Wild winter weather continues to keep folks around the country from getting home. At BWI today, folks are still waiting for flights canceled or postponed. The severe weather in the Midwest and Northeast is causing major cancellations with the third night. Weary travelers were forced to make video of the wide terminal benches their bedrooms. I went to check my luggage and he said, Ma'am, your flights been canceled. Ooh. Third day in a row. I waited for hours and hours flying back first place to Houston or L.A. and they gave me $500 toward the flight. So those people are a couple of days late for work now, and it's not easy explaining to your boss why you're taking two days off at the end of a long holiday weekend. For some, it's not hard to make the best of a bad situation, though. The Defiance Ohio High School band marched in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year's Day, and they haven't gotten home yet. The weather has kept them stranded at a Los Angeles hotel, but they, unlike most travelers, are in no hurry to get back to real life. I thought I'd be home on time, but the delay is very nice. My own bed and my own bathroom sound really, really nice right now. But with the weather being how it is back in the Midwest, I'm not really looking forward to that because the sun, I've gotten used to it. The city's airport is shut down and even driving has been banned in Buffalo. This just adds to the problems already caused by the Midwest blizzard. The planes grounded in Buffalo only worsened the plane shortage for flights around the country. And this next story may be hard to believe, especially with the weather we're dealing with right now. But the Cornell University Regional Climate Center is reporting 1998 was the warmest year on record in the Northeast. One day before Congress reconvenes, senators search for a deal that would avert a full scale impeachment trial of President Clinton. We have reports from Cheryl Atkinson on Capitol Hill and Bill Plante at the White House. Congress returns tomorrow with a full plate in the House, a new speaker, and a new agenda in the Senate. The daunting task of the impeachment trial of the president of the United States. A plan floated last week for a Shorten Senate trial that would only take about a week or two with no witnesses being called now appears in doubt. It would have called for senators to hear evidence and then conduct a sort of test vote if a two thirds majority did not feel the president committed impeachable offenses, then the trial would be over. Republicans have not been able to find agreement among themselves, let alone among Democrats, on whether to proceed with such a fast track trial. Sharyl Attkisson, CBS News, Capitol Hill. This is Bill Plante at the White House. The president's defenders are still hoping for a censure deal which will forestall or cut short an impeachment trial. But if that doesn't happen, they are prepared to go to trial as early as next week. The White House Project, a nonpartisan political group which monitors women in politics, recently conducted a poll that found 76% of Americans said they are ready to elect a woman but haven't had an opportunity to do so. This is climate change. This is a signal right now that people are interested in a new kind of politics, new faces in politicians with a resumé that includes labor secretary under President Bush and Transportation secretary under President Reagan. Political analysts are already buzzing about a possible Dole candidacy. Should be the only woman running for the nomination, probably up against 5 or 6 middle aged white guys. So the position is good. So the question now is, can Mrs. Dole raise the money and excitement needed to become the first woman president of the United States? Well, at least her bumper stickers are already out. In this morning's medical report, the cold weather gripping a lot of the country has raised concern about the risk of frostbite. Our Dr. Emily Snow is here now with tips on preventing it and what to do if or when you might get it. Good morning. Good morning, Heidi. Well, frostbite is when the skin, even the tissue and bone beneath it freeze. The most susceptible body parts are the extremities, like fingers and toes. But your earlobes, cheeks and those or any exposed skin are also at high risk. Frostbite can take its toll in a matter of minutes if the temperature is cold enough. It can cause serious and permanent tissue damage and lead to amputation in severe case cases. Initial warning signs include a tingling, stinging or burning sensation, numbness. The skin eventually turns to a pale or blue color and starts to feel waxy and hardened. Now, any time the temperature or the wind chill is freezing or below, you could be at risk. I had no idea it could come on so quickly, very quickly, especially in kids. What should you do if you do get frostbitten? The first thing you should do is get out of the cold. But if you can't get out of the cold, you can rewarm cold hands with warm breath or put them under your armpits. If you have a child, you can put their hands under your armpits. If you can get indoors, you should get to an emergency room because that's the best place to treat frostbite. You should also immerse hands or any exposed body part that you think is frostbite in warm water.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136484/file/253067#t=1341.93,1426.