I was a dancer at one time and casting reminds me of dancing because you're using every part of your body, you're making moves within moves, and it's flow and rhythm. Women are really not new to the sport, even though their numbers have increased in recent years. In fact, the very first person credited with writing about fly fishing was an Englishwoman dame. Juliana Berners wrote a treatise on fishing with an angle in 1496. And yet, hundreds of years later, women fly. Fishers are still having trouble being accepted by fishermen. Just ask Bee Goldsmith, a fishing guide in Telluride, Colorado. They look around and they're like, Where's the fly guy? And I'm like, Well, I'm a fishing gal. And they look at me and they look around. They're like, Oh, you fly fish. But many men welcome women to the sport. Jeff Johnson, for one who loves to fish the rivers of Colorado with his daughter Laurel. She's just got a tremendous amount of skill that I think is untapped and down the down the years. She allowed fish her old man, well, she sticks with it. She won't be the first or the last woman to be hooked by the beauty of this sport. The weekend team's Greg starter has been following the story all day and has this live report. Greg, what's the latest on this? Still no word tonight on the future of Ben Chavis. Now, he came down a few minutes ago and waved to the crowd but did not come over and talk to us. This meeting was supposed to start at noon today. It got underway just after 130. Apparently, some of the board members had a hard time connecting with their flights. Sources are telling Eyewitness News tonight that there is a possibility the board will vote on whether Chavis should keep his job, but a spokesman would not confirm that. Meantime, supporters are hoping that Chavis can hold on to his position. Oh, with the NAACP youth movement holding an emotional rally, board members from all over the country gathered in Baltimore to discuss disturbing allegations facing executive director Benjamin Chavis. Police formed a perimeter around the national headquarters, and a spokesman for the organization says security was beefed up to protect Dr. Chavis. They have been discussing Chavis has also been under fire after former employee Mary Stansell sued him alleging sexual harassment. He also approved a so-called secret $332,000 settlement for her from ACP Treasury without the board's knowledge. Former worker Susan tends Deal also reportedly accused Chavis of similar allegations, but recently denied making such a claim. The executive director supporters believe the accusations are ludicrous. The last ladies say there was no sexual harassment. She said it was not sexual harassment. It was not, say this other woman, married, stands. We're going to take a look at the Stephanie Rollins case today. I don't think that's on the agenda for today's discussion. But you will at some point a dress rehearsal at some point. Is this Despite the mounting pressure on chambers, busloads of ACP members from Atlanta, New York and other branches came to Baltimore to show their support for it on behalf of black people of goodwill All throughout this country and supporters of Minister Farrakhan, we do, in fact, support Reverend Chavis. But some national board members have accused Chavis of poor leadership and mismanagement. The campaign, the straw doctor, she was as she was campaigning herself, as far as I know. Dr. Chavis has blamed the media for unfair reporting. And from the very beginning he has proclaimed his innocence. The spin you've been putting on these stories has been most grossly inaccurate. 59 board members showed up for this meeting today. The other five apparently had problems getting here. We do know that the focus of the meeting was on Mary Stansell, but at this point, the board has not come out to talk to reporters. Richard Gregg, you think the ACP is still in danger of losing major contributions because of this controversy? So we'll come back later and give you the latest. All right. Great. She's on her way over. We'll find out perhaps before this newscast is over, What will become of Ben Chavis? Thank you so much. Started reporting live from the NAACP national headquarters in northwest Baltimore. More perhaps in just a few minutes. In addition to all this, syndicated columnist Carl Rowan wants Chavis to prove claims that there's been a dramatic increase in ACP membership since he's been director. Rowan claims to have documents showing the group's membership dropped from 381,000 in 19 93 to 356,000 this year. That's a loss of 25,000 members. Rowan also disputes Chavis claim to have added 100,000 young people to the organization. He says there are only about 41,000 youth memberships on the books. And as you might remember, Jesse Jackson was a contender for the ACP job of executive director. Today, he says he's staying out of the conflict between Chavis in the board of directors. They're not to interfere in the internal decision making in that organization because it's a sovereign organization. And no matter what happens, band will survive. Police say he told his cellmate he wasn't feeling too well, but he did not ask for a doctor. Later, when a guard couldn't wake him up, a medic was called to the cell and Booker was found dead. This is our future for tomorrow. And we'll look at tomorrow like this. We'll start out with some sunshine during the early part of the day. I think we'll continue what we have right now through the early part. However, by midday, look for thunderstorms popping up here and there around the region and further to the west. Then a line of thunderstorms pushing through during the afternoon. We hold out the prospect of possibly having a severe thunderstorm alert tomorrow as a result of that. So if your plans take you out in the bay tomorrow, small craft advisory may well be issued. Southwest wind, 10 to 25 knots, 1 to 3 foot chop bay water temps in the upper 70s right now down at the ocean will take the storms a little bit longer to get that far to the east. So we'll have sunshine and then thunderstorms moving in 85, you're high on the beach. 70 degrees is the ocean water temperature. For tonight, it's a night of a full moon. It'll be full exactly at 2:47 a.m., mainly clear skies, little haze, kind of breezy, a pleasant overnight, a 72 and for Sunday, increasingly cloudy, breezy and humid. But look for thunderstorms and again, they may be severe during the afternoon hours.