He talked openly of the secret conclave, smiling and telling how he sensed the danger of election coming his way, then quoting two cardinals who said, God would give him the courage to be pope. Luciani chose the names of his two immediate predecessors, suggesting an attempt to meld the openness of John the 23rd with the executive skills of Paul VI. The new pope also wanted simplicity, insisting that this formal elevation avoid the pomp of a coronation. And he turned his papal audiences into friendly exchanges, trading ideas and humorous insights rather than issuing solemn pronouncements. Only two days ago, he asked this schoolboy visitor if he wanted to stay forever in the fifth grade. The boy said yes to keep a favorite teacher. Well, you are different than the Pope, said John Paul. When I was in the fifth grade, I worried about making it to the sixth. You must move on, he said. Yesterday, only hours before his death, the pope struck a serious note. He told a group of bishops that the chief promise of Christ's teachings is, quote, eternal life. Papal observers believe the cardinals turned to Luciani in this formal conclave for at least three reasons. They believe that he was strongly opposed to communism in Italy. strongly favored church doctrines against divorce and abortion, and strongly grounded his theological ideas in church traditions. Those are some of the qualities they will seek in John Paul's successor. Among the cardinals who drew major support in last month's conclave, Sergio Cardinal Pinedoli, a former Italian military chaplain who has traveled the world as Vatican emissary to non -Christians. and Aloisio Cardinal Lorschider, a Brazilian who braved terrorist threats in his homeland before joining the Roman Curia. Another Italian, Giovanni Cardinal Benelli, the Archbishop of Florence, played a major role in Luciani's election and could find himself a major contender to become John Paul's successor. For now, however, the Cardinals must be remembering the spirit of John Paul I, who said, just before his election, I am a little man accustomed to little things. and to silence. He was also a socialist and opposed the idea of his son entering the church. But the Pope also had a strong, determined and religious mother who saw to it that her son started on the road to the priesthood. Later he admitted he had been hospitalized eight times and had four operations. Despite his frail health, he rose quickly through the ranks of the church. and in 1973 was named Patriarch of Venice and made a cardinal. He concentrated on what he did best, attending to pastoral affairs. He had no hobbies as such except a deep interest in religious art. He even taught a course in sacred art at the same seminary where he was a student, and many of the paintings and other objects were acquired because of him. The co -defendants of the suspended governor held secret ownership in the old Marlboro racetrack that benefited from state actions, according to trial testimony. Twice the General Assembly has passed laws requiring that track ownership be made public. But incredibly, the Racing Commission has still failed to adopt the necessary rules to enforce these laws. Horse racing is a source of great income for the state and entertainment for many of us. But it also has been a source of embarrassment, as evidenced by the trial and conviction of Mr. Mandel. Furthermore, both racing fans and the general public may be taken for a ride when the Racing Commission fails to tightly control the racing industry. Both gubernatorial candidates, Jay Glenn Bell and Harry Hughes, have promised that if elected, they would address the issue of regulating the tracks. One solution favored by both men is the establishment of a quasi -public, non -profit corporation to own and operate the tracks. This seems like a good idea for the future. The Baltimore Orioles finished the 1978 home season in great style last night. The Birds beating the Cleveland Indians, three to two, Jim Palmer picking up his 21st win of the season. Don Stathaus came in early to save the game for Palmer, earning his 24th save of the season. And Orioles' second baseman, Rich Dower, played his 85th consecutive game without an error. This ties a major league record. The O's finish the season with a three game series this weekend against the Tigers in Detroit. This weekend will also be crucial for the four teams still involved in the pennant races. First let's take a look at what's happening in the National League. There the Phillies play four games in Pittsburgh. The only way that Pittsburgh can stop the Phillies' hope for their third straight division title is by winning all four of those games. That seems to be unlikely. All right, now the Phillies have a three and a half game lead over the Pirates. Now look at the American League action. What's over there in the East? The Yankees still clinging to a slim one game lead over the Boston Red Sox. Now both of the Yankees and the Red Sox have three game series this weekend. The Red Sox playing Toronto and the Yankees taking on the Cleveland Indians. The National Basketball Association opens on October 13th but Bobby Dandridge may not start with it. Dandridge is involved in a contract dispute with the Washington Bullets and he has not yet reported to training camp. Dandridge says he expects to be playing this season, but team owner A. Pollan says he won't trade Dandridge. And it looks like Bobby Dandridge will either have to settle his dispute with the Bullets or sit out until next year. Some good news possibly that Colt quarterback Burt Jones may be ready to play in Sunday's game, but