Prince, the musical wizard known for his notorious and bizarre antics on stage and for his outrageous attire. Today's City Line is a salute to Prince with Prince video, prince lookalikes and a rare prince footage. And we'll talk with Cynthia Horner, the editor of Ride on magazine, one of the few people to ever interview Prince. It's coming up next live on City Line. I'm. I won't deal. I want. You tell? That is the topic of our salute today. For almost an hour. For almost an hour. Afternoon. And welcome to City Line and our special salute to friends. With us today is someone who has a particularly close insight is Miss Cynthia Horner, editor in chief of Right on magazine. Hello. Welcome. Cynthia, I agree. I believe one of the last people to interview Prince, uh, to get a personal interview of Prince. Also one of the first and one of the first. But that's still been some time. Yes. Tell us about Prince. What is Prince like? Well, it's very hard to say because he's so different. Every time I see him, he's completely different from the last time. But what I will say is that when I met him, he seemed to be a very shy, extremely withdrawn person, very, very talented.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=35.47,281.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I met him a very unusual way. He used to read right on magazine, along with all the other teenagers. And what happened was when he got a recording contract with Warner Brothers, he had his manager call and invite me down to the studio. And of course, I didn't know who he was or anything, but he had sent a photo to me in the mail and he thought that maybe this photo would attract my interest because he looked like some of the other celebrities we were using. So I went down to the recording studio and he impressed me by playing about ten or 15 different instruments. And, you know, after that, our friendship just sort of formed and I find him to still be basically the same way as far as being very withdrawn. He's very open on stage, but in private, he's very, very quiet, very moody, very sensitive. That's really, really one of those instances where the well, what we see as an audience or as as a fan of Prince is very different from the private prince. Yes. But I'll tell you, if anyone really wants to know what Prince is like, all we have to do is go see Purple Rain and most of his characteristics are portrayed on screen. So that's one way of really getting to know him. In fact, that's partly why he made the movie, because he knew that there were so many misconceptions about him that he thought that if he did do something on film, it would bring people closer to him. Tell me, what are those misconceptions that we have? Well, one of the misconceptions that I think that people have is that he's gay. Number one is not gay. No, he is not bisexual.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=282.29,376.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I don't believe that he is. I think that what what happens is when you're an entertainer, you pick up certain characteristics which the mass public would normally associate with with gays. And it's not really that. It's just part of an act. And I find that to be a misconception what others are there. I would say that he is a very jealous individual. That kind of myth has gotten started because of the fact that various people who were associated with him in some shape or fashion have since left him. And it appeared to these individuals that he harbored some jealousy or ill feelings. And that isn't really true. He knows that people have to grow just like he is grown, and he's not going to try to hang on to somebody who feels that their talents may lie in some other area. We're going to take a break, but let me first tell you that we've got some very exciting things happening today. We've got a prince look alike contest that we're going to invite our audience at home to call in and tell us who you think looks most like Prince. We've also got some very rare concert footage of Brant from the 1999 concert that we'll be showing you a little bit later on. So please stay with us. We'll be back in just a few minutes. And don't forget to call in if you want to ask a question. It's exceptionally small. Home and family for just six eight. So to reach out to the wife itself and the three. Only 688. It. The French. This will be to the winner and that will be coming up a little bit later on in the show. You know, interestingly enough, that trophy still has some purple in there, just like the purple rain and the purple grays and so forth. And the people in our audience have on purple. How. Cynthia, we're going to continue now our conversation with Cynthia Horner of Right on magazine. What how do you explain this prince phenomenon, this this, this enticement of purple and the excitement about it in him and so forth? Well, I think that the phenomenon stems from a need of the people. He's here at the right. He's in the right place at the right time, just like Michael Jackson was in the right place at the right time when Thriller first came out. And I think that these days, people want somebody that they can look up to. It's been a long time since there's been a specific individual that you could gravitate to. There have been white performers such as Elvis Presley, who have captured the hearts of the masses. But for black performers, it has not been as easy because there has not been enough visibility, exposure or record sales and TV appearances.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=1193.13,1302.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Is the Color Purple itself something have a special significance to Prince? I don't even know what they all are. I know that he of course, he plays the guitar. He plays synthesizers. He can play drums. But some of the other instruments, he can even play the flute, in fact. But some of the instruments he can play are instruments that I'm not personally familiar with because I'm not a musician. We're talking with Sophia Horner from right on magazine. Cynthia, this mystique, this ability to capture the hearts and desires of people of all ages, it doesn't happen that often. What is it about Prince that makes him so special? I mean, okay, he's talented. He does a lot of different things. But what makes Prince the one that people just go crazy about? Well, first of all, he's really adorable.