I'm Katie Larson and this is Eyewitness News Saturday morning. And I'm Tim Williams 54 degrees on your September 14th, nine days away from the end of summer, the beginning of fall. And it feels every bit of fall outside. Very brisk morning. If you haven't been outside yet, let's take you. Well, we're not going to take you outside, but we'll tell you what's outside waiting for you when you get out there. Sunny today, a lot of sunshine, clear skies. And you also have the five day forecast. So we can find out if this fall like weather is going to continue. So the five day forecast near the end of the show okay. But first here's a look at today's top story. His rap music was about guns and gangs. And this morning that very same kind of violence has silenced him forever. Tupac Shakur is dead. The 25 year old rap star died yesterday after being critically hurt last weekend in a drive by shooting in Las Vegas. Shakur attended the Baltimore High School for the Performing Arts and did his Coke. Spoke with some of those who knew him. Out of push out of jail. California, dreaming to secure one of the most successful gangsta rappers, sold millions of records, made headlines singing about violence and drugs and women. And for his repeated arrests in 1995, he spent eight months in prison for sexually assaulting a female fan. He was shot twice, first in 1994, then last Saturday. Those bullets took his life when he was 15. Tupac Shakur entered Baltimore's High School for the Arts. He was a great, great actor, and this was something that could conceivably transcend whatever he wanted to do with music. I think in many ways, the reason why his music was so powerful was because of his talent as an actor.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027#t=120.4,212.95"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027/transcript/71266/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Why are you always so mad? And I said to him, you know, you're in this business where you may be more valuable in prison. Yeah. You could even be more valuable that he, in a lot of ways, became the epitome of this new, quote unquote, gangster age. Greg Schmoke, the mayor's son, was a friend and classmate of Tupac's. I think, like, happens in the entertainment business. The myth can kill you. Just three days before he was shot. Tupac talked about why he carried a two way radio to keep in contact with the members of his posse. Today, every every young black man needs to be physically inclined and military minded. This part of the military mind, the soldiers out there, the myth can kill you. For the weekend team Denise Koch, channel 13, Eyewitness News. Tupac Shakur died of heart and lung failure. The Las Vegas attackers who shot him have not yet been caught. There are more questions than answers this morning after five people are shot on Baltimore's West Side. The attack happened on Wheeler and Calverton streets at 1:00 this morning. The spray of bullets killed one person, an unidentified 20 year old man. Four other people were also injured, ranging in age from 16 to 20 years old. All four are listed in fair condition this morning at University Hospital, and police have no one in custody. A nationwide manhunt continues this morning for a Baltimore County man charged with a bizarre crime. There's still no sign of 57 year old Richard Elliott. Police tell us Elliott held two prostitutes hostage in the basement of his Hollander Ridge home and forced them to be his sex slaves. They escaped yesterday by wriggling their hands out of chains and climbing through a window near his house. We're looking through every avenue that we can right now. We're even searching the internet, because folks who engage in this type of behavior, many times will exchange information with each other, and we're doing some searches to see if we can come up with information on Elliot. I didn't understand it because Richard was here by himself. And if he came out of the door and came in his yard, and obviously I said we'd say hello. Very nice. I never dreamed what was going on. Police say one of the victims is in stable condition this morning at Mercy Medical Center. The other was treated and released. Richard Elliott has previous rape and kidnaping convictions. So the Reds are back to one and a half games ahead of the White Sox in the race for the wild card. However, there is a little bit of bad news. The Yankees also won, so we're still three and a half games out of first place in the Al East. I just realized I was listening to the sportscaster yesterday talking about how the Orioles are three home runs. I think it's three home runs now, away from an all time team record in the in the baseball ranks. Well, you know, osteoporosis is a disease that a lot of people don't even think about until they're older. But of course, it is never too early to try and prevent it. And doctor Bill Howard, who is the chief of staff from Union Memorial Hospital, joins us with some things to look for. Thanks for joining us again, as always. Doctor Bill, we appreciate it. Thank you. SlimFast. Isn't that amazing? I'm sure you wouldn't recommend that for any snacks or otherwise. First of all, osteoporosis, a lot of people think of this as an elderly woman's disease. Is that true? Well, it is true, but it's also starts earlier than people think and really starts in the mid 30s when you begin to lose calcium from the bones. So it's never too early to take precautions about, getting osteoporosis.