With Jerry Turner, Al Sanders, and the entire Eyewitness News team. Good evening, everybody. Sanders is on vacation and Richard shares with us while is away. Right now, the world is in mourning for Pope Paul, the six who died yesterday at the age of 88. The pope's body is lying in state in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome. By late afternoon, more than 10,000 people had filed past the green velvet bear to view the body. Thousands more stood outside, singing and braving a thunderstorm. Flags in many countries are now at half staff and memorial masses are being held all over the world. One of many being held here was at St Alphonsus de Fraser, and instead I were there. At noon, the Bells of St Alphonsus Church told the Angelus Daily Prayer to the Virgin Mary. Monsignor Louis mandalas recited the prayer and then told me that Pope Paul said the same words every noon until his death. Monsignor mandalas was at the Vatican until two weeks ago and had an audience with the pope in June. I imagine that the poor man was in pain most of the time because of his athletic condition and his feet. That and everybody could notice when you walked and he walked just very and surely because somebody was standing beside to grab me. Fisher from around the diocese an entire day of special masses said for the soul of Pope Paul is set for tomorrow. Father John Gainey of the Baltimore Archdiocese said there will be a special mass in observance of the pope's death Thursday night at 730 at the Cathedral of Mary, our Queen 5300 North Charles Street. Another mass will be celebrated the day of the funeral in Rome. That mass will also be at the cathedral. The pope's body will be transferred Wednesday from Castel Gandolfo, where he died and will lie in state at St Peter's Basilica until the funeral. The solemn funeral mass and burial will take place on Saturday. After the mass, Pope Paul will be buried under a simple slab of marble in the grottoes under the massive basilica pending construction of an ornate tomb. Archbishop William Burroughs and Lawrence Cardinal Sheehan of Baltimore will leave here later this week to attend the funeral. Apart from his reign over the church and its 550 million Roman Catholics, Pope Paul also brought to the world a new people role of peacemaker. He traveled in the provinces of the people he served, even in his early years as archbishop of Milan. And he traveled as a pilgrim to the Holy Land. Soon after he became Pope Paul, it was the beginning of an unprecedented series of trips to six nations on six continents. I am an apostle on the move, he said. But he also once offered a glimpse of his personal philosophy, one that may have helped guide what friends described as a warm, private personality that was always partially hidden in public. Vice president and general Manager William Baker points out in this editorial, Pope Paul the sixth will probably be best remembered as the spiritual leader who guided the Catholic Church across the bridge between two eras. His 14 year reign was marked by conflicts between liberal and conservative elements of the church. He worked hard to keep the Catholic Church from being torn apart by these disputes, while he approved such historic changes as allowing the mass to be said in the local language rather than the traditional Latin, he strongly defended the most conventional Catholic principles, although he was basically conservative when it came to protecting the church doctrine. He was a progressive exponent of human rights. Pope Paul championed around the world the cause of the poor, hungry and the oppressed. There is a special link between Maryland and Rome. Coming up, it's already time to get ready to go back to school. And a city officeholder throws his support behind the county man running for governor. That report next right here on Channel 13 Eyewitness News. Tonight with a gubernatorial primary campaign heading into the final weeks, another candidate has gotten a big endorsement. Latin tuition starts at $1,850 for a first grader and goes up from there. So tuition tax credits are a subject of a lot of thought right now. Boys, Latin is typical of many of the independent schools in the area in that it has many families with two and even three children at the school at the same time. So for those families, a tax credit of 250 or $500 per child is substantial tax relief. So you'd think administrators here would welcome the tax credit with open arms. Actually, they have some misgivings. Independent private schools here, unlike parochial schools, have resisted any direct help from state or federal government. They fear Annapolis or Washington will add strings to the dollar's controls. Tuition tax credits, though, are different, less direct aid for burdened parents. I think that the difference may be that it's an indirect way of perhaps accomplishing the same thing indirect by issuing a tax credit that will be reported to the Internal Revenue Service, but it will not be a direct payment either to the parent or to the institution. So