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=1549.24,1692.76"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He's a very young he's a very young guy. And he just has the magnetism. He has a lot of sex appeal. He always has had it. It's just that over the years, it's it's just transformed into more and more things. Okay. Okay. Let's take a question from the audience. Hi. Hi. I just wanted to say that I really like right on magazine. I've read it for a lot of years. I'm 19. I'm embarrassed to say that, but I still read it. I wanted to ask you, did you get any kind of, I don't know, reason for why he's such a loner? I mean, my idea is that it makes him that much more exciting because nobody knows exactly what Prince is thinking or what he's doing at any moment. But did he give you any indication what is going on in his head? Well, first of all, he's had a very strange childhood. It hasn't been that happy. So therefore, he never really had a lot of friends, just mainly people connected with the music industry in some way. They weren't necessarily famous people, but people were in groups. But you're partially right, too, because it does make him more interesting to keep his mystique. If people knew everything about him, they probably wouldn't like him quite as well. Thank you very much for requesting to this this you know, we talk about Prince's mystique. The other side of the coin is his talent. He is involved with other performers. He has introduced us to several performers. He's writing for other people. Do you get a sense of where his true love life lies? Is it in writing and performing or producing? Yeah, I think all three. He likes each of them equally as well.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=1693.81,1798.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He enjoys writing songs. He does that mainly at home. But I think that with his Gemini personality, part of him is very involved in the literary aspect. But then another part wants to be extrovert, and that's when he does his concerts. Okay. Okay. We have another question from the audience. Yeah. Who's his real girlfriend? That's hard to say because all of his girlfriends think they're the one and they always find out about somebody else. So I really don't know any more who's rumored to be the girl. Well, they're trying to say right now Sheila E! And I think to some degree that's definitely true, because whenever she's done anything separate with from him, where it is involved, her traveling, whenever she arrives at her location, she always finds a dozen roses from him. And I think that means he thinks she's pretty special because why else would he go to all that trouble? Let me ask you. We've heard that he doesn't smoke. He doesn't he's not into drugs and some other things. Isn't that a kind of the opposite of the way that he appears to be just kind of all out and anything goes and pleasure? Yes. In fact, when I first met him, I was very hesitant about becoming too friendly with him because I just assumed that that would be his lifestyle. And I found out I was completely wrong. He goes to bed early. He doesn't even like to hang around people who use drugs that get some pretty upset, in fact. Why do you think, then, that we have that impression of him, that he's into drugs and it's really he's kind of like representative of the drug culture because he looks because of his appearance, he looks like somebody who might be into that sort of thing.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=1798.67,1899.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He looks sort of degenerate to some degree. He gets a lot of his clothing from them, and we plan to feature other styles and things in our magazine and future issues. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. And to I believe you brought with you some photos. Oh, yes, I do that. A lot of people might not either remember or have never seen or friends, particularly going back in time. Can you tell us a little bit about some of them? Well, we have a lot of different things that our art department put together for us. And what they consist of are primarily publicity shots that the public may not have seen because at the time they were taken, he wasn't quite as famous. For instance, we have one shot of him where his hair. Okay, this isn't the one I'm speaking of, but this picture was not too old because that's a concert shot. But I think we also have in our pile something of him in an afro. Now, that's from the tour. That's when he tells people, Do you want to take a bath with me? And he's actually in a bathtub. Yes. And water spurts out, I suppose. I haven't seen the concert tour yet because whenever it got to a city where I was, I was traveling and I always missed the concert. Okay, what about this one? We've been asking people to call us and thank you for calling. Do you have a question or comment? Prince has been nominated for so many Grammys. Do you think he will put in an appearance at the American Music Awards show? I think he would come. He's always been there. It's just that you never saw him because he wasn't on stage or anything, but he always goes. What do you think his chances are of winning and how many Grammys do you think he might win? That's hard to say. He has some very stiff competition for the Grammys because he's up against people like Bruce Springsteen. So he may not be that successful there, but I think he'll do well at the American Music Awards because they're picked by the people. Fantastic. Well, we'll know soon, won't we? Yeah. Okay. It's just that I think that he changed some of the elements that involved his parents to make them seem more interesting or controversial to the viewers. Okay. Thank you. And a question from the audience. You heard it. Prince was on Dick Clark's show and he walked off during the middle of the concert and Dick Clark told him it would never be on TV again. Is this true? I'm not sure if that's true or not. I because I don't know what year this may have happened. I know that once I went down to American Bandstand and there were some problems with Prince, because at that time he hadn't been interviewed that much by anybody. And he had a lot of trouble relating to Dick Clark. And he came off looking kind of rude when he really didn't mean to because I was there. And I think that may be where that rumor got started. Now, if anything more happened, I'm not really sure what taping that was or anything about it, but that could be where it stemmed from. Thank you. He had a bit of information we didn't know. But not everybody is happy with Prince. In fact, when he went to his hometown of Minneapolis, he was not welcome there. In fact, he was kind of greeted by protesters who called him the prince of perversion. Hmm. Now, that kind of a midwest town or. Yes, Midwest town, it's kind of interesting that he would come out of a town like that being as forward as he is. Well, if I've been to Minneapolis on several occasions because he wanted me to see where he was from. So I have been there. And I find most of the young people to be very, very progressive.