Hello, Dan Scott has the afternoon off. Four months ago, Nelson Mandela was in a South African prison. Today, he's at the White House starting his official visit to the nation's capital with a visit with President Bush. When Nelson Mandela met this morning with President Bush and later in the day with Secretary of State Baker, there will be none of the celebratory atmosphere that characterized his earlier stops in New York and Boston. The deputy president of the African National Congress views this as a working visit, as he made clear during his arrival ceremony yesterday. And I come here. Support the message that sanctions must be intensified. And of course, to ask for resources. So at that time we could be able to address. Appropriate. Which are facing our country today. This is a message Mandela is sure to deliver forcefully to the President, Baker and members of Congress as he lobbies to keep U.S. economic sanctions against South Africa in place. There will be other messages, including his call for the U.S. to stop aiding rebels waging a war against the Soviet and Cuban backed Angolan government and independent countries. They should respect the political sovereignty and territorial integrity of Angola, and no assistance should be rendered to stop it. Mandela's public support for Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat will undoubtedly be discussed as well. Members of Congress are hosting a dinner tonight at the Capitol for Mandela, and tomorrow he will address a joint session of Congress.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136105/file/252530#t=140.02,280.43"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136105/file/252530/transcript/70844/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And on Wednesday, Mandela travels to Atlanta, where, among other things, he'll attend a wreath laying ceremony to Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Grave. Do you know who he is? Yeah. Who is Mr. Mandela? Can you tell me? My mother's leader. The people leader. One of the main subjects Mandela will push with President Bush is continued sanctions against the White ruled South African government. The US passed legislation in 1986 imposing economic sanctions on the apartheid nation. Our 13 background file shows that they include a ban on all new public and private loans and investments in South Africa. US imports of South African minerals and other products are prohibited, as are US exports of petroleum products, nuclear technology, computers or software. A growing number of black parents say subjects taught in the city schools continue to be heavily weighted toward a European view, and they continue to downplay contributions of blacks and other minorities. A newly developed radio isotope test will show if the employee has used drugs any time in the past 60 days. Anything from marijuana to cocaine and more. For better or worse, the testing program here is on the cutting edge. And someday soon, programs like it could be springing up in offices and factories across America. At Harrah's, the house is bitterly divided. More than 150 employees signed this protest last week. Others who did not sign are angry, too. The local hotel union, which does not represent Harrah's workers, fears the testing program will spread. Anything connected with the war on drugs is automatically justified nowadays. And that was apparently enough for President Bush, who agreed to ask Congress for continued sanctions against South Africa. But this afternoon in Congress, there was new evidence that some may not be so easily convinced. Republican Representative William Down Maya reacted to Mandela's association with people like Colonel Gadhafi of Libya. Nelson Mandela is no Martin Luther King. He is more like H. Rap Brown or Willie Horton. Even some of Mandela's staunchest congressional supporters were today saying they wish he hadn't made the recent statements about Arafat. For the past 20 years, a coalition of anti-apartheid groups has been pushing to convince the city to divest its pension fund money from companies that do business in South Africa. Team coverage appointed. Debbie Ride explains Today It's not unusual to hear talk of South Africa in this West Baltimore church. He cannot alone think that he's going to overturn apartheid. A coalition of anti-apartheid groups often meets at St Gregory, the Great Church, to discuss things like trying to keep South African steel out of Baltimore subway and candlelight vigils at city hall. But the issue the group really sunk its teeth into was the city's divestment of pension funds. In fact, the whole question of whether the city should divest its $1 billion pension fund from companies that do business in South Africa turned into a long, drawn out debate. But the message that Baltimore citizens and many of them and only a small representation, is represented here, including native South Africans who live in this country and live in this city, became actively involved in the faith process of believing that people organized can make a difference. After much wrangling and city Council wide divestment bill was passed, but some thought it might be unconstitutional. So the city took it to court where the bill was upheld. But then some wanted to take it all the way to the Supreme Court. The board of trustees decided not to pursue the case to the Supreme Court, and some intervening parties did ask the Supreme Court to review, but the Supreme Court declined. That's what I've never heard of. It's been the weather out of the trip. Wow. It was a gorgeous day to day. What about all those clouds of blue in this afternoon? Are they portent of any? No. No. Those clouds came because of cold air aloft. The same thing happened yesterday and same thing happened Saturday. A few showers popped up for us. Just a few clouds all day. Now it's drying out. Warmer air is coming aloft. In fact, it's going to warm up to the end of this week to above normal temperatures. Right now around the region, temperatures are just wonderfully comfortable. Our high did get to 80 at the airport after morning, low 59. Some of the suburban areas got down to the low 50s. Plenty crisp this morning in many sections. Normal is 85 for tomorrow. Normal low is 64. So we're still into some pretty nice temperatures. Normally speaking, 76 at the beach right now, 76 and over 80 at wallops. So nine cells by southerly winds, 7 to 14 on the bay tomorrow. Bay one, a temperature about 72. The ocean is only about 62 degrees. So still a bit on the chilly side, but I think it's going to warm up to the end of the week. As temperatures warm up, we'll have a bit of a of coastal flow up the coast and some of that warmer water down the Carolinas, which near 70 will be heading up the coast. Yesterday, Lubbock set their all time high with 110 degrees. But the apparent temperature with humidity at only about 8 or 