Chuck, Actually, Don, we were just sitting here talking and it looks like some people are getting out because we aren't getting accidents. Now, one just coming in from the BW Parkway northbound in Prince George's County at Route 197. There's also a rescue underway in Prince George's County Road, 415 near the capital Beltway, an accident in Annapolis on Route 50 and the Route 450 ramp and also Route two at South Street. And Anne Arundel County, all of these involving some injuries. We had a vehicle fire also on the beltway, but looks like it may be off to the shoulder on the outer loop around Stevenson Road. We checked again with the major interstates around the area. And for the most part, the beltway is in good shape down around the harbor tunnels. No problems at all. 95 looks good all the way up to the Delaware line. And southbound is clear to the capital beltway. Hey, listen, we got an interesting call, Don, from a fellow named Bob Mayes. Bob's already been able to go off to work. That is because Bob and 25 of his neighbors got together and did not wait for public works. They just had to shovel out their whole street. This Baltimore City Arcadia, the Arcadia section of town. Betty Maze joins us now. Betty, how are you? I'm fine, Marty. Well, so tell us how this all came down. Was this yesterday that everybody got together? Yes, it was. We started to organize Sunday evening that we would start at a particular time. And about 930 yesterday morning, we all met out front with snow shovels in hand. We cleared the top half of the roadway and just started knocking on doors and got most of the people on the lower half of the street. And we're a two block one way street going uphill. But in the bad weather, we make it go the other way with caution, makes it work down to Walther Avenue, which is a major intersection that the city does plow. So the people on our street have access in and out of the roadway. And those people just worked great together. And this this was done entirely with shovels. Nobody had a snow blower to start off. No, no snow blower. There is a wall of snow on either side of the street. And we dug our cars and sidewalks out after we cleared the roadway. And you took it down to the pavement. It's down to blacktop.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136615/file/253306#t=514.289,617.31"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136615/file/253306/transcript/71387/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Wow. Well, we did it during the blizzard of 79 and 83. Most of the people have been around that long. Some of the newcomers just joined right in. And it's incredible. It's they have a way to get out to work if there are at a facility that is open, which my husband is and away back home. How long did this job take start to finish? I know you start to finish. We were down to Walter and broke through by 230. So it was five hours. Of course, you rest and take a coffee break now and then. But it happened. Well, that is really cool. I mean, you know, honestly, I'm seriously this is such a such an event that citizen participation is going to have to occur in some locations. It honestly really is. George Balog, you're in the city. George Balog mentioned yesterday it might be a week before they are able to hit all the 2000 miles of street in Baltimore City alone. So surrounding counties, Eastern Shore, you could just imagine. Hey, Betty, thanks for letting us call you. What are you doing today? Well, I'm staying home. I work at a doctor's office. And of course, people who are sick can't get to the doctor's office. Bye bye. In Arcadia, you've Arcadia. A big round of applause, you know, right down to Wolf and Borer there. They say themselves having to deal with a packed street. Yes, because a lot of city streets and, of course, some of the county streets. The troopers, Berger said yesterday, I believe we're going to be packed down. And, of course, that will with more snow on Friday. We want to not be around for a while. One of my neighbors started doing that yesterday when I got when I got home, there were already the street had them plowed once, but then there was another six inches of snow in the air, blowing snow on him. And so there were two ruts anyway. They started backing up and down on those ruts in and out of the hill. Sure. Just to pack it down. So it made it made it somewhat, somewhat passable. And I talked to Dick Moore from the Baltimore County Bureau of Highways yesterday afternoon, and he was saying that. For several hours yet today, they were still going to be dealing with what they call number one streets in Baltimore County. And they were going to break into number two and neighborhood streets after that. So it's going to be quite some time. Susan O'Brien has been with me all morning. And Susan, this has been one of many mornings that you have been here and all of your crew has been here as well. He also communicates with any other enforcement agencies in relays, any critical information that we need to know to do our job as best as possible. Is there any thought in the future of doing a Web site where people could log in with their home computers and connect with the center? Well, the future are already here, there, Don, because we're already on the website. Maryland Department of Transportation has a page on the Internet and you can tune in and you can find out about I'm DOD State Highway. I think MTA is going to be on there. We're sharing information. We're going to do a full weather here then go to a break, Deb, but there are monitors in the roads that can let state highways know the composition of chemicals on the roads, the condition of the water. We can even take a look at you've been looking at the monitors all morning. Tell us what you see. Well, I mentioned to Deb earlier when you were showing those communities that were digging themselves out, if folks can shovel their driveways to the right, if they're facing our state roads and they can shovel to the right, our crews will have a little bit easier time moving that snow along and we won't be plowing it right back into those driveways. And actually, if you can pile up on your front lawn, it's not going to hurt it out at all. If you already have 20in of snow on your front lawn, a couple more is not really going to hurt it. So you're facing the house. Thanks