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136484/file/253067/transcript/71190/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Not hot water, not cold water, warm water. And you shouldn't rub the area that actually can be counterproductive, make it worse depth, cause more tissue damage. So don't rub it in warm water. People think they should. Yeah, they think they should think right. What should you do to avoid getting frostbite in the first place? These are going to sound really simple, but here's a couple of tips people don't realize. Cover your ears and nose where mittens or gloves wear warm socks and boots and also be very conscious of how cold it is out. I think people get a sense of security. They go outside and before they know it, they have a frostbitten toe or hand. Even though the stereotype is you have to be a mountain climber or go to the Arctic to get this, you can get it here at home. Who is most at risk? Most at risk are the elderly and kids. Kids within 30s in the right temperature, if it's very cold, can be frostbite and that can affect their bone growth. So you have to be very careful with children and adults and older adults in very cold weather, especially what's going on right now. Serious stuff. Emily Snow, thank you. Okay. Take a look at this. Firefighters allowed us to light a Christmas tree. And as you can see, the tree becomes a ball of flames in just seconds. Twice this weekend, Christmas trees caught fire ruining homes and in one case, sending some people to the hospital. One of those fires was up at a home in Bel Air. The state bar marshal's office strongly urges us to remove our trees because they are much drier than in years past, thanks to this summer's drought. And the city of Baltimore is making it easier for us to get rid of our Christmas trees. From now till the end of the month, just put your tree out with your trash in the city. Or you can bring your tree to either Memorial Stadium or the parking lot at the bowl at the public western complex. It could bring rain and Falls Road this Saturday and Sunday from ten in the morning till four in the afternoon. Okay. 732. Speaking of faxes. Yeah. Now a product you probably think you don't. Me? Well, as Jeanne Moos reports, it may be the answer to a running problem many women face. They say two heads are better than one. But are three legs better than 2 to 3? Why would a pair of pantyhose have three different guys? Left, right, center. This is the spare leg. It's the same principle as the spare tire. But instead of a flap, it's a run women fear, especially when they don't have time to run out and get another pair. Which brings us to pair and a spare. It just seems so fitting. Talk about a pair. Creators Annette Pappas and Nita Vaccaro are two Louisiana women with absolutely no background in pantyhose except for wearing them. Yet they came up with this. What do you do with these things? You would choose any of the two legs and you would put them on just like you would a normal pair of pantyhose. You would tuck the spare in between your legs, folded in the flattest possible fashion and then tucked into the pocketed area. Most women we showed them to didn't immediately grasp the concept. Look at the little pockets. It might be like feel all bunched up. Not say, the inventors if you folded flat, it's really invisible. So how's it feel? It feels a little lumpy. You feel a little sluggish and decide what you need is something to give you a little boost, something like a vitamin. With all the options out there, it's no surprise people are confused. Do supplements make a difference or are they a waste of your hard earned money? Well, dietitians will tell you many people take the wrong kind or wrong amount of supplements. The only way to know for sure what you need or don't need is to talk with your doctor and base the answer on your age and your eating habits. Having said that, there are still some general guidelines that may help you. First, avoid chromium, colon, eight and blue green algae. Despite their claims, they have not been proven to reduce weight or offer any other kind of benefit. Don't take excessive amounts of water soluble vitamins like C and B because you'll excrete what you don't need. Time for a look at the latest national news. I'm Hattie Kaufman, reporting from CBS News headquarters in New York. It is ten minutes before the hour. Last night, the owners rejected the players final offer. Diana Olick joins us now with more. Good morning, Diana. Good morning, Heidi. It is now clearly up to the players to decide if there will or will not be at least part of a basketball season. Owners met late yesterday for a conference call and at the unanimous recommendation of the Labor Relations Committee, rejected the last offer on the table. The two sides have not been talking at all of late. And yesterday, basketball commissioner David Stern seemed to suggest there would be no more proposals. The offer by the union at this late date is so far from the NBA's final proposal that I found myself unable to find a basis for even suggesting that there was a gap to be bridged because the two parties are so far apart. Following the decision, the players union reacted immediately, still arguing for their proposal. This deal is not going to affect Patrick Ewing or Michael Jordan. We're not fighting for ourselves. Ron Matt is live in East Baltimore at the Department of Social Services now. Ron. Hi, Kelly. It's a most unusual case. All efforts by the folks here at Social Services to identify and locate the parents or relatives of little Travis have been unsuccessful. Take a look at this beautiful child now about seven months old. Travis was only a month old when he was left with a woman named Joanne right on West Baltimore Street. According to Ms.. Right, the mother left the child with her. After three days, the mother did not return. Miss Right brought Travis to the city's Department of Social Services. Social Services obtained an order of shelter care and placed the baby in a foster care home. Just a little while ago, foster father Alan bought the good. The Travis is a loving and healthy child. And it looks like the winds have somewhat diminished in the area. It's just honestly cold. I mean, look, any time you're at 24 degrees, you're looking for an overnight low at ten.
