We'll be right back. You're watching TV. This is Eyewitness News. It's morning edition with Don Scott. And one that. All right inside the North Point gutter. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. You can wave at us. Go ahead. Hello. How are y'all? Yeah, sure. Trick or treating as customers. It's okay. All right. Tell you what, it's, nice morning. It is sunny. It is going to be a nice day. I mean, it's not going to be like yesterday's 83 degrees. Got to love it. Oh, was it nice in the afternoon? What did I say today? I got the forecast. Move on with the show. Sunny skies, cool wind in the area today. Suburban temperatures. By the way, it's in the mid 50s right now. Suburban temperatures will probably stay there. We'll have a high today of 60 degrees. That's the forecast for BWI tonight. Kids. Be trick or treat and figure temperatures falling through the upper 40s. No real weather problems. Increasingly cloudy skies, but no rain in the forecast. It's going to be a breezy, chilly night, but overnight low of 34 degrees. Compare that to what it is now. Now let's taste with NASCAR the morning edition of 530, which tomorrow we think you're still the middle of the night. Temperatures were in the mid 50s 30 for this upcoming night. Tomorrow? The judge said yesterday it's more likely than not the identified officer injured his daughter, but he said that that's not enough evidence to find him guilty of abuse. The little girl is now four years old. The evidence against the officer included statements the girl made to doctors, her mother and other relatives that her father had. Touched her. Managers at Cal doors and the Golden Ring Mall will decide later this morning whether to open today after a fire there overnight. The fire broke out in a store room on the second floor. The store's sprinkler system contained the fire quickly, but smoke spread throughout the store. Here's Jane with the latest from the campaign trail. She's with CBS in New York. Jane, it's eight minutes after the hour. Sandra Hughes is with the Dole campaign in Tampa, and she joins us this morning with more. Good morning Sandra. Good morning Jane. Well, after months of claiming the economy's ailing, Bob Dole finally has his evidence, third quarter growth in the gross domestic product dropped by half. And Dole wasted no time in using that statistic to his advantage. All the false empty talk about the so-called Clinton recovery comes to an end today. America knows that this economy is barely afloat, but the latest CBS news poll finds that a majority of Americans think the economy is in good shape. And it doesn't appear Dole's other strategy attacking President Clinton's character is working, either because Clinton still holds a commanding lead, knowing the odds are high. Bob and Elizabeth Dole went looking for some inspiration before leaving Washington. I told others, let's drive by the Lincoln Memorial. I need to reflect about America and about the Republican Party. We are going to win this election, Mr. Lincoln. Dole claims he'll win because voters will realize President Clinton is taking credit for a strong economy that doesn't exist. Bill Clinton reports the president flew into Colorado last night where the race is closer than in most other places, his lead only in single digits here, and reached out to the audience. I felt a special kinship to this state when a handful of Bill supporters began shouting Mr. Clinton was ready with a warning to his own partizans, and his usual friendly putdown of the protesters, who were soon ushered out. If Senator Dole, or if Senator Dole or Congressman Kemp come. Here. Don't you dare do this to them. You let them have their say. The only reason. The only reason they're screaming is the truth hurts in Michigan earlier, where he is far ahead in the polls, the president followed the game plan for the final day, focusing on issues which appeal to swing voters, particularly women. We made unprecedented gains in the area of helping women to start their businesses here. And with yesterday's economic numbers showing rising real income and low inflation. Mr. Clinton couldn't resist a dig at Bob Dole, who said the economy was at its worst in 20 years. Two weeks ago, he said it was the worst economy in 100 years. CBS has that story also some chemical weapons in the Persian Gulf War with the stories in CBS, of course, in New York and our friend Jose. It is 34 minutes after the hour. Hardly a week goes by that it doesn't see some new disclosure about just what American troops really face in the Persian Gulf War. Well, now a former CIA analyst is accusing the agency of a huge cover up. David Martin has a story. It's a monstrous charge. The CIA has no intelligence. American troops were actually attacked by Iraqi chemical weapons during the Gulf War and is covering it up.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136441/file/253033#t=1974.64,2075.199"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136441/file/253033/transcript/71272/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But that is exactly what Patrick Eddington, who until last month was an analyst for the CIA, is saying. You're saying there are specific documents which say chemical weapons, were you? There are some specific documents that, in my view, as you as you look at them, would certainly lead one to believe that particular attacks were taking place. Eddington will not disclose details of the secret documents, but he says the CIA is deliberately overlooking the evidence. The Central Intelligence Agency has, in large measure, been intellectually dishonest in their entire approach to this issue. Would you call it a cover up? Yes, I would describe that as a cover up. The CIA denies there is a cover up and insists everyone else, both inside and outside. The agency who has looked at these same documents, disagrees with Eddington's conclusion. He's entitled to his own opinion, but the majority and the and the intelligence community assessment does not agree with the conclusion he came to. And for him to characterize that as a conspiracy just is wrong. CIA spokesman Dennis Box points out that the documents have been turned over to an independent presidential commission. The panel's deputy director hardly makes them sound like a smoking gun. There was nothing unusual about those documents compared to others that we have seen. The CIA claims it's a simple disagreement among analysts. Eddington says both he and his wife were pressured into resigning for having committed the sin of challenging the conventional wisdom. But the culture of the CIA is one that does not really welcome those who rock the boat, who question prevailing assessments, who question prevailing