But that happens every year at the same time. It is now apparent that the world is getting warmer, possibly because of the greenhouse effect. Global temperatures in the 1980s were almost one degree warmer than the average for this century. The future of public radio in Maryland may turn out to be a case in point. Our vice president and general manager, Jonathan Klein explains in his Channel 13 editorial. In the spirit of Giving credit where credit's due. Here's congratulations to some fellow broadcasters for a smart idea. Over the last 20 years, some nine public radio stations have sprung up on college campuses across the state. And for the most part, they've operated on a shoestring. Now, in spite of that, they've served their communities with local programing, some of it outstanding. Unfortunately, the public radio budgets are the first to suffer cuts when supporting campuses feel the pinch. And unlike public television, radio now gets no direct state aid. The radio broadcasters have decided to pool their resources, share programing and create a statewide network of sorts. The flagship would be true radio, now funded by Johns Hopkins University. Under the new plan, the station would be licensed to the State Public Broadcasting Commission, which now only operates Maryland public television. This way, public radio could be as successful in this state as Maryland public TV. Not, however, without some direct state funding.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136058/file/252452#t=1191.7,1298.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136058/file/252452/transcript/70818/annotation/13","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Right now, that's reserved only for television. And warm up to cable. Many different types of people serve in the Maryland General Assembly. And each week of this session, George Bellman tells us who's who in the Senate or the House? Tonight, George profiles the man they call the quiet giant, said one of the younger black legislators of Troy Brailey. He's our civil rights conscience. Years ago, a newspaper man dubbed him the quiet giant West Baltimore. Senator Bradley was born in South Carolina. His mother a schoolteacher, his father a blacksmith. He came to Baltimore in the 30s, worked as a shoeshine boy and as a professor in a tailor shop before becoming a Pullman porter. It was then that he met the legendary Philip Randolph, organizer and leader of the first Black Union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Randolph took Troy Bradley under his wing. It was a natural union. Both were civil rights pioneers. I started out under my mother, who was her black militant in those days, and she did some things that was unheard of. Or she told me in 1924. She fought for equal pay for black teachers in Lee County, South Carolina. And, you know, that started me out. This is Senator Bradley's 23rd year in the legislature, and he has wielded power and influence in his quiet way, always for the poor and for labor and civil rights. Maryland's first statewide minimum wage law was his. He's full of stories about the early days of civil rights, like the time Philip Randolph refused $1 million bribe to sell out the union, sending back the money and a note saying black dignity is not for sale. Those words could have been Troy Bradley's. That's how he'd like to be remembered as a person who has given his life lackey, Philip Randolph, for his people.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136058/file/252452#t=4557.45,4682.43"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136058/file/252452/transcript/70818/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"This is Black History Month, and Senator Troy Bradley should be remembered for his role in that history. This should be more of a soothing feeling to them, knowing that this institution is under the oversight of the federal government. Last February, Baltimore federal financial reported losses of $120 million. That led to the resignation of the thrifts president and a brief run on deposits. Now, the scandal is one of over 200 institutions singled out for attention in President Bush's new bailout plan. We've got to get the system back.
