It's primary day in Maryland. Time for the voters to have their say. And it seems just like that's just what they're doing to Suzanne Collins is standing by live at a polling place at the Patton Center in Highland Town. Suzanne. Well, Don, I tell you, there are a number of factors today that could contribute to a really big voter turnout. And the first one is that the weather's incredibly beautiful, so it's certain that rain won't be keeping people inside today. And while we're not voting for a president this year, there is a heated race for governor, and that's increasing turnout. Dozens of offices are up for grabs. The attorney general's office, the entire legislature in Annapolis, the House and Senate. And of course, there's a US Senate seat that's up as well. All of the House of Representatives seats are being voted on today, and the state Board of Elections administrator in for Maryland expects a significant turnout. Optimistically speaking, I think we'll have a 40% voter turnout throughout the state of Maryland. And I based this on past performances. The great weather that's out there today, plus the amount of activity, political activity, plus the amount of absentee ballots that our office has been requesting, all kinds of questions. Are they asking, for example? Well, let's see, what would this guy do for us? What would that guy do for us? Well, I think if they listen to the TV and the radio and read the paper, you could answer that question yourself. Most candidates, I've known him in the past, and a lot of them. I look at the records, you know what they voted for, what they didn't vote for, what their primary interests have been. You know, I've done a lot of reading about the candidates, and it was difficult to decide for some of the officers.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961#t=127.24,224.41"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961/transcript/71321/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But you're a schoolteacher and that's what you're looking at. I definitely look at people's views on education and how what they want to do to for education and how they're going to handle that issue. Yes, that and gun control are probably my main concerns. And this is Barbara Jackson. She's our city election administrator. Barbara, I heard you had gotten a ton of calls this morning. People very furious or frustrated. What are they so worried about? Well, we've had quite a few people that have gone to the polls and couldn't read and couldn't vote because they did not change their address. And does that have something to do with redistricting? Are they not registered in their right district? Yes. 90% of all voters in the city received a new voters card. By law. If that court comes back to us, then we have to remove them from the books and we get, I'm sorry they can't vote today. No they cannot. They have to reregister. Last question I had. Are there mechanical problems? I know we have some times where machines break down. Are you running into that today? Well, as each election, we have a few machines that we can't get open until a mechanic goes out. And it's basically due to the judges not knowing how to really open a machine, as opposed to a real mechanical problem. Thank you very much. So Don will be keeping an eye on voter turnout, and we'll be getting back to you at 5:00 tonight with a report and just how big the turnout actually was. Okay. Thank you. Those running for governor were out bright and early to cast their ballots. Also on the ballot are some local races from county executive to register of wills had anything as massive as a statewide election, rarely runs completely without problems, as you heard, and there were a few more today, with one causing a polling place to open two hours and 45 minutes late. It was in the city's 45th legislative district, inside the Hartford Center for Senior Citizens, where the 500 or so registered voters in the seventh precinct of the 27th Ward had to wait. When one party's precinct judge didn't post a quarter of ten instead of 7:00, and a lot of people were turned away and they were getting on planes and going to other cities, they won't be able to vote. They could have voted by absentee ballot had they known other people were working past 8:00. Now they won't get to vote. That's absolutely right. And so there's nothing I can do. I call twice officer here called twice. And they said they're sending someone in a cab on waivers. We haven't seen them yet. The same thing happened when I went to vote down at Saint Matthews. They weren't open until about 830 because they didn't have a Republican judge. So the same thing happens. But here, Dorothy could be sworn in as a Republican judge and was, but not before some would be voters left in a huff. And one more gentle reminder to you this is the time. I mean, we've been in this real nice sort of taste of early fall weather for the last 9 or 10 days now, and we are starting to break out of that. Summer doesn't officially end until actually the 23rd of the month, as we had noted a few days ago. And, so we still have some summer days left and it's going to feel like summer appropriately. And right locked in here is a really extensive area of fair weather, although that area of fair weather is turning more and more tropical, that's to say, more and more warm and humid. Here's how the satellite loop shows all of this developing. Then notice the motion of the clouds over the last 24 hours or so, still from the north and west. I think we will see some high clouds around there, some very thin, high clouds out there right now. So don't be surprised to see those more evident