counter medications or decongestion, such as something you might take in a cold. But the majority of people who have glaucoma have simple glaucoma, which is just eye discomfort and no particular redness. A lot of people will just go ahead and buy some eye washes and that's a bad thing. What you should do is have your eye pressure tested. This is one of the ways in which it's done. It's a pressure to monitor in which you just put your chin here and a little puff of air measures the pressure inside your eye.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=343.47,451.99"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Let's look at the procedure as it's being performed on Rabbit by Dr. Magee. It's a very simple, painless procedure. And a little puff of air shoots out against the eyeball, and it measures the pressure that's on everyone who is over the age of 20 should have a glaucoma test as part of their routine health care. If you have any eye discomfort, don't resort to the use of over-the-counter eye washes. See your eye doctor and have your vision tested for glaucoma. Now let's join the discoveries department. Good evening. I'm in a store where you can get delicious baked products at excellent prices at Silvers Bakery Surplus Store at 5121 Park Heights Avenue. You can come in here and get bread and cookies and cakes and pies and donuts. Really delicious. Sylvia's Bakery has been serving the Baltimore public since 1907. Probably your parents and grandparents get baked goods from Sylvia's, and they have 36 stores in the area, and there are two of them where the prices are even better than at their regular stores. That's because they sell surplus products. The products go out to the other silver stores one day and then the next day they're brought into here. And that's the only time that those products are sold. Now, the prices here are up to 60% less than the prices at Silvers, other stores. And you can get a loaf of bread for as little as $0.25. The service here is as good as the outstanding service that you get at all of the other Silvers outlets. And it's convenient to shop here because they are open seven days a week from 930 until five Monday through Saturday and from 830 until three on Sunday. That's Silvers Bakery Surplus Store at 5121 Arcades avenue in my opinion there and evenings.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=452.35,568.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Best bet. Next on evening, we'll meet a man who designed an atomic bomb. Time. You know, there are a lot of very avid fishermen here in Baltimore, people who could fish for days and days and never get tired of it. I'm not quite as avid myself, but I do enjoy fishing. And there's a place and equipment company on Route 40 that sells bait and equipment that we all should know about. And Bob Smith will tell us all about that in just a few minutes. First to chef Tel Earhart in our home department. Hi. This evening, I would like to talk to you and show you how you make cucumber salad a little bit a different way. What you do first, you have your whole cucumbers, you peel them so they look like that. I don't have to show you how to feed a cucumber. You slice your cucumber will fine. You can use a machine or one of those slices, whatever you want. I do it by hand because it looks more efficient and it goes fast at all. You just like you. Come on. Almost the same slices. Then you have them sliced down and put all your cucumber slices in a bowl. I use the glass board so you can see what happens. And now comes the most important step for this cucumber salad. You put some salt on this cucumber salad. Just a little bit. Not very much. And now you let the cucumber stay for probably 15 minutes. And after 50 minutes, you will have a lots of water on the bowl. Let me show you. I did this one 50 minutes ago and you see the water comes out of this bowl. That's all the water in the cucumber. You don't want this in the salad.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=569.69,771.51"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If you drain this out your cucumbers, I will stay much more graceful. Now you have the cucumber. You add a little bit of vinegar, red wine, meaning, of course, a little bit of oil, not very much. Whatever oil you place, a little bit of pepper, a little bit of salt. And to give this nice flavor, I add a little bit of fresh chopped Dylan. This fresh subdial is available right now and it's really nice. It gives a nice flavor. Put it in the also you mix it up. We can do the same at home. Just use your hand. It's much easier to make a salad with your hands because you have a feeling for it. If you use spoons and all kinds of other things, you don't have a feeling for it. You put it out here and you see how nice it looks now. Fleshy slice of tomato on the top. So get a little bit of color just like this. I wish you good appetite and lots of luck with the cucumber salad and. These are eucalyptus leaves from which I'm taking a few off here for the particular little tip we're going to show you now. The eucalyptus is a beautiful tree, an enormous tree, one of the most enormous trees in the world. A native of Australia and Tasmania, a tree whose leaves have a very interesting oil. The oil glands are located in the leaves and pharmaceutically. The oil has been used for things like typhoid and malaria because of its germ killing properties. But what we're interested in is the fact that there's a very aromatic presence to this smell as well. And so that involves perhaps people who have things like asthma, sinus problems, anything relating to the bronchial tree.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=772.35,865.34"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We get a pot of boiling water like we have here. When the water comes to a boil, you get yourself a handful or so of leaves and the fresh leaves are usually better and just break up some of the leaves and put them into the boiling water. And instantly you can smell this aromatic presence of the eucalyptus. And incidentally, this has a kind of antiseptic and perhaps even germ killing property. Now, I know that not everybody is going to be living near a eucalyptus tree. So they have eucalyptus, eucalyptus oil, pure oil of eucalyptus, and it has the same aromatic properties as the eucalyptus leaves. So they could be used in somewhat the same manner. A very simple, very easy thing that can be done while you're eating breakfast, lunch or dinner doesn't really involve any any great time. Just sit there and get the benefits. All right. Next up, the Discovery Department. It's spring time and it's time to go fishing again. You remember the painful fishing you did as a kid? Well, now I'm sure that you've advanced to a little more advanced type gear. I found a shop where you can purchase just about everything that you need for fishing. It's called the Bass Pro Shop, and it's located at 9239 Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City. And Bass Pro Shop has everything for the fishermen, including clothing and boats. You have Meier's boats and aircraft boats, model boats, and they also sell and service Chrysler engines. And they have an excellent selection of lures and live baits, including minnows, crawdads and held remotes and very fine rods and reels. As a matter of fact, if you don't find a rod and reel that really suits you, they will custom build a rod for you and they'll sell you the materials so that you can custom build rod yourself.