Eyewitness News is next. Good evening, everyone. I'm Debbie Wright. Frank Luber is on vacation. Tonight, the picket lines are up and the telephone lines are being manned by 675 ,000 fewer people nationwide. Those communication workers of America walked off of their jobs at midnight last night, unable to reach a contract negotiation with AT &T. Here in Baltimore, the lines formed early this morning. They carried signs and braved 90 -degree temperatures. These Communications Workers of America members began their first nationwide strike against AT &T in over 10 years by picketing both downtown offices of C &P Telephone Company. Union officials say over 90 % of the 1 ,100 Baltimore area C &P employees are taking this job action. Those numbers were not reflected by the initial size of the picket line. Many of the picketers that you see here really didn't think that the contract dispute would come down to this. they were hoping that the company would come up with an acceptable offer at the last minute. I thought they would at least give into something that we need. Operations clerk Karen Quinn echoes those feelings. She came to C and P telephone company four years ago because the benefits are good. Ironically, it is the benefits package that is at the heart of this contract dispute. The company wants workers to pick up part of the cost of their benefits package. Nothing to cheer about tonight for Oreo's cheerleader, Wild Bill Hagee. Hagee was arrested with three friends at a Baltimore County restaurant when an undercover detective found them preparing to smoke what was believed to be marijuana. It happened in a van on the Ocean Pride parking lot. All were released pending analysis of the substance. Three young boys have been charged with trying to rape a four -year -old Southwest Baltimore girl. Two ten -year -old boys and an eight -year -old boy allegedly grabbed the girl from her backyard and took her to one of their homes. There, police say, the boys sexually assaulted her until a neighbor heard her screaming and found the boys with the girl. Police say the girl's mother and babysitter did not hear the screams because they are both deaf. No charges will be placed against the man who kept two cougars in his Pimlico area home. One of the cougars died in his basement. The other was put to sleep yesterday when police were notified by concerned neighbors. The 100 pound cougar was put to sleep because it was feared that it might have had rabies. Three men were arrested in Baltimore County at dawn this morning when police say they caught them firing a BB gun at cars. More than 100 cars were damaged by the pellets before the arrests were made, however. The vandalism took place in Parkville, Towson, and Rosedale. The two 18 -year -olds are being held on $50 ,000 bond while the 17 -year -old was released to his parents' custody. A Republic Airlines jet made an emergency landing in Las Vegas, Nevada earlier tonight. No one was injured. The DC -9 was circling the airport and dumping fuel as a precautionary measure after it ran into trouble. 130 passengers were on the plane, all a little scared, but none injured. The problem apparently began at takeoff when the landing gear malfunctioned. Baltimore's newest form of transportation, the subway system, is making merchants smile tonight. The Downtown Merchants Association says it can finally see the light at the end of the subway tunnel, a light leading to an estimated 25 ,000 riders daily to the downtown businesses. The system is slated to open November 21st. Meanwhile, officials at the National Aquarium in Baltimore are also all smiles tonight. Not only are they looking forward to tomorrow's second anniversary of the opening of the but they're celebrating some pretty impressive figures as well. The aquarium drew more than 1 .3 million visitors in the past year, with an operating surplus of at least one million dollars. And to celebrate its good fortune, all visitors will be charged only one dollar for admission. Of course, Eyewitness News will have the full details of tomorrow's aquarium birthday on Eyewitness News at six o 'clock. It was the second bombing in two days in Syrian -controlled Lebanese territory. A similar explosion in Tripoli last Friday killed 20 people. Now we're going to be talking about cool weather and saying, gee, I wish we had those warm days of August back again. Anyway, it was humid. And I can promise you one thing, we are definitely going to have a break in the humidity. Yay! Sometime in the middle part of the week. Let's look at the current statistics. On Television Hill, 80 degrees, 76 humidity, southerly winds at 6 and the barometer is steady. Here come the tides. Low at 120 and a high at 