We're here. Yes, we are. Friday, Valentine's Day is coming. Yes. Snow on the ground. I mean, here you go. I cried myself. A river and it froze. I think they gone sky high. Marty Bass, We've got a little break in this day's weather action. There is more to come, and it looks like it could be some bad ice in the region. You are watching WJC TV. This is Eyewitness News with Don Scott. Sarah Pinkney. Weather with Marty back. Boy. A mixed mess gives snowplows a run for their money keeping up with today's changeable storm. It's been tough work all around. Mother Nature is doling out another yes, another dose of winter. And this time, you can't predict from one minute to the next what will fall from the sky. Our Alex Metric has been out all morning long, since before dawn, and is standing by live up in Tulsa now. So he's seen what's happened this morning and what's happening right now. And here it is firsthand from Alex. Go ahead. Don and Sandra, when I first started this morning, it was a heavy snow that was falling. 20 minutes later, it turned into a pelting sleet that lasted for hours. By 9:00 this morning, it turned to a freezing mist. And here we are at noon and it's coming down as a heavy sleet again. All in all, a seasonal smorgasbord. I'm sure we've all had more than enough of. Marylanders don't have to go to sleep to have a bad dream. Waking up will do it. And this morning it was the latest installment of a recurring nightmare delivered right to the doorstep. I mean, I've been sliding down hills, sliding around corners, holding on to polls. And I mean, it ain't easy. And I mean, I hope the sun appreciates this. Do the New York quote that will me, Jack. The plows were out early and Baltimore City, they were also spreading salt that and a couple of inches of snow on top of the ice from the storm two days ago actually made traction better for early commuters.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=126.34,232.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But the snow is all the top of the ice and it's helping a lot. But later on, on the side, streets in vehicles lighter than a city bus movie became a matter of illusion here. The ice slipped through the snowfall with a vengeance. It's the ice underneath the snow didn't have any traction. Obviously got changed or something. Yeah, even all weather tires are the side streets. So we've got ten minutes to walk up a 100 foot worth of side street as the ice underneath is so slippery if you keep sliding backwards. And just when the sleet ended, a freezing mist took hold. I think this is just a ritual. I don't know how far I'll get, but have to leave because the process, the automobile, God must be appeased. Good. Well, at least I think if I go, then I can come home in about two hours. But only for those whose cars started. My friend's car won't start the mode, or the engine is froze and the doors locks and everything is froze up. So it's just hurt well here. But more than frozen motors may keep cars at home. This is slag and abrasive made from coal mining. And it is what Baltimore County is using today because the county is out of salt. It does provide some traction, but it will not melt. Ice and ice may yet prove to be the worst part of today's. Adriene. Yeah. In fact, the the snow we had earlier this morning, the sleet may just be the appetizer. Your turn to come in and get warm. That's right. Thank you. Thank you. Alex. Out to me. Drink up. And. That's right. Well, I guess we should go to the man with a lot of the answers. Marty Bass is just received an update on this weather. He joins us now with the latest word. Right, Marty? Yeah, I'll tell you, that's just some sleet hitting, Alex. Believe it or not, we're into a relatively calm period. And the overall big picture of this day is weather. Of course, we had the 4 to 6in of snow around the area that's already passed dealing with now the current we're getting some sleet in the futures where the real problem is lay, lay and down to our south is a huge slug of moisture. In 3 or 4:00 this afternoon, it should be here. And we may be getting an ice storm in earnest at that time. And we'll be dealing with a whole new set of problems, very unique to an ice storm alone, much less an ice storm on top of almost a half foot of snow in the area. We'll update you during the weather segment Sandra. Okay, Thanks, Marty. Let's go to the traffic teams. Chuck Whitaker now to for the latest on the traffic hotspots Chuck. So it's still tricky enough to cause some problems. We're also getting word right around that the accident scene at I-70, that the ramps are very slippery to and from exit 16 and 17 report of an accident on the upper end of the Jay affects around Ruxton Road not yet confirmed. They're also plowing the roadway again on the JFK northbound around the 41st Street bridge and accident into Annapolis eastbound route 50 at the route 450 ramps and again, the south end of I-90 seven building on to Route 50 is also reported very slippery and spots down