Anything else you want to do outside today? Take a look. This is what it looks like. It's a nice, very picturesque day. One thing we can tell you, too, along with the ice, the sun right now is very, very bright. Of course, the sun is a little closer to this time of year than it is ordinarily. But right now, because the skies are completely just clear if you're driving, I guess that would be eastward or southeast where the sun is really, really bright. So a lot of folks heading to churches in the downtown area are going to be dealing with that this morning. But it is clear day. Very nice day. The thaw will continue. We're getting back up to temperatures very much like we were yesterday. Downtown temperature is 32 degrees right now. We'll get up to about 42, as we did yesterday. And the nice thing about that is that there will be less wind. Yesterday got really gusty at some points, but we're back down again overnight to below freezing 26 degrees. So this stuff again will probably refreeze. So of course, we'll have a complete first warning forecast coming up in just about six minutes with what's going on for the rest of the week. All right. But first, let's take a look at what people are talking about this morning. For the second time this year, a Baltimore City police officer is involved in a fatal shooting. Again, obviously, they was testing the guy. He got the best of the fight ahead, pops on the ground and next thing you know, police got pulled his gun out and shot the boy. It happened just after 5 p.m. when Officer Craig Kline, a three year police veteran, attempted to make a drug related arrest near Lansing in Bethel. Preliminarily, it appears that a struggle ensued between the officer and the suspect, according to the officer. At that time, the suspect was on top of the officer made a comment indicating that he had a weapon. The officer, fearing for his life, fired a single shot. Friends and family tell Eyewitness News the victim's name is Frank and he's 33 years old. They're upset police shot him but admit he has a history of drug dealing and run ins with the law. Do you know your brother to sell drugs? Yes, sometimes you do. Has he been in trouble? Yes, he's been in trouble quite a few times. In this exclusive interview, Police Commissioner Ron Daniel tells Eyewitness News. A thorough investigation is underway, but based on preliminary information, he says Officer Klein appeared to be defending himself against an assault. It's no different than anyone else being assaulted in, but police officers carry guns. And, you know, the absolute fear is your gun being taken and used against you. This is the second police involved shooting in 24 hours and the second fatal shooting involving a police officer this year. Last night, Officer Jerry Weaver, an 18 year Eastern District veteran, was wounded in the arm by a suspect in the 1700 block of Chapel Street. Just a very tragic time for the police department, and we certainly sympathize with the Weaver family. Dennis Edwards, WJC Eyewitness News. And Officer Weaver is on routine administrative duty pending an investigation. There's tragic news this morning from the officer involved in Friday night's fatal shooting. Plain clothes officer Jerry Weaver was shot and wounded while responding to a call for alleged drug dealing in East Baltimore after his distraught mother visited him in the hospital. She had a heart attack and died. Officer Weaver is in fair condition this morning. Police have a suspect in custody charged with attempted murder. Police Commissioner Ronald Daniel says a suspect of his own or nails a suspect of his own, rather, after a run in with an alleged drug dealer. The commissioner tells Eyewitness News he was driving along landfill in Pace and streets in West Baltimore yesterday morning when a man offered him a deal that he couldn't refuse. I was driving an unmarked vehicle in my own neighborhood and a gentleman was on the corner and he gave me a special signal that I'm aware of, indicating that he had marijuana and want to know if I want to purchase one. I just drove right by him and parked about a half a block away and got on the phone and calls him on duty. Western District police officers. Now, this is Daniel, second arrest since he took office. Last month, he arrested a Carroll County man for allegedly buying drugs in Baltimore. Wow. Top cop does it himself. Bad luck for that one guy. Good luck for Baltimore City. He's still, you know, he's still a, you know, a man that believes in the system and understands that because he did not kill anybody, he should not be held for murder and will not continue to be held for murder or for any crime. Lewis is held without bond, charged in the stabbing deaths of Jacintha Baker and Richard Lawlor outside of an Atlanta nightclub. The arrest warrant and affidavit released Friday states that Lewis participated in the beating and stabbing and then fled with others in a limousine he had rented in Glen Burnie. He did not know what had happened when he left the scene, and the limousine in which he was in was fired upon. But his attorneys now say Lewis was only trying to break up the fight. Sherry says new developments in the case are surfacing every day. The evidence is evolving. I mean, it there's there's new stuff that comes out every day. I talked to Ed 3 or 4 times a day, um, with new developments and, um, yeah, from, from both sides. Um, not so much the general idea of whether he is guilty or innocent that, you know, we know that and we're, we're okay with that. But various ways to prove it, um, that those are developing every day and the most difficult will be proving Ray