We'll have live team coverage as Maryland tries to melt the ice away. Hi, I'm Sally Thornton. This is Eyewitness News at five. I'm Bob Turk. We have a winter storm warning in effect for snow, sleet and more of the ice for tonight and tomorrow. Hi, this is John Beer, and I'll have the Tonya Harding update for today and the details on the latest Rush Limbaugh controversy. And here's a look at what else is coming up next on Eyewitness News. At five, a pitbull kills a one year old Baltimore child. And she was saying, my baby, my baby's dead. Beavis and Butthead is being blamed for giving a teenager a deadly idea. A ski jumper carrying the torch for the Winter Olympics takes a nasty fall football in Baltimore. The mayor says yes, but we're going to have football back in the city next week. And what parents should know about child care in Maryland. You're watching Jay-Z TV in real time. Closed captioning for the hearing impaired. This is eyewitness news at five with sally Thornton. John Burin. Bob Turk. And Sandra Piggy. The ice just won't let up. Good evening, everybody. Just when you were starting to cut through it, more is on the way. And it's putting the state and municipalities in a crunch, working overtime to clear the roads with a diminishing supply of salt. We begin our team coverage with Melissa Sander live in Broken Vale. Melissa. Well, yes, we're here at the state salt barn where there's no activity right now, but you better believe they're going to be busy later on. And we will tell you later on just how the state is doing, what kind of condition they are in.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921#t=0.33,103.94"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921/transcript/71113/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I can tell you that the counties are in pretty bad shape. Howard County and Carroll County, I spoke to Department of Highways there and they've just never recovered their salt supplies ever since the big snowstorm Christmas weekend. But we're hearing from Harford County and also Baltimore City that they've got adequate supplies enough to last through this weekend. Now, this afternoon, my photographer and I tagged along with a Baltimore County crew highway crew tackling those really nasty side streets. You know how difficult those are. And they are asking for a little bit of your cooperation and understanding. It's real frustrating for everybody, both the public and us, to have to try to remove this stuff. Like his coworkers, Bert Honig is on duty for an undetermined shift as long as he's needed. Judging by the weather report, it could be days. We're trying to stay on top of it a little bit. And by throwing this flag down, you're giving the people a lot of traction on the road. And it's a quick fix. That's what it really is. Stuff have been really hard on. Our equipment is ice. It's been rock. We have a lot of equipment. It's down, you know, things that our work force and people make it even more difficult how they try to go around you and you they come right up on your rear end. You can't see them in the back. You have to stop to raise your body to get salt into the auger. And you don't even realize they're right behind you. Take your time. They ask and try to avoid parking your car on the street to leave more room for salt trucks to get around until they do. This lady discovered it's easier to get around sitting than standing, and these people found it's easier to do it on skates With a three rink in front of their homes in northeast Baltimore, they actually hope the salt trucks don't come near.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921#t=104.24,207.33"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921/transcript/71113/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay. But the rest of us do hope the salt trucks come here. I've got Liz Kalinowski with me with the State Highway Administration. What are you folks prepared to do tonight? Well, Melissa, we sent the drivers home to get some rest. The first they've had in a long time. This area here will be bustling with activity later tonight. If we do get that precipitation that is called for. I do want to let everyone know, we've been saying for a while, our salt supplies are dwindling. They are quite low, worried about below 10% of our capacity. So we are very concerned about that. We'll be mixing with abrasives, which you see behind us here, a huge pile of those. And we want to let our customers know. We've certainly been committed to keeping a level of excellence on the highway system. We're going to be limited in the near future based on these low supplies. I heard you even got some from Harford County just the other day that they gave 6000 tons I heard forked over to the State Highway administration up in Harper County. I don't have personal knowledge of that, but I know that we often work cooperatively with the counties all around the state from time to time. So that could very well be. Is it even worth putting it down tonight considering that we're just going to get smashed with a lot more of it in just one light later. From a personal safety standpoint, anything you put on the highways by way of salt or abrasives when you've got traffic out there really is necessary by way of helping traction. Well, I'm almost afraid to ask, but what does Mother Nature have in store for us next? Let's go, Bob Turk. All right. We have tracking a pretty major wet system down or