Our crime beat report tonight shows that city police have arrested 24-year-old Ronald Lee Thomas and charged him with two crimes. One of them, the subject of our recent crime line reports. Thomas faces two murder charges, including the death of 50-year old Lindsay Hill, a special education teacher at Patterson High School. His body was found at his home on December 21st. Thomas is also charged with a November 2nd shooting death of 57-year-old James Schenck. He was killed during a robbery at a burglar alarm store. Thomas was arrested last night. He offered no resistance. He's being held without bail in the Baltimore County Jail on charges of armed robbery. The Baltimore City Jail, like the one in the county, has recently faced an overcrowding problem. But the city jail is nearing a partial solution at least. Right now, the jail population stands at 1,620. The eventual goal is 1,500, but officials say the state inmate population has been reduced and no longer are prisoners being forced to sleep in the day rooms. All are in cells. Right now the snow-ravaged Midwest is beginning to leave its mark here in Baltimore as major industry suffers from a part shortage. Frank Luber takes a look at the situation in Baltimore where it's actually costing employees a pay cut. I apologize, we're apparently having some difficulties with Frank's report, but hopefully we will get to it in just a few moments. I can't tell you now there's a somewhat brighter story at Sparrows Point where the big Bethlehem Steel Company has rehired 700 workers because of an increase in orders. The company laid off the employees because of a steady increase in foreign steel and a slump in general construction. Despite the return of the 700, there are still 900 workers who are laid off and there's no indication of when they'll be recalled. Now back to the story I mentioned a few moments ago with Frank Luber and the fact that the major storms out of the Midwest has caused a part shortage here.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149151/file/273768#t=418.16,553.5
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149151/file/273768/transcript/80283/annotation/15
Speaker 8: Here at the General Motors assembly plant on Broning Highway, the normal workday is two eight-hour shifts. Normally some 60 cars and 26 trucks roll off the assembly line here at the GM plant on Broning Highway per hour, but the total figure, the total number of vehicles coming off this assembly line will, needless to say, be altered somewhat until the weather conditions in the Midwest clear up. It's, it's colder than it's been the last couple of days. The high temperature is below freezing around 30 degrees and it's going to remain about the same the next couple of days, a slight reinforcement of some more cold air and a chance of some snow by Thursday morning early. And we could get some accumulation. I'll take a look at that just a little later. Currently, the skies are partly cloudy to clear over most of the eastern part of the state. Kind of cloudy out to the west and some light snow flurries out in the Garrett County area and also. Flurrie and Salisbury during the last hour. We have 26 here, minus 3 Celsius, humidity 47. The wind's west-northwest at 22. Barometer right now is rising, but that's going to change in the next 24 hours. Our wind chill, it's cold out, minus 5 degree, because the wind is picking up a little bit. Satellite tonight, most of the east appear to be pretty fair today. But coming in from the west, you see heavy cloudiness over most of Texas area, Oklahoma. They've been getting snow from New Mexico all the way east into Oklahoma and parts of Texas, some rain drizzle activity. As you can see, the east generally fair today. The heavy cloudiness over the south and southwestern part of the United States. And because of that cloud cover, a developing storm over parts of the Gulf during the next 12 to 24 hours promises to give us some snow. And it should be snow on late Wednesday night and most of Thursday. We could get four inches of snow on Thursday. There's some light snow out to our west over the Great Lakes. Temperatures are cold over the entire eastern part United States. Boston this afternoon had 29. We had about 28 this afternoon. 39 in Atlanta, a little bit of rain activity down there. 70 in Miami, which ain't bad, I'll tell you. 13 in Chicago this afternoon with some light snow. 8 in Minneapolis and further out to the west. More cold air coming in from central Canada. Two below zero up in the Great Falls, Montana. A 32 in Denver, which isn't too bad. West of this line, and this line has been pretty persistent most of the winter. West of the line, not bad. Temperatures generally in the 40s and 50s and down in the 60s in the desert southwest, Phoenix this afternoon, 65. A lot more rain moving into the northern part of California, Oregon, Washington, another storm system. Temperature's there in the 40s with snow at the higher elevations. Let's look 24 hours ahead because that storm, which will be developing over the Gulf states, although I don't show it on this particular map, we expect a large area of precipitation from generally Chicago southward right to the Gulf. Couple of fronts developing. This cold front will be advancing to the east. So we'll have an increase in clouds by tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night, and a pretty good chance of snow developing late tomorrow night and most of Thursday, as this whole precipitation package begins to move up to the north and northeast. Tomorrow's high temperatures, cold enough. Down in Richmond, around 34. Out in Chicago, 17 for a high. Up in Boston, northern part of New York state, most of New England, upper teens to around the 20 degree mark. We'll have enough cold air here. Especially coming in aloft, higher elevations, to give us snow rather than rain. The only chance of rain, perhaps a little bit along the Virginia coast on Thursday, all right? Here's the state map of this hour and the way things look. It's cold. Most skies are partly cloudy to clear at this hour. In the local area, 18 degrees only in Westminster, 23 in Pikesville and Bel Air, 27 in Waldorf, down on the eastern shore. A light flurry of snow in Salisbury. We did not get the flurry activity today. I thought we were going to get just kind of dried up. 24 in Dover, way out to the west. 12 in Oakland with some flurry activities. They have 29 inches of snow on the ground right now. 20 degrees in Cumberland. Another cold night and a cold day tomorrow. 