The men heard the noise and ran upstairs to lock themselves into a bedroom. And police say the gunman followed them upstairs and fired a bullet through the door. The gunman then left without stealing a thing. Residents weren't hurt. Police have no idea. No motive for the home invasion. You could see it something like a crowbar, like type object. Force the glass part of the door inward where he could reach his hand down and unlocked the lock switch on the door knob itself. And by ringing the bell, my mother thinking that the door was locked. She opened the door and that way he could force access into the house. The women told police they gave the robber less than $100 in cash after he received the money. She threatened to go outside and struggle with him in Hallowell for help, so he fled the scene. It's a quiet little street off Sinclair Lane, where most neighbors know one another and where many people have obviously installed home security systems. Think about adding more bars on the floor windows and a new date bulletin system up there where no one can pry into entry into the house. As for a description of the suspect. The big national story this morning, President Clinton faces a weekend of intense preparation for Monday's grand jury testimony or appearance. Bill Plante looks at the pitfalls that may await the president. Only two and a half days now until the president testifies before the grand jury and the White House is a cone of silence. But the president and his advisers are discussing what Mr. Clinton will tell the grand jury. And one option being floated this morning is to have Mr. Clinton admit to sexual encounters with Monica Lewinsky, but to say that he was still telling the truth when he denied last January that he had had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky. How he would say that denial was based on the definition of sexual contact, which was used in the Paula Jones case when he gave that testimony. One thing is for certain. Only the president and his lawyers know what he'll say. And as he goes into his testimony, there are still some key facts which the president does not know. First, did anyone actually see the president and Monica Lewinsky in a compromising situation? Sources tell CBS News one uniformed Secret Service agent told a coworker that he did see something, but that's not the same story he's telling to the grand jury.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136710/file/253418#t=612.2,712.79"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136710/file/253418/transcript/71551/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Another major question what, if anything, is on the dress which Lewinsky turned over to prosecutors? Starr's office is keeping that information as close to the vest as possible. And according to his allies, he doesn't plan to share the test results with the president's lawyer. The president promised two weeks ago that he would testify truthfully and completely. But if he adopts the strategy of saying that he did have sexual contact with Monica Lewinsky, he could be seen as being too clever by half. This has all the appearance of a classic trial balloon to see what public reaction will be. Bill Plante, CBS News, the White House. Thank you, Bill. A woman from the president's past is making news this morning. Paula Jones has a new look. You may notice one of her most recognizable features is not so prominent anymore. In an interview with the National Enquirer, she says that Jones says that she had her nose done by a New York plastic surgeon. Jones is proud of her new business and would not say a word about what's going on with the president and Monica Lewinsky. And here's a story of one dog, one lucky pooch. A dog in Florida spent several days at sea after her owners were knocked overboard into the Gulf of Mexico. The owners were rescued by the Coast Guard after spending 21 hours on the water. But Coco, a three year old mix chow, floated around aimlessly in the boat for four days. Yesterday, Coco was found by some fishermen. In Nairobi, Kenya this morning, there was a changing of the guard in place of the armed sentries. There were songs at the spot where terrorism struck one week ago. The healing began. Allan Pizzi has more than almost a week ago to the minute after the bomb went off, Kenyan women came to lay wreaths and pray at the small cairn of rubble that has been left as a memorial to the dead. They asked America to help them. This is what we see in front of us, is nothing but death, death threats to our people. A few yards away, the FBI is hard at the dirty and tedious job of trying to find out who brought that death here. Much of the rubble has been shoved around so much it is almost impossible to make sense of it. That doesn't mean there are no clues. Anything that could be from the truck believed to have carried the bomb is of special interest. Agents think they have found at least part of it. The job is all theirs. Now, the Fairfax County team that helped search the embassy and the ruined building next door is packing up now. But not everything will go. We left medical supplies. We left a truck, food, paper towels, toilet paper, that kind of thing. Such gestures will go at least a small way towards modifying the image many Kenyans have that America cared more about the embassy than them. Whatever is rebuilt here, if anything, this place has already become a shrine. And for thousands of Kenyans, no Friday will pass without it bringing back a painful memory. Allen Percy, CBS News, Nairobi. A new government study finds that a significant number of our nation's high school teens take part in risky behavior. Researchers for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that nearly 1 in 5 teens mix alcohol and driving or carrying a weapon. One third of the teens surveyed had sex in the preceding three months, and only 56% use condoms. Good morning, Jane. Well, this will indeed be a medical first. Doctors at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center are attempting to regenerate a missing bone in an injured man's thumb. Raul Murcia lost part of his left thumb in an industrial accident. Now, doctors managed to save a few bone cells and we'll try to grow him a replacement bone. The work is being done by Dr. Charles H. Vacanti