With Richard shared Oprah Winfrey and the Eyewitness News team. Good afternoon, everyone. Right now, Baltimore City police are searching for the three inmates who escaped from the Baltimore City jail within the past few hours. Here's what happened. The three inmates, two of whom were armed, overpowered a guard captain around 915 this morning while on a laundry detail. The trio, then dressed in clothes, used for work, released prisoners and walked out of the jail. They went to the corner of Forest and New York streets a block away, and they commandeered the Good Samaritan Hospital alcoholism. Two people in that van were taken hostage. One came through the driver's side van and the other one came on the right side of the van. Which one had to go to? The one that had the one on the driver's side that had gone up. And what do you say to you? He just said, just be cool. You say, and I'm going to have to want some transportation or something. So where did you take them? What did they want? Well, they was confused as to where all of them wanted to go. They couldn't reach no agreement. We saw him when he was running up the street and got into the van. They told us if they wouldn't do anything to us, if they we car and we wanted to go, they put a gun on, you know, they put the gun on him. He had the gun in his neck. And I did see a gun. Did they verbally threaten you at all? No. Were you afraid? What? What happened? I was afraid. Wouldn't you be Frank Luber. The very latest on this story still happening on eyewitness news tonight at 6:00 with the main homeward crush of holiday traffic just getting started. Highway deaths in Maryland nationwide keep rising at an alarming rate. So far, eight people have been killed in Maryland. Traffic fatality accidents. The latest victim being killed in a wreck on the John F Kennedy Expressway earlier this morning. Last year, only four people have been killed during the Labor Day weekend period. Around the country, at least 400 people have been killed in traffic accidents. So if you still have to drive somewhere today, please drive carefully and drive defensively. Well, depending on who you believe, state troopers may be doing their normal job on Maryland highways or they might not. A state police spokesman says the job action by the troopers has virtually ended at the number of tickets being written is back to normal. But a union spokesman says he expects the slowdown to continue and in fact increase. The troopers are protesting low pay and working conditions. Many local buyers are out today. They're doing their part to try to keep the roads as safe as possible. They've set up coffee breaks around the area, roadside stops where drivers are feeling the effect of turnpike trance can stop off and get refreshed. Steve Frazier, an incident. Without the annual message from Labor boss George Meany. He now wants all the rich and powerful Americans to make the first sacrifices in the fight against inflation. Meany says that if that happens, the country's workers would be right behind me. And he says that workers who are the hardest hit by inflation always do their part. So it's time now for the rich to pitch in to this. Labor Day also finds many union workers on strike across the country. Firefighters are staging a second at this moment in Manchester, New Hampshire. More than half of that city's firefighters calling in sick today in a pay protest. In Ohio, striking migrant farm workers are marching on the state capital today, pushing their demands for higher pay. And shots were fired early today through a window at a distribution center for a supermarket that's being struck by a Teamsters union in California. Efforts underway right now to try to reach a settlement for the nation's postal workers and avoid a strike. Both sides in that contract dispute have until September 16th to agree on a new contract. I certainly can't because Dr. Katherine Briggs is the chief historian of the Land of Fairies. And she says people don't seem to mind believing in ghosts, but they have a problem believing in fairies. In her book The Vanishing People, Dr. Briggs says believing in the unnatural dates back to the Roman days. Right now, the annual Labor Day traffic desk tabulation is underway as the holiday comes to a close. It doesn't look good nationally or locally. The figures apparently show that speed crackdowns by police have not been very effective in reducing deaths. The count is up. At this hour, the national traffic death toll is over the 460 mark for the weekend. Here in Maryland, eight people were killed in highway accidents this weekend. That brings the yearly toll here to 455. And that's 19 more than this time last year.