to the south of the city. Report of an accident at 95 near Washington Boulevard are getting some sleet and even some freezing rain south of the city now and down towards Richmond in Washington, about the same story. So take a nice and easy once again, if you can stay put, do so and just take a nice and easy for the weekend. Don and Sandra, have a good one. Back to you. Okay. Thanks, Chuck. Traveling the interstates and highways is not something you should do unless you really have to. So let's head out to Deborah Stone, who's live at the state Highway Administration with word on highway conditions. What's going on, Deb? Well, Sandra, this is the emergency operation center for the State Highway Administration. And as you might imagine, it's sort of busy around here this morning. This is the place where the highway administration keeps track of all the plowing and the salting operations that are going on all around the state.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=411.1,492.82"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They are tracking the storm here, hoping to try and stay ahead of it. And most of. Importantly, they're looking for the tools that they need to fight it. And that, of course, means salt, which is in high demand and low supply. With me now is Liz Kalinowski of the State Highway Administration. Liz, when we're talking about salt, this is something that it really it's it's in critical supply now, isn't it? Yeah, you're right. Deb, we have been saying we've been getting lower and lower and we're pretty much at the lowest level that we certainly would like to be. We're still operating below 10%. However, what's helped us, though, is overnight the storm that came through and is continuing to hit the area was such a beautiful precipitation that we were able to do some pushing and plowing, and that was primarily what our operations consisted of overnight. A lot of plowing, a lot of pushing of the material off the highway system. Snow is better than ice. Yes, it is always. Yes. Now, I know that you're mixing the ice. I mean the salt with other items in order to try to make it go a little bit further, aren't you? That's correct. We are conserving and using it very judiciously. We are mixing with sand. Some other abrasives, such as cinders and slag, dust, things like that, so that we can provide some sort of traction out there and assist with that. We are getting some solid supplies delivered today and over the weekend. So we're very happy about that. And we're also working on for some more for next week. The big help today, however, has been the low traffic as well. It looks like everyone has been heating our messages and staying home and not driving and really listening to the fact that we don't have a whole lot of salt and we haven't been able to give quite the level of service that we would like on the highway system.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=493.6,583.51"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"How does it look for the rest of the storm? Well, for the rest of the storm, like you said, we're going to continue to track it here in our emergency operations center, which has literally been operating for days on end now. We've still got 1700 personnel out there, 1250 pieces of equipment, and we're going to keep track of it, keep attacking the highway system, trying to keep it clear. But again, the message is, if you don't have to drive, certainly don't. Thank you very much. List. Kalinowski the state Highway administration. That's the word from here. They're working round the clock, basically trying to keep ahead of a storm that just won't let up. Sandra and Don. Okay. Thank you, Deb, and thanks to Liz as well. Okay. There's the word again that you shouldn't venture out unless you absolutely have to. But what if you are going out and you want to use mass transit? Let's see how the MTA is weathering the storm thus far. On this day. On the line with us now is Diana Ross Borough. Diana, bring us up to date. Well, good afternoon. We've we've survived the morning. I just don't know if we've survived the worst, I guess with the with the freezing rain about to come on and for the evening rush hour. At this point, light rail trains are continuing to run from Tammany am all the way to Cuomo station in Glen Burnie. We are looking at about a 10 to 15 minute delay across the system. Your best advice for people who are going to try to take the light rail or a bus this afternoon. The trains are there. The busses are there. Expect some delays, however. Okay. Good advice. Thank you. Diana Ross, borrow from the MTA. The freezing rain and sleet is wreaking havoc on Maryland's power lines. About 10,000 Baltimore gas and electric companies are still without power this noon with most of the outages and animal toll. County officials say it's the freezing rain that's sticking to the power lines, preventing workers from making repairs. And a warning, BGN is expecting the weather to cause more power failures