Dave's doing a good job. Hi, I'm Lydia Anderson and welcome to Evening Magazine. And I'm David Johnston. And you might have guessed that a little later on an evening, we'll be playing a game of table tennis or ping pong, if you prefer. And we'll be introducing you to two of the best ping pong players in the United States, perhaps in the world. And they're not you or me. I will guarantee you that they're not. No, they're not. No. Also, last night, you may remember we had a story on Randy Newman, the songwriter. Dave did the interview with him and his song Baltimore is less than flattering to the term city. It's not just about Baltimore. It's about a lot of cities, but it is called Baltimore. And it does kind of put cities down. But tonight, some encouraging news, right? The opposite side of the coin. We're going to be meeting a woman, an up and coming rock star named Ruth Copeland, who has written a who has got a new album out called Take Me to Baltimore. Ruth Copeland was born in England. She lives in New York City, but she thinks of Baltimore as her home. The town that she comes to to get an infusion of self-confidence. Going to be meeting her this evening and watching some of her performance at the Marble bar. She's a gutsy woman who can rock and roll with the best of them. Also in our evening department's Jack Eaton shows us how we can have the best launch of our lives this year. Jesse Green in our leisure department, visits the SPCA, which is a shelter for homeless animals. Donna Ray has some more exercises for us to do in the office.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747#t=62.87,146.18"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747/transcript/61539/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And Bob Smith is still in Columbia. Tonight, he finds a fresh seafood market in Joseph Square. And now let's go to the marble bar in the Congress Hotel and meet Ruth Copeland. See you back to work. No one ever hit spinning. But never to me. New York City did nothing for me. I a. Be with my. So. Tell me about him. Ruth Copeland is an energetic rock and roller. In fact, I've seen very few women on the American music scene express as much freedom as she does on the stage. She's a performer who's paid her dues. On stage, Ruth Copeland is a rough, tough rhythm and blues singer. Offstage, she seems to be a gentle and vulnerable person who takes her music very seriously. My mother died when I was 16 and then I was on my own and had to get my BLEEP together. So then I came to the States, you know. And then I got in with all these Detroit bands like Seger, and we had a band called Kelley Michaels in the Summertime. So we played all these Detroit bars for a couple of years and. You know, it just went on from there. We pay dues. Pay dues. It just not that many chicks in America that know how to get out and pay their dues. Chalk it up to. So much given. So to what? Too much blood in the air. Ruth. Why Baltimore? Oh, God. Baltimore is the only place that seems to be at home. It's the only place that I know that I can get a band together and come to Baltimore and get acceptance and at least a decent amount of criticism. Pro and con to go to other places. All have come to Baltimore first.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747#t=146.87,400.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747/transcript/61539/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Every gig done in the past four years. Baltimore is like a diving board to me. You know how you run out on a diving board when you first learn how to swim? Going to take a couple of bounces and you just get to go in the water. I'm never scared to go to. When it comes to people. Would you sit down? I'm going to get on. Got to. Get done. Get on the train. Go to. Yes, right. Let's see what Brett Favre. Jamie. Oh. Thank you both for joining us. We'll be back in one minute with evening departments. Ladies and gentlemen, as I promised, here is Dave System. I am a Unique design Inc. and thinks Burg, Maryland, where they make these incredible animated figures and and talking heads. We'll be hearing more from my friend Count Dracula here, as well as from President Carter and Abraham Lincoln, also from Ed Hilbert, who helps make these animated figures come to life right after Lanier tells us what else we'll see tonight. Hi. The stately building that you see behind me is Baltimore City College. And much of our show will be coming to you from here this evening. We're going to show you the class of 1967, the yearbook from Baltimore City College. That, by the way, is the year that Kurt Anderson, television news reporter for WBAL, graduated. You'll also be meeting basketball superstar Rick Barry. We're going to be finding out with this Golden State Warriors champion is like off the court. And then our evening department's John Way, It is going to talk about Richard Burton's new film, Equus and our health department. Dr. Joyce Brothers has some advice on how to handle a child's dream. And in our Discovery Department, Bob Smith discovers a tall shop for women in Colombia.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747#t=401.98,676.87"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747/transcript/61539/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But first, we'll go back to Dave, who I understand has made a new friend. All of the talking heads and animated figures start out at the same way here. A unique design with this mother mold made out of fiberglass. And inside of that is this are TV molds and negative. And inside that they put this urethane which makes the the head for all of the figures here. You may have seen these figures in amusement parks or in trade shows or any place like that all over the country. There are a lot of fun and many of them are made right here. And Ficksburg, Maryland. One on one. In this outward and physical ceremony. We attest once again to the inner and spiritual strength of our nation. And Hilbert is the president of Unique Design, Inc.. That is actually President Carter's voice. Yes, that's right. That's actually his voice recorded in his inauguration address. And what about somebody like Abraham Lincoln? How did you how did you get a voice for him? For him, we hired the actor and he admitted that Abraham Lincoln's voice, fourscore and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are okay. And you use President Carter's real voice for him. And you had an actor do Lincoln, but you did the voice for Count Dracula here yourself. Why did you do that? For one simple reason. Because I looking for I looked for a great accent, and then I realized it came from basically the same country as I did. It came from Transylvania. I came from Hungary and Transylvania. Belong to Hungary a long time ago. You make I find you make a great county, Dracula.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747#t=677.8,885.98"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114010/file/216747/transcript/61539/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Now, if you talk directly into this microphone, his mouth will move. That's correct. As in saving already. I see. Well, let me ask the counts and questions here. Okay. Count Dracula. Just tell me. Tell me what you can do. Oh, I can bring my eye for instant. I can move my lip, as you see. I can turn my head. I can move my arms. Like this. Mark Burton is the electronics designer at Unique Design. He and Ed worked very closely together from start to finish. Mark, how many combinations of things can can the figure do? Well, there's. He has horizontal and vertical head motion. We can directly move the arm of the other arm of. Can you move them up and across at the same time? Yeah. They're programed so that you can move them singly. Like I can move the arm. Move the arm up and then I can move it out. Move it back. Can move it down. Move the body horizontally. Mark, you have one of the heads here. Can you show me what's inside and what makes it talk? Certainly, Dave, if your you hold this, the back of the head comes off to expose the mechanism. Mm. In here we have the device that drives the mouth. As you can see with the lever and up top, there's a device that drives the eyelids. This particular head has led motion in mouth motion. So to turn it around, it will turn around. Give you an idea of the mouth working. And I can reach in there. I can manually operate the eyelids for you. Mm. I must go to sleep. But you should stay awake for all the good information coming up in the evening departments.
