And a controversial new drug sting where police are selling the crack. The bizarre story of a man who became a woman who became a man. I'm an actor and I guess that was probably one of the greatest roles I've ever played in my life. Now, here are Donna and Steve. When Christina Onassis died tragically last week in Argentina, the obituaries rehashed her life with some pretty tried and true clichés things like poor little rich girl. Well, people have always been fascinated with the lives of the super rich, and she was certainly that. But she never seemed to be very happy. But evidently, the story is more complex than just wealth causes unhappiness. Tonight, Shannon O'Hara digs back into Christina's Greek roots. Last week's funeral for 37 year old Christina Onassis was a final act in a sad drama of a woman's life that had all the elements of a Greek tragedy. Even as she was mourned, mystery shrouded the circumstances of Kristina's death. The official cause has been given as a heart attack. But a lurid list of possibilities remains. The juiciest gossip is that she died on barbiturates, just like her mother in her. And it makes a better story. Fueling the fire is speculation in Greek newspapers that includes drugs, suicide and even assassination in Athens. The local people believe a more romanticized version that the Onassis family is cursed. Whatever the cause, the mystery of her death merely perpetuates the real life Onassis family soap opera. Two years ago, author L.J. Davis tried to get behind the myth of the Onassis money with an unauthorized biography about father and daughter. What Davis found was a family who never believed the old cliche. Money doesn't buy happiness, although Aristotle Onassis definitely thought it did and taught his children that it did.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370#t=276.56,391.5"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370/transcript/70811/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But tragedy of Christina's life is that she believed her. Christina's life was anything but normal. She and her brother Alexander were raised in a world of wealth that staggers the imagination. Much was made of the fact that her dogs were dressed by the year. Much was made of the fact that the music box in the children's nursery on board the great yacht that was named for her, the Christina, was in the form of a monte Carlo slot machine. Christina herself was raised largely by servants whom she disliked. Whatever family life existed soon ended when the parents divorced. Christina grew up to be a shy, withdrawn teenager. She also began a battle with weight problems that lasted for years. According to Davis, Aristotle's whirlwind marriage to Jackie Kennedy came as a real shock to Kristina. How did she feel about Jackie? Just like her was intensely suspicious of her, as was Alexander. Let me give you an example. At the wedding feast. When Jackie toasted the daughter in the room, Kristina fell into her father's arms, sobbing wildly. Then, as if in a Greek play, the gods of tragedy plucked away one by one. The people who Kristina loved most. Within a span of two years, her brother was killed in a plane crash. Her mother died, and then her father died at 25. Kristina Onassis was very alone and very rich. Added grief included legal problems with her father's will. Christina and Jackie were soon engaged in a bitter money battle over the estate. Christina was quick to clear her stepmother away before she could challenge this, which she did. So she bought Jackie off for 26 million? Yes. As a businesswoman, Christina was quite capable of keeping her father's fleet afloat. But her personal life was another story.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370#t=392.52,511.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370/transcript/70811/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"She had rocky seas with a total of four disastrous ill fated marriages. She first married a man that she described as a dinky millionaire in real estate, Joseph Bulger of Los Angeles. Second, the arranged marriage to Alexander Andreadis, whose family had a pressing need for $20 million. Third to Sergei Danielovitch of a Soviet shipping company official, less to Terry Russell, which finally produced something that she wanted most in the world to child. But that, too, sadly, did not last. Well, the epilog to this Greek tragedy is that Christina leaves her three year old daughter with a $100 million estate. It can only be hoped that this world of wealth will be a lot kinder to Athena than it was to her mother. In the end, I think one can say that it was the money that killed her. It was rumored that Christina was about to take her fifth husband at the time of her death. Other people said that she was just using that man to try and win back the affections of her fourth husband and father of her only child, Athena. Of course, Athena is Christina's sole heir to the estate, which is huge, will be administered by trustees and Athena's father until she comes of age. According to the articles I have read about her lifestyle, it seems there is another little rich girl in the making. Myth inside a police crackdown. Or today's winning lottery numbers. Keep watching for details. Despite the best efforts of one of the finest police departments in the country, drug use is on the increase in Baltimore City. Part of that is due to the easy availability of cheap crack cocaine for years across the country. The war on drugs has focused mostly on the