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=2512.9,2612.8"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"In fact, he's not the only one who wears his hair the way he does. Everybody back there has their hair in that style or a similar fashion with all that gel that keeps it, you know, stuck in one place. Do you think that's because of Prince or do you think that happened before? I think it happened before because there are many musicians that I've met who've been wearing their hair like that for years and they've got the photos to prove it. Okay. We want to ask you about Mother's Day as well, but let's take a call from home. Hi. Do you have a prince question or comment? Hello? Yes. I'd like to ask Cynthia. Does she know the exact age press is now and how old he left when he first started out? Okay. He's now 26. What had happened was his age had been held back and they said he was 18 when he was actually 20 because they wanted him to look a little younger so that he would seem more like a child prodigy. This was the record company? No, this was his manager. His first manager. Okay. How is he fair Do. A lot of performers who had the type of rise to stardom that that that princess had go through kind of changes of management and agents and things like that, as he maintains some kind of continuity there. No, he is not. In fact, he's now with his third firm. The manager that he had when I met him was someone who used to work with Jimi Hendrix. But this person, his name is Owen Husni is now working with Jesse Johnson, a former member of the time. He also managed Andre Simon. Okay, we're going to take a break, but please keep on voting for our two contestants and the Prince Look Alike contest.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=2613.46,2709.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And we'll be back with Cynthia Horner and had some additional surprises related to Bret. Got you. Yes. We're back. Continuing our salute to Prince. Our guest is Cynthia Horner of right wing magazine, editor in chief of Vital magazine. And we've been trying to find out a little bit more about the prince that we've all seen and heard on stage and screen. But let's what's next for Prince? You know, particularly, you know, he's at the pinnacle right now. Where's the go from here? Well, he wants to direct because he enjoyed the success of Purple Rain, but he wants to take it further. He wants to be in control behind the scenes from this point on. So I think that we'll see a lot more from him film wise, recording wise. I really do not know because I think that what he would like to do is develop a new sound because there are so many imitators of him now. He doesn't want to be one of a crowd. He wants to remain in the forefront, which obviously is a must that he can really do, though, to to change the sound. I mean, he has such a distinctive style. And of course, there are people beginning to sound like them. But what sort of thing? Well, it's hard to say. I think that they're coming up with a lot of new equipment music wise, and he can experiment with that. I know that's what Stevie Wonder is working on right now with some computers. So I assume Prince could do something along that lines because they're always inventing new musical equipment. Now know our show is devoted to Prince, but my stay has come on rather strong since Purple Rain. That's right. Tell us about him.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954#t=2710.45,2868.33"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105326/file/205954/transcript/48872/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, he's a great person. He is really, really funny, just like in the movie. They didn't really have to write that many lines for him because that is just him to the tee, because I know him very well. What's he like? He's very extroverted. He's somebody who will make you like him. He just he comes on that strong and all the little lines that he would deliver with it with Jerome in talking about women. That's the kind of thing he would talk about. Do you think he's going to give Prince any real stiff competition? Because word is from those who saw the movie. I won't say whether or not I did or didn't, but that he almost upstaged Fred. Well, that could happen any way because he had a humorous part, whereas Prince didn't have a humorous part. He was very sensitive and he had a lot of anger and other types of emotions of that nature, which he had to express. And Morris Day was there to be a foil for him. So even though Prince was sort of upstaged to one degree, it was still Prince's movie and Maurice would go on and do other things. What? I don't know, because he doesn't know yet himself. But he did sign a three picture deal. So he will be coming out with some type of film soon. That's great. Joining us on the set, we're having a salute to Prince. So we wouldn't feel right if we didn't bring you something a little bit extra. So joining us on the set is none other than Prince himself. You use this for an educational show. What kind of educating do you do with that? Well, the celebrities that I make have come off. They are the mannequins, and you can put them on the guys. And we used to have a comedian, Chris Thomas, who was doing the voice impressions. And we're going around the schools and hospitals, putting on educational shows, talking about the celebrity as a person, not just entertainment. How long did it take you to do this? And what's the the material? It's paper glue and burned latex. You have to introduce the young lady who's with you. Just give us her name. Just give us her name. Oh, Jackson. Hi. Thank you for bringing that by. We love that color. One other thing that I think we'd like to point out is the fact that possibly we could introduce this as the new line in the tours for some of the hot entertainers. I mean, what could be more appropriate than to have your picture taken with a life sized facsimile of your favorite artist, especially if it's been signed, such as the one with Michael Jackson, which was successfully signed in his hotel suite when he was staying at the Helmsley Palace in New York over the summer. Okay. Thank you very much. We really appreciate the surprise. Thank you very much for being with us. Thank you. Getting back to to the issue, we are talk about the poor, the the sexism. Oh, okay. And we're going to be talking about how Baltimore City is dealing with the homeless and what kind of help is going to go right. And Mayor Schaefer has come up with some pretty innovative ideas to raise funds to help the homeless. And we'd like to invite you to be in our studio audience with us next week.