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027#t=1241.44,1329.93"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027/transcript/71266/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And it is it is a very dangerous disease. Well, it really is, because it leads to fracture, especially of the hip. And when you get a hip fracture at age 75, it's really serious. And people never seem to come back from that kind of injury. Okay. So what can we do then. Now. Well, there are a lot of things. You eat more calcium, at least a gram of calcium a day. Exercise is very important. Vitamin D and eat properly. People who go on these crash diets and starvation diets, begin to lose a lot of calcium. So definitely don't do that. No, that's really a bad thing to do. And it's also common among men as well. And people don't know that. And estrogen is very important. So when you become postmenopausal it's a good time to look into estrogen therapy. Now you talked about exercising. And I know that that's also very good for for even for elderly people to to lift weights. What kinds of things do you recommend. Well, whatever anyone can actively do. Excuse me. It's, it's important to be active and to maybe lift some weights, not heavy weights, but do something that exercises the muscles and whatever you do. So the thing to do is it because the muscles support the bones, but that's part of it. Nobody really knows exactly why exercise is so good, but it is known that exercise does increase the, calcium absorption, which lowers osteoporosis. That's interesting. There's also some sort of like a bone detection machine. How does that work? Well, I can't tell you how it works because it's a complicated X-ray thing. But they do have a number of tests, the Cat scans and some other, sophisticated X-ray machines. And really, I think when you get over maybe six years.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027#t=1330.59,1424.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027/transcript/71266/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So it's a good idea to go to your hospital and get this test done. We'll have a complete, AccuWeather forecast coming up in about 15 minutes. Right now we have other stories making news. That's right. Let's take a look at some of those stories right now. An age old religious ceremony has left an infant fighting for her life. This morning, the four year old nearly drowned during a baptism. It happened at the Imani Temple in Washington, DC, after the little girl was briefly immersed three times into a baptismal term. She's now on life support. The leader of the church, Reverend George Stallings, says that the church's mother insisted on the ceremony, even though that it's not encouraged in the church. Stallings founded the Imani Temple seven years ago. For African Americans who are disillusioned with the Catholic Church, they're calling it a complex ballet to save two tiny lives. That's how doctors in Salt Lake City, Utah, are describing surgery to separate. Two Honduran born twins joined at the head after a 12 hour operation. Doris and Bessie Gonzalez are both in stable condition this morning. Doctors, however, say this is only the first step. The girls are still going to need years of reconstructive surgery. Well, the doors to one California church have opened for a medical first. Well, at least they say it's a medical first. The San Francisco church now legally sells marijuana for medical purposes only. They say clients go through a tough screening process to become part of the program. The mayor's office and the Healing Alternatives Foundation are coordinating the effort, and while many people in the program are satisfied, the cost is causing concerns to be able to get a native like, cheaper, lesser, great quality at the Cannabis Club for like eight bucks. Well, it's a story with a lot of warts in it. A Florida man claims he found a frog in his Budweiser. Anheuser-Busch, which makes Budweiser, says someone tampered with this product. Michelle Cain jumps right into this story. For the time being, Anheuser-Busch is spending millions of dollars in its ad campaign using frogs to sell Budweiser beer wines. So when it came to the company's attention that a frog was found in a bottle of Bud. They took the claim very seriously. Jeff Castle lives in Orange County. He called Anheuser Busch when he says he discovered the dead frog in one of his bottles. This morning, I got up to put the rest of the beers in refrigerator and discovered a frog floating in the beer. And Jeff says he came in to this convenience store, purchased two cases of Budweiser. He walked up to the counter and the clerk didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, since it's all sealed. And the manager says nothing like this has ever happened. And I can imagine the manufacturing company will go to the bottom and we'll find out how it happened. And that's exactly what Anheuser Busch did. Representatives from Jacksonville and Saint Louis arrived at our television station last night to talk to Jeff and check out his claim. A company expert measured the diameter of the cap, and what he found was that it had been tampered with. What we know conclusively, according to our expert, is that the bottle had been opened by someone. Someone put the frog in and put the cap back on the bottle after it left our brewery. Anheuser Busch representatives say with all the quality check points at the brewery, there is no way a frog can slip into a bottle.