Plus some news you haven't heard yet. This morning they're calling Maryland's reading plan the worst they've seen in any state. Well, just ahead, we'll tell you who and why. You wonder what I'm reading. We'll be doing a story about Japan and an angry pitcher, and I'm looking for a quote from American League umpire about quality Japanese baseball. Plus, there's always something going on. One point drivers going to be with us. People are talking live there, and the dog days of summer are upon us and everyone wants to keep mosquitoes away. There may be hope with the mosquito hawk. All right, now don't touch that tile or set out your bug zapper just yet. This is Eyewitness News this morning edition with Don Scott and Molly Bowers. Yeah. I've always wanted the bugs. Have you seen that? Have you seen that Miller Lite commercial? By the way, it's a nice, clear morning as seen from Sky. I live 1000ft up the channel. Up. Jimmy. It's okay. You can stand out there. Yeah. Jimmy is looking a little bit busy. As where you seen that Miller Lite at its. Yeah. I just waited on him in the restaurant and they said they were going to go out. They told me to come outside and watch the planes fly by. And then the plane went up and just went down behind the trees. Lisa says the two men that died in this plane crash aided the Kenmore restaurant right before taking off in their single engine plane. They even told her to come out of the restaurant ten minutes after they left and watch them fly by. They said, just go out and wave to me. I'll be out there so you can see my plane is proud of it. I had a picture of it in his wallet. But she was horrified when she saw her new friends that even invited her to come fly with them. Crashed to the ground. All you heard was a big explosion, and we come running out the front door and all you see is flames everywhere. And that's all. That's all you see is the flames. As you can see from this exclusive Sky chopper 13 video, there's nothing left of the cockpit. Two hours later and the plane was still smoldering. Sources tell us that the plane is an advanced trainer six, or more commonly referred to as a warbird, used during World War two as a training plane for pilots. Therein, I say they're real, real proud of everything they had their father, planes and all that, real anxious to get out there and get in and get up in the air again. A study several years ago found animal cruelty complaints in the city remained open for as long as three years. At that time, city council members recommended several improvements. Several animal advocate advocacy groups say the city still has not taken action on those recommendations. The city receives about 20 cruelty complaints a day. Rescue groups say they're feeding. They're fielding more of the complaints because of the city's lack of action. Maryland's blueprint for reading instruction is getting a big thumbs down from experts on reading research. They say the plan is so flawed it will do little to boost children's reading skills and will not effectively guide teachers, either. The author of the report on Reading calls the framework the most unproductive she's seen in any state. State Superintendent of Schools Doctor Nancy Grossman is calling for significant revisions in that plan. And take a look at this. A pitcher in Japan needs a lesson in good sportsmanship. After giving up three home runs in six innings, the pitcher for the Tokyo giants showed just how unhappy he was with the way things were going. He hauled off and threw a baseball. Vicki Mayberry reports from London and former bodyguard Trevor Reese Jones has quit his job with Mohammed Al Fayette. He's now working in a sports shop in a small town in northwestern England. In his first television interview, he's asked to be left alone. This is the first time I've spoken publicly since the accident happened at the end of August last year, and I would firstly like to extend my sympathy to the family and friends of those who were tragically killed in the accident. I have cooperated fully with a judge who was investigating the accident, and I've told them all I don't know up to this present time. I may wish to ask to see the judge again in the future, but I have no intention of doing this at the moment. I'd also like to add that I've got no intentions of speaking further on the subject publicly until after the court proceedings are finished, if at all. Speaking from his lawyer's office, he's weak from a cold, but is otherwise recovering well from his injuries. Bill Clinton joins us this morning from the white House with more. Good morning Bill. Good morning Jane. After a weekend with the rich and hip, it's more business as usual for the Clintons and for Mr. Clinton. Business as usual today means attacking the Republican Congress. Today. He'll go after them on cuts in summer jobs programs. However, this is also the week that Monica Lewinsky is expected to begin testifying before the grand jury. In the past few days, news organizations found previously unpublished pictures of the President and Lewinsky. This video, taken at a 1996 fundraising event, shows Lewinsky front and center, waiting to greet the president as he shakes hands with supporters. When Mr. Clinton sees Lewinsky, they embrace. Over the weekend, Lewinsky met with prosecutors in preparation for her grand jury appearance. FBI lab results are expected later in the week on the stained dress, which she turned over to prosecutors. Mr. Clinton supporters say that the issue of the dress is trivial, and that everybody should stop speculating and just wait for the results. Republicans, however, are saying that if the dress tests positive and if other things are true, the president may have a lot more to worry about than just simple perjury. This is a matter of sex between consenting adults, and the question of whether or not one or the other was truthful about it. That doesn't go to the question of his conduct in office. And in that sense, it's trivial. There's no excuse for lying. Especially for the president of the United States. And there's no, there's no question that perjury is a felony. And it's a it's an impeachable offense.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136451/file/253042#t=1237.15,1338.25"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136451/file/253042/transcript/71286/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Keep in mind, this is a lot more than just a missile launch case. There's whitewater, there's fog travelgate and a host of other matters that may involve very serious allegations here, all of which may make it very difficult for there to be business as usual here at the white House for the next two weeks until the president testifies. Jane Bill Plante of the white House, thank you. And this morning's medical report, if you're having trouble losing some weight, don't lose faith. We're going to try and provide some answers for every excuse in the book and our month long series, The Great American Weight Loss. Our doctor, Emeli Sandé, kicks things off this morning on a Monday I start my diet. Today's the day. Good morning. Welcome back Jane. While millions of us are overweight, there is no doubt about it. There are 97 million overweight adults in this country, and that's