south already. Precipitation up. Virginia extends well back to the south and southwest. It will be moving into the Baltimore Washington metro areas, I'd say Baltimore, maybe around 10:00 tonight. We'll start seeing some snow. The snow will pick up in intensity. It looks like we'll see a lot of snow out of this system. And then tomorrow, as all this moisture heads up from the south with a lot more warm air aloft, we'll probably see a changeover to some sleet and freezing rain. We could see as much as 4 to 6in of snow before a changeover. If we don't see the changeover, maybe as much as 8 to 12in of snow. So snow is actually easy to deal with. And the ice we've seen, you know, usually we experience 1 or 2 ice storms in an average winter, but this is not an average winter team coverage. Reporter Alex Imaging says it may remain misery on average for some time to come. This is the only sure way to warm weather. That was my 25th year here at BWI Airport for the Weather Service. And I've never seen a year like this to compare with the number of ice storm cold air damming. Sounds like something a lot of us have been doing lately. But cold air damming is how the Weather Service describes the conditions that have been setting us up for one ice storm after another and the cold air gets trapped between the mountains and the coast and the warmer air rides up over the colder air at the surface and the precipitation, instead of falling as snow falls, as freezing rain or sleet. And that leaves those of us stuck in the cold air damp to deal with ice ice storms since New Year's and more on the way. Unless weather patterns change and push cold air north and temperatures up and the long range forecast, 30 day outlook, I believe, is calling for slightly below normal temperatures and precipitation. Small wonder the airport is full of paying customers heading south. I'm out of here. Alex DiPietro, Channel 13, Eyewitness News. The boy says he got the idea from watching an episode of Quantum Leap. This is one day after the TV show Beavis and Butt-Head is blamed for the death of an infant. Later in the NewsHour, Kelly Saunders will see whether you think violence on TV has gone too far. Far. And as we were just saying. Denise Coke is in the booth 13 working on that story for 6:00. Denise Mosley, the woman you see on the screen behind me, his name is Cynthia Addison. She's quite an extraordinary woman. It was less than ten months ago that she was asleep in her East Baltimore rowhouse and she awoke to fire. She managed to escape with five other of her children, but five of her very small daughters were trapped inside and were killed by that fire. Tonight, and where the story goes, we see how that family is managing through prayers and through faith to go on and also how strong she is. She's actually now doing a public service announcements with the fire department to tell other people that it's so important to have a smoke detector in your house. Tonya contends that the organization has no right to hold a hearing and possibly prevent her from achieving her 20 year old dream of an Olympic gold medal. And besides, Tonya says she can't afford to pay all those attorneys and witnesses to come all the way over to Norway to present their testimony under the true spirit of Olympic competition. Once a person is treated, they never get ulcers again. The bacteria can be detected through a very simple blood test. How many people have have peptic ulcers? I was surprised to learn that about 25 million Americans will suffer from peptic ulcers sometime in their lives. 25 million. And they're not stress related. And they're not many of them. And Jim Spiro says, you know, holds the local CFL rights to this area and is trying to get a CFL team to play over Memorial Stadium. Possibly named the Colts. And perhaps you heard that the deadline of the 14th and 15th of the month, the 14th for the NFL's the 15th for the CFL. There was talk yesterday about that being moved back. Mother magazine, our state ranks among the top ten when it comes to taking care of our children. Yeah, the magazine working mother has once again ranked Maryland among the best in the country. Why do you think it is that a lot of other governors don't get it? I don't understand. I think they're shortsighted. They don't understand the workforce of today. They don't understand families today. And, you know, I commend Maryland. They see it as a good business decision as well as wonderful for families to have good childcare. All right. So Maryland does well in child care. Tell me who's on the bottom of your list. Who's who's really bad at this? Well, I think Idaho is way down there. A Baltimore mother witnessed a horror and tonight she's in mourning for her one year old son. As Jackson reports, the mother says she and her son were visiting friends when a pitbull attacked the child. His name is Rampage, a two year old pit bull. Last night, the dog attacked and killed one year old Tevin Williams of Baltimore. It happened while the child and his mother, Shanita Matthews, were visiting a friend at this apartment complex. I was upstairs watching TV and I heard first I heard a child screaming and crying. And then approximately a minute after that, I heard an adult screaming and she was saying, My baby, my baby's dead. Animal control officers were called in. Seize the dog. Apparently the child had wandered into the room where the dog was tied and without warning, it attacked. My understanding is that once the adults that were around discovered that the dog had the child, they stabbed it several times trying to free the child from the animal with little success. Those we talked with in this apartment complex say they've had very little, if any, contact with this dog named Rampage. One resident told us the dog nearly attacked his son. My son was out back playing and the dog just ran up and he started barking before he attacked him. So my stepfather got to grab them. And then those with animal control say the reputation of pit bulls is worse than the dogs. However, rampage will be destroyed. It's not a pet. It. It's training wherever it got. It is vicious and malicious. And we've lost the life of a human being.