Tornado terror twisters ripped through Oklahoma and Kansas, leaving a path of destruction behind. At this hour, the search continues for survivors. We have the team coverage of these devastating storms. And some of you thought it might happen and it has. A member of the Cuban team has defected right here in Baltimore. Eyewitness News at five next. Live from WJC 13. You've got Baltimore as leader of news team now. I witnessed. Hello, everybody. I'm Sally Thornton. And I'm Guy Jackson. Here's what people are talking about tonight. Two tornadoes directly next to each other. Unbelievable. In just a matter of hours, two entire towns in Oklahoma and Kansas are gone, completely erased from the map. Unless you've lived through the devastation of a powerful tornado, that kind of terror is hard to imagine. Do these coaches live? To begin our team coverage with unforgettable Survivor stories, Denise? Well, Sally, there are survivors out to those killer twisters, but there are also at least 45 people who died and hundreds more who are hurt. The death toll can only rise as workers begin the grim task of searching for more victims in the rubble left by Monday's killer tornadoes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078#t=3.26,112.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078/transcript/71200/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"As many as four dozen twisters snake across Oklahoma and Kansas, some reportedly one mile wide and ten miles high. Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas, were the hardest hit. It's one of those things you don't believe until you see it. You know, kind of like a picture of bomb on that. I didn't expect it to be in my neighborhood. So let me get whatever we can. Is that your girl? That's my girl. Most residents of what's known as Tornado Alley are familiar with nature's fury. But the scenes of destruction in the wake of the tornadoes can only be described as surreal. Oklahoma's governor described the damage as reminiscent of the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, which happened almost four years ago. And the Red Cross has set up an emergency number for those looking for relatives or who can provide information to the police. That number is 405. You see it on your screen. 7937774. Sally. Thanks, Denise. We'll see you soon. President Clinton has declared 11 Oklahoma counties and one in Kansas federal disaster areas. Those tornadoes did not move quickly. In fact, one monstrous twister spent four hours chilling across miles of tornado alley. For the latest on the path of the tornadoes and the incredible strength of these twisters, we go now to Bob Turk, who continues our team coverage live in the first morning weather center Bob. All right. These are pretty typical of spring when we go through the change of seasons from winter towards summer when there's two air masses get together. This is what happens. Thunderstorms and tornadoes, 261 to over 380 mile an hour winds. That's what they experience in these particular tornadoes in Oklahoma last night. And tonight, there are tornado watches out and some warnings out for portion of Kansas. Also eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas as well. We'll show you some of that later on, perhaps in our national radar if you have not a region tonight. No problems weatherwise around here. We do have a few clouds which might produce a sprinkle or maybe a shower in the next two hours. Otherwise, partly cloudy, 72 down to 62 later on. Let's come back and take a look at the entire nation for you in about 12 minutes. Okay? All right, Bob, thanks a lot. Hard to imagine the force of the winds which swept the plains last night. Team coverage of Porter Stan Saunders is live with more on how much the human body can stand in those conditions. Dan? Hey, so right now, the winds are pretty calm outside today. You know, in Maryland, big winds aren't usually a big problem. But I did visit one place today, the aerodynamic wind tunnel at the University of Maryland College Park. You would certainly be blown around like a leaf in the wind here. If it had picked you up, throw you against trees, walls, you would become part of the flying debris. At this point, you could feel a lot of air going up your nostrils. And you want to make sure you took your hand out of. You know, I point out the things moving around would have become dangerous. It's a very. You're here. We've get something the size of a marble game. Whistling down. It would be something approaching, like a bullet hitting you. Is it just over 100mph? Enough is enough, not only for me, but for anybody who will hopefully never have to endure deadly winds like thousands did in two states last night. Well, I can tell you what I took it up to about, 105mph. And then I said, hey, that's it. Because then I started having problems breathing. Like I said, if it gets up your nose, I really believe you can easily be suffocated, not just taken up and blown away with the wind cloth or Sally in this case, that's okay. So the folks in Oklahoma and Kansas experienced more than double what you experience for just a few seconds today. So keep it right here for the very latest. Well, a whirlwind of