They've had 21.5, 21.6 actually total since the storm began. The heavy drifting on the runways will keep BWI closed through noon tomorrow. Hi, bud. Hey, man, I can hear you this time. I'm standing here with a man impersonating Santa Charlie. You he has a house right here on York Road. He holds up to our kneecap. So, what's it like out here? Well, it's cold, it's deep, and it seems to be drifting today. Yeah. Are you are a little area. It's just a shovel with wide. I wonder how long it's going to take for this to fill back up. Well, it filled up since yesterday. I shoveled it out last night, and today it was covered over completely before Charlie here, York Road. He's home free, but between here and York Road. You about how much snow? Well, probably about 6 or 8ft. Piled about four feet high. And unfortunately, it freezes because of the salt in it. So it, it's pretty tough to shovel through you. You pick your way through that yourself and just about so. So if you want to, you could go be about today. Not that that's a good idea, but, how long is going to take you to clear all this? Probably take me about an hour and a half to shovel, an opening for the driveway. And when you start. Oh, yeah. Probably after the snow stops. There you go.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=110.71,195.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71243/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Good luck. And, what do we see here today? Jane? Paige, how are you? Good. How are you? You know, Jane, is not from around these parts, so this. I don't know if I'd call this normal, but how does this compare to where you're from? Oh, this is. This is pretty a pretty good storm for even for Boston. And they're getting a lollipop there, too. Yeah. Yeah. So. So tell me about, your mode of transportation, cross-country skiing. It's only way to get around that. I can see snowshoes might help, too. It's pretty deep. No, you don't have those? No, no, I wish I did. I was gonna say if you did, I might, negotiate with you to borrow for a while. Hey. What? Tell me what your road is like. And what's your guess as to when you're ever going to get out of here? I don't know, I just was on my way to get some baby food at the Royal Farms because, it doesn't look like they're going to be a car. No, cars are passing by, and, it's bank to bank snow. There's no not even an indentation anymore as to where they had plowed once. Yeah. Eli is her, is or is her son and whether he's nine months. No, eight months. So. No, you. Come on. You didn't get the whole hype and the whole hordes, and you weren't out at the giant earlier to get all that baby food. Now, my husband was there, actually. He likes squash and applesauce. You heard there snow plows in squash and applesauce, and we'll do it. Thank you, James, for stopping by. Anything else you all need to know there? Well, well, that's what I point out. That you're not wearing those goggles because you're trying to be cast in the Fox TV show space above and beyond, because of the blowing and drifting snow. Oh, you know, I can't tell you that I can, I'm layered pretty well here, outside. And, so I'm staying out of the people going inside to the super fresh air, the Royal farms, because, just to get warm. But I'm more comfortable staying out. But if I didn't have these goggles on, I took them off for a couple minutes. It's just so irritating outside. I couldn't be that way. And now it's not that gusty. But sometimes, as you said, 40 miles an hour, it just rips right through you. Yeah. Does. All right. Mike, are you with us live? Mike, you may want to keep your earpiece in and listen to this. So the ice Raiders are trying to do their job to keep the boats clear of ice formation within the basin. Okay, now you say ice eaters. What's that? It's, it's a motor. Either a half horsepower or three quarter horsepower that has a fan on it. That just kind of blows the water. It's in the water, and it, keeps it circulating so that the boats don't freeze in the ice. Okay. Similar to a bubbler, but exact. Yeah. Okay. Some people call it a bumper, which is how you keep the water from freezing at the surface. How do you how do you keep warm inside the cabin from the heat up? Do you even use it? Got a good heater? You know, well, our reverse cycle, which is very similar to, it's called marine air. And what he does is it takes the heat out of the water like a heat pump does. The air, however, that is now off. It's cold enough now that you can't use that. We have built in baseboard heaters. Nice boat. Okay. So and we have a couple. We have one small heater that, rotates. That's electric. If you know someone who has a gun, that should call 911. No one else will know you call. Keep silent and you may end up that way. Weather with fog. Talk today at five. Am and now with more coverage of the blizzard of 96. Here's Don Scott and Marty band. All right. 920 in the morning. It is a cold, blustery morning. The, I just wanted to say that special weather statement came over its same one that a while back. We're keeping a winter weather advisory in effect today because of blowing and drifting snow. It is, it is quite chilly in the area right now. It is a 22 degrees BWI windchill of minus seven. Had a gust BWI, up to 30 miles an hour. Blowing and drifting snow is going to be a real problem today. Can we take a look at the AccuWeather five day forecast? Once again, windy blowing conditions. That's that's going to be the problem. This day looks like Wednesday and Thursday. We'll get a break from Mother Nature. That is until Thursday night. Right now, computer indications are that we could see another episode of winter weather Thursday night into Friday. And unfortunately, this may take more of the form of some ice and or sleet. Look, 30in of dry, powdery snow is a real gigantic nightmare. George Balog from the city Department of Public Works, joined us, and they are actually considering a plan on side streets that you may want to elaborate this on taking trucks and just making a drivable surface out of the snow. Yeah. Number one, they can't get their big trucks down. The side streets. And then if you plow it, he explained to us, if you have the side plow, like you see on a lot of side streets that will cover everybody's there, everybody's cars in snow, which means they can't get the cars out or they'll shovel that snow back onto the street in order to get their car out.