more than half the entire population. And just about everybody who has even just a few pounds to lose makes excuses for why they just can't do it. Excuses are one thing there's no shortage of. It's cheaper to go out and grab a hamburger, then just go to the store and grab all the stuff you need to make a salad. It's too easy just to grab the closest vending thing. Sometimes you take a go to the freezer where you keep your chocolate candy and you'll have a piece and say, I know I shouldn't, but I need it for energy or something sweet I want. Do any of those? Now, to help you identify your excuses, this morning's tip of the day is to write down the excuses you make today that prevent you from adopting a healthier lifestyle. Stay tuned all this month and we'll probably be dealing with some of your favorite excuses. So, Emily, in our month long series, are we going to be setting a certain weight loss goal? No, we're not going to be choosing a certain number. That's almost self-defeating. We're going to be talking about weight loss that last forever, not about weight loss that at the end of which 10 pounds I'm done. I can go back to my real life. This is about long term weight loss, lifestyle change, lifestyle changes. Okay. First arriving crews found smoke showing from the second floor of an apartment complex. There were also five victims who were entrapped by the smoke and were visible. Crews then utilized and deployed ground ladders and were able to rescue five victims. Investigators say a family in one apartment was using the stove when the fire started. As the flames spread, they fled to another apartment and screamed at the window for help. But the subjects were visible and they were obviously screaming, awaiting firefighters arrival. They may be small, but they've been known to ruin a party. One bite is all it takes. And sometimes just the sight of mosquitoes is enough to get some people scratching. But for others, like Doctor Robin Todd, mosquitoes are business. Welcome to Insect Control and Research in Catonsville, where we came to test the mosquito hawk guaranteed to repel these dive bombing bloodsuckers. These are Aedes aegypti, Dick. They're the sort of the white rats of the mosquito world. They're often called the yellow fever mosquito because they can transmit that disease. Do I have yellow fever? No they don't. No they're not. John Norman believes the storm drain problem affected more than his house. He believes that over the years it caused the street in front here to sink in. But there is one thing he's pretty happy about. He says back in March, the county finally came out, fix the storm drain and put in what's known as this headwall so that storm water flows through the pipe and not around it. What the county is doing, they're putting off inevitable repairs, and then any damages that are done to the properties are then pushed on to the land. There's been a shooting in a normally quiet part of Baltimore County. The Nightteam's Kai Jackson is there right now with the very latest crime. A shooting victim. Indeed. This happened just about 10:00 tonight here at Maria's Pizza and Subs. It's a carryout, and also has a lounge attached next to it. There's an interesting twist about the story. This is a business that was robbed just a few days ago. Is that right? Right. It was robbed on the 31st late in the evening with an armed robbery. Happened here also. Okay. Was anyone hurt in that incident? No, not in that incident. Not in this incident, as far as we know. Tell us what happened. You said it happened about 10:00 tonight. And apparently there were shots fired inside of this, building, but it wasn't by the suspects. Is that right? Right. Two subjects and entered the building. Attempted armed robbery, produced a gun, and they were met by the, people behind the counter producing their own guns and protection of the business. They fired shots, propelling the armed robbers back outside and ran off on foot into the area. Officers are checking the area. Canine, state police helicopters checking the area along with neighboring district from Parkville. Also checking. So far as negative results, do we know whether or not the would be robbers displayed weapons when they entered the pizza establishment? It's it's very sketchy right now, but we'll continue to check in the area until we're convinced that they're no longer around. Will there be any investigation of the fact that there was a shooting inside of a business, for instance? Were there any patrons inside when when the, shots were fired, there were some patrons in the lounge area, whether they were in the carryout area where the shooting occurred. I'm not sure. IBM says it's made a better, faster computer chip, and the change will affect just about everybody. Liz Gonzales explains. Faster computers and longer lasting batteries for many, electronic devices are just two of the applications that will be made possible by IBM's new microprocessor chips. The technology is called silicon on insulator or soy. It will be used to make a whole wide variety of different products, not just for the computer industry, but, much broader than that. IBM calls the soy chip a technological breakthrough. The process adds a special insulating layer between each transistor and the chip silicon base, reducing electrical interference. That means it can potentially boost the performance of computers by up to 35%, while using a third less power. Industry analysts have received the announcement enthusiastically. What we're going to expect out of this are, circuits that require less power, that can work faster, that are potentially more reliable. IBM says this technology will affect most electronic devices or home appliances in the future, allowing the industry to create smaller, more powerful, and less expensive electronic goods. Whether it's a computer or a cell phone or whatever that end device might be. This technology provides a tremendous potential to lower the cost, of the end product to the consumer. High volume production of the chip is planned for early 1999. We've had real nice conditions all the way through the weekend extending into Monday and, relatively low humidity, clear skies, beautiful blue conditions with the sky these last few days and we're ready to be outside right now. Whether it's out in the center of the country here, and you can see there's a whole lot of rain activity going on here. That's typical summertime thunderstorm development, but nothing really around our area. Things are moving so slowly in the atmosphere. There are no real strong winds aloft to push these storms along. So things are drifting very slowly. Our ridge of high pressure is gradually breaking down. Now these good weather patterns can't last forever, gradually breaking down. But tomorrow is going to be kind of a transition day, and we'll transition back to more normal conditions for us, that is to say, high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s rather than the low to mid 80s as we have seen, and probably will develop a little bit more in the way of humidity. Very hot conditions will persist in the south and also out to the western mountain states. Not so for us. We're looking for another day of highs at 86 degrees. That's where we were today.
