This is Eyewitness News. With Denise Coke. Vic Carter weather with Bob Turner. Sports with John Merrow. What a way to start the baseball season. For the first time in more than two decades, the Orioles home opener is a washout. Today's constant downpour forces baseball fans to put their excitement on hold for 24 hours. And that includes everyone from the ticket holder to the president of these United States. Deborah Stone is live at Camden Yards now with more on this disappointing day. Deb? Denise, what a letdown. We have all been looking forward to opening day with such anticipation. Just when we thought spring was finally here and the boys of summer could take the field, what felt like a cold winter rain came and washed our hopes away. The road signs said plan ahead. But nothing could have prepared baseball fans for such a rainy and miserable opening day. For a while this morning, workers at the ballpark proceeded with final preparations in hopes that the weather would cooperate. There was cleaning to do food to cook and, of course, balloons to inflate. Happy fans waited anxiously for the gates to open. This morning we woke up like 4:00 and went down to the end of the warehouse trying to get tickets. She only had like nine tickets and we got the first two. But such efforts were all for naught. The Orioles postponed the game once. The Baltimore Orioles. Yes, it has. Yeah. Well, word travels fast, but not everyone heard the news. I had a meeting at work until about 1230, and I changed my game right over at the stadium, so I didn't know there was a postponement. You. You're all set for baseball, and look what happened.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136707/file/253413#t=0.76,106.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136707/file/253413/transcript/71560/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Crushed. We can give you all the information that you need about what to do with your tickets. If you had tickets for today's game, you can use them for tomorrow's game or at any of the remaining games against Kansas City this season or any of these eight official exchange dates. The game against Boston, April 16th against New York. April 30th against Texas. June 18th. Toronto. July 16th. Minnesota. July 24th. Milwaukee. August 12th or 14th. Or the game against Chicago on September 11th. But make sure make your exchanges soon, because seats are going fast, Denise. Well, for the few, we're lucky enough to have. What about parking passes? Parking passes for today's game can be used for tomorrow's game only. That's it. All right. So you're out of luck. Okay. Thank you, Deb reporting live from Camden Yards. The rain also forced the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians to cancel their opening games in Cincinnati. The home opener began, but then had to be stopped because of a dramatic development. Sports director John Duran is joining us now with the story. I sort of talked about this a little bit at five, but since we never seem to be shy about repeating things around here, I'll say it again. I submit a guy 330 pounds, you know, probably should have had a second look from from a physician. But that didn't happen. And what did happen today was an absolutely horrific situation in Cincinnati this afternoon. Reds and the Expos played baseball at Riverfront Stadium. Third batter of the game was at the plate. Rondell White and umpire John McSherry waiting for the second base umpire, Steve Ripley, to come in and take his place. At that point, make sure he started to walk toward the visitors dugout, did not make it, collapsed on the warning track, was not conscious when the paramedic personnel there at the stadium got to him. They took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead 55 minutes later. Exact cause of death not known at this early on, but everyone is presuming that it was a a significant coronary event. And in the sickest of ironies, McSherry had planned to see a physician tomorrow. We just learned that within the last few minutes, he had been experiencing, by his own account, some irregular heartbeat and wanted to get checked up. In other baseball news this evening, the Minnesota Twins are facing their home opener today without slugger Kirby Puckett, but he'll be back on the field in a few weeks. Puckett was suffering from blurry vision last week and sought help from the experts at Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. Doctors there say the problem is a partially blocked artery in his right eye, which can be treated. Puckett will be on the Twins disabled list until April the 12th. The driver of the Nissan, 45 year old Ronald Turley, died shortly after the accident. His mother said he had finished doing janitorial work at a vet's office and was headed to his second cleaning job. After the accident, some students ran out of the busses, emergency door and on home or to school. 14 were transported by ambulance. That we will be able to be dry tomorrow. Well, the rain is not a problem for tomorrow. And there's really no chance at all of precipitation. But the wind is going to make it kind of chilly. So, I mean, the advice you've been giving throughout this afternoon is dress warmly. Of course, since we're going to be there, we should take that advice and wear a hat. Do I have to? Well, unless you want your hair blowing around. Well, what you're saying. Well, I know somebody is going to have to be perfect for you. We'll talk about it. Okay. Well, let me talk temperatures right now, because that will be the thing we're dealing with tomorrow. Right now, we've got temperature 47 degrees here on TV Hill and around the region, 38 degrees. Temperatures having dropped below 40 up to the north and out in the mountains, 35 degrees in Cumberland. And there may be a little wet snow mixed in with what lingers from the showers as you go well out into the higher elevations. We ended up getting about 6/10 of an inch of rain at BWI as our last report. We did have as much as two inches of rain reported over on the eastern shore at Dover and over an inch of rain down at Dulles. So rather mixed bag, say an inch to an inch and a half of rainfall in a typical lot of this storm system. Here's the radar showing where the bulk of the rain did fall. A couple to three inches of rain in this area up north of Philadelphia. But it's a good soaking rain, but it is ending now. You see the breaking of the echoes down here will be tapering off to drizzle during the rest of the overnight period. And as I indicated before, I do think we will see the sun shine through the clouds by the time we get to wake up and drive time tomorrow. Here's the storm system working its way off the coast. You can see the circulation center moving pretty much directly across us, as a matter of fact. And it's just moving out of the area now. It's all rain right now, although on the backside of this, seven inches of snow showed up early this morning in Cleveland. So that's what took care of their opening day. So our opening day only rained. At least we didn't have the snow. Thunderstorms down to the south here. All of this is moving offshore now behind the system, cooler air moving in. In fact, there's some real Frigidaire locked up in Canada right now. And it's looking like as we go beyond the five day forecast, like Easter weekend, it's going to be a rather chilly affair as that frigid air makes its way down into this region. It does look like tomorrow, though, we'll be one with some sunshine mid 50, still below normal, but an improvement over today, getting close to 60 on the lower eastern shore out in the mountains only the upper 40s and again factor in some wind. So it's not going to be all that warm outside. And here talking about the wind on the bay, 15 to 30 knot winds north and northwest direction, 2 to 4 foot drop in the bay. Water temperature this afternoon was 44 degrees for the rest of the overnight period. Ray will be tapering off to drizzle. It's a kind of chilly, damp night. Winds will be picking up 38 degrees here overnight low and for tomorrow. Then a mixture of clouds and sunshine, partly to mostly cloudy, partly in the morning, mostly as the day wears along. And then windy, 56 degrees our high tomorrow. Nicest day of the five day period. Ought to be Wednesday when we get up to 62 degrees. Then a little bit of chillier air coming back in with some showers Thursday and Friday as we get into the weekend. It does look like it's going to be a chilly Easter weekend.