there won't be any strings attached. And that's really not that's a difficult thing to guarantee. The days of regulatory supervision. Part of the federal presence. I think it's the most that this is the best way to accomplish this kind of relief to tuition House parents. Headmaster Temple doesn't know if any tuition credits will win congressional approval. President Carter, he told me, opposes them favoring direct aid instead. The debate over their merits should be interesting. Mrs. Downs discovered she'd only gotten 15g of the medicine. He's seeing this, and he caught it. I didn't know myself with him. Meant for him? I wouldn't know. That's not even the worst of it. Rite Aid sells the 60 gram tube for $10.50. Mrs. Downs paid $5.33 for the 15 gram tube. And she would have needed four of those to get the amount her doctor prescribed. That would have cost her over $20 for four small tubes compared to about $10 for the one big one. Dr. Harry Robinson of University Hospital says this is not the first time he's seen this kind of thing happen. Doctors prescribed 50 pills, for instance. The consumer gets 40. That didn't happen in this case, they say, because the dispensing pharmacist was not a regular Rite Aid employee. He was substituting for a pharmacist on vacation. But doctors say prescription short occur all over town, not just by substitutes, but by regular pharmacists who've been in the business for years. We have discussed this with the medical and surgical faculty, and we are seriously considering approaching the Maryland Pharmaceutical Association and asking for help to see if it can be corrected. We will explain. I hope you and Bob Turkey will be here with this five day forecast. That's coming up next right here on Channel 13 Eyewitness News. And we're very happy to bring you the man whose namesake did this today. Pimlico. They finished second. That's right, Bob. Congratulations on placing in the ninth. Thank you. Was it the ninth? It was the Simonian Matrimonial. It was about time. Bob, you. After you getting your cut, your tail caught in the gate. Couple of years ago, I never thought you'd make it the second. But you ran a nice race, and it was a nice day for it. Lot of sun, I guess. You like a lot of humidity. Well, we can have a great week because it's going to remain about the way it is right now. The chance of showers and thundershowers every night for the next couple of days, as you can see. Temperatures tonight will only drop to about 70 to 72 degrees and we'll probably see some more thunderstorms before the night is over. Tomorrow, we're going to go up to about 88, 89 degrees, maybe even 90 degrees.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136035/file/252379#t=3114.71,3275.03"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136035/file/252379/transcript/70809/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Lot of humidity, afternoon thundershowers, again, a possibility. Hardly any change for Wednesday. I mean, hardly at all. At night, 80 to 89, 89 degrees, 90 degrees afternoon thundershowers again. That's where I've got the partly cloudy symbol out Thursday, again, with more moist air coming northward. It might be not not quite as hot on Thursday, around 86 degrees. There's just a slim chance of that frontal system moving through and getting slight three degree cooling is not going to make much difference. 88 or so on Friday. Little change then and on Saturday, very little change there, about 90 degrees. So the entire week show every single day warm, humid risk of afternoon or evening thunderstorms every single day. So we're going to remain on the rather humid side all week. And those showers will be ever present every evening. So you make make your plans according to that. Okay. I will do that. Thanks, Robert. And thank you very kindly. And I suppose this, in addition to Bob, takes the famous five day forecast. One of the things Maryland is best known for is its chicken. Not to be confused with the five day forecast eastern shores dotted with those long, low chicken houses. And not surprisingly, Marylanders are very fond of their chicken. As Marty Bass tells us in the nights, kitchen bars food. It says American is areas Americans like to eat food. And according to official records, the food Americans like to eat most is chicken. That's right. I said chicken. At any time of the year, at any given time of the day. You can always find somebody eating that chicken up. I want you to. On whether I like to eat chicken. Yeah, we call the chicken soul food. I just want a piece of pasta.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136035/file/252379#t=3275.73,3393.92"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136035/file/252379/transcript/70809/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah, And you can do so much more with it. Do you eat chicken? Why? It's reasonable and it's tasty. And that's I moved. And from all the people in the world. Thank you, chickens. We appreciate it. Colonel Bass, Channel 13, Eyewitness News.