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027#t=1734.83,1830.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027/transcript/71266/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Now, this is a case for federal authorities. Let's see this morning for a 14 year old Japanese boy who sailed by himself across the Pacific. The teenager hadn't been heard from in nearly a month, and everyone thought he was dead. But he made it to the California coast yesterday, despite the fact that his battery and his motor had both died and he had to sail without them. We promised you a beach forecast, as we will do right now. Take a quick look. Right now. It's running over here. If you're heading out to the beach, one thing you can expect is that the residual effect of Hurricane Hortense, although she is moving out of our region, is leaving us with some great surfing weather. So if you're a surfer, this is it. The swells are out there. The waves are about 3 to 4, even in some cases five feet. And of course, the further you go out, the better you are. Northwesterly winds, 10 to 20mph, 71 degrees in the water. Ocean city, of course, is going to be a little cooler than, inland, but 77 degrees, if you're anywhere from the harbor up to the Patuxent River. Northwesterly winds about 15mph. Five day forecast coming up in just about 13 minutes. Okay, terrific. But first, let's take a look at the morning's top news story. One of the most popular, controversial gangsta rappers is dead today. Tupac Shakur died of heart and lung failure after being shot last weekend in Las Vegas. Jane Wells filed this report last night, just after Shakur's death. He got. He sang about it and he lived it. A man seen in life, sometimes as a criminal. I want straight up not guilty, but in death as a crime victim. On the night of September 7th, 25 year old Tupac Shakur went to see the Mike Tyson fight. He left the match with Death Row Records chief Shug Knight and as they drove down the Vegas Strip. Police say four men opened fire, grazing night but riddling Shakur's chest with four bullet holes after remaining in critical condition all week. Just about two hours ago, he died.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027#t=2751.22,2837.05"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027/transcript/71266/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Tupac Shakur passed away at UMC at 4:03 p.m. Friday, September the 13th, 1996. Physicians have listed cause of death due to respiratory failure and cardio pulmonary arrest. To some, Shakur was all that was good and bad in rap. Fans loved the raw music. Critics complained about the raw lifestyle. Tupac was different from most when he went Hollywood. I've never seen so many black folks in one spot, and it ain't no fight. Turns out life was sometimes a lot more violent. He was shot two years ago during a robbery at a recording studio. The shooting happened just hours after he left court, wearing that blue bandana, where a jury was trying to decide if he actually raped a woman in a hotel. Tupac didn't take the prosecutor's accusation sitting down. Her job is to put black people in jail, right? People? Mexicans alike. So she couldn't possibly know what a role model would be. Jane Wells for CBS news and the Reverend Al Sharpton says he's hoping that Shakur's death will be a wakeup call to young people to stop the violence. Before his success, Tupac Shakur was a student here in Baltimore ten years ago. He attended the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts. Fellow students and teachers. Remember, Tupac Shakur is being extremely talented as both a musician and an actor. He was a great, great actor, and this was something that could conceivably transcend whatever he wanted to do with music. I think in many ways, the reason why his music was so powerful was because of his talent as an actor. In a lot of ways, he became the epitome of this new, quote unquote, gangster age. Shakira had just left the Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas when he was shot.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027#t=2837.62,2935.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136435/file/253027/transcript/71266/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, once again, Catholics around the world are offering prayers for the health of Pope John Paul the Second. The women told police that they were working as prostitutes along Pulaski Highway when Elliott picked them up, took them to his Rosedale home and held them captive in his basement. The two said that he beat them and sexually assaulted them. The women escaped naked and shackled when Elliott left the house, supposedly to go for work. He's a career criminal who allegedly kidnaped and raped two women in Baltimore County. Police have been looking for Elliott since the two women in chains escaped from his home in Rosedale Thursday night. Tonight, he's the subject of a nationwide manhunt. The women