In sports, the Colts have done something they... were not able to do all last season. They won. That's right, the Colts pick up their first win last night in an exhibition pre -season game against the Houston Oilers, a score 15 to zero. The Colts, who ended last season with a record of zero, eight, and one, decked Euler quarterbacks eight times for 87 yards in losses. Go Colts. Eddie Murray. In tennis action last night at the Civic Center, Yannick Noah whipped Ivan Leno in an exhibition match, and later there were some local celebrities who took to the court, our own Richie Shear. Now, the annual spelling bee is an incentive to some, but whoever heard of a record being broken in mathematics or in reading comprehension? Dr. Verl McBride inspired speed reading competition among his students at Culver Stockton with spectacular results. And while academia's present focus is on incentive pay for better teachers, Dr. McBride urges incentive competition for American students. His students are routinely taught to read from two or more books, two or more pages simultaneously. And he says his system can be applied as well to the study of mathematics. When there are new and easier ways of doing math, it becomes fun. Competition, Dr. McBride says, is a way to make the learning process fun. and that commands attention to his next recommendation, that we should glamorize our academic heroes, organize minor and major leagues in the basics, hold state, regional, and national finals, publicize scores with all of the flamboyance which we reserve for athletic accomplishment. A new Brooke Shields poster will be available soon, but the young actress and model is not likely to be pleased. The poster will show Brooke at the age of 11, nude and standing in a bathtub. Gary Gross, the photographer who took those shots, won a long court battle with Brooke and her mom for the right to publish it. The posters will retail at $40. Prince Andrew wasn't exactly a picture perfect as he toured Canada's Northwest Territories. Andy's outfit featured dirty sneakers plus a few days growth. Well, the prince was on a three week canoe trip with former classmates from a school in Ontario. And finally, Robin Gibb, one third of the Bee Gees, just plucked down nearly one million dollars for a mansion in Miami Beach. The place reportedly has 10 bedrooms, seven bathrooms, marble floors, and of course a music room. It's just two doors away from the even bigger place where Robyn's brother Barry. already lives. And surely, that's bad news for the grower, but great news for you folks, because you can now go to market and buy good quality fresh limes at a very, very low price. Now, for you folks that have never used fresh limes, you want to do yourself a favor and take advantage of these fresh limes and use them in the same way that you use fresh lemons. And there's no question about the fact, I'm sure at least, that you're going to enjoy them. When you go to market, you want to select fresh limes. Very, very carefully, as a matter of fact, every once in a while, you'll have fresh limes. You'll have this little browning around the stem end. You don't want those. You want to select limes that have a smooth skin and that have a light yellowish green color. And you want to select them when they have a little bit of give. Now, when they have that little bit of give, that tells you that they're loaded with juice. And that's exactly what you want. Just take a look at this, folks. This is a beautiful lime. that's got was a little bit givy, and look at that. Just absolutely loaded with juice. Incidentally, folks, why don't you buy yourself more than you need. This was one of those life -giving rains at the stadium. Yes, it rained at the stadium and they played on, probably singing in the rain or something like that. I don't think anybody really minded the rain tonight. I was then at the Harbor Lights Festival tonight, and people didn't seem to mind the rain a bit, just took it in stride. We needed it. We really do need it. Let's take a look at radar. This is live radar, and there ain't much left in the way of rain right now. This is mostly. a ground clutter pattern of low -level moisture. We have a few light little showers here in the Baltimore region. Some thunderstorms still west of Norfolk, Virginia on the North Carolina border and some big ones down in North Carolina. West of Richmond, Charlottesville area, still some thunderstorms, but they're rapidly dying out as temperatures cool down. Of course, your thunderstorm formation rapidly ceases. These are the typical air mass thunderstorms. They really grew up west of Baltimore and they moved generally toward Baltimore and then kind of spread down to Washington, D .C. area. around the state. Now, temperatures... have cooled down generally into the 70s, low to mid 70s, and fog is forming over many sections of the state at this time. Winds tomorrow out of the south, seven to 18 miles an hour. It's gonna be a repeat tomorrow, except a lesser chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. Our satellite picture tonight shows us still a lot of cloudiness and some low lying clouds and fog over West Virginia, Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania, some thunderstorms in the Carolinas, some big ones in Florida, in Alabama also. Further west. Partly cloudy to clear skies over the Great Lakes. This will move in the region tomorrow. Tomorrow's map shows us a weak frontal system up to our northwest. Here it is. This is not gonna do too much to us tomorrow, but later in the weekend and by Monday, it should clear the region, giving us a little bit drier air early next week. Five day forecast looks like this. Hot tomorrow, 90 to 93, a slim chance of a thunderstorm. 95 on Sunday, a slightly better chance. And then cooler and drier Monday and Tuesday. Again, humid, maybe a thunderstorm late on Wednesday. Tomorrow morning, some low clouds, some fog, 72 degrees. Have a nice weekend and have a safe one. Thank goodness for the rain. And despite the steady downpour throughout most of this evening, nothing could or would deter the show of affection tonight at the stadium for Brooks Robinson. Thousands braved the dampness and showed up with their trusty umbrellas in tow, waiting for the newest member of the Hall of Fame to appear in the stadium they watched him perform in for the better part of 23 years. Brooks took a well -deserved Hall of Fame motorized victory lap to a tremendous ovation. Orioles, past and present, were on hand to relate some of their sentiment. Names like Paul Richards and Mark Belanger, Dave McNally, the fans roared. It reached a fever pitch when Brooks spoke to the crowd.