718 in the morning. sunrise at six thirteen and our sunset at eight eleven another nice night to get out of the house and take a walk maybe down at the inner harbor along there in front of the world trade center got up to ninety three degrees today to no one's surprise it was even warmer down here at the inner harbor they got up to about ninety six in the center of the city uh... seventy one overnight last night not really comfortable sleeping and that's going to be about the same scenario tonight we take a look at sky high right now the radar it looks like a lot of Let's have a look. And we can see. Wow, when's it coming in to cool us off? But this has nothing to do with precipitation. It's our usual summertime inversion that the radar is picking up. Just non -precipitation echoes. The only real rain is down over in this area around Roanoke and south to the Piedmont. They are getting some small cells that popped up. There was some rain, some very brief showers reported today up near the Pennsylvania line. They came and went just like this, and most of us, most of you folks up in that area didn't see anything. in that regard. Mostly you saw hazy sunshine. We're going to see the same tomorrow. Here are the way the state temperatures look as of the moment. You see for the most part things are in their 70s after hitting highs today near 90 degrees. Winds from the southwest at 8 to 15. They'll be the same on the bay tomorrow and the waves one foot or less. Out toward the ocean 75 Salisbury and the same in Ocean City. Another good beach day today. The water temperature in the low 70s. Well, here's the satellite view, and you see, there isn't really anything happening on sky track for us. Very, very clear. There are some showers, if you look down in here, around in Florida, very typical for this time of the year. Air mass showers popping up every so often. They are having showers actually all the way back into California, but they're not a concentrated mass of showers. We mentioned last night at the jet stream, which usually carries weather patterns down across the country. isn't doing that we're not getting anything across the nation as a consequence things are just kind of limping along through the united states the jet stream is ripping across canada instead and tomorrow here's the way our map will look for mackie weather with a frontal system slowly approaching us and thunderstorms setting along ahead of it we should get probably a thunderstorm by about rush hour tomorrow afternoon and probably into tomorrow evening as a frontal system begins to move in and a high pressure system begins to sink in on us. we could see by tuesday night a very comfortable evening for sleeping and then by wednesday and thursday very pleasant clear days and less humidity sounds okay to me five -day forecast from mackinweather here it comes tomorrow then sunshine haze ninety five degrees same on tuesday thundershawr by late in the day and maybe hanging around tuesday wednesday thursday friday beautiful days but humidity will start building again by next weekend okay eight o 'clock tomorrow morning hazy sunshine at a temperature of Have a lovely week.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144428/file/266930#t=1000.14,1218.66
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144428/file/266930/transcript/77107/annotation/34
Speaker 1: Okay, thank you, Rob. You know, Debbie, every time I think about the Orioles, I think about myself being here. They've lost two games in a row. Well, bad habits are meant to be broken, and the O's losing streak is now two in a row. They lose to the Chicago White Sox four to three today. That's one habit the Orioles would like to get rid of. It was not a pleasant return for Mike Flanagan, who was tagged for the first loss he's had this season. The White Sox got the Flanagan early in the first inning. Tom Pachorek reached second on a double to left field. Then came the Lumberjack, Greg Luzinski, a two run shot to right field, number 23, the White Sox on top by the score of two to nothing. Now, despite the loss, the Bird fans had something to talk about. It was a sensational catch by Al Bumrey off this Todd Cruz, excuse me, Julio Cruz shot. Then in the other inning, here he is. Mr. Paciorek once again goes straight up the middle, brings in two runs, and the White Sox on top by the score of four to nothing. Dan Ford scored the Orioles' first run in the sixth inning with his sack fly deep to center field. It goes all the way, but not good enough to get out of the ballpark. The Orioles on top four to one or behind four to one. Joe Nolan comes in for the score. The O's try a comeback in the ninth inning Cal Ripken reaches on this hit to