during the afternoon. But that northwesterly flow is what kept us in the nice, relatively low humidity, air mass that we've had for the last any number of days. But that's not going to last forever. Large, massive high pressure system with its clockwise circulation was driving that. But this high pressure system now drifting offshore is going to end up reversing the flow. And as it turns and comes out of the south and southwest, it will start drawing in some of that moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, some of those warmer temperatures from the lower tier of states. Topping today's noon Healthwatch report, scientists have confirmed what many have believed all along. The older you get, the more likely you are to develop cancer. A report published in the National Academy of Sciences today says age is the single most significant risk factor for cancer. Also in Healthwatch, dioxin has been added to the long list of cancer causing chemicals report published by the Environmental Protection Agency today says dioxin, even in trace amounts, can cause cancer and harm human immune and even reproductive systems. Dioxin is a chemical usually released into the air through processes like burning trash or bleaching paper. But the report finds you can also be exposed to it by eating fish, meat, eggs and dairy products. But scientists say do do not change your diet, since the benefits of a balanced diet outweigh the risks of dioxin. And that's today's noon Healthwatch report. Well, topping our people, making news this noon. Ethel Kennedy is often known as the good looking, high spirited wife of Robert F Kennedy. Of course. But a new book called The Other Mrs. Kennedy portrays a woman with a very dark side. Now, the author of that biography, he's Jerry Oppenheimer, and he joins us right now live via satellite from New York. Hi, Jerry. Hi, Bob. Nice. Glad to be here. Hey, thanks for joining us. Of course, this is a, a biography that has hit the newsstands recently. What are some of the highlights of this? Well, I think there are a lot of shocking, revelations in the book. One is that, after Bobby Kennedy was, shot in Los Angeles in 1968, Ethel had to make the, very tragic decision to pull the plug on him. The world had not been told about it, but he had essentially been brain dead for, from the time he was shot. Also, after, Bobby's death, two of, her, Ethel's, sons, David and Bobby turned to drugs.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961#t=1414.94,1528.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961/transcript/71321/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Devastated by their father's death. Their mother had lost control of the children at that point. Did not have anyone to fall back on. She was hoping to get the support of, Senator Ted Kennedy, her brother in law, to help with the children. But within a year of, Bobby's death, Chappaquiddick happened, and, Ted's life fell apart. So Ethel's life has been so tragic. And I think the only thing that has really brought her through it is her strong religious beliefs. And she she she literally believes that one day she will be in heaven with with Bobby and David. And that's carried her through the many tragedies she's faced. Now, after, I mean, after Bobby's demise, her relationship with the Kennedy clan was rather strained. But wasn't it strained before that? Oh, yes. It was. Ethel came from a family called the Skakel family, a very wealthy, Catholic, powerful family, in Greenwich, Connecticut. And they were conservative Republicans, while the Kennedys, of course, are liberal Democrats. And there was constant feuding between both families. In fact, at one point, the Skakel refused to ever support the Kennedys politically. And Ethel's father, actually forced the Kennedy patriarch, Joe Kennedy, to come hand in hand to get a campaign contribution. They were fighting constantly, and and the Skakel family was filled with scandals. And Ethel always feared that those scandals would embarrass the Kennedys. One of the biggest, of course, came after Bobby's death. And that was the murder in Greenwich, Connecticut, of a 15 year old girl. And one of Ethel's, nephews is still one of the prime suspects in that case. So she's. She's gone through hell. Okay. Is this an unauthorized biography or authorized? Unauthorized. The sun is setting on Maryland's primary election day, and tonight we have team coverage of the political careers, and the office is up for grabs as Marylanders go to the polls. Election officials are sticking to their early predictions of about a 40% turnout by voters around the state. It may have looked like just another sunny day on the College Park campus, but this day, Election Day, was very different. You register to vote by county. Lloyd Dallas was busy trying to drum up support for his candidates. Signs at the student union warned how far poll workers could go. For the first time in history, students had a polling place on campus. You know, I think it's a wonderful idea to have a place where you can not only get the community involvement and also get our future generation, which goes to students. There were campaign signs everywhere, but finding students who were voting here today was difficult. The vast majority of the students are registered in their where they live, or they're doing absentee voting, and they're not registered here. The vast majority, while voting has been light much of the day, the students who are casting their ballots say they like the idea of having a polling place right on campus. What is your address? 