this weekend. And when they get to Bermuda, Cancun, Jamaica and all of those other places, they tell me they won't even be thinking about Baltimore. In fact, they also tell me they won't be sleeping with their feet pointed this way. Nonetheless, with me is Ted from the Maryland Aviation Administration chief administrator. Ted, all of a sudden I forgotten your last name. Matheson. What's the deal as you await the weather to. Well, the good news is, is that BWI is open. We were down for just a little under two hours this morning, early as we cleared the runways. But the runways are open. The big problem is aircraft trying to get in here and those going out to northern locations because other airports have quite a bit of snow and ice as well. Some of the aircraft are stranded there and they can't get into here. And then if they get out of here, they can't get into the other airports. So a lot of airlines now are in a scaled down situation and they're reassessing as the day goes on. That's correct. They have to look at their whole system as not just one airport, but the whole system up and down the East Coast. So two runways are basically you all are just trying to get people out of here and not have anybody fly in. Well, we're accepting traffic. We do have some flights coming in. I'm all for, you know, have the adventurous and explorer spirit, particularly when it comes to snow. But now we're starting to get into a period of ice. And if you get out, you may find yourself in trouble. You may find yourself literally painted into a weather corner. And that's the best way I can describe it. Live weather shot is somebody out there right now cruising down Charles Street, I believe, with no real problems. How ever in the area. Right now we're seeing some sleet. You saw the Alex Dietrich live shot at the top of this show and you could hear it bouncing off of Alex's microphone. Well, now, understand, down off to the south and southwest with a big slug of moisture moving our way. And the general thinking right now is that's going to that's going to have all the ingredients for a pretty big ice storm in this area, whether winter weather warnings continue to in the region tonight through tomorrow, with the exception of the southeastern edge of the Delmarva, it looks like you folks in Salisbury in Ocean City not above freezing and should stay there.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=1141.38,1236.92"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Gale warnings now offshore shore. Looks like we may have a nor'easter firing up winds in the northeast along many reporting stations are now starting to lead us to believe that low is getting offshore, firing up a little bit. And here comes a little nor'easter action, 18 down, Harrisburg, 21 in DC, 28 here on TV Hill, 24 in Richmond. Here's a national satellite picture. Now, let's just discuss what we're looking at here. First off, this is the area of of current concern, the sleet now. But you can see we're at the very tail end of this slug of moisture. So you got to think to yourself at this point that this is somewhat the calm before the second half of the storm, which is right here. I understand we've had high pressure and low pressure giving us an easterly flow and that's increased the moisture in the region. Let's face it, weather's where's the air coming from? Air, for the most part, it's been coming from offshore. Now, this low, this low between the two them, we're going to see we're going to see more and moisture enter the area. Eventually we'll see warmer air shoot in off the coast. But the immediate concern right now is moisture around here and it's going to certainly be cold enough and to cause some real problems this afternoon. Low pressure sits offshore by tomorrow. This is the storm. It's going to be offshore by tomorrow. Here comes the saving grace of the day. We've got that second area of low pressure sitting up over Illinois and Indiana. It's actually once again weathers. Where's the air coming from? By tomorrow, this low is going to be active. Air is going to be coming up from the south where it is relatively mild.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=1237.07,1325.51"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They'll certainly be a band of snow and sleet. And with this warm air, temperatures somewhat above freezing, we'll start a little bit of a thaw. Tell you what the rest of the day, though. We've really got to watch our P's and Q's. We're going to have sleet and freezing rain in the area. We're going to watch for some snow out to the west and once again, rain down in the far south eastern portion of the viewing area. Temperatures, high temperatures this day will, for the most part, were below freezing, 38 in Salisbury, 38 in Ocean City. Once again, gale warnings offshore, a little closer to home. Much the same deal. Everybody's pretty much hanging below freezing. And once we start to get this warmer air, trying to filter in just above us, that's where you're