They had an assembly. Muhammad Ali was speaking and just and the girl introduced him up to the Palm Beach right now. I'm just I'm just testing this like, look right here in my hand. I hear my. Okay. In. Okay. You stay in the back. Okay. Burger. I'm sorry. No. And you got to keep it quiet because for the interview. Okay. Maybe you might just want to go upstairs or some person just go ballistic and he'll go ballistic, and then I'll. Now, first off, before we get started, let me have your name. Okay. Kenneth, spell it. K in T.H. White, Wayne White, senior I.t. And senior. And you? Where you live. What are you? Is this? This is the north northwest Baltimore Falstaff area. Just before you get to Pottsville. Sorry. So they call this Falstaff? Pretty much. Back around. What year was that, do you recall? 19, I think it was about 1981, if I'm not mistaken. 80 or 81. You were attending Northwestern High School right down the street. What happened? Well, we had an assembly in the auditorium. And to all of our surprise, because we actually didn't know Muhammed Ali was the guest speaker. And along with him, I think he brought one of the actors from What's Happening Show. I think it was Roger. I don't know his actual name and what Muhammad was on the stage talking and I don't remember exactly what he was talking about. And for some reason, I jumped up out of the audience and jumped up onto the stage and started sparring with him. I mean, I was doing my hands all around in the air and just making punches. And he started punching back. You know, how Muhammad was back then.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136815/file/253827#t=2.93,120.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136815/file/253827/transcript/71671/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He didn't want to be downplayed. And we had a good time for about 30s. And I had a ball. You jumped off the stage. All the people you were sitting with, they went for listening. They did. I had a crew out there in the audience that I was trying to impress quite a few friends of mine, actually. There was an Air Force Junior ROTC unit that just started at Northwestern and we all were going to join. And while I had applied to be the first lieutenant of a particular squadron, and most of those guys out there wanted to be in my squadron, so I had something to prove. So you had to show them a little example of your leadership capability, And that was the ideal moment. It was the ideal moment. So you seized the moment and the opportunity? Yes, I did. Well, how do you feel like you did? Do you feel like you handled yourself pretty well? Well, I think I did well for my age and the peers that I had trying to follow me at the time. But no, I don't think I did well up against Muhammad. No, At least I don't want to say that to you anyway. Well, Muhammad looked like he was. I tell you, I'll tell you the truth. Muhammad looked like he was a little surprised that you were handling yourself so well. Well, actually, I was surprised, and he seemed a little surprised. Is it the sort of thing you would do again? I mean, let's say Mike Tyson gave up and gave a little talk. To be quite honest, I probably would. Yeah, I've always been that type of person. I've always been the one to want to jump out in the middle of the crowd and display my talents, whatever they might be.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136815/file/253827#t=121.17,210.45"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136815/file/253827/transcript/71671/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah. Those guys that were in the audience and the gals, of course. Were you like a little mini hero there for a while after that? Well, actually, it was a talk at a school until I graduated. That was all anyone ever spoke about. Us, me, boxing, Muhammad Ali. And actually, I never had a problem with any of my orders or things that I was given or told to do to my subordinates after I joined ROTC, you know, because I was quite the hero. Yeah, well, thank you for all the ideas for what you. That's. Well, actually, I guess featherweight, I suppose. Maybe 105. I guess I was a pretty small dude. Well, you were pretty courageous, though. Chop it up. That was a heavyweight champion of the world. It was all a publicity stunt. But you graduate. Yeah. You wouldn't be here now. You were. You're born and raised in this area. Born and raised in Baltimore City. Temporary, as a matter of fact. You went to school in this area? Sure did. Northwestern. And of course, it was why you were at Northwestern when you decided to go through this thing. Sure did. Yeah. You were born in Put My Go section after you graduated from Northwestern. What did you do? Well, after graduating from Northwestern, enlisted into the Army, the United States Army, and deployed straight to Fort Sill, Oklahoma.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136815/file/253827#t=210.87,328.34"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136815/file/253827/transcript/71671/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And after basic training, I came home and married my high school sweetheart called elementary school sweetheart Charles Sweet Short. And I was training for about six months to a year prior to coming back to Baltimore. And your final rank was Staff sergeant. You were stationed in the Persian Gulf? Yeah. Two years after, of course, when it started, I left Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and deployed to the Persian Gulf. Were you ever there during peacetime? No, it was actually the conflict. I was over there for about eight months from beginning till the end of the Persian Gulf War. Okay. So this this thing with Muhammad Ali, just let me get this straight, was about 80 or 81. It's about 80 or 81. Had to be one of those. The Gulf War was 91. Yes. What did you do for those ten years? Roughly in between. Yeah. Just give me a short rundown. Well, after I got into the Army and I became a field artillery man, I deployed to many a post from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Fort Carson, Colorado, from Fort Carson, Colorado, to Berlin Brigade, Germany, where I was a drill team commander. So you went all over the world? Yeah. Italy. I went to Italy, did some time in Germany. The family and I. I brought the kids along and we were in Colorado, Oklahoma, and we had a great time. So then in 1991, you wound up in the Gulf and they wound up by themselves. Yeah. And so you saw some action over there quite a bit. So that training now a security officer at the Social Security Administration, that was part of your military training, I suppose? Quite a bit of it. You know, I think they trained me to do that more than anything else, and I enjoy it. So your experience in the military prepared you for what you're doing now? Quite a bit. And I'm also right now in training to become a military policeman. So that even more even helps a military policeman in the Guard. So for those two weeks every summer. Yes. And also, every time I go to the Army, which is twice a month, I'm a military policeman with the 29th Military Police Company. Well, of course you like what you're doing with the Social Security Administration. I love it. It's a great job. I meet a lot of great people. Any chance you're going back into the military? Well, being in the Guard, I never got out. Being with the Maryland Army National Guard has been a great fulfillment. And I'm still in uniform, just not as often as what I used to be. But there are a lot of challenges that the National Guard has given me, and this is who I am now. So if if if they do not, the Maryland National Guard is activated, you're ready to go on active duty? And what is your favorite kind of music that you enjoy singing? I enjoy soul music. Ballads. Like what, for instance? Always and for ever and stuff. I get soft songs saying a lot of love. Always and forever. And a little bit. Yeah. Right now. Always and forever. Each moment with. It is just like a dream to me. And that somehow came true. You have such a gentle voice for such a tough guy. I'm not tough at all of that at all. That's why I did it, because I wanted to be perceived as being tough. But I've never been very tough at all, and neither is Muhammad. So with all your background of being a war hero, decorated, of course, and you can you sing very tenderly and very well.