4200. Not sure. For students like Chris McCarthy, voting for years ago was an ordeal, but not this time election. I had to get on a bus and go to, you know, an elementary school. And this is a lot more convenient because right now I'm on a break in between classes so I can just pop in, vote, and then go back to class. It's definitely convenient because I spend most of my day here. I'm taking 15 credits, so it's definitely convenient. Okay, so you voted this morning? I did vote this morning for classes. Okay. So it's going to be an interesting night tonight. And of course, Eyewitness News will be in college. PA for complete coverage of the Glendening campaign around about the some of the students being from out of state, others voting in the precincts around the state in which they live. How's the turnout been at the University of Maryland? Well, the turnout here has been horrible, to say the least. It's very slim. Last check of the 1700, voters that are registered in this precinct, only 71 people have voted. So that's extremely light. In fairness, there are some non-students registered in this precinct. And interestingly enough, in this particular precinct on the College Park campus, 25% of those registered are registered as independents. So one out of every four voters cannot vote in this primary. Now, still very surprisingly low number. Thank you. Yes it is. All right, Sally Thorne, by the way, we'll have complete team coverage of Glendenning at his campaign headquarters later tonight. There have been few major problems at polling places around the state on this primary election day. In one case, the polls opened almost three hours late in the city's 45th legislative district, when one party's precinct judge failed to show up, some voters left without casting their ballots. Well, Maryland's leading Democratic gubernatorial candidates cast their ballots early today, starting with front runner Parris Glendening in Prince George's County. Melvin Mickey Steinberg, who trailed in the polls throughout the campaign, voted near his home in Pikesville. Now I can show Chayefsky cast his ballot the Hampton Center and the Paterson Park area. The leading Republican candidate, Congresswoman Helen Bentley, greeted campaign supporters at the Hot Springs Elementary School in Baltimore County, and her chief opponent, Delegate Ellen Sauer, voted this morning at Jacksonville Elementary School in northern Baltimore County. The polls showed Stourbridge gaining on Bentley during the last phase of the campaign. One man, who was certainly unaccustomed to being out of the spotlight on Election Day is outgoing Governor William Donald Schaefer. Appearing on Eyewitness News at five, Schaefer said he was surprised not to find his name today on the ballot. He also talked about the lack of heated races around the state during the primary. There wasn't any any life. There wasn't any major issues except in areas where people had a particular candidate they were interested in. Butterball is laced with stitches, closing wounds he received when a pit bull tore into him three days ago. We have a major laceration which extends here from the left shoulder, goes around the dog and stops on the right shoulder. And this is Maxey. After my husband, Butterball, was sitting in the window and Max ran up to Christopher Payton. I had the door open because the chain was still on the door. My dog went through the chain door, thought that he was going to help him, but then that's when the pit bull got him. The pit bull belongs to a neighbor, Joe Red, and. And today we found her with her dog. He suffered some damage in the fight, too, and they beat him in the head so bad that they cut the muscle. He couldn't hold his head and we took him to the vet. They're focused on the mayoral race. The big question is, will Marion Barry reclaim his old job? Recent polls show Councilman Barry and his rival, John Ray, are virtually neck and neck in their bids to unseat incumbent Mayor Sharon Kelly. With the polls closing in less than two hours, officials are hoping for about a 40% turnout of eligible voters. In his commentary tonight, Michael Alaska asks, is this what the candidates bought for all their money? Well, if we have a 40% turnout, if we do, it means 60% did not turn out. So that's not so great. If anybody ever did a cost effective ratio on spending in this race, they'd fire everybody involved. How do you figure all the countless TV and radio commercials, all the millions of dollars spent, and only about 40% of the electorate shows up anyway, what this tells us is a simple and painful truth. For all the sound and fury, the candidates have told us very little of significance about how voting for them would affect our lives. They found out we're worried about crime, so they all called themselves tough on crime. They heard we're worried about jobs. So they said they bring jobs to Maryland, but nobody particularly said how they would do it. And worse than that, those flimsy claims seemed almost parenthetical to the real thrust of campaigning, which was the other person's a bum. So you better not vote for him. Well, if everybody's the one not to vote for who's left. So they gave us every reason not to get out and vote. And that's apparently what most of us went out and did. Some are in Vietnamese, while others are in Spanish. Each is unique, but the common thread is the fact that they're all greetings to Pope John Paul the Second. There was a lot of discussion in the community, as we anticipated the Pope's visit about ways in which people could, formally express, their good wishes and their prayers for the Holy Fathers visit and express themselves. They have. The archdiocese sent out thousands of sheets of blank paper to Maryland