Here's what people are talking about tonight. Your heads were in for a blow in Howard County. It's like going in down trees, one of which claimed Gary Gray's car. A real winter surprise when we opened our eyes this morning, an unexpected snowstorm. But when it hit first and lasted longest in far western Maryland, more than a foot of snow fell all over Garrett County. That's where Eyewitness News is live with Alex Dietrich, who starts our team coverage. Hi, Alex. Well, hi, Kyra. We're in a little town of accident that's about midway between the Interstate 68 and Deep Creek Lake here in Garrett County. And it is the part of the state that was hit worst by this storm. Well, we were supposed to have a video report there. Unfortunately, the tape is not rolling. I can tell you that we have a quite a bit of snow here in this one area alone. We've got about 18in I can show you. Right. If we take a walk over here, maybe John can pan out.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136488/file/253073#t=5.02,107.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136488/file/253073/transcript/71185/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"This is one of the really small drifts. We've seen them here as high as five feet. That's because there's been a great deal of wind here. The snow began falling last night at 5:00. It fell all night. It fell most of this day. It only tapered off about two, three hours ago. And things have calmed down enough now. But these blowing winds caused a lot of trouble. Western Maryland was not for wimps. The snowstorm that blew over the rest of the state dropped down and howled in Garrett County. It started last night and roared on most of the day. It's not for people. It's about like the North Pole at winter. Just it just cut it. The heaviest snowfall came along the ridge lines. How much is hard to say because strong winds kept moving it around. Piling it up in drifts as deep as five feet. You can't kind of figure out how much is falling here because you got too much wind. But I think we've I would say we're in the neighborhood of 12, 15in here. Blowing snow had plows going over the same stretch of road more than once. It wasn't until this afternoon that things started to improve, If you can call this an improvement since late last night, it's been miserable. Wind visibility was zero all night long. We've had separate block for a good portion of this morning, this stretch of Interstate 68 between Lavelle below US and West Virginia, somewhere above us up here it was closed to all traffic because of blowing wind and whiteout conditions. And those white outs and high winds played havoc with truckers. Along Interstate 68, trucks flipped and flipped at many of the higher passes. There's like a fire truck or something. Another accident I let off. Slow down for that. And this weather took its toll. For those who didn't have to hit the road, there was still plenty of digging out to do. This is one of the heaviest we've had quite some time. About the only people who got a break today were the kids. Snow shut down all the Garrett County School. And all of this snow would not be exactly welcome in Baltimore. Here in Niagara County, in western Maryland, this is really a godsend because they've been experiencing some very low water table, some drought conditions. And this snowfall will go a long way toward helping that water to rise back up. Hi, Alex. What a mess tonight. I can tell you are actually knee deep in it. What are the roads like and do you think you'll make it back? Okay. Roads are actually improving now. We're told there are only three roads that are still closed here in the county. They expect to have them over the next three hours. The fact that the wind has died down has really helped things out. All right. Thank you. Eyewitness News live in Garrett County, Alex Demetric reporting. For most of us in the area, the sudden snow didn't cause many problems. When most of us went to bed last night, there was not a flake inside, at least of the frozen variety. But this morning was a different story. Eyewitness News is live at the Carroll County Airport in Westminster as Mike Shu continues our team coverage. Mike? Well, I tell you, Sally, the wind may have died down out here, Alex says. Slick going and downed trees, one of which claimed Gary Gray's car. Now, we have brought this tree down across the road. And I struck this tree and slid off the bank here. Nearby, this elementary school was closed after these trees toppled. Well, we had some trees broke off down the road here. They brought several when I was down, broke off some of our cross arms on our poles. Well, they're having fun in Sparks. No school. Hereford zone or the Hereford Zone. Why? How about that? Wouldn't you like to be jumping up and down on that trampoline on this cold day? Those kids were actually fine with that. How slippery has it been outside? Well, let me show you here. This, of course, is this area on State Road, 97 cars off the road. We understand throughout Carroll County a number of times cars have gone off the road in the slippery conditions. Talking to the people who run the road system around here, they say that they're going to be out all night. They had many trucks out, but tonight they're probably going to have eight trucks and graders and other small assault equipment to keep