going to see rain come down and hit the ground as freezing rain and ice. Wow. This afternoon, no advisories on the bay offshore, though. Here you go. Warnings, winds in the northeast, 25 to 30 miles an hour. Forecast for the day. Let's go ahead and call it sleet and freezing rain. Heavy at times. And the thinking right now is between 3 and 4:00 this afternoon. It's going to be a cold day again, high pretty much where it is right now at 28 degrees. Tonight, we're going to continue with freezing rain in the forecast. Eyewitness news reporters and photographers will show you the road, the rails and the skies as Marylanders begin to dig out. Maryland State police are warning people not to drive tonight because even Maine highways are covered and can be quite slick. Our team coverage begins on the road with Ron Mattes, who is live in southwest Baltimore County. Ron? That's right. That's very good advice from the state police. Driving remains very iffy, even treacherous and dangerous in some locations. We're live in southwest Baltimore at Washington Boulevard Boulevard and perhaps a Go avenue if you can take a look up the street here. Photographer Joe Eagle is going to take a shot of the cars coming down the hill. Traffic. There's very little traffic right now. Less and less as the afternoon is droned on. When we got here this afternoon, there was quite a bit of traffic. A lot of people are getting off of work early, trying to get home before the conditions worsened. Many people got off of work three, 4:00 and it was very difficult dealing with the ice this afternoon, trying to drive on the ice. We were here earlier when a big rig, an 18 Wheeler, got stuck as he tried to navigate the hill on Keaton Avenue. The rig the driver tried to do just about everything he could to get out of his predicament, by the way, he eventually did, but his wheels were spinning.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=1835.96,1954.16"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That happened to a lot of people at this location, driving once again tonight, even when the main arteries are one thing very important. If you don't have to drive. Don't do it tonight. Al, back to you. All right, Ryan, And you've been out in it all day. I've seen you here on Eyewitness News all day long. Would you say it's getting any better at all out there? Well, I would say the conditions are maybe just a tiny bit better because there has been some traffic throughout the afternoon. But as the night wears on, we're seeing very little traffic. So I don't see the roads getting much better tonight, especially with our temperatures which continue to be well below freezing at this time. Out to our thank you, Ron Vance reporting live. The MTA says to expect some delays, but bus metro mark and even the ice plagued light rail line operating on a normal schedule tonight. Well, of course, the question is the worst behind us? Do we dare be the big sigh of relief? Bob is here with the latest on the storm Bob. Yes, except for you folks in the Eastern shore where it's still some pretty moderate freezing rain on the eastern shore and some sleet down there. West of the bay, the precipitation, for all intents and purposes, is pretty much out here. We have freezing drizzle, some light, freezing drizzle around the area. Well, today's mean mix of weather misery got an early start and so did team coverage. Reporter Alex Dietrich, who found efforts to stay ahead of the storm, slip backwards as the day wore on. There was very little room for mistakes today. Not even snow plows were invulnerable to old ice hiding just below the surface of new snow. Dogs underneath the snow don't have any traction. Now she's got chains or something. Yeah, it was especially tough on side streets that have gone untreated all week. I hear I'm right on. It's like glass underneath here. So I thought if I get a little path shoveled out, I might be able to get out and put it somewhere where it'll be easier to move later after the next ice storm. After the next ice storm. Yeah. But even early on it was slippery going for those on foot. Old news that hit the doorstep again this morning. I mean, I've been sliding down hills, sliding around corners, holding on the poles. And I mean, it ain't easy. And I mean, I hope the sun appreciates this. Do the new year come back for me, Jack? The side streets took about ten minutes to walk up 100 foot worth of Side Street because the ice underneath is so slippery. You keep sliding backwards and keeping that sliding down on main roads continues to take a heavy toll on salt. Baltimore City still has some. The state is running out. And in Baltimore County, all that's left is slag, a gritty byproduct of coal mining in Salt Lake, putting sand table on slick floor, something something to give you some traction. I guess I heard it sometime. It look like you're not doing anything. Nevertheless, we're working as hard as we can with it, except there's so much of it. Alex Demeter, Channel 13, Eyewitness