There you go. We'll see you at 25 after those five up. So pick up on that right now. Our CBS crew in Nagano can try to pick up your cup. The address is CBS. And welcome home. He's getting his gold medal back. Ross Hardy wins his appeal against Olympic officials who disqualified him for testing positive for marijuana. And practice makes perfect. And that's what American figure skater Todd Eldridge is shooting for tonight. Same is true for teammate Michael Weiss, who is trying to nail down the quad, a jump that could decide who lands the gold. Good morning. Welcome to Nagano, Japan I'm Jane Rossville. Good morning everyone I'm Mark McEwen. We've got two great hours ahead of us this morning as we continue our coverage of the Olympic Winter games. Plus, Martha Stewart will be, along with a taste of the Orient. I remember. In Japan, slurping noodles is totally acceptable. Just don't do that at home, folks. Also, there was a silver lining in the cloudy skies over the alpine competition today. I'm Jose Diaz-Balart in hockey about some of the men's downhill. This nasty weather has caused the race to be delayed. What do all the fans do? Where do they go? I'll show you. Coming up. We're going to be breaking out the later hose this Thursday morning, the 12th of February. Man, it was a nasty day. And now going on around here today felt like London and, maybe springtime temperatures. What was about in the 40s? Some 30s grand. And they were canceling events up in Hakala as well. Today was one of those days when you were very happy to be an athlete who competes indoors. Olympic organizers here sweating more than the athletes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039#t=2.93,131.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039/transcript/71322/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So after a few days snow, it's rain. But that's Mother Nature. Some people were saying the reason why it's raining. You know, Akebono, who was the grand sumo champion, who opened up the games, he announced his engagement, which is like Priscilla and Elvis women who are upset all over Japan. Maybe that's why the clouds opened up to Big Man off the market today. With a big rainstorm to go with it, and a big story that we told you about yesterday. A stunning turnaround today for Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebel Yachting. He was stripped of his gold medal by the International Olympic Committee after he tested positive for marijuana. I'm in captain of CBS sports is here with the latest. Good morning. Good morning Jane. You know, for Ross, out of the last 24 hours have probably been the longest and most torturous of his life. He arrived at the hotel, though smiling and triumphant, just moments after the dramatic announcement. There was no legal basis for such a decision. So, the athlete, will keep his medal. The decision came after Ray Liotta and the Canadian Olympic Association argued their case before the Court of Arbitration for sport. They claim the IOC's decision was excessive punishment, and that the snowboarder had been unfairly singled out for optional marijuana testing. The panel agreed. They ruled that the IOC does not list marijuana as a prohibited substance, and while not condoning its use, a representative of the court had these words. For the IOC, it's a clear message that if the international sports bodies wants to to sanction such a use, they should have been clear rules, which is not the case. And in the medical code, I think what they didn't realize is the, the, the magnitude of the event they were coming into.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039#t=131.67,229.16"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039/transcript/71322/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Just hours before the board's decision was announced, Reb Elliott was mobbed as he entered a local police station for questioning to determine whether he had violated Japan's strict drug laws. But for now, one thing is clear when Ray Liotta returns to Canada, he'll go home with the gold. Well, the decision by the appeals board was unanimous, and it cannot be overturned by the International Olympic Committee. I mean, is the IOC concerned a little bit, though, that this might be sort of a blanket statement that marijuana use by athletes is okay? Well, no, the panel was very specific, Jane. What they said was this is a legal issue. The athletes have to know upfront what they're testing for, what the banned substances are. And that just wasn't the case here with marijuana, where they said it may be sanctioned and it may be tested. They had to be more specific. Okay. So the Court of Arbitration ruled that he never should have been tested, that he was unfairly singled out. When would an athlete not be unfairly singled out? I think what happens with the federations and the athletes and the organizations like the Olympic Committee, there has to be an agreement up front at any competition, whether they're testing for marijuana, whether they're testing for cocaine. The athletes have to know in advance what they're testing for so these problems don't occur again. And then another snowboarder today was yeah. These guys are making. Yeah. Jumping into trouble. The Austrian snowboarder Martin. Yeah. Finesse. Yeah. He had that. There was a, what was called a riotous party at his hotel and, the Austria Federation to their, on a good thing said, you know what? Too much party and you're out of here. They revoked his credential, and he's on his way home.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039#t=230.09,320.18"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039/transcript/71322/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Martin. Tell me what you told me. Because you haven't experienced either one of those experiences. Yeah. Everyone still do. A lot of people can go to the bathroom and they're still at the drug testing place. So they postpone the awards till tomorrow night. All right, but what did it feel when you knew that you'd want a medal? It felt great. I mean, I don't know, I can. I don't know, it's hard to explain that it's is something that I never thought it would happen. And I'll start. Snowboarders are different. Stoked is a word that snowboarders use. You can watch all the snowboarding action tonight on CBS prime time coverage of the Olympics. Jane. Thanks, Mark. The Iceman cometh. This place is buzzing the closer we get to the start of the men's figure skating competition tonight. The short program promises to be long on excitement as skaters like five time U.S. national champion Todd Eldredge looks for Olympic medal that he's never won. He was practicing earlier today, as was Canadian Elvis Toyko, three time world champion, the favorite going into the competition. And another strong contender for Olympic glory is Russian. Illya Kulik was going through his practice paces as well. Today, the gold medal in men's figure skating could well come down to one thing who can land that triple jump? Harry Kaufman is here to tell us more about the quad. Quad? It sounds scary, hasn't it? The quadruple jump that is four full revolutions in the air successfully landing on a single blade. It is the greatest challenge facing the men on ice here in Nagano. The question is, will he or won't he? You know, we'll have to wait and see on that. The quadruple jump is so difficult that even five time U.S. national champion Todd Eldridge won't commit. It's a question of, if I want to risk doing that, this competition. Fellow teammate Michael Weiss is determined to take the chance. Like I said, I'm not one of the favorites, so I need to try something a little more special in order to, to catch people's attention. This isn't an easy one. How tough is the quad compared to anything else in skating? It's it's a very physically demanding jump. I think a lot of it has to do with the training in the practice that you put in throughout the year.