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115817/file/219685#t=1285.02,1372.83"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115817/file/219685/transcript/62469/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"86 degrees. He rushed for 172 yards last week, credits the passing game for his running success with the receivers out there during the routes, getting open and getting the ball and Tracy getting the ball to them. The defense has to react to the receivers leaving the running game a little bit more open. His contract, according to this teacher from New York, has been terminated. He told us that a statement was read to him right across the street by some of the people who were inside of the meeting. And according to the statement from this teacher, many of the board members were concerned about the image that the ACP has under Dr. Chavis. Six hours after the ACP board sat down, Benjamin Chavis was fired. But his supporters say Chavis will be victorious in the end. It was Chavis, his freewheeling style of managing the cpp's money that got him into trouble, plus his venerable reputation that got him into the fight of his activist life with the civil rights group he was hired to revitalize. It has certainly been a tension filled day and night at the national headquarters here in Baltimore. The weekend team's Greg starter has been following the story all day and night and reports now live from the NAACP headquarters. Hello, Greg. Well, first of all, the board admits this was a very difficult decision, but it's one they feel they had to make at this time. Some say it may have been the lawsuit by Mary Stanzel, which basically ended the career of Benjamin Chavis, as you know, a secret. $332,000 settlement that the board apparently knew nothing about tonight. Chavis, though, has a lot of composure, even though the board has decided it's time for him to go. He has been under intense pressure during the past two weeks. And tonight, Dr. Benjamin Chavis has been fired as the executive director of the NAACP. I stand tonight. A victim. Of an orchestrated campaign to defame. My character and my integrity. Chambers was being sued by a former employee and had also been accused of sexual harassment. ACP members say there was an overwhelming vote to terminate his employment. Chavis appeared to take it in stride. I am undaunted. Oh, come on. Unbowed and unbossed. I do not intend. To make any statements against the NAACP. It made it tough, Richard, for him to survive all of these allegations. Greg, what is the I know it's been a tough day and tension filled. What happens now to that Mary Stancil suit? The NAACP can survive this in terms of membership and and popularity without being facetious. I had a school teacher say once, when you first get out of school, you don't have enough money. At the heart of the plan is to cut off a source of U.S. currency by prohibiting Cuban-Americans from sending cash to their relatives. The president has also cut the charter flights linking Cuba to the United States. And refugees who reach Florida will be detained indefinitely. We'll go ahead and check out national radar because this kind of tells us where the action is. And certainly no surprise right now from this graphic. We've got thunderstorms west of the mountains. It's been a pretty wild afternoon and evening in Ohio. Heavy thunderstorms still persisting at this hour down to the southern part of the Mississippi Valley and over on into Texas. What this is, is a front. It's marching in our direction. This front will trigger some what we think now are going to be some pretty hefty thunderstorms for us tomorrow afternoon. Satellite view shows how things developed today. We did have some clouds offshore and some thundershowers that never really threaten the land areas. Few clouds on the eastern shore early this morning. Most of us saw plenty of sunshine today. It was rather warm. 88 degrees is our high. But this is August in Baltimore and really wasn't all that bad. The humidity was there, however. And that humidity, this front will take advantage of tomorrow to trigger those thunderstorms. We have the hot, warm, humid air in place and cool, dry air behind produces the boundary. And along this boundary is where these thunderstorms are produced. And tomorrow, that's going to be the big thing in our weather for the afternoon. We'll start out tomorrow, I think, with a fair amount of sunshine through the clouds. The clouds are will be moving in during the overnight. But I think we will see some sunshine during the early part of the day. Then thunderstorms popping up here and there, say around midday. There may be watches issued tomorrow. So you want to keep that in your plans if you're headed out towards high temperature tomorrow, get into the mid 80s, upper 80s, a little bit further to the east where the showers will arrive a little bit later. If you're headed out of the bay, keep those thunderstorms in the back of your mind. Maybe a small craft advisory will be issued tomorrow. Sunshine early in the day, some sunshine, anyway. Thunderstorms during the afternoon. Southwest wind, five to at least 25 miles an hour, certainly in heavy thunderstorms that could be much greater than that 1 to 3 foot drop, 78 degrees or so is our bay water temperature down into the ocean now because, of course, that's further to the east. Those thunderstorms will get there later in the day. So I'm looking for a little more sunshine at the beach. Air temperature reaching 85 degrees. Tension in the surf is around 70 degrees these days. So for the rest of tonight, we do have a full moon going for us. It will be exactly opposite the sun. That means exactly full at 2:47 a.m., mainly clear. Tonight, some haze. A breezy night, 72 will be our overnight low. And then for tomorrow. For Sunday. Increasingly cloudy, breezy and humid. And, of course, watch for those thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. 86 degrees will be Sunday's. I know that front when it pushes through will usher in a new air mass on Monday. I think it will dry out some Monday but it doesn't look like the front is going to push really cleanly by us. So the middle part of the week is a bit undecided at this point.