a controversy tonight as Eyewitness News learns that at least one Cuban who traveled with the delegation to Camden Yards has defected. The story is changing by the minute. Eyewitness News is live with Chris Del Campo at police headquarters with late breaking developments Christine. Well, Kyra, Baltimore police are confirming one defection tonight, but the Associated Press is quoting Georgia's New Jersey congressman, Bob Menendez, as saying that two others may have asked for asylum. It was 10:00 this morning. The Baltimore police say Rigoberto Herrera walked into the Central district and asked for asylum through an interpreter. That individual apparently requested asylum through an interpreter. Upon hearing that, that's when the shift lieutenant then immediately notified immigration representatives who came approximately an hour to an hour and a half later until custody of that individual. And they are now handling that inquiry. Now, the ball player, but part of the Cuban delegation, police say, and a man they say approximately in his 50s wire reports, quote, a New Jersey congressman is saying the defector is a coach who accompany the all star team here. The beautiful thing about this country that we can do this. Protesters made the political divisions between the two nations clear last night. Divisions that some say may have led to today's defection. I know if they did it, it's because mainly because of their in economic situation, like in their country where we all come from the other side.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078#t=426.16,529.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078/transcript/71200/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So one more. 2 or 3 more. Back to you, Chris. Thank you very much. Costa del Kent reporting live from downtown. We'll get the latest from you tonight at 6:00. Meanwhile, word out of Baltimore Mayor Curt smokes office after hearing about the defection. He says tonight, quote, I said from the outset that we would respect individual's rights under international law. Should someone choose to remain in this country. And that remains our position. If the Cuban defection doesn't get you talking, what happened on the field during last night's game certainly will. Several protesters from Miami ran onto the field in the middle of the game. One of them holding a sign that said Freedom strike out against Castro. It was grabbed by the Cuban umpire. Umpire Cesar Valdez took matters into his own hands, picking at the protester and slamming him to the ground. B.J. If you're a doctor thinks you might have breast cancer, he or she usually arranges for you to undergo a breast biopsy. Sally And tonight's Eyewitness News Health Watch, a just released study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds a large core needle breast biopsy is just as accurate as surgical biopsy. When Terry Allen's doctor told her she needed a breast biopsy, thoughts of surgery raced through her mind. The first thought was general anesthesia, which I'd never had. It will be the less invasive way. That less invasive way is the large core needle biopsy that uses just that, a large needle to remove tissue from the breast. On average, the traditional surgical biopsy removes about a golf ball sized amount of tissue. But as you can see with this system, far less tissue is removed. And removing less tissue isn't the only advantage. Unlike surgery, large core needle biopsy leaves minimal scarring and the results come quickly. So there isn't this prolonged waiting and wondering and worrying. And we get the answer back the next day. And again, with surgical biopsies, it often takes 4 to 5 days to get the results. Quick results, a quick procedure and a quick recovery. When I left the room, I had a Band-Aid over the incision and an ice bag in my bra to try to minimize swelling. And I went back to my desk and work the rest of the day. And the large core needle biopsy is only getting better. The University of Maryland Medical Center has a more advanced version called the Mama Tell. The Mama Tome is an improvement on traditional corneal biopsy because it takes that much more tissue. It takes actually five times as much tissue in each little sample. And even though the newer version gets more tissue, women are still left with minimal scarring. And I imagine that this is less costly than surgery. Yes, surgical biopsy. Dr. Burke says it is. She says that it saves between 600 and $800 per patient. So it's very significant. Both suspects were also said to be obsessed with violent video games. Eyewitness News investigates. As Mike Shue asks the question Are lifelike games training some troubled teens to kill? The more you kill, the longer the game blood body parts endure. Just another afternoon at the video arcade. At Sheppard Pratt. Dr. Jim McGee says all 15 teens in recent school shootings played games like these. His colleague, Dr. Michael Belgrave, says a troubled teen would be desensitized to violence by these games. I think it's pretty self evident that the more you get involved with something like that, particularly for someone who's susceptible, it's going to have them feel that it's okay to do. In fact, the psychology professor who wrote a book for the military on how people learn to kill says that watching brutal killings over and over and over again tends to numb the players to violence.