9% was about the same. So it was wasn't any hotter. It didn't feel any hotter in Lubbock than it did in Phenix, even though it's a lot warmer out there. No, it's been hot out west, but for the east, with the real lucky, the flow generally out of the north, as you can see it coming from a big area of high pressure out west. All the warm air stays out west. The cooler air from Canada has had a chance to move down along the East Coast, out further in the Atlantic Ocean, a little area of low pressure developing, bringing some moisture right along the East Coast coming up. So we do have partly cloudy skies, but clear skies generally will be the rule overnight tonight thanks to area of high pressure that's sitting over our region. The program is the Maryland Aids Insurance Assistance Program starts July 1st and will be funded for at least two years. Also tonight, kids and running. Is it okay for a child to run a ten K race? That question came up when one of Jay-Z's own John Byron set off for the Constellation race with his five year old daughter, Sarah. Keep in mind, Sarah had been running with dad for the past year. You want to do the ten K? And I said, okay. And we got out there a mile, two miles, three, you know, two, two and a half miles. And I said, Honey, do you want to turn around? Because we can turn around, run back and just make it five. She said, No, I want to do the whole thing. But is it safe for kids to run these distances? Dr. Hugh Boger at Children's Hospital says you should keep a few things in mind. Certainly the child can jog. What we see with children is their cost of jogging. The amount of energy they have to expend is higher than an adult. In essence, when children play, their bodies are less efficient than adults, so they burn more oxygen and use up more energy. The children are at somewhat higher risk for heat cramps and even heat exhaustion. What this means is you have to watch the child very, very carefully.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136105/file/252530#t=3736.87,3827.56"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136105/file/252530/transcript/70844/annotation/37","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"How do you know when you have had too much? You never know. We know that. We did. Okay. That's why if you supervise children all day long, like these counselors at Shady Spring day camp, you have to gauge when it's time for them to take a rest. But by and large, everyone here uses common sense. You take taking consideration of whether, number one, if it's too hot, the humidity is high. You have to spend not more than 15 or 20 minutes with these youngsters in the hot sun. The other thing is an indication is when they start complaining about needing a lot of water to drink, that's a true sign of dehydration. They get to know the children after you've been working with them for a while. You know what they can handle and what they can't handle. So kids will generally stop if they're too tired. Definitely. Want to do this one more time? Yes. How about two more times? Go for it. I think you have to pay attention to the early warnings, replenish thirst, and even more than an adult child has to work into it gradually, because sometimes while they may have the same warning signs, they tend to ignore them more than we would. They just want to keep running and running and running. So again. The key is replenish the liquid. I think that was the biggest thing. They can get dehydrated, not even know it. And if they're going to start running marathons, start gradually, take it a little at a time to try to build those little legs running that I hope John's daughter says he's going, let's keep going. And in his commentary tonight, Michael Lester wonders exactly what the court had in mind regarding professionalism, how to charge high fees without blinking an eye, perhaps flawed or not just joking, of course, once upon a time, if you talked about attorneys and professionalism, you assumed they meant knowledge of the law, how to question witnesses, how to convince a jury their client was innocent even when they knew he was not. Times change and so do concepts of professionalism. Maryland Bar Association, keenly aware of much public distaste for attorneys, went to the Court of Appeals and suggested they require lectures and workshops on professionalism for new lawyers. We can only imagine what this might entail in the modern context. Perhaps a workshop in convincing a prospective client he has a legitimate lawsuit even when he does not. And then a follow up course on convincing the other side's attorney to settle out of court so that nobody has to work. But almost everybody profits while the added, of course, on method acting might apply for those attorneys who intend to advertise their abilities. Past politics have taken a back seat as Americans across the country open their hearts and pocketbooks to Iran during its time of need. Andrea Koppel reports. Here in Baltimore, the Red Cross is in charge of organizing this city's relief efforts. It's been four days since an earthquake registering between 7.3 and 7.7 on the Richter scale shook northern Iran. An estimated 50,000 people lost their lives, while 200,000 others were injured. But unlike more recent disasters like the San Francisco earthquake and Hurricane Hugo, Iran says it doesn't need any more blood from the American Red Cross. What it needs is hard, cold cash. We're looking for checks that are made out to American Red Cross earmark Iranian relief, and then that money will go to the affected area, which is important because it'll help rebuild the economy of an obviously total devastation and get that economy back on its feet while meeting the needs of those people. In order to meet those needs, staff members at Baltimore's Red Cross have been trying to spread the word to interested callers that the best way to help is with money. The current issue of Life magazine tells the story of Poe, his life, his death and his admirer, who for 41 years has left a bottle of cognac and three red roses at his grave. Last January 17th, a remote controlled, low light camera operated by a light photographer and witnessed by Poe. House officials captured this moment. Some say Chase Jackie O. Not this fan of Poe. Well, today, Poe House curator Jeff Jerome agreed to meet me and discuss what will certainly be a hot topic this week. But for the most part, the eastern half of the United States is cloud free tonight. Take a look at some storms developing. Look how everything's in the west is rotating around a huge area of high pressure. So it's being blocked. Everything kind of rotating around and the winds coming out of the east give the deserts very, very warm, warm readings as they come down the mountains and really heat up. And that's going to bring in a little bit more humidity and more heat from the south and southwest.