at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Now, several years ago, Dr. Vacanti grew tissue in the shape of an ear on the back of a mouse. But until now, nothing similar has been tried in humans. This morning, doctors will take Mr. Mursi his own bone cells and inject them into a scaffold surgically implanted where his new bone will grow. As his own bone cells develop, the scaffold will melt away, leaving a new living thumb bone in its place. The ultimate goal for the patient is to have normal function in the system, to be able to use system in his work and in daily activities. The surgery will take about an hour and if successful, in about three months. Dr. Vacanti and his team will operate again to attach the tendons and ligaments to the new bone, which will allow him to use his thumb normally. Jane sounds like science fiction and will tell us why this is such high tech, such an advance. Well, certainly skin has been done before and cartilage has been tried, but no formed structural element of the body like a bone has ever been attempted. And if this works, it opens the door to help patients who have lost bones either to injury or to something like tumors. So it would be a major advance in tissue engineering and bone tissue technology.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136710/file/253418#t=1431.36,1536.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136710/file/253418/transcript/71551/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Definitely, Sanjay. A study coming out later today at the University of Maryland Medical Center links fishermen's memory problems to a one celled microorganism that kills fish. Elizabeth Cohen explains for us. First, fishermen in Maryland started noticing strange lesions on fish in the Chesapeake Bay. Then they started to have strange symptoms of their own. I just forget stuff. I mean, even from working at work. From working on some. So I have stopped sometime. Right? Know what I'm doing in from afar? Go and forget what I was even doing there at home. And. Now, a newly published study shows that these men weren't just imagining things. Brain scans showed that the fishermen suffered actual damage. The three scans up at the top of the screen are normal.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136710/file/253418#t=1793.34,1886.01"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136710/file/253418/transcript/71551/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The ones at the bottom are of the fishermen on the scans of the individuals below. You can see a lot more yellow areas, and these yellow regions are suggestive of hyper metabolic activity or hyper excitability, and that can lead to memory and learning problems. Doctors strongly suspect that a microorganism called Wisteria is to blame. It produces a powerful toxin. What we have here is a toxin that has a very interesting effect on the central nervous system where it actually can interrupt the the learning process in humans. Not only were the brain scans abnormal, also were results of some cognitive tests. For example, the fishermen in the study were asked to read the colors of the print in a list like this one. Yellow, green, red, black and ignore the actual words. They had a harder time with this test compared to people who had not been exposed to hysteria. The good news is that 3 to 6 months after the fishermen stopped working in the infested waters, their brain function went back to normal. And the researchers at the University of Maryland say fish eaters have nothing to worry about, nor do swimmers. It takes hours of repeated exposures day after day to really affect the brain. And now the infested waters are required to be posted with signs telling people to stay away. Elizabeth Cohen, CNN, reporting. Well, this particular reference book has all the elements needed for a hit. New stars, a big budget and controversy. This dictionary is not afraid to boldly go where no dictionary has gone before. It's been six years and $5 million in the making. The New Oxford Dictionary of English has 350,000 words, 2000 of them brand new. This is the first dictionary in 70 years that's been written entirely from scratch. So what made the cut? Words from the internet like cyberspace and loyal web speak for a laugh out loud. There's also mouse potato, someone who spends way too much time in front of their computer. And then there are some new British words that might have Americans scratching their heads. Words like for that's something someone says to show appreciation for an attractive member of the opposite sex. The reason why four and I add words like that a new labor game is that there is plenty of evidence that they're in use. And they seemed it seemed worth while to try and explain them. Should any High court judges need a little help? But then there's the most controversial addition of all. The dictionary says it's okay to split infinitives. As in Captain Kirk's famous to boldly go instead of the more proper to go boldly. Now that's caught people's attention. So go boldly, India. What? What does it matter? Well, I guess into English. Those that are really particular about their English, it would matter to them, but they really don't really care and matter to them. I don't think a language should be too precious like it is in France. I like it to be creative and evolving all the time. Does it really matter? I don't know. But Kelly Lin has the answer in this morning's Medical minute. Good morning. Everyone knows losing weight means cutting the fat. But if you've just made the decision to do that, don't go cold turkey. Making a gradual transition will help you avoid those horrible food cravings. Ohio State University researchers recently did a study involving 25 men. They gave the men shakes made with either whole or skim milk every day for one week. Those who had the shake with skim milk consistently consumed more fat during the rest of the day. They didn't know the fat content of their lunch, but they consciously chose foods that balanced out their fat intake. So if you want to lose weight, cut the fat, but do it slowly. It's better to eat a little fat earlier in the day so you won't have a severe craving later. I'm Kelly Lin and that's your medical minute. And settle for any kind of milkshake at the moment. Exactly.
