And it could be the perfect thing to help you get rid of your snow induced headache. We let Dick buy the face massager. You're watching TV. With Baltimore's most watched 6 p.m. newscast. It looks like a postcard from New England, but it's Maryland people in a winter that is breaking records right and left. And we've got weather warnings for you and traffic advisories. Misery does indeed love company. Let's head right over developed here for the big picture at the map, Bob. Am I a missouri company? I'm not sure. Here's the Baltimore area right here. You can see the precipitation is beginning to really wind down just in the last half hour or so. It's really shrinking. The amount of snow is shrinking and the intensity is really diminishing quite a bit. In fact, now we just have some light snow around the area, a few very scattered pockets of some moderate snow to our east and to our south. But for the most part, the heaviest is out of here. It continue like for a few more hours, probably cut off around nine or 10:00 tonight. Totally. Dennis. Thank you, Bob. But now they've they're starting to pack up a little bit. So if I may make a prediction here, I think there are going to be a lot of accidents tonight because conditions, in my estimation, are getting worse. Parts of Carroll County this morning looked like they were part of a storybook. Even the back roads of Baltimore City took on a beauty rarely seen here. But look under the snow and you'll find a mix of ice and slush on the roadways, slush that makes trucks head for the curb and cars careen towards bus stops. Route 97 is not too bad as you take your time. But mainly when I got in the Baltimore Ravens kind of kind of stretches. Exactly. From busted front ends on the side streets to cars that became one with the snow banks lining Charles Street. Motorists are looking for relief throughout it all. Many kids trudged off to school, a last snowball having been thrown. The snow is falling very quickly. I've only been standing outside for 5 minutes and I'm covered. Not only does it cover people, it is also covering the ground. A snow plow has just come through here. But you would hardly know it by the amount of snow cover. The weather conditions aren't there. We went out just just for something to do. Kind of gets the family together. Sure enough, all five of them. 28,000 of these shirts blanketed the East Coast during the blizzard. And since probably 1966, which is the last really bad blizzard we had. We will drive cars, become tanks, four wheel drive cars, become little front wheel drive tanks. Overall, how was today? I feel like it's not like summer time. Me too. It's only a few months away. Oh, and doesn't that look good? Now, we have talked about this before, but we will again. There seems to be a difference in perception in talking to people, you know, once you've been through the blizzard, what's, you know, six, ten, 11 inches between friends. I think people will understand that this is going to be out there sometime soon and that they'll be able to deal with it today. Dennis. Well, that's true, Mike, except that I'll tell you where I live. I notice that under the snow there was a sheet of ice and it was slippery walking. If that happens on the roads, well, it's going to be dangerous. What does I look like right now? Well, right now, people are moving at a good rate. I estimate they're probably doing 45 or 50 miles an hour, which is probably too fast for conditions, because just because you can maintain the speed without slipping out or sliding, it doesn't mean that you're necessarily going to be able to stop. And I guarantee you, if any one of these cars right here that you're seeing had to put on the brakes really quick, we'd probably see some sort of a chain reaction accident. I hope that doesn't happen. Yeah, I share your hopes. Thanks, Mike. Not on the Eastern Shore. They had about five inches of snow by this afternoon, but as much as ten inches is expected. As Mike said, a lot of the roadways are starting to ice up and get covered with snow now all around the beltway where we've had very late track of traffic volume. I can get that out. I think the Beltway 1283 is the Atlanta the Jones Falls Expressway are running fairly well, no major problems. But once again, it is getting very slick out there. The further south you go, we're getting reports on the phone and also from different car phone callers that 97 and 50 are still covered in snow. So a lot of slick conditions down in Annabelle County. It was a pretty picture in Carroll County earlier today, but the snow quickly covered the roads making driving tricky. It's the same story in Anna Randall County, where roads are also partially blanketed with snow. If you're out driving, watch for spots where slush may be turning to ice. Hired as the Colts coach in Indianapolis, only to be let go again, only to come back to Baltimore again. Art Modell, the scores twice. He gets a coach who's proven he can put together a winner on short notice and he gets a guy who connects to the old days in Baltimore. Modell's football team may be a collection of strangers, but at least there's one guy with a legitimate connection to the great moments of the past. I'm Michael, Alaska. Thank you, Michael. Well, we just talked to Bob Turk now. Yes, we sure do. Oh, you can ask me anything you like, but just wait a while. We got another sunshine scoop giving you a bright young lady up in park and ask this question. My name is Elizabeth Kate. I'm in third grade from seventh District Elementary School. My question for the Sunshine School is why is it colder