News. And some of the road crews have been on the job since 10:00 last night and they are still out there clearing a path. No doubt highway crews around the state are exhausted and that also describes salt supplies needed to fight the snow and sleet. And that is a problem for every municipality and agencies, including the State Highway Administration, which must clear a path from the eastern shore to the western mountains. Team coverage reporter Deborah Stone has a live report on the battle to keep the roads open. Deb? And it's not an easy battle to fight ALS. Someone also has to keep track of the 1200 odd trucks that are out on the roads salting and plowing all over the state. And this is where that happens. This is the emergency operations center for the State Highway Administration. And folks around here have been going nonstop all day. So if you're completely open and hard for will try to get your phone now with me right now is Liz Kalinowski who is with the State Highway Administration. Liz, I guess one of the questions is, was it as bad as you expected it to be? Well, I think just our diligent crews working so hard overnight and all morning, the mixture that we had to explain to everyone ahead of time we would be using when the roadway surfaces. That mixture of abrasives and salt so that we could conserve our existing salt supplies has really been quite effective. But that's still not tonight. Underlying. And forget about the seriousness. Remember, don't drive unless you absolutely, positively have to. And the salt situation right now, how desperate is it? Well, we still are critically low and we are still very concerned about that. The positive side of that is we are getting some supplies in tomorrow as well as working for some more next week. But we are still low. If we get another storm this weekend, we will still be forced to use the mixture that we have been using with the abrasives out there and certainly trying to do everything we possibly can to keep the system safe. However, the motor is cooperating and not driving when we tell them not to really is a big help. All right. Thanks very much, Liz Kalinowski. One of the other things is that drivers need to remember to cooperate with because when it says snow emergency route, no parking here, don't park there, you will end up being towed because the plows can't get around your car to plow the roads out. Deborah, thank you. Deborah Stone reporting live. Well, ice coated trees continue downing power lines around the area. That's another problem resulting in outages for many residents and businesses. At last word, 10,000 customers were without power, most of them in southern Anne Arundel County. With salt supplies dwindling and road crews working overtime, how soon can city dwellers expect to see asphalt? Mayor Kurt Schmoke is joining us right now to answer that all important question. Well, things are going a little bit better in the city. The crews have been out all day. I want to thank all of our citizens for not driving. We were fortunate today because it was a holiday for city workers generally. But of course, the police, the fire department, emergency crews and all of our public works people are out there. And my concern is, is that if they moved those the snow aside, there's a lot of ice still underneath the snow. And I keep thinking maybe the snow is helpful. Well, it is. It depends on the street. And we still want to put the salt down. That's one of the things that we want to do now. Today has been a very rough day for anyone trying to fly out of Baltimore. Stan Saunters has been at BWI all day and he brings us an update now on the latest stand. Let me tell you something. A whole bunch of people just came in to the airport flying in from Cancun. Guy walked in here with a straw hat on short pants, t shirts, dancing a jig.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=2641.67,2765.44"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I guess they don't get weather reports in Cancun Hotel. Nonetheless, I have some good news and some bad news. First, the good news. Lots of limited arrivals have been coming in. As for the bad news, well, a lot of people are going to have to be camping out because airlines like Continental have decided to suspend operations until tomorrow. So just because they're camping out here, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're happy campers. This was one of those days. Some passengers will always remember to forget one full of hassles, haggling and holding patterns in the terminal. And then I come here and the the Am land told me that the flight is canceled. So what we're despite your feelings right now, I'm just so disappointed. Aggravated some faces said it all. Plenty of folks waited it out at this winter wonderland similar to Iceland and wondering what life was like in destinations like Jamaica. And once you get there, will you be thinking about Baltimore? No way. We are definitely going to be basking in the sun, fun, snorkeling, all kinds of activities. And we won't even be thinking about Baltimore. This man is headed back to Los Angeles after seeing snow for the very first time. When I flew in here, I actually ran outside after I got out of there. When I got to the airport because or to the hotel, I never seen it come out of the sky. But that's all it took. I mean, I enjoyed that. But now that I got to go, forget about it. Meantime, workers have been clearing runways around the clock since last night, plowing them, plus deicing planes with safety first on their minds. Talk about a yeoman's job. These contractors have been working around the clock making sure that all of the snow that's been cleared off the runways is hauled right on out of here by the signal.