I mean, you had to shave. You weren't allowed to grow. Right. Okay. Clean shaven all the time. Well, this dollar, this young sailor, when he grew a beard, finally his whole life changed. I mean, take a look. Sure. Go ahead. Gavin Dorsey video, if you please. Never in a million years would this young sailor have ever dreamed he would grow up to become the spirit of Christmas. But he did. Folks, meet John Fonda. He's a sculptor, among other things. He told me he grew a beard in the 60s and it turned white in, the mid 70s, I think. And by the time I was 48, 49, I looked like the Norman Rockwell Santa Claus. John was born and raised in Gloversville, New York, the Adirondacks. And when he posed for this photo with his little camera, he couldn't have known what was in his photographic future. I asked him, how many times has he had his picture taken? Well, probably 200,000 or more commercially at Whitemarsh. Then the parents taking pictures, plus my still work and video work. Half a million. He keeps a set of photos for himself. This is his favorite Santa. I mean, John gets a lot of mail. About 6000 letters a season. His beard really fascinated me. So I asked him, Can I pull it? Sure. It's real history. So if you want to see him in person, you'd better hurry because he'll be leaving White Marsh Christmas Eve, heading out for who knows where. With a hearty Ho, ho, ho. This story. But of course, everybody knows that Santa Claus himself is busy and uses various and sundry local people to help him.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791#t=28.56,156.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791/transcript/71613/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Help him That the stuff. Only the best of the best. He was handpicked by Santa himself. The word to describe this segment this morning is sweet and sweet. 16 Mr. Dorsey video, if you please. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Danielle. Ragin. It's your birthday. You're having a birthday today. So how old are you? Four years. But technically, she was only one. She was born February 29th, 1976, and had her first birthday four years later. When she turned eight, she was really two. But when she was three, she was really 12. Very confusing, isn't it? Yeah. Well, that was Danielle then. Now she'll be 16 Saturday, I think. Or is it four? Okay. I'll be four years old on February 29th, 1992. But I'll also be 16. Now, wait a minute. How old did she say she was before? Four years. You're four years old today. Yeah. When was the last time you had a birthday? Four years ago. Yeah, four years ago. I was one. You were one four years ago? Yeah. So, really, you could still just be one now because it's February 29th. But I'm four years old. Very confusing, isn't it? Yes. My birthday only comes every four years. So she hasn't gone without, though. Every year the family celebrates, and every year she got a gift. So now that she's 16, I asked her what she wanted this year. A maxima. And what are your what is your dad say about that? No way. Well, back in 1980, Oprah told her all the city of Baltimore wants to wish you a very happy birthday. And what would you like to say to them? That you brought them. And this year, all of Baltimore again says happy birthday. Thank you. Thank you all.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791#t=156.99,291.74"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791/transcript/71613/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And that's the. You're beautiful. And your mom. Come to find out this was a world class performer, soprano, an opera star. You, born here in West Baltimore, went to Douglass High School. And well, Mr. Dorsey video, if you please. I said, my dear folks. Meet Veronica Tyler, Baltimore's own diva. What's a diva to do? I shall do what I always do. The show goes on. There you will see the stuff of which divas are made. Miss Tyler recently performed here at the You'll be play cultural Center. Her roots, she says, are in Baltimore. She was born here. As a teenager, she appeared on w a m and knew then singing would be her life. The bug hit me here and doing those early TV things. Sure. Not long after her Channel 13 debut, she appeared on CBS with Maestro Leonard Bernstein at the Young People's Concert in New York. You. Ms.. Tyler's career has included opera, oratorio, symphonic engagements and solo recitals throughout the world. I've had a full career, really full, healthy, with a healthy career, so and I've been very fortunate as well. Whether she performs at the White House, Carnegie Hall, or at a concert with the Oslo Philharmonic. The reviews are always wonderful. But we do get tired of it. I mean, it is it's difficult and it's it's a hard life. And so when you get to those moments, you say, I'm not going to do another dress rehearsal. I'm not going to wear of the costume. Could she give it up? Wouldn't she miss the audiences? In a word, could she quit? In a word. There's no business like show business. Love it. Would she quit? Not a chance. She's incredible in my voice. She performs right down the hall here in the old studio when she was a teenager.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791#t=292.06,455.63"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791/transcript/71613/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Isn't that amazing? That is how many people have come and gone and just went on to do wonderful things with their lives. The Oslo Philharmonic. And I hope you enjoy watching this. As much as I enjoy putting it together because they gave I had a wonderful and a tremendous amount of material. So Mr. Dorsey video, if you please tell me sometimes things aren't as good as they could be. Fortunately, however, when we need it, there always seems to be a couple of guys around to put a smile back on our face. The Marx Brothers did it, but Abbott and Lou Costello may even Hope and Crosby were all there when we needed them then. But now, ladies and gentlemen, we have Donnie, Scott and Marty Bass. WJC. I would miss. And there they are doing their thing from 5:30 a.m. now until seven every weekday morning. We have I talked to each one separately this week to see what I can learn. You know, the inside stuff. I asked Marty, have you been on this show for ten years? Day one, you have been day one. Don said he teamed up with Marty a little later. I took over when Oprah Winfrey left. Yeah, Oprah left and Don joined. And the ratings just went up. And when you got something good, gone, as Jimmy Durante used to say, everybody's trying to get into the act. My God. But who stole the show is a perfect blend of entertainment and information. Infotainment, infotainment, infotainment, sports, car. Infotainment is what we do. And I don't think anybody should be ashamed of. Well, how do you like that? Guess who this is. Guess who. This? Well, of course. This is Marty Bass. And this is Don Scott. Don was raised in Ashtabula, Ohio, and Marty was raised in Louisville, Kentucky.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791#t=456.56,594.35"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136788/file/253791/transcript/71613/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I asked Marty if he knew back then what he wanted to be when he grew up. Yeah. I knew from the time I was almost five years old on that I would be doing this. And Don told me early on I wanted to be a comedian, that I wanted to be a dentist. Obviously, the two were together and then I was going to be a Lutheran minister for a while. But Marty said he knew from the beginning it would be broadcasting. Yeah. I never want to do anything else. And for a while, he became Marty Ballou, the outrageous Marty Ballou at the Real Rock that we went to in New Orleans. But what he really wanted to be was a reporter. And believe it or not, Don wanted to be a weatherman. And I kept my little spiral notebook of all the highs and lows for the day and how much rain and stuff like that. And that was kind of the way I thought I would go in this business, but it never really happened. That's my cue. This piece is running out of time. So let me close now by wishing these two guys a happy anniversary. You little rascals. Well. Well. Your little rascal. You ought to have that complexion back once again. Damn hair. All right, listen, you'll be back with us next Tuesday. Yes, sir. All right. Yourself, bomber boy. You will check it out for your son, Richard, a couple minutes later.