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=866.03,972.31"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Prices here range from about $14 for a rod and reel combination to about $200 for the same thing. And the service is outstanding. Everyone who's here is a fisherman, all the folks who are in sales, and Paul Gove, who's one of the owners, is really a character in his own right. And it's very convenient because it's centrally located to the five manmade lakes in the state of Maryland. And they have great hours. They're open from five in the morning until nine in the evening, Monday through Saturday and five in the morning until five in the evening on Sunday. And that means that you can pick up your life mate on the way out to fish. That's the Bass Pro Shop at 9239, Baltimore National Pike in my opinion there and evenings best bet next on evening on 125 our kiss. Do you know where you'll find one of the best views of Baltimore? Well, it's from atop the 1000 foot tower, that candelabra tower above Channel 13 on Television Hill. And Bob Smith will take us on a hair raising trip up that tower this evening. But first, here's Dr. Michael Fox in our home department. Good evening. This is Dr. Michael Fox again with another pet tip. I'm at the Friendly Beasties Pet Store on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C. And with us tonight are two little Australian gray parakeets. These little birds make exquisite pets and they're very easy to take care for. I have a few tips for you. First, if you want your bed to talk, you best not buy a pair. It must be very attached to you. If you're going to teach it how to mimic your voice, you should get your little bird shortly after it melted. Because the younger it is, the better it will be imprinted upon you so that you can teach it all kinds of tricks.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=973.54,1194.82"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"These little parakeets will build and coo with you. They'll either kind of make love to you and whisper sweet nothings. And they're very intelligent animals, too. They're not dumb. These two here and a little bit too young yet to see the sex difference. But the males have this little band across the nose as a female has. But this a slightly different color. It's more purple violet in the male. Now I advise you to get a cage. Something like this, for your bed. This kind of dimension with adequate perches and various toys because they're always playful and very curious. They like to have a mirror, sometimes a swing or a ladder. And it's a good idea to for the food to make sure that you keep them in dispenses. Otherwise the seeds will go everywhere. So one bird in the cage can be great fun, too. Fun for the birds. Good night. Coming up next is Laura Charles. Thank you, Dr. Fox, and good evening. The bounty is the kind of place that usually someone brings you to the first time around. But when you come back again, you'll pretend that you discovered it all by yourself. It's off the beaten path. It's in the Orchard Center of the 1500 block of Joppa Road. Outside it says there are spirits and fun, etc.. Let's go inside the bounty and check it out. Inside you'll find a very rustic atmosphere. It's a good place to have an afternoon, drinks after work, drinks, lunch, dinner, supper or late night snack. They also have live entertainment here at the Valley. Wednesday through Sunday modifies with Elmo. Thank you. And it's a little bit different from the disc on the rock scene. The music more is like a contemporary folk.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=1195.99,1296.67"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And if you like the music of James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffet, and you'll like the music here at the Valley. Now the future of the house is called the Valley Burger. Giant hamburger, charcoal, seven ounces served on a Kaiser roll with pickles. And that's not a bad deal. They also boast that they have the parties down here serving the first frosty mug in town. Still got my fingers chilled. Now, besides that, the food and the entertainment, they also have interesting people. Jim Joyner, who's an artist around town, does sketches, charcoal sketches of people if they want to me and I'll let you have a look down at the Valley and the Orchard Center on 1500 block of Joppa Road. Dr. School is next in the health department. He's flown to Denver for. On to the mountains. So far we. Good evening. I'm Dr. Jim Weiskopf. For those of you who have worn glasses and have wondered about contact lenses, I thought we'd spend a little bit of time talking about contact lenses, the different kinds of air and exactly how they work. And maybe then you can decide whether contact lens is right for you. There are basically two different types of contact lenses, and I have them right here. This is the so-called hard contact lens that you see here, and it can be available tinted to any particular shade. I've got a blue one here and a gray one. And then we have the soft contact lens, which is a little bit hard to see, but I think you can see it shining right here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517#t=1297.15,1398.55"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114458/file/217517/transcript/62051/annotation/11","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And of course, it's much bigger than the hard contact lens. Now, the contact lens is actually a soft plastic disc that has two surfaces. The inner surface must lie perfectly across the front of your eye or the cornea of your eye and must fit it with no room to spare. It rides sort of on a layer of tears over the front of your eye. The outside surface of the contact lens is the surface that helps to change the vision as it's coming in to refract it so that it's right for you. The advantage of the contact lens over a regular pair of glasses is that peripheral vision. In other words, if I put the glasses on here, you'll see that out to the side I don't see so well because the glass doesn't go out that way. But the contact lens does make it possible for you to have good peripheral vision. One of the disadvantages, of course, is that it does increase your sensitivity to light. And if you aren't very, very careful with a contact lens, you must keep it meticulously clean. You must make sure that no foreign bodies get in your eye and you must stay out of areas which are drafty or windy. Because if you get any particles behind the lens, it can scratch your eye and cause terrible problems and perhaps even difficulties with your vision. Now let's join the discoveries department. Good evening. This evening, I've got something a little bit different for you. It's on silent film because of interference on the TV tower. That's right. Here it is. A TV tower on television Hill. And when you look straight down, it seems as if you must be miles up from here. You can see all the way to the Inner harbor. And gradually you get to feel a little more relaxed up there. And I went a little bit higher. Now, here's a view all the way around from the top of the TV tower.