in the Herefordshire than it is anywhere else in Baltimore County? Good question. We'll get to the answer just 3 minutes. Obi Wan Turk is here now with a very thoughtful explanation as to what happened. Oh, you want that now? Do we have time for that? You can do it. Basically, the storm that we was trying to form yesterday and had informed it did not form until like early this morning, six, seven in the morning, and then it exploded when hit the Atlantic Ocean, got the moisture together. So we had no really no inkling, no computer generation of the fact that the storm would be as strong as it would be for the Baltimore metro area. So we got a lot more snow. We expected a lot more snow. Anybody expected. So. What happened to the rock theory? The rock theory? You won't hear the rock there. You've got a pond. Okay, it's quiet. It's still you have a rock in your hand. You throw the rock toward the pond. Now, before it hits that pond, everything status quo is just hits upon a ripple effect. This is what happened in the atmosphere today. The ripple effect being cold air hitting the warm ocean. Current Gulfstream, things just blew up. The moral of the story is don't blame Bob. Blame the got the rock. That's right. Let's take a look. We've set records with today's snowfall. We've gone over the record for the most amount of snow in any winter at BWI at as of 4:00. We've gone over that and we've still added to that. Back in 63 and 64, we had the previous record of 51.8 inches of snow. And as of 4:00 this afternoon, we had gone up to 54.6 inches of snow. At 2:00, we had 53.1. And since 2:00, well, we've gotten another two or three inches of snow. So the more snow, the falls, the more records will be broken.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77492/file/164421#t=1625.0,1716.29"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77492/file/164421/transcript/39236/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You know, some I just left my twin over there. So moderate activity over portions of the middle and upper eastern shore in the Baltimore region. Now, let's just call it light, steady snow. And to our west, it's just cut off completely from Frederick down toward Loudon County, Virginia. It's just ending west of D.C. and it's shrinking in coverage as well. Continues to move up toward the north and northeast for Boston, Connecticut area. Rhode Island pick up 8 to 12 inches before it's all said and done. And that's pretty much where we're looking at in the middle part of the state of Maryland from D.C., Prince George's County up through Baltimore seashore, northern section of the eastern shore. Believe it or not, there's another chance of a little bit of snow coming in tomorrow night, early Sunday, as this low drifts on by. It doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with. Her schedule kept her out of the line of sight of our camera early today, but guaranteeing her presence as a board chair at future meetings is still an issue before the board. I think we're going to have to seriously deal with, number one, the issue of Mr. William Gibson. The most dramatic images of this evening's train crash in Silver Spring captured by an amateur photographer. Moments after the head on collision, a fireball flies into the air and at least 12 people are left dead. The latest reports indicate the marked commuter train was stopped on the track when the Amtrak Capital Limited slammed into it in the snow and the darkness they collided, causing injury and death. We have team coverage. And we begin with the crash itself. The night team stands under as begins our team coverage live from Silver Spring with the latest. I can tell you this, today's every day passengers board the Capital Limited, which is bound to Chicago from D.C. today, 175 people got on that Amtrak train. And every day there are a lot of local passengers who bought the mark train that was mentioned a moment ago to ride from Frederick, Maryland, somewhere in between there and Washington, D.C.. But so far in this terrible tragedy, at least a dozen people dead. And at this count, two dozen injured. It's a terrible, terrible tragedy that could have been a whole lot worse. Tonight. A spokesperson for the Maryland Transit Administration says a mock commuter train was being pushed towards Washington's Union Station but had stopped north of the D.C. city limits. That's when an Amtrak locomotive allegedly crashed head on into several more train local passenger cars. Witnesses who live in an apartment building 50 yards from the track told Eyewitness News they just can't see. We heard the biggest explosion I've ever heard. Screaming, hollering. Did you hear? Montgomery County fire and rescue officials report at least 12 deaths so far. Maybe more. All on the mark train that runs the Brunswick line in between Frederick, Maryland and Washington, D.C. It would sound like thunder or whatever. And and I looked out my window and I saw all these flames. A mach train spokesperson said tonight, quote, unquote, we were having switching problems. Meantime, this man says he just happened to be looking out of his window when the crash occurred outside of his apartment building. It's the moment I heard the explosion and the fireball bring up all this time that people were talking about Oklahoma, Atlanta and Oklahoma City. You know, Oklahoma City, I turn back and this explosion made me think about it. And I can hear people making noise, a lot of screaming and noise like that. Pretty chaotic. And then people started running from the apartment building trying to climb up the hill in the snow