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=1111.72,1221.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71243/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And you're right back where you were. Yeah. Or if you have a straight plow and you come down a side street, chances are you're going to plow that snow back onto a major thoroughfare which you just cleaned. So what they're talking about doing is getting some smaller trucks and driving a couple of times up and down some of these side streets in alleys, making it drivable. Service. Yeah. So it packs down a little bit. So at least something could be done with this if we get some ice in here, Thursday night into Friday man live. Talk about adding insult to injury. So we will continue to monitor that for you. By the way, you give the temperature of the airport. You didn't mention the fact that the airport is now closed until noon tomorrow. Nothing is in or out of BWI until noon tomorrow at the earliest. Governor Glendening is, going to Pikesville to go to the emergency preparedness and enter there. He's going to get a briefing around 1130 this morning. He could have more to say about what's happening with the state tomorrow. Around noon time when we're on the air again. And also, Kurt Schmoke has already decided he and, Doctor Walter afraid that Baltimore city schools will not open. Tomorrow's, schools are closed, and the mayor's right down the hall. Mayor style. He's coming here. I tell you how how severe this storm is. We had a report earlier. I, a couple of hundred people, were stranded on a metro train in DC that became stuck on snow slick and tracks for about. Looks like about six hours. So I want you to. I want you to think about that. It was at the Takoma Park station. They had just come out of the station and it was snow slick tracks.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=1222.12,1306.51"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71243/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"This is above ground. Obviously that stopped them and they were trapped there for six hours with no heat or electricity. Yeah. This is a this is a bad storm. I mean, area y there's no area, currently watching or listening to us now that it's not pretty much in the same book. Can you take a look at the radar just real quick? We we still have this storm moving up, up to the northeast and, some snow banding around it. And, we'll keep some light snow in the forecast here for the next while. And then what we'll, will concentrate on are these blowing and drifting conditions in the area, and that's going to cause the biggest problems, this day. There's no question about that. But once again, we're going for a high of just. Hey, mayor, come on. West, the mayor is talking to the people in the in the county. They don't vote in the city. Call back. Well, you're on the air, mayor. Let's just say this is a man who has been nonstop throughout much of the day. Mayor. Good morning. Hey, come on in. We'll get Mike's right over here. Microphone. Yeah. Just bring you up to speed. Mayor. We've talked to George Balog a couple of times. Right. And what they're going to try to do. And we need the chair for him I believe. Now just go ahead and grab this city. Very good I'll hold this. You can around the top of your shirt. Great. Fine. Good. How are you? I'm doing fine. We, considered that. That's true. It's not just moving out. And, because of that, it's just making it so difficult. And we're, you know, just urging people to stay in. And, that's helping a great deal. Whenever we get cars out that are stranded, then we have to stop, the plow and, tow those. And that becomes a real part of the problem. But generally, people are, you know, being patient. Being cooperative and being very kind to their neighbors when they have four wheel vehicles and people are stuck. Let's talk about being mayor of a city the size of Baltimore. George Baloch told us he's just guesstimating 2000 miles of streets, right? Plus, you have all the citizens. You have the police. Fire. There are a lot of associated problems. As far as a headache goes, this about the biggest of your. You have your. For sure. Well, it's not only a city problem. You know, we're, we're affected by what's going on in the counties, too. I mean, one of the reasons that we decided, early to close school tomorrow is that we recognize that even if we could get our streets, cleared. We have a lot of people, some of our teachers that live in the surrounding counties. So what goes on, with, the other counties and the state, has an impact on this, too. So that's why we've been getting great cooperation. I mean, Butler County and and Rondo doing a fine job. And the governor has helped us with, the National Guard. And, so, you know, we're really getting good cooperation, but they are struggling as much as we, you know, the governor really punched that button quick. Yeah, yeah. And it helped too, because last night we were able to put, increased police patrols on the street.