Lewis did not participate in the fight in any way. That's tomorrow at five and 11, only on Eyewitness News. Well, Eyewitness News now has an update on the case of a Maryland man charged with abducting his daughters from their mother in Europe. Christopher Yabulu was the focus of a multi-state manhunt last year. Police initially tracked him down and arrested him in Texas. The girls were returned to their mother in the Netherlands. Now, a Baltimore County judge has tentatively dismissed charges of child abduction. This news will bring you more information as it becomes available. Cal Ripken will be available to play with the Orioles this season, but he's already talking about retirement plans. The Orioles third baseman joined former L.A. The Iron Man also worked out with University of Utah baseball players who are getting ready for spring training. This makes me feel warmer. Well, I'm waiting for a friend of mine. Oh. Are you okay? And I'm not seeing any in the forecast, so it might be a little while. All right. So temperatures right now aren't too bad. Take a look at what we're talking about. Basically, right around 25 degrees. I say not too bad because that's seasonable. We're expecting temperatures to be right around that for this time of year. Average temperature for this day in February is just around 38 degrees and we're expecting to get up to about 42. So that's not too bad. Days are getting a little longer. Sun's out a little longer, so we'll warm up a little easier this time of year. 29 degrees in Salisbury right now. A little bit of a a cold front trying to dip in, but it's not getting any closer to maybe the northern tip of Pennsylvania. We're going to start to see temperatures stay pretty consistent right around the 40 degree mark for the next few days. There are some clouds moving in. And of course, right around the Great Lakes, you'll start to see some lake effect that's going to be around. There may be a flurry here or there for the next few days. Certainly no accumulation. There are some showers and of course, the colder temperatures in Pennsylvania bringing any lake effect that way down maybe to the surface because it is cold enough to let it get to the surface before it evaporates. But we're not seeing any of that across Maryland. Nothing of the sort. We're talking about temperatures staying right around 40 for the next few days. The thaw will continue. Of course, we'll look for mostly sunny conditions, less wind yesterday. And as we said, temperatures are right where they should be, right around 42 degrees. And then tonight, clear to partly cloudy clouds, maybe coming in a little more hefty toward the sunrise. But no, no rain in the forecast stays cold, though, well below freezing at 26 degrees. She's from Baltimore. She's just an incredible artist who uses multimedia to express her art form. The first room that you'll see in the exhibit contains fabrics and textiles that Joyce has handcrafted. Her mother was a quilter, and perhaps this inspired her incredible artistic talent. She uses not just your typical paints that you might think of, but also beads and all kinds of things. With us this morning is George Cecil, the curator for this exhibit. Good morning, George. Good morning, Brenda. Tell us, Katie wants to know why do they call it kicking it with the old Masters? Well, Joyce certainly has been inspired by the collection of the museum. As a young woman, she came here with her mother, Elizabeth Telford Scott, and also through her studies at the Maryland Institute, a collaborating institution for this exhibition. She has known the collection for quite some time, and many of her works throughout the exhibition are paired with some of the master for works from the collection here. That's what makes it so interesting. We can look at some of her works of art and compare it to an old master and see what are the similarities, what are the differences? Again, her medium is very different. Let's follow Heavy down here as we take a closer look of some of her. Does she refer to it as sculpture, even though it's made from beads? This is a multimedia artist. She does work in sculpture using beads as the medium. And also those beads are used in jewelry and also in site specific installation work, which was also in the last ten years as working in glass and in printmaking. That was one dove for each person who died in the crash. The controversy over six year old Elian Gonzalez takes root here in Maryland. A multicultural group of protesters is joining the child custody debate by sending a message to Washington. They want the child to be sent home to his father. We appear different, but we are united in our voices in saying send Elian Gonzalez home to Cuba. They represent a cross-section of race, age and culture. And today, the all Peoples Congress has taken the stance that Elian Gonzalez belongs in Cuba with his father. In just a small way, we want to show that the opinion of people in Baltimore and Maryland is to send Elian home. Members of the People's Congress are joining with members of the Cuban American community who want Elian returned to his father. You'll recall Elian was found floating on Thanksgiving Day. He says his son has been kidnaped and manipulated here in Baltimore. The All Peoples Congress agrees. The six year old's U.S. relatives say he's being treated well, but the letter prompted state social workers to visit the home for more than an hour. But thank you so much for being up this early, and you're certainly welcome. Mike is is known for soul food. And one thing that everyone says they have the best recipe for is macaroni and cheese. But you