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921#t=1298.43,1423.89"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921/transcript/71113/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And in my opinion, the dog will be euthanized. Well, Sally, experts have always noticed the link between cigarets and broken bones, but they never knew why. Well, now they seem to know why. New research shows smoking robs the bones of their mineral density, making them more likely to fracture, especially in women. Other studies have found similar links between smoking and fractures in men, but brittle bones. The condition, also known as osteoporosis, are a much greater health hazard for women. The researchers think smoking interferes with the body's production of estrogen. Also on Health Watch, you often hear that it's hard for men to talk about their feelings. Well, that's not the case for a group called us, too, at BMC. Us, too, is a support group for men with prostate cancer. It allows them to talk about their experiences and to help one another. One member of the group, Frank Winn, says he joined because of his own reaction when he found out that he had breast cancer. This is what he said. I went blank. It was just like hitting me over the head with a sledgehammer. Then asked me, did I have any questions? I didn't know anybody to talk to. I didn't know anybody who had prostate cancer. And I just made my mind up that when I formed a support group. Yes. And I asked you when we did our call out last month when you were going to be coming down to visit us and you said it was too cold here and it was too cold, but I figured I had to find winter. So I wanted to come down to Baltimore anyway because now it's colder and things are even out, that's for sure. It's becoming more normal. Let's take a let's go to our region right now. Temperature wise and radar wise, we have some precipitation headed our way. It's in the form of snow down or south. It will be expanding and moving to the north over the next several hours. We expect some snow in here probably around 10:00 earlier as we head further south. This looks like a more snow event for us, at least in the beginning and through much of the day tomorrow, we should see some pretty moderate to heavy snow before we see a changeover. Temperatures around the region, 19 in downtown Baltimore, most places very cold this afternoon, certainly cold enough to supply snow at all levels for the time being. 20 in Salisbury, 22 in Ocean City and the extreme southern portions of our region, you're going to see a change over to sleet and freezing rain sooner than here in the Baltimore, in fact, north and west of Baltimore. That changeover may take quite some time. It may not change over. And that's why we expect some pretty moderate to heavy snow to accumulate across the region tomorrow. 22, 15 today, normal, 40, normal, 40 to 25. That's probably normal for June in Anchorage. Northeast winds, 15 to 25 in the bay, 4 to 10 with your mind, 33 degrees. Area of low pressure sitting right over portions of Mississippi. This one's not going to move to the west. It's going to move to the southeast of our region in this location. It puts us in a pretty good shot for snow. All this precipitation and moving into this colder air mass, bringing moisture in off the ocean. There will probably be a change over during the afternoon because this storm is going to have some strength where it's going to suck up a lot of warm, moist air. Temperatures in the 80s along the Gulf Coast. When I put all that on top of some cold air. You've got a terrific formula for snow and some heavy snow definitely on tap for the Baltimore region, especially from city, north and west late tonight and during the day tomorrow. High pressure with cold air behind it. Looks like you can stay with us for a while. We might get a slight break, I think Saturday afternoon, temperatures may get above freezing. You see all this gobs of moisture coming up from the south. That's the low pressure we going to have to watch as it moves to the east northeast, bringing that precipitation with it into a cold air mass. Going to be like a coastal storm for the west. Another weak low. This one, instead of moving down in the slot. Looks like it's going to head toward the Great Lakes. That's why we're not expecting that snow for Sunday like we thought. Temperatures staying basically in the mid to lower to mid 20s. We have 24 degrees for York, 28. Looks like it's going to warm up a little bit in Columbia. A former motel surrounded by a high fence topped by barbed wire is not the setting you would expect for a museum. But perhaps the setting is ideal because within is the super secret National Security Agency's