These are two of four Maryland schools singled out for recognition in the National Blue Ribbon Schools program. In fact, they're among only 250 schools selected from some 105,000 nominated nationwide. It's recognition for all the things that make a school successful student performance, leadership, staff development, parental involvement and community support. And it's not an empty title. These schools now take on new responsibility as blue ribbon role models. Education officials are asking them to share their know how with other schools as mentors linked with sister schools. Howard High, in particular, can teach volumes about succeeding, as it has with a diverse student population from a wide range of backgrounds. And there's plenty to share about its award winning student coaching and counseling program and its top notch math and writing programs. We salute the students, teachers, parents, administrators and community partners, all of whom have contributed to the success of Maryland's blue ribbon schools. But I can tell you, on a more serious note, Sal, you know, usually when it gets like this in schools and the city and the county and elsewhere, you know what they do? They basically close it down because of too much heat, but because of so many snow days that have been taken during the blizzard of 96, they decided today, well, you know, hey, we can deal with it a little bit. So they did go ahead and leave schools open in the city and in the county. So, yeah, it's certainly been a school year of extreme stand. But what is schools do if the heat just becomes unbearable? It's hard because they were so young. It hit the girls friends. It hit their family. Yes, very hard. It was the death this morning. A 15 year old, Marci Cooper, who was struck and killed by a pickup truck on Wilkins Avenue just up the corner from Bentley Street. Marcy's identical twin, Casey, was also hit. I thought I mean, a laptop. And then I went outside on the pavement, looked and there was a body lying in the street. And I thought it was a little kid lying out here because the girl was really screaming that really screaming. She had her knees were busted in. Her arm was busted. Along this portion of Hawkins Avenue, neighbors say crossing the street is always risky. They run up down here like crazy, these cars. It might just be way. It's not clear if speed is a factor in this case. Police are investigating. But according to people who live on this street, it looks more as if the two girls had stepped out from behind a parked vehicle when they were hit. The girls had crossed the street for sodas before heading off to move on high.