churches, temples, and synagogues. But there is another big seller of tickets, and Dick Elfman says you may soon be hearing from them. Absolutely. They're making a lot of phone calls because they are very aggressively now marketing these tickets. So you'll be getting direct mail or phone calls. Believe me, these people are called ticket consolidators. They're sort of a wholesaler of tickets. They buy blocks of tickets from the airlines and hope to resell them to you. But there are some risks. Maybe it's the airline's safety record. Maybe it's the most on time airline or the one that loses your luggage the least. But of all the factors that could influence your decision of which airline to fly. Price remains the most important to most consumers. Ticket Consolidators say they can't be beat there. They contract with the airlines to sell a specific number of seats on certain flights and deeply discount the price. But some Consolidators have been accused of selling tickets they don't have and have left the passengers behind. You might want to check to make sure the consolidator is legitimate and that you'll really get your tickets. The best way to do that is to call the airline that that consolidator works with, and ask whether the company is an appointed agent. Now, don't use the word consolidator because all airlines will tell you that they don't deal with consolidators. Also, be sure to charge your purchase by credit card. Its refund policy doesn't have to be the same as the airlines, and can severely limit your right to make any changes. You may not be eligible for frequent flier miles. Consolidators usually don't operate out of a storefront like regular travel agents, so you may find it difficult to find them in case of a problem. And price wars are on again, so you may be able to meet or beat a consolidators price. But keep in mind that there is a lot more to fly than the price of the ticket. Well, let's say you do buy a ticket from a consolidator and you have a problem with it. Who do you complain to? Well, the problem is that they come out of different states. They're not. A very few are actually out of Maryland. The Consolidators are out of states like Pennsylvania, new Jersey, New York, and a lot of the states don't have escrow laws that require the consolidators to put their money in escrow until the flight leaves. Some states do. So basically what happens is you have to go to the state where the consolidator is, contact the attorney general's office in that state and see if the money is in escrow. If the money is in escrow, you'll get it back. If it's not in escrow, you're history. Well, that could be a real pain. Yeah, yeah. So you have to really. She and a friend went to the place where the Beatles were staying, the Holiday Inn on Lombard Street, and they ran into some other girl friends of ours who had gone to the earlier concert, and the one girl had gotten a match pack that John Lennon had thrown out the window. There have been many other concerts in the three decades since the Beatles performed on this stage, but those who saw the Fab Four will tell you little else can compare. The next day, the news American proclaimed the Beatles came, saw and conquered the holiday and gave the bed sheets on which the four had slept. So we took the bed sheets. We cut them into inch squares and they went in no time at all, simply because, everybody wanted a piece of that big moment. Some predicted the group would be a flash in the pan. Well, I tell you, she is here. She arrived a short time ago, and the AP may be declaring Bentley the loser, but Bentley hasn't done that quite yet herself. A somber Helen Bentley got up on the stage just a moment ago before 11:00 here at Timonium Fairgrounds, and she did not concede. We'll give you a little bit of information on what she did say with this tape. And next week, no matter what happens. I will be returning to Washington and continue my job proudly representing the people of Maryland second Congressional District. Now all that cheering went up because Bentley said, we're going to wait and see what those numbers show. She was not really conceding. We have not heard a concession speech here. So what she did was she focused off the governor's race. She focused instead on the congressional race in that speech. She talked about how she would go back to Congress and fulfill her duty there next week, no matter what happens tonight. She also talked about wanting to assure that she gets behind whoever the Republican is. As far as filling her footsteps in Congress.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961#t=5680.97,5769.14"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961/transcript/71321/annotation/57","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But we have not heard a concession speech tonight, and we're waiting to see if we do. As you might expect, many of the state's top Democrats are at the Clinton Denning camp tonight down in Prince George's County, College Park. Sally Thorne is. And we're going to go back for another live report from the Glendinning camp. Sally, now, as I've been telling you all night, this extremely well-organized campaign had a very specific agenda after the acceptance speech. We all drew numbers in a lottery, and it's just not our turn yet. But right here now is Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Congratulations. Thank you very much. It's very exciting. You are a neighbor of mine in Baltimore County. How can Baltimore County and Baltimore City folk, for that matter, be assured that you won't forget us if you get into Annapolis in November? I love Baltimore County. I think it's very important. Baltimore City is one of the centers of the state. And, Parris Glendening has shown as county executive, Prince George's County, he has a very inclusive vision. Everybody is involved. And he believes very strongly that if educated education is the most important priority, that's going to focus primarily on Baltimore City. One more question. You've heard about the Republican side tonight. Yes. Your reaction? My reaction is that we have got a positive vision, and it doesn't matter who we run against. So it doesn't change our strategy, whether it's our Urban league. Not at all. Because the real question is who can best take Maryland into the 21st century? And I believe that by Danny Townsend.