Retired from the Baltimore City Police Department. And then you got into a whole new career. Oh my god, this is unreal. What had happened? I was home one day and a girlfriend of mine had called me and said she had some tickets to the Richard Scherr Show. But I wasn't in any mood for anything. I was sort of upset about having to retire. And then I had gone through this awful divorce. And so she said, well, Sandy, let's get out of the house. Let's just go. So the morning that we were gonna go, she couldn't make it, but I had the ticket. So I went anyway. But while I was there, I think it's the green room that you sit in and wait to go on. There was a lady there by the name of Gay Young who was our casting. agent. She was looking for people for a lookalike, celebrity lookalike contest. So when she came over to me, she said, Hi, my name is Gay Young. And she gave me one of her cards. She said, we're having a celebrity lookalike contest and I want you to enter. And I was saying like, please. She said, I'm totally serious. It's the Nell Carter. So I said, okay, who's Nell Carter? By me working from three to 11, I didn't watch television. So I I just took the card, took it home, and just forgot about it. But she called me two days later and said, I really think you should do this. So when I got up to the Reisterstown Plaza, it was all of these folks who look like celebrities, but I was the only Nell Carter look alike. And lo and behold, they had the competition and I won. So because you were... night work. You never got a chance to see the show. I didn't know who she was. I didn't know who she was until the day after the competition. But the people in the mall were saying, oh my God, there's Mel Carter. And I was, okay, whoever she is, okay, fine. Do you think it looked like Mel Carter? I didn't think so until I met her. She was appearing at the Meyerhof and we went down to see the show and I asked, could I see her because I wanted her to know that I was in a competition, you know. But when I first met her, she just looked at me and I looked at her and I said, oh my God. So she said, you really do look like me. I said, no, sweetie, you look like me because I'm the oldest. So it was just, it was unreal. Well, maybe your daddy knew her mom. Well, I asked her about her grandfather. I didn't ask her about her dad because I didn't want my mom to hear it. But we just had a nice dialog. It was really nice. It was really nice. But then from there, I thought that would be it. But boy, was I in for a surprise. All right, now you've got this commercial that Brian Costantini said won't go away. That won't go away! of three, three and a half years is still running. I thought it was gonna be like just for six weeks. What did you try out for the part? What had happened, I had sent some, after I did the lookalike contest, this lady convinced me to get some headshots done and send them to different agencies. So I sent one to Central Casting and Tale of Royale. I only sent one. You're supposed to send 10. I couldn't afford it. So I sent one. So Tale of Royale called me and said, go up to channel 13, they may have something for you. but I had no idea it was a commercial. No idea because I never did a commercial before. I've not done anything. So while you're sitting there, the cameras, the lights, you got the lighters. This lady is doing this to my face and I said, oh my God, this is Hollywood. I'm saying, like, bitch. Oh, I loved it. I loved it. She's doing my face and Did you like it? touching my lips up and oh it was it was fantastic and i said well what it's not gonna last you know this this will be it but after that commercial aired i got calls from everywhere central casting and then i got involved with pat moran casting she's giving me a lot of work i did homicide the movie homicide the series men don't accidentally twist the whole bit i've run through them all what about the movie homicide Okay, in the movie Homicide, I was supposed to have been an extra, and I was standing in this crowd scene, but the director, I think his name was Dave Mamet, came over to me. I was talking to another lady about the neighborhood because we used to play in that area when I was a kid, and I was talking about the lady who owned the candy store in our neighborhood. But when he saw me talking, he saw my hand gestures. And I was talking about the ladies and the little bad boys. And he came over to me and he said, what's your name? And I said, Sandra Waters. Oh, God, what did I do wrong? And he said, I want you to do something. I'm going to tell you what the situation is, and I want you to ab -lib. And I said, excuse me? He said, I want you to pretend that you're in that neighborhood where you were when this happened to you 20 years ago. So I just started babbling. And he said, it's exactly what I want. But I want you to do the next thing. And I said, oh my god, well, we black women have a tendency to, when we're talking. So do that again? You know, what are you, you know, OK? So he said, now what I want you to do, I want you to go to wardrobe. And I tried to pretend that I knew what he meant. So I just said, OK. They sent me to wardrobe and dressed me as this old lady. When we came back, he said, now tell me what you said. And when I told him what I said, they wrote it into the script. It's no kiddin'. I came from an extra to a principal in a matter of 10 minutes. So you got a speaking part. A speaking part in the homicide, the movie. That meant you got a credit at the end. Oh yes, I went to the movie just to see my name. I went to the premiere. I was treated like a queen. I think I did very well because I was very convincing. It's because I get nervous. I think I did very well. They did too because we didn't have to do it again. Like one take? One take. Now that's pretty good. One. One! And I've had seen things done where you had to do it four, I mean up to 10 times. Even the big stars do it more than once. One time. I'm sorry to do it more than once. And I was extremely pleased, and so were they. What's next for this Cinderella? Well, I did get two little walk -ons in Jodie Foster's Home for the Holidays. Oh, well. But what I'm doing now, I'm into full -figured modeling because I do some full -figured modeling around Baltimore and I've formed this group called Just Us Plus Models. So now I teach fuller women how to model, how to look like a model, how to act like a model. So that's going very well. My grandkids are just, they're wild people.