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=1396.78,1491.48"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71243/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We had an extra, four wheel drive vehicles through the National Guard. And we'll continue that through the. You mentioned city schools are already closed tomorrow. Have you thought any more about what happened with city offices? We're still looking at that. We're probably going to have to, have more people, come in. But, we'll make a call on that a little bit later. We do have a number of our neighborhood centers, or so-called hubs that are going to open. There will be a ten of them, opening around, 10:00, 1030. And, and this will be for emergency services, people who either can't get through the snow emergency number or having a, you know, some kind of very serious difficulty they can get to, these neighborhood centers are scattered throughout, the city. And we'll give you a list of and say, how does somebody find it? Yeah, yeah. Well, right now you can call three, nine, six slow. And, we're putting on the recording, the, numbers, to the various hubs that are open. Yesterday we had five of them, open and, they took care of some emergency, food and, and, fuel oil, problems, but mainly, they're there for other kinds of dire emergencies that people can't get to anyone else. I think there were a couple. There were a couple of smoke. Well, you know, that was a big worry because we gusting up to 35 mile an hour winds. And so we were really worried about, the power lines going down and people who normally would have shelter, would, would need a place. Again, the governor and, General Frederick, contacted us and they said they would open up one of the armories. So the Winchester Armory locate Armory, which has the street was available for us in case we had to move people, whose power might have gone out. We had a large place for them to stay. So it's been good cooperation. General Frederick Horseheads, the American National guard. Sorry for what you had, have to use that. We haven't had to use it. And that's because, what Marty was saying about the power lines holding. And, so far, people, have been able to find shelter, and all of the homeless shelters have stayed open throughout the day. Normally, as you know, they'd close in the morning, people would be out on the street until late at night when they'd come back into the shelter. So that wouldn't mean you'd have, you know, hundreds of folks wandering around. Mainly the downtown area, but the shelters have stayed open. As you wonder, the city today. What do you see? Well, I see side streets with accumulations of, snow, the likes of which I haven't seen in over a decade. I don't remember anything this bad in terms of, accumulation. And it's going to be a real challenge because as we start to get into the side streets, if we just push the snow, we're going to create these massive walls. We try to move them to the side.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=1591.71,1684.56"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71243/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We're going to bury everybody's car. National Weather Services Maryland is expected to get 24 to 30in of snow before the storm moves out in the metro Baltimore area. Observers say the storm could surpass the 24.7in of snow that fell in January of 1922. This would be the biggest story in the, in Baltimore City history. This reminds me of, a few years ago when the Orioles had that or that long losing streak or a 21 game losing streak. A couple hours. A couple hours last night. But, we were able to get our whole crew. Yeah, we've put about 400 people on the street at one time, from Public works. And they're working 12 hour shifts. In my health? I'd like to leave my loved ones with a little something when I'm gone, but I'm afraid I'm too old to get life insurance. I don't want to burden my family with my final expenses. Where can I turn? If you're like these nice folks and thought that life insurance after 45 was impossible to get or impossible to afford, I've got good news. If you're 45 to 79 positions, life guarantees you up to $10,000 of permanent modified whole life insurance designed to help pay your burial costs and other final expenses. There's no medical exam and no health questions. You can buy this policy if you're 45 to 79 and you're insured for life. Now, just $1 pays for your first month. After that, you can continue at an affordable renewal rate that can never go up. It's so easy to get from, easy to afford. Now, let me tell you why this protection is so very important. All of us someday will leave behind final expenses for our loved ones to pay. There's no escaping that. Those burial costs can easily add up to thousands of dollars. You know, some people even expect the government to take care of their final expenses. But the fact is, Social Security pays a death benefit of only $255. That's not nearly enough to cover the cost of a funeral today. That's why I recommend this coverage so highly as one sure and affordable way you can help leave your loved ones with dollars instead of debts. For all the details, just call this toll free number. The fact that the airport will not open until tomorrow, because not only they had 22in of snow out there, but the 22in of snow blows back and forth across the runways and they can't open them. Right. And the other thing is that Baltimore City has already decided to go into closed schools tomorrow. And of course, that affects all the private schools in the area that follow Baltimore City Schools. City schools have been the ones that have been open for the last several storms that I can remember. Yes. And, you know, the winter also that the city is considering on some back streets instead of plowing, just smashing the snow down to a drivable surface. So the four wheel drive vehicles that are out there that have to move around, at least on the major interstates and even on the major highways, are making some progress. The secondary roads are in big trouble right now, and that goes for the city as well as outside of the Beltway. Capital Beltway. Two good lanes there. Wait a minute now. And 95 to the north on the Kennedy Highway. Also reporting some travel lanes are open with caution. We don't see the, big closings down to the south as far as towards Richmond or things like that, and up into Wilmington and Philadelphia. They're still reporting the same basic situation. We're getting ready to go to a Marina. The new pleasure cove. Ooh. On the Chesapeake Bay. We were wondering what a blizzard is like in the Marina. Susan Webb joins us right now. Hello, Susan. Out front. Yes, there is, and it's going to stay pretty snowy to me. Is the boat listing in the. What do you got? A lot of weight sitting on that fiberglass. Well, the thing of it is, is, with the blowing snow and everything, it managed to create ice on the water. So even if the plows could get in, which might be tough, it'd be you couldn't get past that car. Oh, he's trying to get his Colts banner in. Get the plug in. And, probably just hang around and, try to see what's going to happen tomorrow, watch television, watch to watch the Colts meet yesterday a little bit, then beating the Chiefs yesterday. You guys take your entire morning show. Big time major market radio. You take the entire show up to Ski Liberty. Ski Liberty is not open. You guys are stranded and cannot get back to home base. And then if you plow it, he explained to us, if you have the side plow, like you see on a lot of side streets that will cover everybody's there, everybody's cars in snow, which means they can't get the cars out or they'll shovel that snow back onto the street in order to get their car out.