dealers, but with the problem becoming more acute, one California law enforcement agency has taken a different tact. They're focusing on the users in an unexpected manner. This is an actual drug deal. Rock cocaine crack is being sold. The crack is real. But this pusher is a cop. He's. Many urban police forces are losing the war against growth. So here in Inglewood, California, an all out battle is being waged. And since all is fair in love and war, police have deployed a daring and controversial new tactic. We're outnumbered generally and oftentimes outgunned. They have better weapons than we do. And we get to these locations. We have to instill fear. We have to make them think we're crazy. Crazy like a fox. The past six months, Inglewood police have made more than 400 arrests. With a plan many people thought would never work. Many of these things we rock and roll as we go along. After weeks of planning, a crack house controlled by a notorious L.A. gang will be raided after the strategy is set. Officers rendezvous for some last minute details and then pile into several vehicles for the operation. Phase one is about to be implemented. The reverse sting bust. There is a never ending supply of employees waiting to work in these places. The money's great. The people that work in rock houses don't control that operation.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370#t=719.61,838.02"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370/transcript/70811/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And we, the police, will come in, seize a little bit of dough, take those people to jail, and the boss just puts in more employees. In an ordinary sting operation, Undercover police will buy from drug dealers. And here's where the reverse sting comes in. After drugs, weapons and pushers are rounded up and hauled off to jail, the police don't close up shop. They go into business themselves, selling crack with their own employees, undercover narcotics officers. In this undercover war, local police are sneaking behind the enemy lines. I'm not that interested in the nationwide epidemic. I'm a police lieutenant for the city of Englewood, and I'm interested in what's going on here. And I know the answer to this problem is to attack the buyer. This driveway is the entrance to a crack house. What buyers don't realize is that undercover cops are selling the drug. Armed with ten and $20 bags of crack and wired with hidden microphones, you want to avoid losing a case by entrapment? An officer cannot offer the drug. He must be asked for it. These arrests appear to be violent, but according to police, this show of force is meant to overwhelm a suspect before anyone gets hurt. And we have to use these kind of tactics. And by using and I'll just use the phrase NFL tactics. It's actually safer in the long run. We've made over 400 arrests on these sting operations. Over 400. And there has not been a serious injury. It comes as a shock to junkies on the street that the crack house has been transformed into a mini police headquarters while drug deals are going on just outside. Police officers, search book and process buyers. What do we have now where we're not in operation an hour and we have seven prisoners. That's terrific. That's absolutely terrific. It's going almost too well. There's an arrest made every five minutes, but each arrest has the potential for disaster, as any undercover police officer understands. The main thing that goes on and goes on in my head during the transaction is whether I will be recognized. Although we have enough undercover officers around for protection, my family prays for me each time I go to work. I think if it were left to their choice, they would not have me or assigned me to work undercover narcotics by prayer, by work, or by skill busting. Busted more than 40 suspects and no one got hurt. It meant taking risks. But as the stakes go higher in the war on drugs, who knows how far police must go to win the battle? I'm glad the police are here. We have people that got jobs in here. And I'm saying that like they sleep, they got children. Why do you think most of the families moved out here with small kids? Because they threatened to kill. It's read in here like they crazy. They don't answer to some. You know, it's pathetic. We don't discriminate. We arrest dealers, buyers and those in possession. Everybody goes to jail. Don't come to Englewood. If you're going to buy your drugs. The program was Lieutenant Carter's idea, and Inglewood was the first police department in the country to try it. Now you're done in Steve. Steve, have you ever seen the play Arsenic and Old Lace? Sure have. It was at, I believe, the Mechanic Theater a year ago here in Baltimore. A couple of old ladies who who were very kindly and gentle while they were killing their borders, were there calling the case out in Sacramento, the arsenic and old lace murders. Of course, those mass murders are far from comedy and they are quite real. In fact, the suspect in this case is a grandmotherly woman who seemed to be helping out those who are less fortunate. But in reality, she may have been helping herself to their money and her neighbors are shocked. To me. She was just, you know, the type person, you know, like you'd want for your mother. The one I knew was harmless. Absolutely harmless. She was as good to me as my own mother was. Dorothea Montalvo Puente. A kind neighbor. Generous friend. When police dug up seven bodies in the well-tended flower garden of her Sacramento boarding house. Suddenly