A small town in Scotland is in shock today. A gunman walked into an elementary school and Dunblane and opened fire on a kindergarten class. We now go live to Vicki Mabrey with this report from London. Vicki, what apparently began as a hostage situation has ended as the worst shooting incident by a lone gunman in British history. The gunfire, we're told, lasted only three minutes when it was over. 16 children and two adults were dead. One of those adults is believed to be the gunman himself. More than a dozen people were injured. For some frightened parents, it is the worst news they can ever hear that their child has been killed. Parents, relatives and concerned townspeople raced to Dunblane Primary School as soon as word of the shootings became known. Shortly after 930 this morning, 430 Eastern Time, a lone gunman burst into the school's gymnasium, reportedly brandishing several weapons and opened fire on the four, five and six year olds inside. After the massacre, the gunman apparently killed himself and then two gunshots. Please, please come. Everything and everything got thrown out, you know. And what were your friends doing and what what happened then? Well, everybody just got low. And you described as the kind of town all of us want to live in. Dunblane, 7000 residents are in shock. Everyone is just absolutely horrified because it's a kind of close knit community, Dunblane, and everybody knows everybody. So we will know somebody that's involved in this, unfortunately. The gunman's identity has not yet been released, although people in Dunblane are saying they believe that he was a local loner who was in his 40s.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136234/file/252782#t=120.04,251.35"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136234/file/252782/transcript/71040/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Certainly no one knows what drove him to massacre so many young children. I wouldn't be surprised if they hit 65 degrees. Well, check out the satellite view. Put this in a bigger context and what we owe all this very pleasant springtime weather, too, is that very cold air mass that came down out of Canada last weekend and brought us those subnormal temperatures. But once that air mass got over the eastern part of the country, it just stayed there. And now with the march sun becoming higher and higher in the sky, the sunshine moderated that air mass. And we've got what we see today. That ridge is still in place right here, its axis right along the East Coast. Little disturbance traveling across Canada is going to couple together with a disturbance out in the Rockies to form a frontal system. And there is some cooler air back up here in Canada. And that cooler air is not really frigid Arctic cold by any means, but that cooler air pushing down behind this front will bring us a threat of some showers Saturday night into Sunday. So that's looking pretty far down the road before we see any serious change occurring here. And when it does, it's only going to be change back to seasonable temperatures. Also, downtown thermometer, 64 degrees right on the edge of the Inner Harbor, though, right near the water, maybe a couple degrees cooler than that. Most of the 9000 town residents knew the gunman, but never imagined he could be capable of shooting their children at point blank range. Vicki Mabrey has the story. There was relief for the parents of some Dunblane primary school students. Their children were safe. Others received the worst news a parent can ever hear that their child had been killed. They won that conference out there. They beat UCLA. They beat Wake Forest. Maryland's a nine point favorite. How do you think they're going to do in that game? Well, I think Maryland do very well against them. I know their strength is their guards. Steve Nash is considered one of the best point guards in the nation. And what we'll do is handle some of Merlin's pressure. But when you go from him, it becomes just a regular team and he's going to have to do a awful lot. And I just think that the pressure that Maryland would put on them and throughout the game would wear him down. And I just think that they will prevail in that. Yeah, Maryland played well I think well, they won three out of four and 11 of their last 30 or so. And Keith Booth has been playing well lately. He's definitely been playing well. I've watched the play. I've been watching some of the games and he's stepped it up and and when he stepped it up, you could see Maryland was playing so much better than they were earlier in the year. Freshman Lauren Proffitt here. Well, what we're what Lauren has done is giving them the house as another outside shooter. And, you know, they needed a score and Merlin's a high scoring team. You want me down here? The southwest. I have Connecticut beating Cincinnati. I just love Connecticut. They're playing well there. Allen Nice, great team. Okay. And then out of the West, I have Arizona winning. But to be honest, Marlin and get to the final Four, I think that they'll beat Kansas. And and the situation here is they can beat Arizona at Arizona. See, that's where the key is. I think that would Merlin's pressure. I think that they have jock mind. But the fact is that they're playing so well their high scoring team. And I do think that Maryland can be Kansas. Kansas. Yes, I do. I really do. So Richard used to be the mascot at Maryland. This is the truth. He used to dress up in that turtle outfit. What's his name? Testutah. Yes, right. That's correct. Good studio. All right. You give Maryland a shot. Give us our last shot. I think. I think they will beat Kansas. Okay. And then the game against Arizona becomes the game becomes big four. Let's go east on east. I think that's a great game. I look at Georgetown winning the east. I think that they'll beat Massachusetts. They just have so much athletic ability and size.