these little trouble spots, maybe as small as 15, 20ft or as big as a couple hundred yards. I actually feel like there's not a not a drop of snow here, at least in the city, in some of the shaded area just a little bit. But the key word today was when we had some pretty strong wind gusts. Let's take a look at the weather window at the wind blowing this afternoon. We said we'd have gas near 50 and we did get about 49 miles an hour right here on TV. So very, very windy conditions. Any old limbs were breaking off a tree. So we had some problems with some of that. The winds are going to be dying down. Right now. We still have winds of 25 or so. So it's still a breezy condition and the wind chills have been down in the single digits most of the day, despite the bright sunshine this afternoon, a lot of melting going on. So he sued. The problem is that the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act applies only to older workers, which the law defines as those over age 40. If an older worker can prove that age was the reason for the discrimination, well, that worker is going to collect a nice paycheck from the jury. But this worker was 25, so the employer tried to get the case thrown out, but the worker won. Listen to this. The court said that there are separate state, not just federal, but state laws that also prohibit age discrimination. And many of them don't set any lower age limit. Police are keeping people away from a potentially dangerous oil spill in South Baltimore. Eyewitness News is live with Cathy Fowler, I-95 near Hanover Street. Kathy, what can you tell us right now? Well, fire officials feel a little bit more comfortable what's going on, but they still say it's a potentially dangerous situation here on South Hanover Street. Behind me is the house south, the Hanover Street onramp to I-95 south. And you'll see that hold there. Just on the other side of that is where a gas tanker crashed and overturned. We're told that the tanker was carrying 8500 gallons of gasoline, about 1500 gallons had spilled. Civilians have been told to stay away. One bystander was told to put out a cigaret told that there is a potentially explosive situation here. Now some of the gas is spilled through a storm drain, but luckily fire officials say that it has been contained before it contaminated the harbor. Now we have joining us Hector Torres, who says that there is also another situation. Gas fumes. People are complaining of smelling gas fumes downtown. Cathy, we got a report from Light Street, which is about 2 or 3 blocks east of here of gasoline fumes in homes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136488/file/253073#t=3661.03,3769.65"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136488/file/253073/transcript/71185/annotation/38","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And we think that the situation is actually pretty good because of the wind conditions. Most of the gasoline has been contained is a drainage ditch with gasoline in it. We're going to clean that up. The gasoline on the ramp has been covered with an absorbent material. And again, we believe that this is under control at this point. Okay, great. Thank you very much. So, as you can, you just heard this terrible wind is actually helping the situation. Another thing to let people know about that South Hanover Street is closed at Wells Street. Also, train traffic has been stopped and business is one block east of Hanover Street have been evacuated. Back to you. Well, Kathy, do you have any information on exactly how this accident happened? Well, police we haven't talked to any police officials yet, but we have talked to a few eyewitnesses that they say they saw the tanker as it was going on the onramp, and they think that it was going too fast and it actually overcompensated and crashed into the wall. Okay, Kathy, certainly a story we'll stay on top of and report back as is necessary. Thank you. And now to our other top story, Justice in a murder that saddened a South Baltimore neighborhood. Now, by mid afternoon, the wind is in full gallop. This snow is in Carroll County, in Carroll County, near Westminster. The wind is picked up, making it easy to find a waist high drifts or in this case, chest high drifts north of town. Slow going. It's crazy. It started last night. That's the first time I've ever seen a rain thunderstorm in the snow all in the same night. Okay. Here's the deal. If you live in the Westminster Kennel County area, the area I've been in for the past couple of hours, I can tell you this. Most of the blowing snow is probably over. Here's the reason why it is blowing so hard up here. And it's gotten so cold and most of the snow is going to blow. It was blown away. There's a thick crust on this snow. And that means that we're probably not going to have as much of it, thank goodness, tonight. Back to you. Well, Mike, based upon those conditions, it's going to be necessary to have the plows out tonight at all. Well, they are still because, you know, even though this is what we see, they still have to be ready. And they say that they're going to have about 8000 graders for these back roads just to make sure that they do stay open. Okay. Mike Shew in Westminster, thank you. Bob's live outside to show us what we missed, thankfully, But we missed a lot of snow here in Baltimore, I suppose from the