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078#t=1263.43,1376.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078/transcript/71200/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But game players like Geoff Tomlinson disagree. Tornadic activity definitely a probability here, especially right now from Arkansas into east Texas and portions of eastern Oklahoma and also central Kansas up to central Nebraska. They have tornado watches out right now for the next few hours because of low pressure sitting out here behind this cooler and drier air coming in from the north and northwest. Warm, humid air coming in from the south. When these two forces get together, the cooler air undercuts that warm air forces it aloft. And because of that, you could get some violent thunderstorms forming and just in some cases, you'll get tornadic activity to occur here. We've got a low pressure off the coast that's been pumping in the clouds last couple of days until today when the winds shift a little more to the north and brought in the drier air and that warm air just west of the clouds. Tornado terror strikes the nation's heartland, erasing whole towns and neighborhoods off the map and leaving dozens of people dead. The twisters hit early last night and the terror continued for hours. Denise Koch is live in the Eyewitness News room with the latest on this tragic situation Denise. Well, Sally, it's hard to imagine the power of the twisters, but many people are comparing them to the devastation of war. One of the tornadoes could be classified as an EF four. The second strongest kind of tornado, much more powerful than a hurricane. Look at this twister. It is the one that pummeled the town of Newcastle and then headed north to Oklahoma City with churning winds up to 260 miles an hour. At one point, the twister was a whole mile wide. Instead of just evaporating, as twisters usually do. This one continued to churn for an agonizing four hours. I wouldn't. As soon as Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lynn says Oxygen is one of the most vital elements that keeps you alive, so you need plenty of it. We do need plenty of it. And people who have neurological problems may need high doses of oxygen to help them. In tonight's How to Stop Watch, we actually found a group of people who believe that saturating your body with oxygen can help cure disease. Our own Katie Lyon went inside a hyperbaric chamber to learn more about oxygen therapy. It's an iron chamber about the size of a minivan, but it may hold the secret to helping cure neurological disorders like cerebral palsy, nerve pain and the effects of stroke. Hyperbaric chamber like this one has long been used to treat the effects of things like the bends, slow healing wounds or smoke inhalation. But it's just been recently that they're being used to treat other diseases, and sometimes there are amazing results. Hyperbaric makes available free molecular options for the human body to use without expending its own energy. So in other words, it can bypass a lot of the vasculature in the brain and get oxygen to exactly where we need to deliver it in patients who have neurologic disorders. My son has third stage lung disease, and he has tremors in his right hand and he can't write any more. So Lonnie's doctor in New Jersey told Sharon to bring him to Baltimore and Lifeforce for two weeks of treatments in the hyperbaric chamber. Patients call it diving because the chamber is actually pressurized below sea level and then patients receive pure oxygen. Already, Sharon says she sees a difference in her son. First, they get sick off before they get better. As the bacteria is killed off, the poisons are released and he's starting to get back symptoms that had gone away.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078#t=2034.96,2137.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078/transcript/71200/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So that's a good sign. And any word on the place where I have any problem in my leg? Jennifer Bailey has chronic regional pain syndrome, a disorder that causes excruciating pain in her left arm. But I've seen more blood flow to my arm. You know, it's not as discolored and it's warmer and just the pain has decreased. I went along on a dive with Lonnie, Richard and Jennifer. I'm inside of the 160 point. Being inside the chamber feels like flying in an airplane. I have to clear my ears as the pressure increases. It's a trip this Cape Cod mom is hoping to make soon. Her eight month old son has cerebral palsy, just like many across the country. She's trying to raise money to pay for her son's treatment in the chamber, which is not covered by insurance. I'll take anything, really. If he can learn to just use his hands a little bit. It makes me happy, you know, just something to help him come along. But some doctors are skeptical. The bottom line is that this form of therapy needs a lot more study before people start charging money for it. Hyperbaric by itself is not curative for