those who knew her had to ask Could their nice neighbor be a mass murderer? She could be a very nice lady. Other time she had turned very mean of children. On her way to school would come by and step one foot on her grass out front. She'd call them names you wouldn't want on the air. She had a vocabulary that would make any sailor blush. Back when she's mad at somebody. Your favorite expression was I'm one mean son of a bitch. By the second day, they had uncovered two bodies wrapped in the fetal position. Dorothea was questioned and released and ran away wearing a red coat and purple shoes. She religiously hosed off the sidewalks at 4:30 a.m. every morning, rain or shine year round. She'd do that for about 15, 20 minutes, and then she'd come inside to her flower garden in the front where one of the bodies was found. And on the other side were I guess a couple more were found and she'd and we'd put her around with Marie Place plants, plant bulbs, that sort of thing all the time. Detectives speculate Dorothea's motive was money. In 1982, she served time for drugging elderly victims and robbing them of their Social Security checks. But at Henry's bar, where Dorothea was a regular. Friends paint another picture. Carol lived in the house on F Street, slept in Dorothea's room and survived. I can't believe that she would. I care? But could this 59 year old woman have acted alone? But no, she could not have done this better stuff. I understand now that they found pictures that show she was at one time. Last summer, at an Eastern Orthodox camp in Pennsylvania, a lot of people believe that a miracle took place when several religious pictures wept. Camp. Nazareth is quiet now. The summer fun. Just a memory. This place has always been special to George, Kansas. He used to come here as a camper, then later as a counselor. It was here. George says that he witnessed a miracle. That at that moment, when it did hit me, when I had that impact was when I said to myself. Hey, wake up. This is what it's all about. In this chapel, George and over 200 others claim to have seen 19 religious icons weep actual tears. The phenomenon was proclaimed a miracle by the Greek Orthodox dioceses of Pittsburgh. Those who witnessed it believe the tears were a deeply personal message from the Virgin Mary and God. I've always known what was right and what was wrong. But yet I would still do what is wrong. But with this, this told me, hey, you know better. You know what you have to do? Do the right thing. We see it also as an appeal, calling people back to faith. Father John Chacos is the pastor of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Mt. Lebanon, outside Pittsburgh. He believes the phenomenon at Camp Nazareth was a continuation of another miracle. A year before, he had traveled here to Chicago to see this painting as it appeared to weep. He brought back some of the tears on a cotton ball and had anointed the campers icons with it. We don't have problems with miracles in the Orthodox Church. For us, the miraculous is involved with the so called ordinary events of life. In fact, reports of weeping icons go back thousands of years in the Greek church. The Orthodox believe these paintings are windows through which the faithful can gaze into heaven.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370#t=2773.76,2906.06"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136025/file/252370/transcript/70811/annotation/25","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And sometimes, they say, the devoted are rewarded with the sign like the tears. And we understand that there is a lot of skepticism, and rightfully so. It's a rather unusual, if not incredible, event. And I wouldn't expect anybody to buy this sight unseen. Skeptics claim, correctly, that the weeping effect can be chemically created. For instance, undetectable salt crystals would draw humidity from the air, and when saturated, we put the water back out. Doubters also point out that the Greek church won't allow the icons to be examined scientifically, claiming faith need not be challenged. No, I have no problem with people not believing. I mean, I feel bad for them because, you know, everybody is saying we need something believing. Well, here it is. George is 22, a student at the University of Pittsburgh. This past July, George witnessed something that would change him. He noticed a commotion in one of the cabins and went in to see what was up. As soon as you walked into the door of the cabin. There was. This feeling is peaceful feeling. And then there was this, the smell of like, I can't even explain the smell the best. What I was expecting was sort of like fresh roses. As George entered the room, he saw several people praying before a picture of the Virgin Mary. And this icon, this this piece of paper, it's always a piece of paper. There wasn't a fine. Was was weeping. Actual tears was coming down the icon. They moved the vigil into the chapel where Father John began to anoint other campers icons with the tears from the weeping one. He escaped his brush with the Great Wide with a compound leg fracture and 21 stitches. The shark also left a few teeth marks on Wyndham's surfboard. Remember now it took his leg and board all in one bite. Oceanographer Bruce Mate from the Marine Science Center in Newport estimates that the shark was over 14ft long. Animals as short as 16ft have had 12 foot elephant seals inside of them in just four bites. That's about an 800 pound diet taken in one feeding. So these animals aren't to be underestimated.