cryptologic museum. Scores of clearly explained displays cataloged the history of code making and code breaking cryptography through the ages, from flames and flags to cipher machines. Perhaps the most unusual code system was used by the U.S. Marines in World War Two. It was called Navajo Code Talk. Our team coverage begins tonight with a live report from Melissa Santer, who says the U.S. air policies are scrambling to battle more ice with less salt Melissa. And so is the state one of the state's top arms? It's here in Brooklyn ville. And you can see behind me a very large amount of salt. But take my word for it, this is a lot less than the state should have and actually needs for this weekend. And the same goes for a lot of counties all around the state. Carroll County, Howard County, they're working hand-to-mouth. They get it, they spread it, and they will run out of salt if they don't get more supplies, more deliveries this weekend. So it's just tough for these counties to keep the roads passable. We caught up with the Baltimore County crew working very hard, especially on the side streets, which, you know, are tough. It means having to work around the clock. I guess, about a little over 24 hours. I'm not real sure. Lost track of time yesterday. So today was Wednesday, but it's really Thursday. So if you think your street's not getting cleared soon enough. Get used to it. Because you can see it's so tight on these side streets and you just can't make any time. It's hard to get ahead of it. In Baltimore County, they spread swag for traction, a quick fix throughout the state, especially in the western end, salt supplies are perilously low, creating concern help main roads will stay drivable, much less the side streets. And with the temperatures getting real cold like we've been having, you start to have breakdowns, you start to have your slag and your salt can freeze up in your all gearbox and it just just ends up taking a little bit longer than people realize.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921#t=3733.94,3827.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921/transcript/71113/annotation/38","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Kids take advantage of the ice during this northeast Baltimore street into a free skating rink, but it's a pain literally for the rest of us that's getting worse. So shoppers are turning to cat litter and it helps better that found and Iraq. So they've got to rub salt and stuff you floor is up and cat litter does and how it couldn't get no salt so this is what I to get. Meanwhile we wait for a thaw which is what crews need to pull this away. And until then they ask for your cooperation. Some people wave. It makes you feel good. Other people shake their fist at your or give you a dirty look. It's pretty hard to know. It's hard for anybody to work when they're mad and a lot of these things. And we're here to make you mad. People don't want to work with us at all. Well, working with them means this is what the crews say. Try not to park your car in the street. We're about just below 10% of our normal levels. Give you a perspective of how much salt is necessary because of all the ice storms we've had for the blizzard last year, the entire blizzard, we spread about 40,000 tons of salt on one day alone of an ice storm, we could spread 20,000 tons. So that really gives you an idea of the kind of impact that ice storms have had on the area. Well, what that means is for snow, the plows can clear a lot of that away. But with these ice storms, you've got to treat it. There's no other way. And we're going to be mixing with abrasives, sand, some cinders, some crushed stone, things like that. But you don't know if you're really going to be able to clear these roads to have impassable this weekend. We're going to certainly give it our best shot again to try to continue that excellence of service. But folks do need to know that we are limited in our salt supplies and that when we say don't drive unless you have to, we seriously mean it. Okay, that might be the case. I also spoke to Dr. Smith, who for the first time admitted that he may have accidentally swept the surgical clamp into her abdomen. But he also said he was a victim. Here's what Linda Hanks had to say just a few moments ago. Where do you go from this point? I know that Mr. Allen is going to. Ask for a new one and new trial. But I'm just going to try to pick up the pieces and go forward from now on. You know, just try to go. Go ahead with my life. And, of course, her attorney has indicated that he was not happy he will again, was asking for $1 million in damages. The jury did not buy that. But in his commentary tonight, Michael Lasker wonders, Is the governor calling the same signals as some other players? There's a lot of different groups working on a lot of different deals, and I hope they're all on the same page here. While Governor Schaefer says he's had talks with Al Davis of the L.A. Raiders, Mayor Schmoke has been talking with Jim Sparrows of the Canadian Football League. The governor says forget that February 14th deadline we talked about. We've got a chance for an NFL team. But the mayor seems to have a different game plan unless he hears of a firm NFL deal. He says he's ready to sign on Monday for Canadian Football Memorial Stadium. Keep in mind, while this is going on, Jack Kent Cook still wants to move his Redskins to Laurel and a Poland wants to move his bullets and capitals, maybe to Baltimore. So what we have is a kind of organized chaos. Will the prospect of Canadian ball scare off Al Davis? Will Davis scare off Jack Kent Cook? Will all of them scare off a Poland? We don't know. It really is. But it's try to give you an answer. One of the biggest factors that may have an effect on weather is human activity in the last couple of hundred years. It may have caused the earth's temperature rise a little bit. This is called the greenhouse effect. Basically, the pollution that results from things like manufacturing plants, automobiles and everyday activity add gases to the atmosphere that could result in an absorption of heat warming, the earth and perhaps changing climate over time.