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=1111.72,1221.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71276/annotation/52","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And you're right back where you were. Microphone. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Observers say the storm could surpass the 24.7in of snow that fell in January of 1922. This would be the biggest story in the, in Baltimore City history. This reminds me of, a few years ago when the Orioles had that or that long losing streak or a 21 game losing streak. So snowplows, if you want in for the coffee, we got it for you.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=2959.29,3048.78"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71276/annotation/70","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Nice and hot. All right. Thank you. Work out. There's no there's a run. Little on milk but coffee, man. They got some coffee with 330. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I'm trying it. I'm thinking maybe I get home that ice and the difference I get in today. The difference you showed between York Road and Hadley. Man, that was amazing. Isn't that something? I mean, really, I mean, it's pretty much four wheel drive. Only in York. Yeah. As is Ronnie said York is looking really good. Okay, well, that's the story of the day, you know. Yeah. Things are going to start looking better, Mike. But right now it's just up. Well, you know, the other thing about it is, is this drifting snow. I like I said earlier, I had to drive in my car and, it's just unbelievable. The back roads are so poor because no one's come through because, you know, everybody's told to stay in. So they did. The four wheel drive didn't do anything. Okay, well, I tell you what, Mike. Be very careful. Come back to station. A lot of our vehicles are stranded at the bottom of Tree Hill. Well, I think that's where we should just. We should just park. I'm not even try. All right, buddy. Okay, Mike, you been with us since 530 this morning doing yeoman's work out in Baltimore County. When he talked about driving his personal car. It's a four wheel drive vehicle, too. He wasn't there on any two wheel drive vehicle. Well, that's for sure. Okay, 953. We're going to go to the break. We'll come back and we'll wrap up our morning's coverage of the Blizzard of 96. And to get ready for Eyewitness News at noon. We'll just do an information round robin when we come back.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=3048.95,3125.48"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71276/annotation/71","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Can I get life insurance at my age? You got this free information kit from Physician's Life. You got it directly by mail. Now, there's no cost or obligation of any kind.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=3139.41,3245.54"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71276/annotation/72","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You're merely calling for information. We're sort of here to sum up the thing and a couple of things sum up the storm to me today. And that is a number one that most cab companies are not operating. We know Jimmy's cab cabin towels, most closed for the first time in its history, at least in anybody's memory. It's there's a lot of there's a lot of mental cues to let you know how big, a news and weather event we're in the middle of. But if you want the best graphic in the world, just look out your window. Blowing and drifting snow in the area throughout much of this day. Honestly, nobody is going anywhere quicker. The universe is going to shrink to essentially anywhere in your neighborhood. You can walk to beat a store, beat a deli, beat a small restaurant, beat a friend's house. And, if we're just going to have a very, very tough time with now and, it looks like through the night and possibly into tomorrow with this wind blowing and drifting snow.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=3246.23,3335.65"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71276/annotation/73","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay, before we leave, we want to check in with Chuck Whitaker one more time from our traffic team. Of course, I don't look at any improvement out there. What can you tell us? Well, we are making some improvement. We had a mobile unit that has just reported in from the J effects and said they have two good lanes, north and south bound. A lot of blowing snow, and the situation is the same as it is here. MTA has just advises that they will not have any bus service today in the metropolitan area. Gentlemen, back to you. They were they were going to try and open at noon if they could. They have not told us they will not do anything. And what about the phase three situation up in Pennsylvania? That is the same high 83 is still closed at the Maryland Pennsylvania line and 47 of the 60 counties still reporting they are shut down totally. And they will not let you drive there unless you are an emergency vehicle. That is correct. Most people we're talking to are not Pennsylvania.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995#t=3335.81,3403.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136404/file/252995/transcript/71276/annotation/74","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If you if you cross the line, they are going to pull you over and put you on the side till further notice.