say yours is the well, we do homemade macaroni and cheese. What makes ours so unique is that it's made from scratch. It's made with fresh eggs, sharp cheese, fresh whole, evaporated milk. And then we prepare the noodles and we can give a little demonstration. That's how we put it all together. Now we're cheating a little bit because all the we have a kitchen set up here we don't have we know working stove. That's right. So you're doing this pretty much we just going to do it from scratch. First we use in one pan of cooked noodles. You get your eggs there have to use fresh eggs. This is not the instant box. Macaroni and cheese. You can't make it taste that way. So food has to be from scratch. Now cook one box of cooking noodles. And what is that you have down the middle? That's a little bit of spices and variations of cheeses that we use. Okay. And then once you get your eggs, you add in milk into it. Okay, this is evaporated, melted. You can get right out of the supermarket.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115856/file/219730#t=1699.36,1779.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115856/file/219730/transcript/62491/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You put it right over top. And this is what makes our macaroni cheese so unique is that it's not in the boxes, often scratchy, stirred in, and all the spices start to blend and mix. And as you start that, you just add some sharp cheese right into it. Okay. Just like that. Nice and gradually. And by the time you get done with all of this blending in real cheese, now, you can't use any imitation here, No imitation. This is the real stuff. To get homemade macaroni cheese, you blend your cheeses like this, that you can also use different variations of cheese. You can use a five blend cheese. Right now we're using about three cheeses here today. You prefer the cubes as opposed to shredded. The cubes are better when you're doing homemade macaroni and cheese because once they cook down, they still have some body to it. If you use the shredded cheese by the time you finish cooking in an oven, generally it will be all gone and you'll just have the flavor and you top this off with butter. That's the key to doing homemade macaroni and cheese. You have to put a layer of butter on top of it. So when you come out of the oven, it'll have a nice glaze on. It has a buttery flavor. And you're talking. This stuff is rich. Yes. Is very rich. So you have to get to the gym and exercise a little bit and eat all this. But when you get the finished product, you'll see the macaroni and cheese here. And that's why we use the shot of the cubes so you can have some bites of cheese in there versus to stretch it or the powdered cheese. Now you're talking in the oven for about how long you had to bake it in the oven for an hour to an hour, 15 minutes until the egg stiff enough.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115856/file/219730#t=1780.66,1865.53"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115856/file/219730/transcript/62491/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Because remember, now this has homemade ingredients and this is the real stuff. You'll see when we get the five, we're going to have a fairly decent, mellow time, a mild time in February. Well, 40s is still kind of cool to some people. Yeah, but when it gets up to close to 50. And as I said, with the clear skies, things will be cooling off during the overnight today, though. Yeah, 36 was the high today, so it was still kind of chilly even though it's lots of sunshine. And boy, that sunshine really does feel good. We were still, you know, kind of cool relative to our seasonal normal that headed out in the bay tomorrow. There are no advisories in place, of course, even though the water temperature here inched up one degree over yesterday. There's still a fair amount of ice in some spots on the bay. That's a seasonably cold overnight low in tomorrow. There it is, 48 degrees, the warmest day since January 16th. A mix of sun and clouds. Windy and milder, certainly. Sally Thornton looks at what happens when star athletes stand accused. That's tomorrow night at six and 11. City police officers stand accused by the families of suspects shot during drug arrests. Last night, a suspect was shot and killed. One of two police involved shootings in this single weekend. In an exclusive interview with Police Commissioner Ron Daniel, Eyewitness News investigates the impact of the shootings on public confidence and police policy. Tim Williams was coming out against the police lights, the crime scenes and the pain. Three familiar scenes becoming far too common for city residents and police. Then today, he got another shooting and so is my brother. Police then shot and in fact, this weekend has yielded to police involved shootings in 24 hours. Statistics Police Commissioner Ronald Daniel talks exclusively about with Eyewitness News. I think that what's going on in the streets just underscores the violent nature of crime in this city and fueled by the drug trade. There have been three police involved shootings this year. Each has been drug related. There have been two suspects killed. One officer injured. And while Police Commissioner Daniels says the outcomes have been tragic, he says the officers are doing what they're trained to do. They're trying. To protect themselves. They're trained to meet force with an appropriate response. Certainly if someone's struggling with a police officer and the officer always has the fear that their weapon may be used against them, if, in fact, the assailant doesn't have a weapon of their own.