10 to 15, we'll get a change in our wind flow. Begin to come off the Atlantic Ocean, pick up some more moisture as the storm develops and begins to move up toward our region. 10 to15 out of the Northeast. The forecast tonight. A cold night, fair skies, generally low from 12 to 18 degrees. Tomorrow, sunny during most of the morning hours in the afternoon. And then I'm looking for some after midnight snow. It's kind of hard to tell exactly when. High around 32. It looks like a snowy day on Thursday, high from 25 to 30. Could pick up four inches of snow. We'll just have to see how it develops. This winter's harsh weather, plus the nation's eight-week-old coal strike, is having crippling effects in parts of western Maryland. The Potomac Edison Company, which relies almost exclusively on coal to generate power, says it's almost down to a 30-day supply. The company wants acting Governor Blair Lee to authorize mandatory limits on the use of electricity. Including banning outdoor lights and shortening business hours. Potomac Edison will be getting some help from the city of Hagerstown. The municipal light plant there plans to reactivate one of its oil fire generators on Monday, which will supply 10 million kilowatts of power a day to city residents. The offensive guard is moving to a much warmer climate, which may take some of the meanness out of him. The city of New Orleans, where he will become a saint... Most of his reputation really just has been a big publicity hype anyway dobler and teammate ike harris the wide receiver traded to new orleans for guard terry stivy and defensive end bob pollard this afternoon so now dobler can end up tearing up the french quarter well lonesome george allen out of a job may soon have the one that he wants most the los angeles herald examiner uh... They'll be going back to the team that he coached from nineteen sixty six until nineteen seventy defensive backfield coach frank laudabre who was reported as resigning by the colts yesterday they said that he was fired he said he'd never even been told by ted marcher broda the redskin secondary coach ralph hawkins had been hired in his place laudaber was the only one of the colts assistants who was not brought in by ted Marcher Broda Well in view of the recent criticisms of Maryland basketball coach Lefter Dizelle, several people are coming out in his defense. Yesterday, Maryland athletic director Jim Kehoe gave him a vote of confidence. Today, Bullitt's general manager Bob Ferry said, Lefty's as good a coach as anybody would want. Ferry says nobody says anything bad about North Carolina's Dean Smith, who always gets the best talent in the country. But also has come up empty when reaching for the NCAA title. Now i don't think it's lefty drizzle's past record of accomplishments which have fired up all of the recent outbursts against him i think it has a lot more to do with his team's style of play this season lefty again has just about as much talent as anyone else in the a.c.c and granted he is playing some freshmen who start but so are the other teams however the turps seem to be playing helter skelter playground ball no direction looks like one-on-one everybody for himself instead of a little more unselfish discipline type of offense Maybe the only answer to the way they're playing now. Is to give the team five basketballs here's the comparison of the uh... Two wire service polls for this week's college basketball rankings there you see AP kentucky still number one in both polls AP has Arkansas followed by Marquette Notre Dame UCLA on the UPI poll Marquett North Carolina Arkansas and Michigan State running out the top ten AP has North Carolina sixth followed by Michigan State Kansas Louisville New Mexico on the upi poll the Bruins of UCLA Notre Dame New Mexico Kansas is ninth And Louisville is ranked 10th. Well, rebounding from their only loss of the season, a 16-point setback at Alabama last week, the Kentucky Wildcats never trailed, beating Georgia 90 to 73 last night. More than 23,000 fans came through the ice and freezing temperatures to watch the nation's number one team shoot 59% from the field. Georgia was held to just 34% shooting before intermission, while they also committed nine turnovers. The teams played on even terms in the second half as the Wildcats now improve their overall mark to fifteen and one and they take a two game lead into the southeastern conference jack gibbons who had eleven points by halftime led kentucky with nineteen points while kyle macy bombed over the bulldogs two three zone for eighteen on eight out of twelve from the field james lee came off the kentuckie bench to also finish with eighteen points georgia's now nine and nine on the year they got twenty points apiece from walter daniels and reserve forward Ron Webb. Well the washington bullets signed guard charlie johnson who they brought in last week to strengthen their injury plague team to a multi-year contract johnson was a teammate of phil shaneers at cal burkeley where actually johnson showed a lot more potential and shaneered it at the time but obviously phil turned out to be the more valuable of the two professionals the bullets are in san antonio tonight to play the spurs who lead washington by two and a half games in the central division of the nba Charlie Finley is not alone in his dislike of baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, fast food king. Ray Kroc of the Padres wants the commissioner fired. Kroc was also furious over Kuhns denial of the blue trade yesterday, saying we don't need a lawyer in the commissioner's office, we should have a businessman who knows what life is all about. And they tell me that if it isn't really the dealer's fault, they'll pay for the repairs. As for Sturm's lost work days, ARCO told me they'd make an appropriate settlement with him, but they don't know if they'll pay for the whole thing. So if Sturm isn't satisfied with the settlement, he may have to take the company to small claims court and sue to collect his wages. Friday, we should clear off. Temperatures, again, the upper 20s, very little change in temperature. It'll be cold. By Saturday, looks like another snow possibility.