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961#t=5769.56,5860.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136375/file/252961/transcript/71321/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Timken. Congratulations once again, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, lieutenant governor, nomination from the Democratic side. We have some tape we'd like to show you right now, a person who made his acceptance speech for the Democratic nod just a few moments ago. We will reach out throughout the state of Maryland. We will bring together every part of the state, working together for a common vision. We will bring business, labor, and environmentalists all working together so that we may in fact progress together. And we will bring every portion of our population into the state administration and into the wonderful future that we see for this state. You stay on the phone with him till we get in here. Now, as I said, we are making our way or he is making our way to Paris. Glendening that is. And if we get in while you're still on the air, Denise, now we will talk with him live. If not, you'll have to see it through the magic of television tomorrow morning and Eyewitness News. All right. Thank you. Sally. Sally again live in College Park with the Paris Glendenning camp. Ami, at this point. At this point, well, a Democrat be able to reclaim the Baltimore County Executive Office. Well, there's been a race there. Of course, Roger Hagan is running for reelection in the Republican. But the Democrats, there's really two there's Mel Mintz and there's Rupert Berger joining us now from Dutch Rubis Burgos headquarters and overlay is Pat Warren. This from the man who brought cheers from the crowd every time he posted the numbers. I am confident. I know you're not supposed to predict, but we are now doubling the vote of the next person in line up there. I won't mention his name. I predict triple or quadruple the vote before it's over. Most of the people here tonight spent all day campaigning for their candidate, and they were happy to do it. Where's your green shirt? I just wore my red firefighter shirt today. I had that it was all sweaty from working the polls all day. And I tell you, I love it. We're going to take a swing right on to November to day, and that is going to be our next county executive. Is that a kind of margin you were expecting? We we only know that we sent this campaign to the streets with a lot of people, and we were assuming with a strong grassroots campaign with these great volunteers that we would do well. But I didn't know what kind of margin. Well, it's a pretty good one so far, I guess. Pretty good. And I really think that it shows that we can unify Baltimore County and get our county back to where we need to be. And we're going to continue with this momentum and take our race to the people, and we're going to keep multiplying a grassroots campaign. Well, I've been hearing that. It's been very graphic. It has been a very grassroots campaign. Well, it really has. And anybody who wants to join us are going door to door, knocking on doors and waving. Yes, the Maryland Democratic race for comptroller and, the incumbent, Louis Goldstein, with obviously a very comfortable lead at this point, 51% of the precincts reporting. Joseph Curran, by the way, was elected. And we're going to do that now. We are right now at this point, we're not asking what we're going to do. Joe Curran is there, and he has been saying all evening that he now expects to be the winner. And the Democratic candidate for attorney general. And Greg started there live with Joe. And it looks like everybody believes is the winner there. No doubt about that. A lot of enthusiasm in this room, as you can see behind me. And a very enthusiastic attorney general and Joe Curran, are you ready to declare victory yet? Well, I feel very good. And people were saying L and Sara Bray, who she wrote how how could she, how could she possibly how could she possibly be the winner in a year and a half? Well, my gosh, what has gotten us this far is a strong message of fiscal responsibility that we're going to restore fiscal sanity to this state, and we're going to give tax relief to the overtaxed citizens of Maryland. The voters today cast their ballots for a true fiscal conservative. They're tired of watching higher taxes and more regulations drive people and businesses out of Maryland. The call for less government, for an end to wasteful spending, and for a return to common sense is sweeping across Maryland. Paul Rappaport and I have been listening. We have been listening carefully to what people have been saying, and we have set the agenda for this election. Our message one of shrinking, bloated government, one of making the changes in our tax and our regulatory climate that will truly bring new investment and new jobs to Maryland, is the message that's going to attract not just Republicans, but Democrats and independent voters alike.