to see what they could do to help. Most of them would say they woke up. I think they were just waiting to find out what was going to happen from that point, because this was early. This is when the vehicles were just coming in. We are told that at least some of those who were discharged from the hospital were taken to a local school, Blair High School, where they were going to be offered counseling. A federal fact finder looks over the cab of the demolished Amtrak engine cause they're out there trying to find out. There are some things which are known. The Mark train, pushed by a Brunswick line engine number 73, took the brunt of the damage. Part of what was once the corner of the market. Passenger car lies 100 feet from where it should be torn apart by the front of the Amtrak engine. Those who perished did so in the passenger car behind this Amtrak mail car that you see what the investigation is taking in the entire accident scene. My question is, it seems to me that you have been able to confirm then that the dead were in the MARC train car, passenger car, is that correct? Yes. We had heard this late tonight from one of the media briefing areas that the 11 people were from the MARC train, which was, of course, the Brunswick Line, not one of the trains which goes into Baltimore and it's 11 were in the car and one was thrown from the wreckage, actually. I see. All right, Mike, when do they expect to actually determine the cause? Well, it's going to be a pretty tough thing to really guesstimate that. No one is willing to say that right now, because this is kind of like when you see airline accidents, they take all their facts and some things that they pop up. Initially, they'll release those, but otherwise they're going to be hearings down the road months away before we really have the cause pinpointed. Okay, very quickly, because I know we're short on time. I understand there is something like a black box in a train that will ultimately give them some information. Yes, I think it is much less sophisticated than the kind which are used for airliners. But I was made aware of that fact as well today. It's becoming a familiar tune around here. The my name's Dennis Edwards is watching road conditions. He's in Woodbury with an update on city streets. Dennis. Well, the thick the good news is the snow is finally stopped, at least for a little while. Highway officials tell us that after a day of plowing and salting, most major roads, the interstates are in pretty good condition. They'll spend most of the night plowing snow side streets, if you will. That means most of us must still be very careful tomorrow. It wasn't too bad. I drove a little slower than I would normally drive. I was real careful. Most commuters had a scenic and relatively quick return home. Tonight, a major contrast to early morning rush hour. Most of the snow lay peacefully on tree limbs and danced in a sometimes swift breeze. There is little on major highways tonight and even less expected tomorrow. I was surprised at rush hour. There really wasn't any traffic. The other side of the beltway was backed up but not coming west. I think the main street should be cleared and there's a lot of side streets we just can't get to because our equipment doesn't fit them. But I think if they're just careful, if they're going to go somewhere to more claim for a little more time, be patient. They might have to do a little shoveling. This stuff is different from the snow that fell earlier this year in the blizzard of 96. It has a lot more moisture in it. The reason that causes problems for drivers is that when you plow it, sweep it or push it out of the way, it glazes over into ice. It's certainly concerned with the possibility of icing tonight.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77492/file/164421#t=4451.3,4541.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77492/file/164421/transcript/39236/annotation/45","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We're going to keep crews throughout the night, probably into tomorrow, keeping those roadways clear of ice. Well, again, a head start but happened his. And of course, most of us all of us are trying to get a head start on this stuff. But it's more difficult, if you will, for local governments because the stuff is expensive. The city tells us this winter wonderland will cost about $12,000 a day. Denver Speaking about cost, how much do you think or how much do you think the salt supplies will be holding out until the spring thaw? Well, I'm told by state highway officials they've got 150,000 tons of salt, more than enough for this particular storm. Hopefully, we won't have to determine exactly whether or not they'll be able to use it later on. Hopefully, this is it. But I'm told by Bob, we have to look out and see what else is coming back. That is a good thing to do. Okay. Thanks a lot, Dennis. We're told that 400 city employees are still out working to clear the roads tonight. But one note, the snow plows won't be able to get to some streets because they're just simply too narrow. It's not the same salt they used in margaritas, is it? I probably lot. He refused to be interviewed tonight, but his state secretary spoke for him. I think it needs to be said to America and to Baltimore that Dr. Gibson's commitment to the CPA and to the civil rights in general is far more important than than what one would perceive and what has been given to the media. And I think the fact that the man has decided not to seek reelection should be his choice and that it should be taken just as that that he chose not to seek reelection.