views. The prevailing view remains the Iraqis never used their chemical weapons against American troops. There's encouraging news this morning from the National Institutes of Health for people infected with HIV. Doctor Howard Taubman is back from California and brings us up to date on that morning. Good morning. Welcome back. Good to be back. People infected with HIV, the virus that causes Aids, end up with weakened immune systems, which makes them susceptible to a variety of illnesses and infections that we associate with Aids. Well, now, a new study in this morning's New England Journal of Medicine shows that patients who received interleukin two got a dramatic boost to their immune system. Interleukin is a natural protein which works to increase the primary immune cells, called T cells, which are compromised in HIV. Now, those who receive the interleukin saw their T-cell counts increase from just slightly over 400 to more than 900, a substantial change. Others in the study who did not receive the drugs saw their T-cell counts go down. But the researchers caution that this is not a breakthrough. What we do have is results that are promising, and point the way towards the possibility that this will ultimately prove to be of clinical benefit for the patient.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136441/file/253033#t=2180.14,2281.45"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136441/file/253033/transcript/71272/annotation/24","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"This study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, and NIH will soon begin testing IL two on an even broader group of HIV patients. Halloween should be all treats and no tricks, of course, and Kelly Lynn has some advice to keep it that way. This morning's medical minute. Good morning. Halloween is finally here, and so is the yearly warning to check your candy after trick or treating. The patient first dinner at Johns Hopkins at Green Spring Station will make that a lot easier by offering candy x rays at no charge tonight. All you have to do is show up between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.. You can also check your candy on your own by making sure that you throw away any candy that is not in its original wrapper, or anything that has a torn wrapper. Aside from examining candy thoroughly before eating it, you should also keep an eye on costumes. Costumes that fit too loosely could cause a nasty accident on Halloween night. Masks and head coverings should also fit well, allowing a child to see clearly. So examine your child's costume, examine your candy or let the pros at patient first enter. Do a candy X-ray free of charge. For more information on that, call 5832777. Again, that phone number is 5832777. I'm Kelly Lynn and that's your medical minute. Thank you guys. Six, seven and eight year olds may think they're ready for the haunted house experience, but look for a quick exit just in case. Nightmares and fear of the dark are quite common in the days following Halloween. Provide support. Relax the bedtime rules a little bit. Leave the hallway light on. Well, I think more often people who throw pans around and make pictures fall off wall, you know, without hurting anybody. If there are such spirits to do that kind of thing, you know. Well, you know, they say up in Gettysburg around that battlefield that more often than not, you, you know, you hear the sound of feet walking and. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I heard the laughter of a female on and sounded like a, drunken laughter. The laughter was an eerie, muffled laughter. Laughter as it got closer. But the doors were still coming closer to me, but the voice was still muffled in an eerie laughter. I just got more and more to the point of where I would not want to go towards the door, or open the door at all. To the point where I thought, hey, maybe my door is going to open. Adding to Wendy's encounter is the fact the inn stopped using room keys. Years ago, administrators tried to keep their pink apparition a secret for years, worried she'd scare away business. He's looking for vandals, mostly teens who are intent on egging and spray painting. We can, we can see any where we can stop them, maybe find out what they're doing and find signs of a crime there. Finally they had the major in charge of Towson put an extra 20 officers on the streets tonight. So all of these people down here. All officers. Officers or supervisors. Certain for Halloween. Halloween? Yes. And we decided this year, since it is such, a big day for kids and small kids, that we wanted to put enough cops out on the street to make sure that it was safe and if something big should happen. I listen to see where some problems might be developing in one general area. If I need to, I'll pull 1 or 2 people from a different sector over if it becomes a major problem. But all in all, police are fairly pleased with the effort to try to reduce the vandalism. Back to you. Well, Mike, what about, what are the police telling us about tonight's arrest? Anything big? Well, they have made a couple of arrests over in the Hillandale area. They had a juvenile and an adult who, pulled out a gun and tried robbing a little kid of candy. But because the police were so close, they were able to apprehend them here in Rogers Forge. Definitely. Some kids were throwing rocks. There were no apprehensions made in that. Well, give me 40 minutes right now. 50 degrees in Harrisburg. The coolest part we can fine up in Johnstown. Down to 37 degrees. It's still a very warm 60 in D.C., the cooler air taking as good old time, getting in 50s across the Eastern Shore. So it is going to cool down eventually. Temperatures in the Midwest running in the 20s and 30s today. So this cold air out there 6948. Normal is 62 and 41. West winds tomorrow about 6 to 12. We do have, however, a little ripple in the atmosphere, a little area of low pressure. See this precipitation? It's heading right toward Virginia. The northern sections of it will bypass the Maryland region tomorrow. So we're looking for a little bit of lightrillionain to develop, maybe as much as a quarter of an inch before it's all said and done on Saturday morning. So we'll get a little light rain drizzle tomorrow. Cool day damp. Not a nice looking day expected. And if it's cold enough and some of those higher elevations to the west, maybe some snowflakes mixed in, maybe up in extreme northwestern Carroll County, northern Baltimore County, maybe northern Frederick County. Minneapolis only in the 20s today across the Dakotas, 25 to 30 degree temperatures for highs this afternoon. This morning up in central North Dakota got down to five below zero.
