While 3,000 workers were home enjoying the day off, I was at the plant to see how long it would be closed. The assembly line that produces one new car every 60 seconds is quiet now. This is the only activity today on the auto side of GM's plant. These men are repairing a sheet metal oven on the roof of the factory. The oven is where the fire occurred last night. The oven is a part of the assembly line. It's used to dry paint on sheets of metal used to make cars. Not the entire car itself, but metal used in its assembly. So without that metal, the production line stops. And the quicker that oven is repaired, the better, say GM executives. They want to call in the second shift at four o'clock and get the line moving again. Each minute it is stopped means they're behind one more car.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149169/file/273793#t=34.91,89.43
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149169/file/273793/transcript/80281/annotation/3
Speaker 3: Well, the number of workers, I suppose, would be considered major. It's cause is still unknown. Since city firemen confined it to the oven itself, the rest of the plant is working as usual. These men are loading cars onto trucks for shipment to dealers all over the nation. The pickup truck line is right on schedule. GM is saying now the cost of the fire is minimal. No lives, one oven, and a delay in the manufacture of only 480 cars. Well, that wasn't the only fire in the city overnight. Eleven members of two families have to find a new place to live now after an early morning fire damaged their duplex. The two families live at 2212 Garrison Boulevard. They've been displaced from their home, which was badly damaged by smoke and water. Nobody was hurt because of that fire and the extent of the damage still under investigation. Baltimore Fire Department arson investigators have returned now to University Hospital. Overnight, another fire was apparently set in a trash can. This is the eighth fire at the hospital in the past week. This time, a trash can on the fifth floor near Pediatrics was set on fire. Hospital officials are sure someone is setting the fires, but they aren't sure who or why. A medical examiner's report shows that a 21-year-old Frederick man was strangled with a nylon rope. The body of Glenn Pullum was found Friday near Damascus, Maryland. Pullum's body was lying on the ground beneath the tree from which it apparently had been hanging. Police say Pullum's hands were handcuffed behind his back. The medical examiner's report says he probably died shortly after he was reported missing on March 23rd. Two area people drowned over the weekend. A 14-year-old Baltimore boy drowned in a boating accident on the Middle River near Essex. Sean Hopkins of the 4600 block of Clearway and two friends were fishing from a homemade plywood boat. It began to leak and the boys tried to return to shore but then decided to jump out of the boat. One of them was picked up by a passing boat. Another one made it to shore, but Hopkins went under and his friends couldn't help him. In the other incident, 32-year-old Tyrone Johnson of Allendale Road was found drowned near the Gwinn's Falls Park stream. Police say there were no signs of foul prey in Johnson's death. He had not been robbed.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149169/file/273793#t=101.57,229.55
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149169/file/273793/transcript/80281/annotation/5
Speaker 4: Well Steve, federal investigators are intensifying their search for the causes of last week's scaffold collapse in West Virginia. Nixon indicates he was merely trying to cut political losses and didn't realize he was getting caught in the cover up. In the end, he writes, it would make less difference that I was not as involved as John Dean had alleged than that I not as uninvolved as I had claimed. Intriguingly, Nixon expresses greater anger at Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor, than he does at the staff members who planned the break-in and then conducted the cover-up. About Cox, he says, he deliberately exceeded his authority. He was out to get me. As for the Saturday night massacre when he fired Cox, Nixon claims he was taken by surprise by the ferocious intensity of the reaction. Nixon says he did not want to appoint another special prosecutor. But with the public reaction, he was in no political position to prevent it. The tapes... People question why he didn't burn them. Nixon says they were insurance against the unforeseen future, but he admits candidly that from the time he decided not to destroy them, his presidency had little chance for survival. Speaking of cold, a cold night tonight for sure, but I don't think it's going to hurt these lilacs, which are in full bloom over much of the area right now. A little bit later this year, most years we have lilacs blooming on about April the 18th. Of course, we're about a week or two past that now. They're just going into full bloom, so pardon me. I'm going to sneeze. They are beautiful, they really are nice, and they're very frequent too. Let's take a look at what's happening around the area, right now it's clear. And it's definitely on the cold side. Temperatures are dropping. 