very much. I know you're facing the state road and you plow to your right. Okay. Well, you face the road and. Yeah, just don't throw back into the travel lanes. Here's a guy who was no doubt watching closely to your truck a from our traffic team with an update on roads in this area Chuck. I'm just thinking, boy, that's come a long way since the State Roads Commission had started doing these things a long time ago. I remember. Boy, boy. All right. Well, that information is good for us, too, because we have been getting good reports down towards the capital Beltway. We do have two injury accidents in Prince George's County and just enough traffic on the road now that you'll have to use caution on the northbound side of the B.W. Parkway at Route 197. It's a vehicle off the roadway and apparently overturned in the median strip. So it doesn't mean just because you're seeing dry pavement and even wet streets on these interstates, you can go flying because it can change very quickly. I just want you to mentally prepare for this. Once again, if we get a coating on the ground, it's going to be nothing that is going to set our dig out back. I said this before, I'll say it again, 24 to 30in, but another half inch of snow, Don. Most of them are right now, Barry, just like this one is. So what was probably going to happen is that they as they get these cabs out of the snow, they're going to be putting them on the streets. But right now, they're really not having a lot of luck with that. Some of the van services which goes in and help some of the elderly and the infirmed around those are running, but they're running a little bit late. And you may have long delays as far as the cab goes. They're only really doing emergency service right now and they're asking you not to call just yet. We started talking to Anthony Brown this morning, 530 on the list of bus lines they thought were they're going to get up and was like this and it's not expanded to like that. These folks are really earning a paycheck today. I think they started out with like eight bus lines open. They got far more than. Yeah, they sure do. Okay. All right. Deborah Stone has been all morning long down at the the the emergency operations center. State highways do have has an update. Well, the update, Marty, is that everything looks pretty darn good. The state roads which are monitored here are doing very well although there are a couple of small problems. Susan O'Brien is with me now, who is with the State Highway Administration. Susan, tell me what it is that is still a problem. We have it up here on the monitor. And Frank, if you can pan up, we can look at it. This is one of those instances right here on that right hand side of the screen. That's a lot of blowing, drifting snow that we are just trying our best to stay on top of. We really do appreciate it. You know, I think it's great you were talking about the D.C. suburbs there. And it's nobody's fault. There are a lot of people out there working really, really hard. But nonetheless, some of the stories are amazing. I'm saying every four letter word in nine different languages, shoveling snow, but it's nobody's fault. We got a call, though, from Joe Hyman in Westminster Carroll County in front of your driveway. There's a 16 foot drift. Yes, sir. Wow. How are driving our driveways going to be cleared by the landlord with a front end loader? There's no way. There's absolutely no way to get through that without people drift in driveways fill. Now, is it because of drifting or plowing or both? It's drifting. There's there's a berm where the plows were. But you see that car you showed on TV? We had a white Toyota that was one with nature. We waited for hours just to get to the front of the car. So you had the berm anyway from plowing and then the wind here when the wind hit and we're across the corn field and the cornfield gone. Now, you say to your landlord, is this an apartment complex? No. Okay. And have you been gambling at all? Yeah. You know, we've been down there quite often. We didn't plan on spending this much money. Okay. So that answers the next question. I want to see if you're spending a lot of money, though. Are you getting the room comp? Are you paying for the. We're paying for the room. Yeah. Tell him about a half million people just for the name Bally's and give it to you for free. We got to run, Steve. Okay. All federal offices in the state of Maryland are closed today as well. Now get to get your eyes ready and read about the rest of the closings. Don't go away. We're coming right back after this. You can't find a lower price. We guarantee it. All right. It is nine and a half before nine. Yesterday, we got a couple of visits from George Balog, the city director for the Department of Public Works, and he was talking about his side streets. George, are you on the line? How are you doing? Okay. How are you doing with the side streets in the city? We started our assault on the side streets and we're ready to go. We're moving right in. We have 400 men working on the side streets, and we're going to make some real progress today.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136615/file/253306#t=4099.64,4364.71"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136615/file/253306/transcript/71387/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Are you packin or are you using the front loader or both? We're we're using the front loader and we're packing. We've we did we worked all night. And we came to the conclusion that we you just can't get the bare pavement on the side streets. So we're going to pack. We're we're going to make them assessable for people to move in and out of them. Okay. And what kind of progress, what kind of percentage of the city have you hit already? And when will you touch base everywhere. We've we've picked areas in northeast, south and west. And right now, we're trying to hit everywhere. We're trying to get all the side streets, like with this force of 400 men out. Okay. You know, we get calls and people say wherever the city's in the city and nobody's come by, you'll you'll eventually get there, right? We will get there. And if anyone calls us, we'll call them back. Okay. 396 snow. That's right. And you can assume, you know, last night we heard George from Dutch Ruppersberger, and now in Richmond, we heard from Eckert and all