city on south with very little really accumulated around the metro area. We had anywhere from about three inches the Beltway to about 5 or 6 or so in northern sections of Baltimore County. But out in Westermann, they really caught it. As you said, Alex, the major continues our coverage of the storm with a report on Garrett County snowstorm in western Maryland was not for wimps. The snowstorm that blew over the rest of the state dropped down and howled in Garrett County. It started last night and roared on most of the day. It's not for people. It's about like the North Pole that way. And it just it just cut you. It wasn't until this afternoon that things started to improve. If you can call this an improvement since Leonard Park last night, it's been miserable. Wind visibility was zero all night long. For those who didn't have to hit the road, there was still plenty of digging out to do. This is one of the heaviest we've had quite some time. About the only people who got a break today were the kids. Snow shut down all the Garrett County School, Alex Dietrich, WJC Eyewitness News. As we mentioned earlier, an estimated 70 million people watched last night's televised interview with Monica Lewinsky. But in his commentary tonight, Michael Lester asked, did anyone like what they saw, Michael? Not if they have even a shred of personal dignity. Monica Lewinsky wept little tears for the ordeal she's put her family through, but she should have shed a few tears for her country as well. This is a 25 year old woman who looked like a giggly 14 year old sharing makeout secrets with one of her junior high school girlfriends last night. It may have made for good television, at least by the standards of ratings, but it made for a terrible indictment of American culture. This woman almost brought down a government. And for two hours, she's answering questions like, Is the president a good kisser? And what do you mean by phone sex? Barbara Walters, the interviewer, likes to call herself a serious reporter, by whose standards? I defy anyone to show the difference between her standards and the National Enquirer's. Without this kind of a program, how difficult with maintaining these programs would be Almost impossible. Westport Elementary hosted the kickoff. It joins Lakeland School as the program pilot for this effort. We're so pleased, excited because it will help us reach out to the community. Injury news not good news for the Oriole faithful. From sea to shining sea. As we learned earlier today that Oriole second baseman Delano DeShields has suffered a broken bone in his left hand. Being able to catch, you know, her about a little bit, so decided to give it up and try something else. And with that, a new era has begun. After a ten year run behind the plate, Chris Hoiles is giving way this year to the newly acquired Charles Johnson. I'm in the right place. You won't get what you want. What one acquired by way of trade. He's been there for a long time and he knows the system. He knows the league. It's just basically how much sales tax do you pay when you have a coupon? I can never remember to take the coupon. Well, you know, there are two kinds of coupons. Especially if it's something he uses every day. Dube It doesn't smoke, but in the heating business, he uses lighters every day. So these seem like a real bargain. Five lighters regularly priced at $3 for just $0.99. Well, that's just $0.20 a piece. But he could only get that price at the nearby CVS store with a $2 manufacturer coupon. I purchased it, went to walk out the door and was looking at the receipt as I was walking out the door and noticed $0.15. I had made my money and cashed out before I even, you know, gave it a thought. When he did think about it, he noticed a $0.15 sales tax on the 99 cent sale. In his mind, it should have been just $0.05. I asked to speak to the manager and a manager came out from his office and explained to me that with manufacturer's coupons they they have to charge a tax on the sale price the state of Maryland requires. I said I didn't think that was correct. And he said, Well, if it means that much to you, here's the $0.10. Under the law, it depends on the type of coupon. With a manufacturer's coupon, you pay a tax on the full price before deducting the coupon. But with a store coupon, you only pay a tax based on what you actually pay at the register. You're probably wondering the reason for the difference. Well, in Maryland, the amount of the sales tax is based on the total amount of money in the transaction. In this case, the store got a dollar from the customer, but it got $2 when it sent in that manufacturer's coupon. So the total amount of the transaction here was $3.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136488/file/253073#t=6527.08,6623.05"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136488/file/253073/transcript/71185/annotation/66","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Based on that, the sales tax was correctly calculated by the store. Let me ask you, sir, what about big purchases? Say I'm going to buy a car. Well, the same thing applies. Know you have manufacturer rebates, you have dealer rebates. If it's a manufacturer rebate, you pay that 5% on the full price of the car. If it's a dealer rebate, you only pay it on what you really pay for the cards after that, that dealer rebate.