inner logic disorders, but it enhances people's ability to regain their rehabilitative skills. My experience in the chamber means nothing. So let's take a look at some of the issues that they're considering, those hearings. The first thing they consider is persecution. You know, has this person been the subject of family, been the subject of persecution in their own country? Second is there has there been an actual threat to that person's life or liberty? Or is there a credible fear of some kind of danger, you know, a threat to life or safety? Are they a member of any targeted group? Have they been outspoken in the past? Important stuff. Let me give you an example. You might have somebody, for example, who was a newspaper publisher in another country or a reporter in another country who did editorials. They've been outspoken. These are the kinds of things that Immigration and Naturalization will consider to say, is this the kind of case where we want to grant this very special privilege to someone who is not a citizen here that wants to come here and stay here? Okay. So what if this Herrera or anybody else, for that matter, is not granted asylum? Once they've gone and done this, they've got rights of appeal. It doesn't really go into federal court going in the federal courts. A little tough on these case. What happens is there are immigration judges that are part of the immigration and naturalization, part of the government. And then there are appeal areas. Ahead, we move now to the top of the third inning. Luis Laska, take one in the right field, slashing an RBI single out that direction. Now it's 5 to 3 as Cuba increases their advantage. And then in the top of the ninth, the Cubans put them away. Two men on. Andy Morales stands in. Look at it. Gabe Molina. He launches one straight away, centerfield, three run home, run 12 to 3. Cuba. I'm Jack Carter. And I'm Denise Coke. Here's what people are talking about tonight. Cuban defectors, Eyewitness News has learned that at least one of the Cubans in the delegation to Camden Yards has asked for asylum. The defectors reportedly a 54 year old coach who came to Baltimore with the Cuban All-Stars. But as News first learned of the defection through a tip. Eyewitness News is live now at police headquarters where Christie Dale Camp has been tracking down the story all day Krista. All right, Nick, as you just mentioned, the man that police Baltimore police say defected is Rigoberto Herrera. He is not on the Cuban team roster. He is not on the Cuban team, according to police, but rather a man who came with the Cuban delegation and came to their central district office this morning asking for asylum. Baynes drank while the two sides came together in the spirit of sportsmanship. The differences between nations were clearer. Beautiful thing about this country that we can do this difference is that Eyewitness News observed firsthand during the Orioles recent trip to Cuba. I see. It's sad. It's disappointing is that I wish I didn't have to do it that way. Police say Rigoberto Herrera wasn't a ball player but a member of the Cuban delegation approximately in his 50s. Through the interpreter, it's our understanding he specifically requested asylum. Based on that information. The shift lieutenant then immediately notified immigration representatives who responded and took custody of the individual. Now, the Associated Press is reporting tonight that New Jersey Congressman Bob Menendez is saying that there may be two others who asked for asylum as well, and that this man is a coach who accompanied the all star team here, Victor. Chris Christie and I were dealing last night and we know that the IRS was prepared for this type of thing. What are they saying tonight about this defection? Absolutely nothing, because I tried speaking with them today and they say that it is their policy to keep tight lipped about this type of situation when people are seeking asylum. Okay, Christie, don't care. Live from Baltimore City police headquarters. Late this afternoon, Mayor Schmoke commented on the defection. His response was, quote, I said from the outset that we will respect individual rights under international law should someone choose to remain in this country. And that remains our position. The city council gave the go ahead to a project that has generated its own protest right down to signs pleading for help. This is not about what's best for Baltimore or what makes sense. This is about money, power and greed. When you see it through those eyes, then it all makes perfect sense. Perfect sense for the city looking to use a renovation of the old Hippodrome Theater as the centerpiece of an 18 block $350 million overhaul of the city's West side. Sound good? Well, not if you're one of the dozens of small businesses that will have to move out to make room. People like Joey Petoskey and his family have been on Utah Street for 25 years. The West Side renovation of downtown will be the biggest city undertaking in 20 years since the building of Harbor Place. In its commentary tonight, Michael Oscar says Harbor Place had its detractors as well. Yeah, and certainly this one does, too. There are two camps arguing against the development of the