It's a rather rude welcome to spring. Mother Nature appears to be playing tricks on us. Remember the scenes? Remember those Just one week ago we were enjoying summer like temperatures of 90 and above. But that has all changed. Snow started falling in the area early this morning in western Maryland, Garett and Frederick counties. They're all under snow. Emergency plans and schools in Washington County opened one hour late. Needless to say, the weather is rather strange. Marty has the latest on this untimely change of events Marty. All right. Well, first off, before we talk about anything, we need to look at some temperatures around the state right now in our area. Let's say the metro region, nine, Howard Carroll, Hartford. For that, for all practical towns purposes, Cecil County, Baltimore County, Baltimore City and Toronto County. And you folks right over here on the Eastern shore are no problem. Temperatures way above freezing. So if you see anything else within the next hour, hour and a half are going to be looking at what's known as and you said had some problems out in West Marion where temperatures are still below freezing. And there's your springtime weather. Ain't nothing out there but blue skies in the buggy. We'll talk about that in a little while, Don. Thank you. Can't get here too soon. The weather has not been helping. Baltimore City firefighters trying to put out a stubborn fire on a ship in Curtis Bay. Iron ore has been burning all night long in the cargo hold of a federal ray. Cranes were used through the night to remove the Or because fighting the fire with water just doesn't work. Which tough about it is when you put the water on it. It breaks the water down into its natural components, hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen feeds, the fire, the hydrogen gas or explode. And long as you're in open air, it's not bad. Authorities are still trying to decide whether to move the ship to Sparrows Point so the rest of the small window can be removed. There have been no injuries and no environmental damage. This morning, another city high school had its students step outside and challenge a new dress code to a duel. Last Friday, there was a similar scene outside Lake Clifton. Today it was Bergen Vo Tech High. Now we've got three people. Go, go. That, however, if they wish to rationally and calmly address what they felt was unfair or inequitable in the code, that we would work with them to help them make the appropriate kind of presentation. And that's what the protest leaders later told this assembled multitude, which was allowed to move out of the weather and into the auditorium. But they also assured these students that doesn't mean they're giving up. We feel as though it should have been a student government working along with the teachers here anyway to see if they were going to work things into our dress code. We should have some say about it. We should have something to say about what is valid and what is not valid. But yet all we get to do is obey what they tell us to do. And it's not fair. Maine is called me trying to get some things on a policy change which was adequate for us so we can live comfortably. That said, some of the protesters went back to class. Some did not. Some may even take their case and their principal assistant presentation to the school system and or board later in the week. Most Americans, surveys show, do know how to eat healthy, eat a variety of foods, have a balanced diet and don't overeat. And yet, according to a recent Gallup poll, many people don't use what they know when picking what foods to eat. In fact, more than two thirds of those surveyed say they choose foods based on whether they're considered good foods or bad foods. It's a trend that troubles dietitians and nutritionists, but Americans are still looking for that quick fix, that magic food, that magic beverage. They really approach food as an all or nothing situation. They think of food as either good or food is bad. They should eat more of something. They shouldn't eat anything of something. That type of focusing in on individual foods really doesn't pay off in the long run. It doesn't help us make wise choices in diet. Overall, quick fixes and popular fads still sway to many food buying decisions. For example, when asked what items they were eating more of these days due to health concerns, 52% of the adults surveyed by Gallup said they're eating more open. 48% said they're taking more vitamin supplements. For years, health experts have been telling us to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. And yet only 8% of those surveyed reported eating more vegetables. Just 6% said they were eating more fruits or juices. So what's going on here? People seem to view food as medicine that's either going to cure them of heart disease or cancer or some foods are causing heart disease and cancer. It's not nearly that simple. A psychologist at the University of British Columbia says left handers have a higher death rate than people who are right handed. His research also indicates more lefties suffer injuries requiring medical attention. And he says left handed drivers are twice as likely to have an auto accident. Crafter was a double winner in the female supporting roles for New York Stories and the TV series The Tracey Ullman Show. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal each received a trophy for their starring roles in When Harry Met Sally. John Goodman and Tracey Ullman also receive awards. Big Story of the Day 20th Century Fox is banning film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert from advance screenings of all of its movies because of remarks they made during a TV interview about the company's movie, Nuns on the Run. Both critics gave the film a thumbs down. Well, that's okay. It's their opinion. But Fox contends that Siskel and Ebert overstepped their bounds by attacking not only the film, but also the marketing campaign and reviewers who liked the movie. This could be a trend.