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039#t=502.87,604.19"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136448/file/253039/transcript/71322/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Training it, you know, there's a lot of falling and practice and, and, a lot of, a lot of, just soreness from it. How to take a look. You have to generate enough momentum to both lift your body into the air and propel it around for for complete turns before landing on one foot. You really have to get some speed going, and you really have to slam your your foot down in order to make that happen. Can it lead to more injuries? It could, I think, I do a lot of off ice training so that, my body can handle the punishment a little bit better. You know, the pounding from towing into the ice. A lot of times it's in your joints, your ankles and things like that. But it's a jump that's. It's very difficult, for me to do on a consistent basis every time. But, you know, I rely a lot on on the adrenaline, the excitement of the competition. For most of the male figure skaters, landing a quad in competition is the ultimate test to do it under the lights, cameras and the days of the judges. There's the quad. Russia's 17 year old Alexei you're building has nailed his quads in four competitions already this season. Count on him to put one in his program. And then. Eli, a colleague, another Russian, is a skater known for balancing artistry and athleticism. In practice here at Wyoming, he consistently hits his quad toe loops, although in his last competition, he blew the landing. Canada's jumping sensation Elvis Boiko continues to push the envelope. And, I think I'm in the position now where that's what I have to do. So what he wants to do is the quad lutz, which is even more difficult than the quad told him. Well, don't expect to see any quadruple jumps or quad combinations this evening. The short program is for required technical elements only. Tonight you'll see that in the free program, this one little breather than for the guy who was the first person to land a quad in competition. United Nations arms inspectors have found evidence Russia agreed to sell Iraq equipment that could be used to develop deadly biological weapons, according to the Washington Post. Russia has been pushing for a diplomatic end to the showdown with Iraq. On the home front, the Senate could vote today on a resolution backing military action against Iraq. One anyone who's watched figure skating, particularly the pairs figure skating in these Olympics, has really felt for all those performers who fell right at that moment when they most wanted perfection. Now, earlier you mentioned that Japan was upset or not upset, but beat by the USA 10 to 0. USA looked great. It was a fabulous game for them. Let's take a look at a few of their goals. After a tightly contested game against Finland, the USA women's ice hockey team continued their impressive run for the goal against Japan. The scoring started early with five goals in the opening period. This one a Cammy Granado pass to Harvard University grad Sandra White, who earned her first goal of the Olympics, making the score 3 to 0 early in the contest. Less than a minute later, Gretchen Julian, another Ivy League from Dartmouth College but a great pass to Shelley Rooney right on the doorstep. She puts it home 2918 into the second period. Some people would say that's running up the score, but there is a reason for them scoring so many goals. Can you tell us a little bit about that, Ellen? Absolutely. I saw Coach Ben Smith out here. He was scouting this game and I asked him about the game against Japan. He said, you know, you hate to score so many goals, but in the format, the way it is, you have to because if Finland was to win tonight, it would have been a three way tie and it would have gone to goals differential. All right, Ellen Weinberg, I'll see you Saturday. Great. Look forward to it. Thanks a lot, Jay. Thanks, Mark. Well, the Olympics are all about overcoming obstacles. I hope you don't get too sick. No, I know, I know, but but there is a certain you great friends, your teammates, you've made it to your ultimate goal, but there has to be a little bit of competition. There is. But like, well, I think it's healthy competition, you know, I mean, we're to the point where when she's in goal, I don't sit there being like, oh, I hope she'll turn a bad goal. I'll make her look bad. And coach put me in. I think at this level, there's just doesn't make any sense, you know? I mean, we're playing in the Olympics, we're playing for our country. And, and to have, you know, petty problems, you know, selfish reasons for being here just doesn't make any sense. So that's how I look at it. I agree with our I think it's a healthy competition for both. Sarah. No matter who gets played more or starts in the final game, the chance to win for their country in the Olympics is what it's all about. We're living our dream right now and very exciting and trying to take everything in every day, every everything that happens in the memories. I'm like, oh, but I'm on this bus too. Like, all right. When you're little, you watch Olympics, you watch Opening Ceremonies. And I mean, I just want to take everything in and have fun with it and obviously do the best I can for my country and for my team, the guys, the hockey players. You've got these guys that are superstars, multi-millionaires that are having problems not charging. They're playing in because you know, they're not comfortable in first. You ladies are a little different than that, for sure. And obviously there's no money involved for us. You know, obviously we're playing because we love the game. And so when we started, there's no place for us to play, you know? I mean, we played because we liked it, not because we ever had hopes of this thing in the Olympics. It wasn't even an option. You know, we were young and playing in the NHL wasn't really an option either. So earlier that day in practice, I'd been watching Sarah as opposed to Sarah blocked shot after shot. And I've been reminded of a practice a couple of weeks ago when I'd actually gotten the puck pastor. I'm going to Nagano. Did she tell you that? She confessed in here about it.
