Baltimore teen agers are among the 190,000 people in Denver right now for World Youth Day. The weekend team's great started is with the Baltimore contingent in Denver and joins us live. And Greg, the Baltimore youngsters have got to be thrilled about this. They're very happy. You know, it's been a very interesting day here in Denver. The pope spent the morning saying mass. There was also an abortion demonstration, but according to police, there were no major problems. Meantime, the Baltimore delegation is preparing for a very important evening with the pope. They were chosen to take part in a special ceremony. Pope John Paul, the second celebrated mass at a Denver cathedral before hundreds of people reaching out to all Catholics, especially teenagers. But the day was briefly overshadowed by an abortion protest as both sides squared off in this ongoing fight. Hallelujah. Thank you all. I'm grateful to all of them. She said she was. Grateful. Find new things inside myself. Three of these teen agers from Charm City have been selected to take part in a vigil with Pope John Paul, the second. It's an experience of a lifetime for me and it's just something that I know I'm never going to forget. I never imagined that when I came to Denver that I knew I was going to see the pope, but I thought it would be from, you know, a mile away or maybe since the beginning of the papal visit, there have been reports of dissension within the Catholic Church that large gatherings here at Mile High Stadium and other locations were not a true indication of how things really were. But religious leaders deny there are problems between liberal and conservative members. Just as the mountains possess a certain sign of ruggedness and power. The Catholic Church says it's also very strong. What I'm seeing here in Denver is well over 170,000 young people coming to celebrate unity. Many of the teen agers from Baltimore and those from around the world spent the day hiking the Cherry Creek State Park. That's where the vigil will be held tonight with the pope. And some cases they were hiking as far as 15 miles. That's a story from Denver tonight. Now back to Tree Hill. Greg, let me ask you this. Can you hear me? Yes. You have a couple of seconds. Well, while Denver is enjoying relatively cool temperatures, our warm weather is causing some problems today. At least 27 people passed out at Baltimore's Afram celebration this afternoon from heat exhaustion. Stretchers and ambulances filled the streets around Festival hall as paramedics did their best to revive them. A lot of people falling out. Exhaustion from this heat, marching this crowded. Lot of people from the city. Firefighters came to the rescue with an instant fountain. And people were reminded to drink plenty of liquids. Dr. Bob will have more on today's heat live from Afram a little bit later on. Meantime, a city police officer is hoping to get his trial moved out of Baltimore City. The attorney for Edward Gore, well, says he wants a change of venue for the second trial. Henry Belsky says Gore well, cannot get a fair trial in the city because of all the publicity. He's charged with manslaughter for shooting a suspected car thief that the suspect was 14 year old Samantha Thomas. His first trial was declared a mistrial after a juror didn't show up for deliberations. Well, Michael Jordan says his family has been asked not to comment on the death of his father, James Jordan. Did you see how big your hard work should bring out The best in these Dunbar High school football players? Well, I love to sit around all summer. Let's go. However, their mental stamina may face a tougher challenge than all of the grunts and groans associated with gridiron warfare. Come on, don't quit now. You got to quit. Dunbar High School is rebounding off a tough blow. Head coach Pete Pompei, also known for his coaching prowess on the basketball court, faces allegations of misusing athletic department funds. The problem apparently involves operation of a concession stand at Oriole Park. Some football players say, though, it's a distraction that should remain off the field. And once you think about the public going to lose, focus on what you got to do and you'll go far about that. So, you know, we'll do our best to have a winning season. We will have a quality team, our students. I spoke to the students today about our student athlete program. This they are students first, athletes second. Stan Mitchell is the interim head coach. He's just a ten, 11, 12 year old. This is something that he probably never expected to happen at the last minute. What was it, Dr. Bob, who made those folks fall out? You're the expert. Well, well, Richard and Pat, what happens when the temperature gets up is dehydration, of course, is the problem that people succumb to. But most of the suburban areas, we're in only the upper 80s. I mean, that's warm, but we don't generally consider that to be an excruciating heat wave. But the urban areas, and particularly the people say down here at every home that we're involved in the parade, involved in some vigorous activity, you know, they can overcome your high temperature unofficially. So far, downtown was 93 degrees. We're in the upper 80s, as I mentioned, most parts of the suburban area. As I said, we we are down here at A-frame. And let me mention one other thing about it, because it does have an educational theme in it. The proceeds from the Afram Festival are going to go to a scholarship fund for Baltimore City High School graduates and also to sponsor the perfect attendance extravaganza in which 7000 city school students were honored for their attendance this past year. This year's