Yeah. Yeah. But this. And then they had this character, and if I could talk about him, I would, but I won't. Suzanne. He was the regional salesman for this toy distributor where I work and just count to ten for me. Like you in your normal voice, I get a sound level one to little fashion, man. I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. All right. That's a big boy. One more time. Mary had a little lamb. Mary had a little lamb. Mary had ten little lambs. One, two, three, four, five, six, eight. And. Now, first off for me, I want you to pronounce your name. Okay, John. So, like I say, John Sole, because most people cannot pronounce Slug. So. Right, John. So right now, spelled J, AA and SLG. All right. You are. What is your title here at the vice president of operations at Pump Pain. And it is pronounced Pompeii. Pompeii. And it is the company is Pompeii. An oil company official is Pompeii Incorporated. But a lot of people refer to as Pompeii, an olive oil company. And again, you are your title. I'm vice president of operations. And you've how long have you worked here? Well, I started here in 1965. The company was sold eight years later in 1973. And then I've been here since. So you started in 65 and then left? No, I still work with them. They were owned by the National Brewing Company. The company was owned by National Brewing Company. They sold a company in 1975, and the new owners retained me. But actually, you've been here since 1965. That's correct. So I'll ask you again. You started working here, went 1965, in September, as a matter of fact.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136856/file/253868#t=2.24,143.95"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136856/file/253868/transcript/71682/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So you you're a man day. Why don't you find something you like to stick with it on? Well, like, it's interesting. It's many duties. We all wear many hats. It's a very live, active business, operational. I have duties that give me staff functions. I have duties that give me line functions. So there's never a dull moment. You have a very responsible job here for pop, and I like to think so. It's I'm in charge of production. Anything that takes place within the four walls and the production areas, as well as purchasing and certain personnel functions. You're not from this area, though, are you? No, I'm not. I guess my history is such. I was born in Estonia during the war in 1940. My family left Estonia to escape the Communist in 1944. During the war, we escaped into Germany. We lived in Germany till 1951, when we were sponsored by people in Minnesota. And they sponsored us and gave us my father a job and we moved to the United States. And when you all come to the Baltimore area about a year and a half later, 1952, 1951, is one of the moved the United States. And 1952, we came to Baltimore. My father wanted to maintain our roots, keep in touch with the Estonian language and culture, and that was a larger part of the community of Estonians in Baltimore. And that was was his reason for coming here somehow with that background. Somehow you managed to get involved with as a teenager, you became very famous. Well, I don't know if I was famous, but traveling all over the country, I had a lot of exposure, put it this way. I was working for a home improvement company. People will purchase it. So they came out with a barber shop and one of the owners had previously as a child, had a similar toy like it. They modified it, came out with it. I was there. They put me on a plane, sent me to Seattle, Washington, Los Angeles, Cleveland to appear on the television shows, to do demonstration at department stores, toy schools, five and ten cent stores. Things like this. Run contacts, record hops just to get any kind of exposure for the toy before the fad would drop by. But you did travel all over the country. I did travel all over country as an 18 year old, but they just didn't select you to do this. I mean, you were the champ. You were good. You were better than most other people. Correct? Absolutely. That's strictly from practice. I had the opportunity to practice, and I enjoyed doing it. I mean, was it some kind of a skill that that only you possessed or. No, I'd say it was it was a toy that took a little bit of concentration, hand-eye coordination. And if you stayed with it long enough, most people were able to master it. Maybe not to the level that, let's say, I had. But it really was. I never consider as a great skill. It's just a fun thing and repetition like anything else. But you are the champ. I was a champion. Somewhat. Not really self-proclaimed. We did have a small contest. And in my travels, as the toy became more and more popular and more and more people did it. I was still, let's say my skill level because of the longevity of practice, was still maybe better than the others.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136856/file/253868#t=265.72,375.99"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136856/file/253868/transcript/71682/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But I understand there was something unique about the way you did it. You, I have been told, are ambidextrous, somewhat die. I always played. I played a lot of sports. So I tried to utilize both side, Both hands. And when you demonstrate six, eight hours a day with one hand becomes boring, becomes tired. So I learned to switch hands and try to do it with both hands and get a little variety. But you did it with both. Did it with both hands. And you did that. You did a demonstration at the at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center. That was a big demonstration. Jack Wells, who was a radio television personality in Baltimore, hosted that. And we did a demonstration there. And I think if you call it we had the biggest bubble up in the world and it was the size of a five gallon bucket. And I did that just once, and I wasn't going to press my luck anymore with it. You know, that has been, what, 59, 50? That was 1958. So 58, 68, 78, 88. That's 35 years or 35 years ago, almost to the date. Just one more question. Okay. I. Are you married? Yes, I'm married. Have a family. I have two daughters. They're grown. My oldest is 26. She's works as a dietician at Saint Joseph Hospital and my youngest one has just started graduate school at University of Alabama. Do they know you are a Bible of charm? That was made clear to them by my friends years back, and every once in a while they kid me about it. Have they ever seen you perform? Yes, I have. Come. Command performance. Well, all right, then. For. For the now, then. Staff at Channel 13, we're requesting a command performance. I will put on my hat if you want to call it on up. Get out there and try to demonstrate. Deal basic what the Bible was all about. One thing led to another. And. That's I guess that's how trees grow from. But that is Germany. This Germany here. This is German. My parents really didn't have anything to bring out of Estonia, and they escaped so fast. A sister had a few photographs, but they don't really.