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921#t=5038.92,5151.78"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136337/file/252921/transcript/71113/annotation/51","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But we don't have enough information of data. Some of it certainly not raised enough right now because we got cold temperatures and snow headed our way from Virginia, just south of D.C. Now, it's probably about five, 4 or 5 hours away from the Baltimore area. It's moving in our general direction. The more warm air that comes in off the Atlantic Ocean, it'll cut down our snow accumulations. Even in this new home, there are reminders everywhere. And that is good. And that can be hard. There were times after this happened that I just wasn't that good. And my wife was there. She was she was pretty strong individual, so strong she was able to participate in this public service announcement for the fire department, warning everyone to get a smoke detector. I realize that if we do have a smoke detector, that. I. But each night there are other lessons taught in the Addison's church and they restore and help them go on. I wouldn't allow myself to ask why I couldn't bring myself to do that. Why wouldn't change anything. It happened. And I know that it happened for a reason and it cannot be changed. So then I have to ask the Lord to give me strength to accept what have already happened. Somehow he clearly seems to be finding the strength. Initially, they thought and we reported that the fire was caused when one of the young boys was trying to light the furnace in the basement, which of course, would make you feel pretty bad. But later they found out that they're almost 90% sure that it was electrical, that it was not caused by the furnace at all. And it was one of those accidental things that happened. But a smoke detector might have might have saved some lives. Who we saw Michelle and the fact that, you know, she misses her sisters, as you would expect. But what about the Michelle? What about the rest of the family? Anybody receiving counseling to get through this? Well, I asked the addresses that because, you know, it's just incomprehensible how you overcome something like that. But really, the church serves for them in that way. And he said no, that he's talked with the children, that they're a very open family and that they get all the strength they need from the church. But I think this is going to surprise a lot of people. 800 telephone service, of course, has been around for a very long time. It's a way to reach your long distance party for free. Or is it if you're talking to Monty Hall, you know the deal. You'll pay for a 900 call, but an 800 call is toll free. No charge at all for the call. So how then did Tony Robey end up with a $10 charge to begin with? She says no one in her family made the call. But aside from that, how could there be any charge for an 800 call? I found a real nice lady at the telephone company. She said, as far as we know, they cannot charge you for any 800 number. It is a toll free service number. The statement from interactive billing, which sent the charge contained Robeson's phone number and the bogus credit card number it says the caller gave, but it wasn't charged to her phone bill or to her credit card, but mailed to her home address. Well, how did they ever get that information? The answer is that c m p belittling it gave it to them for a fee. They've been surviving many, many years without doing this. And they profited all these years. Interactive's bill was full of warnings. Sarajevo got through more than 12 hours without the terror that heavy shelling creates. There were several shells just before our broadcast tonight, but our bureau there tells us it really was an unusual day. Our correspondent there was Tony Birtley, dodging sniper bullets in downtown Sarajevo. But by midday, the skies were silent of gunfire as the UN moved in to occupy Serb held positions in the city. The latest and perhaps most important, cease fire came into effect. Initially, it looked to be holding. Slowly they inched into the suburb of Good above. It's down a stretch of no man's land where no one has crossed in 22 months. Two years ago on this bridge, the Bosnian staged peace demonstrations against war. They didn't work. But now the U.N. is making its first tentative steps in a process to try and stop the carnage. Bosnian soldiers emerged from battered buildings to watch the deployment. Maybe this is the first time that somebody stands between us. Maybe this is great peace or something like that. The U.N. didn't take chances. The devastated area has been the scene of some of the war's heaviest fighting. Tanks stood by to cover a French battalion.