west side of downtown. Those merchants who will lose their stores and have to relocate. And those people who think this 18 block area with the Hippodrome Theater at its heart is simply too far gone psychologically for redemption. The city does have to take care of those merchants. They can't just kiss off all the years those people hung in there when so many other merchants were bailing out. As for those who say the West Side renovation is too late. As you get the dry air undercuts the warm, humid air forces that clouds moisture aloft. And you got a lot of turbulence in those storms and some in some locations, you'll get tornadoes forming. Big lines of storms right now from east Texas into Arkansas and Missouri. All this activity moving to the east northeast toward Illinois probably later tonight and during the day tomorrow. Illinois, Kentucky, western Tennessee will probably see tornado watches out as well. So all the activity tonight out in the Midwest portion of the country here in the east, that low continues to spin rain, cool temperatures and climatic conditions to our north. And we're going to see some of those clouds in the next two hours. As you can see, this thing rotating around. Well, how do you know it's time for your test? And what if you don't get your notice? When one woman thought she was paying for someone else's mistake, she decided to get help for this woman. She really wasn't trying to avoid paying out there. She knew she owed some money for the test. It just was a question of this was a piece of the money she didn't think she had to pay. You know, there was no doubt here that this car was due for its biannual emissions test. It's just that the owner didn't know about it. And that ended up costing her money that she didn't think she owed. Although Donna Catterton didn't realize it at the time, she came very close to driving with a suspended registration. It's because she failed to get her emissions test, but she said she had no idea it was due until she got this notice of suspension. But there was a $10 late charge. I figured they would just say, you know, don't worry about it. We're not going to charge you for it, you know, because it wasn't my error, you know, to begin with. But that didn't happen. The extra $10 was tacked on to the regular emissions test charge. Just the point of it. You know, I shouldn't have had to have paid it and the technician shouldn't have charged me for it. In fact, we learned that if you really don't receive the proper notice, the agents at the test sites do have the authority to waive the late fee. Things really do sometimes get lost in the mail. So you may be able to get a waiver of that penalty if you ask, but you won't get any waivers when it comes to either your driver's license or your car's registration. You see your driver's license is set to expire on your birthday, a day most of us should know. And your car's registration expires on the date right on your license plate right there that you will see every day when you go to the car. So there won't be any excuses when that date comes due. But your emissions reinspection date is a different story because there's not really an easy way to remember it. Not to me, because I wouldn't. I would not I would never remember that that was the date that it was still. Because I think you have to have done, what, a couple of years now? I don't think it's a yearly thing or anything. The so-called PC dads have some simple tips for us in shaping tomorrow. Got it. Down in the middle. If you want to keep up with your children, you need to learn it. I know that they have classes at the library that you can go and actually I really need to take one myself. Carol Miller is a parent volunteer at Kearny Elementary School in Baltimore County, so she knows better than most of us that computers are as easy as ABC, at least for first graders. Well, you shall be quite a dime today when you use anything else to make $0.10. The children know more about the Internet than the parents. So the parents need to take lessons from their children or to go to the library and get a book. So explain what you can do or what you shouldn't do on the Internet. And you need to tell them to be patient with us and gently tell them to talk slowly and explain things so nice and easy because parents can learn.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078#t=6445.0,6534.01"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136493/file/253078/transcript/71200/annotation/62","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It just takes us a little bit longer. If you're unable to afford a PC to the home, look around your own community. Check with your public schools, check with your local community colleges or high schools, and certainly your local public libraries to see if they have computer labs and find out if you can come in and at what hours to get on the computer and learn about how to run it and also learn about the Internet. So when should we be doing this? Well, I started my daughter when she was about three. A lot of people think, my gosh, but I'll start my kid up. By the time they're two years old, they're going to be living on the streets, homeless, like no, no, no.