47, 8 Celsius. The high today, 59 degrees. And that is, let's see, 13, 14 degrees below normal. Humidity, only 28% extremely dry air. The wind's northwest at 9. Barometer, 29.82 inches. And that's rising. Most of the weather around the United States today took place to our south. As you can see, an area of cloudiness from about the Carolinas. Westward throughout most of the Midwest into the northern Rockies. They've had some snow over parts of the mountains of Arizona, some pretty severe thunderstorms over Mississippi, Alabama, parts of Kansas and Missouri, some really good rains, two to three inches rain common baseball sized hailstones in part of the region especially western Mississippi getting some pretty good thunderstorm activity and eastern Texas. The reason for the bad weather down there, this real cold mountain of air which came down from Canada of course is dominating our picture. Clashed with the very, very warm moist area in the south, creating that very turbulent weather. They've had some pretty good thunderstorms. And that will continue, that same weather picture, for the next 24 hours at least in this area. This high pressure is sitting in all this bad weather. And it should keep it down to our south. So it looks like we're going to have a sunny but kind of chilly week. We'll have slight warming as this high pressure moves to the east during the next couple of days. We'll be getting somewhat of a return flow out of the southwest. Let's say by Thursday and Friday we'll warm up a little bit. But let's take a look at the map for tomorrow. With that warming, we'll also be getting a little more moisture on the back side of this coming in. And there's already showers and some more thundershower activity breaking out. There were parts of Colorado and Western Kansas. And this stuff will be moving in our direction. And we'll have to watch this low pressure system. It'll probably stay in the south. But the chances of picking up some showers will increase in our region. By Friday and Saturday, but temperatures will go up just a little bit, maybe near 70 degrees perhaps by Friday, which would be nice. Around the region now, only 43 degrees in Salisbury, 45 in Philly, 45 in Harrisburg, 39 out in Morgantown. Frost and or freeze warnings tonight from the Baltimore area in the northern suburbs westward. I think there'll be a little scattered frost in parts of Baltimore County tonight. Most of the activity from Frederick County and Cowell County westward, especially in the mountain areas. And uh... Clear conditions all night northwest winds tomorrow ten to eighteen here's the forecast for tonight clear and cold low thirty four to forty four five day outlook as i said a sunny week generally with a gradual slow increase in temperatures and it looks like we might see some light shower activity friday and saturday and tomorrow morning at eight a m a crisp forty two degrees by the time you uh... Start to leave the house in the morning if you're going anywhere. A little cooler than that in some of the suburbs.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149169/file/273793#t=2778.049,2976.93
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149169/file/273793/transcript/80281/annotation/97
Speaker 18: And the baseball game tonight, I understand it was in the thirties by the time they finished up in Boston. Residents of Selma, Alabama are picking up the pieces tonight after a tornado ripped through the town earlier today causing an estimated $1 million damage. The tornado hit without warning, twisting through a 14-block area of Selmer. The roof of the Martin Luther King Baptist Church was ripped off and the tornado sucked out pews and other contents of the church. Outside, gas mains were ruptured and utility lines downed. It was cold temperatures and there was wind blowing through the stadium up there Fenway Park and that had it was a big factor on some drop plays, fly balls flying all out all over the outfield with fielders chasing them. A couple of wild pitches thrown by Nelson Briles as well as Tim Stoddard came on relief. Here's a couple of highlights, and we mentioned this fellow to you, Carbo hitting it. This is Harlow out in center field. Watch how he plays this shot off the wall perfectly. Carbo thinks he's got a second base. Says, whoa, I'm going back. I think about this time, here Harlow plays it perfectly as Bunbury comes over in case he needs help. The lefty, a perfect strike to the bag at second. And Carbo says, I'll go back and get the first base coach, who told me to run. Second play here, this is. Freddy Lynn will nail one down. This is the wild pitch thrown by Brials. And the score, and then this is Freddy Lynn, nails one down the line, scoring Yastremski and Fisk. At this point, it was six to two.