right field and it brings in Kenny Singleton and you can hear them in section 34 Ken Ken put it in the bullpen and he does he makes it 4 -3 but right field to Hurl Baines from the Eastern Shore he looks as though he had the ball but gets hit he's okay Kenny comes in and that's his 12th home run of the year but John Loewenstein puts the lights out in the party when he grounds the third base that's the final game Four to three, Chicago wins. Well, some real good news considering the Baltimore Orioles. Some good news for Jim Palmer, considering perhaps his comeback and the return of what he's gonna do. The Orioles have been working out with Palmer and Palmer has been working out to help strengthen his shoulder, which placed him on the disabled list some time ago. Thanks for watching! But Palmer was throwing the ball again in his Class A farm team. The Hagerstown Suns, the three -time Cy Young Award winner, made his first appearance in the minors in 15 years, pitching five innings. For a win, 8 -6 over the Durham Bulldogs, striking out five, walking two, Palmer allows seven hits, two runs during this time in the game. Jem is looking forward to returning to the team only, perhaps, at 100 percent. This afternoon, the New York Mets and the Chicago White Sox got added 2 to 4 to 1, excuse me. Hubie Brooks double into right center field, got the run across 2 to 1. Then Mel Hall ties the game up with this home run for the Cubs. It's all tied up at 2 -2. Then came the Mets once again. Bob Baylor puts the icing on the cake with this hit to right as Brian Giles scores 4 -3 for the Mets. Now it looks as though we're going to take a look at the scores around the American and National League. For the American League, well the Orioles lose their game by the score of 4 -3 to Chicago. Detroit lost, moving Detroit within one game of the Orioles, they beat the New York Yankees by the score of 8 -5. It was Milwaukee over Toronto 6 -9, Kansas City behind Gaylord Perry 7 innings, 2 hits, and Dan Quisenberry picked up his 28th save, they beat Boston by the score of 1 -0. It was Oakland over Minnesota by the score of 6 -0, California and Seattle, they haven't button on the way. There was a double -hitter in Texas, that's right. It was Texas winning the first game 7 -3, losing the second game by the score of 7 -3. A 4 -3 first game, 7 -3 second game. That's how it really went. Montreal in the National League against Pittsburgh. Tim Reigns' grand slam allowed Montreal for a six to nothing victory. It was New York beating Chicago. Atlanta, well they had a tough time against Los Angeles, but they finally pulled it out five to two. Philadelphia beat St. Louis five to two. Cincinnati beat San Diego five to three. And Houston beat San Francisco two to one. Hal Sutton blew a six -stroke lead in the final round and still managed to hold on to a score of one stroke over the Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus in the 65th PGA Championship. Sutton closed out the tournament at the Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles with four routine par to deny Jack Nicklaus' 20th victory and a major event. Sutton's closing round was an even par of 71, which gave him a 10 -under, 274, won him $100 ,000. They say what Don King wants, Don King gets. When former WBC featherweight champion Bobby Chacon was stripped of his title by the WBC, they made room for a Don King promoted fighter. In steps the macho man, Hector Macho Camacho. Today, Camacho in the leopard skin trunks. TKO former featherweight champion, Rafael Bazooka -Lamone in the fifth round to win the vacant WBC featherweight championship. He looks good. Now look at Lamone rolling all over the floor. Camacho was all over top of him. The referee finally had to stop, step right into the ring to help Camacho. That's right from beating up when this guy, Lamone was trying to find a seat, a better seat to look at the fight from. I guess he was trying to find one. Camacho. The young man from Spanish Harlem can beat the best of them, the referee stops in and stops the fight. There was another fight and this one, two very talented middleweights. One is by the name of John Collins in the black trunks. He's taken on Mr. Whetson and guess what happens to Mr. Whetson? He gets knocked down. And some final notes in sports, former Washington Redskins, all the famer and also all -pro. Lamar, excuse me, let's get that right. Lamar Parish was released. from jail today after posting a $500 ,000 bond on drug charges.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144428/file/266930#t=1362.94,1683.99
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144428/file/266930/transcript/77107/annotation/42
Speaker 1: Thank you, Ronnie.