Colt coach Ted March -Brota is saying this afternoon that the team will just have to wait and see if the injured Jones will be ready to go against the Eagles. If Jones is not ready, then Bill Troup, Of course, we'll be starting at quarterback. Howard Cosell certainly won't win any popularity contest here in Baltimore. After Cosell criticized the Colts during two NFL Monday night games, Colts fans were upset and outraged. Now to vent their anger, a group of Colts supporters, led by Baltimore City controller Hyman Pressman, have placed an effigy of Howard Cosell inside a six -foot plastic dog house. Even as the pope's body lies in state, the cardinals of the Holy See are making plans for a new election. Under church rules, the conclave of cardinals must open by October 19th at the latest. Between 15 and 20 cardinals were in Rome at the time of the pope's death, and they met quickly to make funeral arrangements. One of them could be the next pope. Some of the leading candidates are Sergio Pinedoli of the Vatican Italian Sebastiano Bargi, considered before, the noted theologian Paolo Bertelli, Cardinal Franz Konig of Austria, and two other non -Italians, Johannes Willebrand, a Dutch ecumenical leader, and Cardinal Eduardo Peronio, an Argentinian. Tomorrow, at the Maryland Science Center, they're having their annual... farm day and they'll have Shetland Pony down there, some pigs, chickens, sheep, goats and an all -star review, whatever that means. That's tomorrow beginning at 1230 in the afternoon, Maryland Science Center, a lot of fun. It'll be a good day for it tomorrow. Let's take a look at what's happening right now and I'll show you what's going to happen tomorrow. Right now under clear skies after a high of only 67, we're down to 50 degrees, 10 That's all. 67 % humidity. wind southeast at 6, barometer 30 .29 inches, and it's holding steady now at air quality. Look at that, eight today. And that is one of the lowest readings we've had in a long time. And let's take a look at the pollen count today, which is also incredibly low. It was reading of only three grains per cubic centimeter. And to show you how cool it is out there, look at all that sorgas and steam and junk that's coming out of the city. That's growing underneath the city. Thanks for watching! really a lot of bacteria down there and they give off a lot of heats and that's part of the uh... heat visible heat from the uh... sewers believe it or not don't dump your coffee in the sewers that's what happens we're downtown of course let's take a look at the satellite tonight and we'll show you what's going to be coming our way a lot of clouds down in the southern part of the united states they've had showers and thundershowers down there this funnel system a low pressure system right there is moving in an east -northeastern direction that means this stuff will be in about 24 hours. Clouds also out to the west over the Great Lakes, moving in our direction. So we're gonna get it from two, perhaps two different sources. And that brings up a real good chance of some rain here by Sunday. Here's the frontal system down to the south. Some rain down there. Hasn't been real heavy, except along parts of Florida coast, up to an inch or so of rain. And this shower activity out to the west. So this is moving east, this is moving to the northeast. Tomorrow's map will show you how much closer it's gonna be. Although I don't think it's gonna be quite as well organized as it is right now. should take the form of some showers right along this cold frontal system and as this front moves toward our region the clouds will increase and the chance of showers will also increase especially here on Sunday. But after that fair weather should move in because this high pressure system over northern Texas clearing things out, temperatures up there in the 50s, a lot of frost in that vicinity tonight. We had a little bit last night, there's a very slim chance that we might get some tonight because it's going to be just a little bit warmer because the winds are of the southeast off the ocean. 51 Dover, 49 Pikesville, 48 Hanover, only 46 in Martinsburg. Take a look at our forecast for tonight. A clear and cold night. Lows in the 40s tomorrow, mostly sunny, but some clouds coming in late around 72. Sunday, clouds, some showers, 70. Monday, partly cloudy, 74. 74 on sunny Tuesday and a 76 Spiritus for next Wednesday. It's a long time from now, but that's the way it looks. Tomorrow morning at 8 a .m., a partly sunny, a few clouds. 50 degrees as you get up at 8 o 'clock if you happen to, to walk the dog or whatever you do. Take out the trash. Get the newspaper. Sammy Stewart, even his record one -on -one, he's a losing pitcher. Slayton, who just declared himself a free agent for the Tigers after this season, won his 17th. But they resulted in losing that ballgame. Let's go to the scoreboard and see what else happened tonight. There's the Orioles score, the Yankees scored, the Red Sox took no prisoners tonight, beating the Blue Jays, 11 to nothing. Stanley, his 15th win. Rice became the first major league baseball player in the American League, that is, in 41 years since 1937. To get 400 bases, Joe DiMaggio was the last one. The last major league player to do that was Hank Aaron, back in 1959 for the Milwaukee Braves. so that still remains. One game difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox, and two games left to play. Now in the National League, Pirates and Phillies had a double -header. The Pirates won the first one five to four in the bottom of the ninth. In the second game there, you see one -one in the seventh.