told police they were prostitutes, kidnaped by Elliott and abused in a secret torture chamber in the basement of his home. Elliott served 14 years for kidnaping and torturing a California teenager 30 years ago, was sentenced for another crime in 1985 and was paroled in 1994. He moved to Baltimore County from Long Island several months ago. The FBI is now involved because police think Elliott may have left the state, which would lead to a charge of unlawful flight. Shots are fired in West Baltimore when the smoke clears. One person is dead and four others are wounded. It happened about 130 this morning at Wheeler and Calverton streets. Police have no suspects or motive in the shooting. And who killed Tupac Shakur? The rapper was shot last Saturday. Last night he died. He became a victim of the violence he rapped about in his music. Tonight, rap fans in Baltimore are mourning the death of 25 year old Tupac Shakur. In two. So this is all just a sad story, that a moment of silence was observed for Shakur at 92 Q's Harbor Jam concert tonight. Shakur died in a Las Vegas hospital last night from wounds he received in a Drive-By shooting one week ago today. Many in the rap community hope young people learn from Tupac's experience. I think this incident that happened to Tupac should really show the world that it's serious out there with a lot of kids, a lot of people who are away from the violence and a separate and choose not to live it or not to believe what's really going on. Shakur survived being shot four times two years ago, and he served prison time for a rape conviction. Tupac Shakur attended the Baltimore School for the Arts. Some, like rapper heavy D, are calling Tupac's murder a wake up call. There are two images of the hip hop culture, one positive and uplifting, the other criminal and violent. As Chris Stanley reports, Tupac Shakur met the violent end. Rock Shakur could not believe he was dead one week after being shot four times in a drive by a check on the Las Vegas Strip, Shakur was a passenger in a car driven by Death Row Records president Marion Night. Shakur was one of Death Row Records biggest stars and was criticized, along with many of his contemporaries for their gangster rap lyrics, which some said glorified violence and degraded women. I think that. You know, there's no denying that. There's that there is a there's a point where these two things touch each other. Sakura may have reported what was happening on the streets, but so far, no one has given police solid clues about who carried out last weekend's shooting. Investigators have heard lots of theories, from gang rivalry to East Coast versus West Coast rappers. I think that somebody saw something and they should most definitely come forth and say something. I'm really shocked because nobody saw anything, but I know them saying this terrible thing. In 1994, two people were with Shakur when he was shot five times and robbed in the lobby of a Manhattan recording studio. Shakira survived the attack and even bragged about it on his latest album. The case is unsolved. Perhaps the biggest stumbling block to solving either case is the mistrust of police and authority by the rap community. I think they know, you know, they probably know what they need to know, and they're going to handle it. They're going to handle their business in their own way and in their own time. I'm not I'm certainly not surprised that they're not running immediately to the police for assistance. Shakur had talked about giving up his gangsta rap image. He told vibe magazine. So actually, the mechanism of that West Coast hurricane actually will end up giving us a bit of rain long about midweek. Interestingly enough, tomorrow though, as I mentioned, another pretty good day. Temperatures in the upper 60s in the mountains to low 70s around the Baltimore area, mid 70s or so further to the south with a bit of a breeze and low humidity. West wind on the bay 10 to 20 knots, 1 to 2 foot chop bay. Water temperature mid 70s. These days we've got a few clouds around. We'll call it clear to partly cloudy conditions. Really quite cool tonight 48 to 54. Our overnight low of course the 48 degree temperature for the distant suburbs 54 downtown and tomorrow partly sunny, breezy, cool, high temperature 72 degrees. And on the five day forecast. And Monday another cool day. But we'll start to see clouds move into the region from that system we were talking about down in the southern states, and then the chance of rain both Tuesday and Wednesday as it works its way on by, but it's still going to remain cool. Look at these temperatures 68 for Tuesday, 68 for Wednesday, 70 Thursday. Remembering that normal for this time of year in the upper 70s, it's going to be a cool five day period. But bottom line, so far as the rest of your weekend goes, tomorrow is going to be another really nice day. Very much like today. A lot of sunshine and a lot of blue skies. Patent K a pretty day. A lot of difficult road game for the Ravens as they head into the Astrodome for a matchup with the lame duck Oilers, the Oilers and the Ravens both one and one on the season. While the Ravens were losing to Pittsburgh last Sunday, the Oilers put up some big numbers in beating Jacksonville 3427. This is a situation that makes head coach Ted Marshall just a wee bit nervous.