the county executives. It's pretty much the same deal everywhere. Clear the main roads now. I guess the big push region wide is side streets. Why do side Street? No, I said I guess today is the big push for side streets. I you know, I'm having a hard time hearing, you know, Sorry, George. That's why we know you've got to go back to work. So go on ahead. And thank you so much for joining us. Okay. Thank you. George, Bailout was watch. I was watching our news last night. The dispatcher we did from 4 to 6 that I witnessed news at six. It was pretty much having a backhoe sack yesterday. We were all pretty much working a deal out. You know, I'd like to have a state highway, have a camera near my house so I could see it again. Speaking of houses, Lady called up and said she just looked up in her attic. Two feet of snow. She must have west facing east, west facing eaves. I'm telling you, weather the way this wind is blowing. You might want to go up there and check it out. So what do you do, Ron? If you have two feet of snow only? But if you've got two feet of snow in the attic now, you can't melt it. So what out here, you're standing up in your attic on top of the timbers. You don't want to step that your insulation. You might have a floor dropping it down in the thing, but put it in and can't put it in trash can bring it down stairs. It's about all you can do because you got to get it out because it's going to melt. And good luck to you. Wow. All righty. I want to go home, check my attic now. We got my shoe running around the near north side of Baltimore. Yeah. You're still at the igloo? I'm. I'm. I'm right near the igloo, but I. Okay, change the scenery here, man. This is a side street. I got to tell you something. Has anybody even. You know, I was looking at the side streets near Tree Hill on the way. People had had dug their cars out or made passageways. It doesn't even look like it's feasible there. No, not I mean, right now. I mean, I'm standing probably about a foot and a half up in the air. And that's an interesting that the snow is compacted since yesterday. This time yesterday, as you remember, I was going to plop and I was going all the way down to my knee. Okay, you're not sinking now you're in. Let's put it this way. You know, I'm not exactly a ballerina. Wait. You know, and I'm not sinking at all. And these people say that, you know, of course, they never had a plow come through because they're just too small. The street. Not that they wouldn't mind one coming through one of these days now. Yeah. But it is really just a mess back in this area. I like to also think while we're on Helen King, she gave me a nice cup of coffee here to kind of warm me as I'm standing in front of her house. And we appreciate what she's been out on the street since probably about 430 this morning. So, you know, but by the fact I was so used to being out in the in the cold last night, I just went on my and my back and built a little snow fall and just slept outside. I'll make sure that I got the one thing I wanted to show you here is, you know, people are saying, hey, boy, I just can't wait for it to warm up and get rid of this stuff. The problem is going to be is if that starts to melt and compact, we're in a whole world of trouble. So let's keep it cold until they get this stuff out of here. And I. I got to run, but I want to show you stuff, okay? You can't buy a snow shovel in the whole East Coast, right? Right. But you can make one tell us about it. It's just a burden to buy for the flour that. I thought he'd rip the no parking sign out. Look at that. And how does it work so well? Here you go. Okay. It's a good pusher. Ingenuity. Ingenuity. Mountain. James? Yeah. That's all there is to it, right? Anybody can make themselves a shovel. And I'd like to also thank my neighbor, Marie Hyman. She's. Let me borrow all her shovels, too. So there you go. Okay, Mike, we got to leave you now and do some things that are open and then come back and close up our morning coverage. So thank you, Mike Shu. He's been doing yeoman duty for three days and he got a call from a friend. Carl Schwartzman says I'm Westminster. During the 93 a storm it was until 9393 that it was until early June before all of this snow had disappeared from the parking lot and south and south thousand. Okay, You've probably read this opening sheet. So when we change the page here and these are things that are open today, again, another sign that things are starting to loosen up and they'll loosen up a lot more if you go out and help yourself and dig out the fire hydrants to get your car and remember to throw stuff to the right as you're facing the street, at least if you're facing a state highway.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136615/file/253306#t=4598.94,4692.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136615/file/253306/transcript/71387/annotation/48","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That's what we're hearing from a lot of people, that all the side streets and all this action is taking the initiative and everybody's going out there and going ahead and just getting it done. But once again, this is the day of reality, the day the big dig out occurs. Yesterday was just a lot of fun. It was an event. Yeah. But today, it's like all of a sudden you wake up and go, man, what am I going to do now? You got to go ahead and take care of it. Listen, speaking about digging out, you can see some more snow this afternoon over about a seven hour period. AccuWeather is calling it a light snow. Flurries could leave a fresh coating. Well, it's a coating, frankly, 24 to 30in of snow doesn't necessarily matter. It's not going to be enough to waylaid our our dig out effort. This is the weather moving our way right now to centers of low pressure, just essentially going to power right through the area. Behind it, more winds kick up tonight, sunshine tomorrow and a high of 34 degrees. Our next weather problem Thursday night into Friday. That will be discussed throughout this day. Looks like we could be getting some freezing rain and sleet Thursday night into Friday, which would make the current snow that that much harder to remove. Sure. So right now, I'm telling you, if you're going to move some snow off a sidewalk or driveway, get it done before Thursday night because otherwise get out the dynamite.