Afram Festival is billed as a salute to the Baltimore City Teachers. So come on down and participate. It's noon to 10 p.m. tonight and also the same hours tomorrow and Sunday. But so far as the weather goes for right now, today we're talking about some heat. But the temperatures around the area right now have dropped off a little bit from the daily high. We're showing 88 degrees in most areas, although right here on the pavement downtown, it still is over 90 and upper 80s for the most part. Hold that possibility into the forecast through the evening, at least till sundown. But somebody, somewhere may see an isolated thunderstorm pop up. Doesn't look like it's going to be the severe variety or even very long lasting. Here's a current satellite view. And you notice that there is a ridge of high pressure in the vicinity and that ridge of high pressure with a warm air that's on the East Coast has locked up the cool air further north. And don't expect much of a cooling trend, although that real hot stuff out in Texas and Oklahoma, that's not going to make it here either. You'll see that for the next five days or so, we're going to have pretty typical summertime conditions as far as high temperatures tomorrow, we'll get into the upper 80s for the most part or to the low 90s again, particularly in the urban areas. Downtown thermometer should end up being somewhere around 90 degrees, as we'll say, 90 at the custom House, 88 down in Cambridge. And as far as Trip plans to go out of the bay tomorrow, not much in the way of wind. North winds 5 to 10, one foot waves, bay water temperature, upper 70s to about 80 degrees down the ocean. Plenty of sunshine, 83 for a high on the beach. Surf temperature, oh, 73 to 74 degrees or so. So here's the way it looks for the rest of tonight. Thanks. All right. Let me take your suffering from heat exhaustion. We're on the Morning edition set. We're out of our main studio now. Things are happening in there. Wait till you see what's happening in there. But we're in here now. What is that? Of all kinds. Well, that's happening with the weather. Yeah. Let's go do the weather. Here. Take me over to the weather map here. All right. Temperature outside at the moment here showing up at 74 degrees. It's still right around 80 degrees downtown. Some of the other areas around 79, a DC 77 at Wilmington, 73 at Dover. How did Hagerstown 70 degrees down at the ocean, 70 degrees in Salisbury or down of Eastern shore anyway, and Richmond, 78 degrees. What we have on the radar really is an indication that the thunderstorms, those very scattered thunderstorms occur principally on the eastern shore, have pretty much disappeared completely. A lot of thunderstorm activity down through the Carolinas as a weak system. Traverse is off the coast, but really will have no impact upon us. We could use some rain once again, as so often happens at this time of year. But over the next few days, actually over the next five days, all we're expecting are some late afternoon thunderstorms, kind of the typical summertime august weather that you see. Well, so typically around here, a ridge of high pressure throughout the eastern part of the country, fairly weak ridge because there are some clouds and some showers that have popped up in here. A couple of high pressures to talk about. This is that system moving across the Carolinas is bringing thunderstorms. This one up here moving out of Iowa gives us perhaps a better than usual chance for a thunderstorm tomorrow.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115341/file/219292#t=2999.66,3091.61"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115341/file/219292/transcript/62333/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And that's probably our best chance for the next few days. But it's not really a great prospect as things go, some cool temperatures up in eastern Canada that'll stay locked up up there. Some hot stuff down in Oklahoma and Texas. That's not going to make a strong move in our direction. The warm temperatures that we saw today into the lower 90s are going to be very typical. The next five days will be in at least the upper 80s to the lower 90s. Just the kind of weather you expect. Not a real heat wave. Typical August temperatures. Here's what the temperatures look like for tomorrow around the area. 92 degrees in D.C., 90 of Salisbury, a little cooler, of course, down at the ocean. Our downtown thermometer should peak at it 91 degrees. If we get more sunshine to the clouds, maybe a little bit higher than that. If your plants take you out in the bay tomorrow, the winds not very much of a factor. 5 to 10 knots from the north, one foot waves. Bay water temperature in the upper 70s to about 80 degrees down at the ocean. Air temperature 83 degrees, very pleasant there. Water temperature in the surf in the mid low to mid 70s and there will be plenty of sunshine for your fun down at the ocean. Mostly clear skies during the overnight. We do see some haze around now that'll be with us throughout the rest of the night. Possibly some fog forming toward dawn. Overnight temperatures, mid-sixties to lower 70s sunshine with patchy clouds tomorrow. A rather warm and humid day, we'll call it, 90 degrees, probably 4 to 5 degrees warmer downtown. And check out the fire that this was talking about. Very typical temperatures, 90 degrees, upper 80s, 85, 85, and back to the upper 80s here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115341/file/219292#t=3092.51,3179.51"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115341/file/219292/transcript/62333/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm at any time throughout the period.