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=2766.34,2876.14"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Appropriate connections there on the. Okay. Thank you. As the day progressed, some flights finally flew the friendly skies when conditions permit it. We will concentrate on keeping the runways up. We may have to close them for short periods of time to bring them or plow, depending how much material we have on it. The taxiways are up or now working on the ramps. And it'll be a continuous process throughout the day. So the story is Tony Sturrock of BWI is joining me live. And what's the latest, Tony? We're expecting limited arrivals from several of the carriers that had suspended operations earlier today after 8:00, for instance, US Air. Some airlines do have departures scheduled to go out over the next couple of hours. And most of the airlines are hoping to resume normal operations tomorrow morning. So what happens is you're just in contact with airports elsewhere up and down the eastern seaboard to see whether they can get flights in here. Right. Several of the airlines suspending operations based on how other airports were doing up and down the East Coast. There was freezing rain to the south. There was snow to the north of us. Well, you heard it. Thanks a lot, Tony. Lots of lulls in and out with the weather. Runways have been opened and closed back and forth. But as the situation warrants, the airport will make a decision on whether or not flights come in or possibly get out. But I don't think they'll be getting out for a while. Do you have a lot of people camping there right now? Yeah, It looks like you could be in the library. It's so quiet there behind you. Yeah, but you know what? I think a lot of these people are going to wake up saw in the morning from camp in here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=2876.44,2963.65"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Do you know what it's like to sleep on a hard plastic bench? And of course, the night team will update the situation at BWI for you tonight at 11:00. Well, if you can't get out by plane, look across town because a lot of those stranded airline passengers are catching cabs to Penn Station, hoping to take the train to their destinations. But things are moving just too slowly there. Despite what this board says, some passengers told us they have been waiting more than three hours to get out of Baltimore. One woman who's trying to get to New York with her family said they had to pass up two trains because the trains were already full. Some people, either by necessity or choice, took the risk on the road today. The traffic team's Robert Altman is watching conditions and he joins us now and he has an update Robert. Well, Dennis, we still do have a lot of problems on the Beltway system. One just reported on the ATL, the Beltway between the two A83 has overturned vehicle possibly involved. State police are having problems getting there. A lot of icy conditions on the north and beltway now, State highway administration also there and on the Beltway. The surface of the moon is a rather dusty place and composed of glass and pulverized rock. All right. Days and nights last two weeks each, their scientists tell us the maximum temperature of the moon is about 130°C. And that's the coldest it gets is -170°C, which is about absolute zero. It's here and they're testing it once again. It's leading us, folks to the precipitation. That's the last point. It's moving east of our region and northeast toward the New York City area and offshore. New York, by the way, about 15in of snow heading up that way. They have a real mess up there for us. We've got some left over freezing drizzle, spotty at times. We'll see it tonight through tomorrow for a few hours tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures may get above freezing. And just some just plain old drizzle for a little while tomorrow afternoon and again tomorrow night, maybe a few spots of freezing drizzle. Temperatures at or below freezing generally from Salisbury north and west Salisbury east. Temperatures at freezing and above. Bad falls probably leads the list for emergency room visits this week. If you've fallen and you have a swollen, tender joint, you really do need to have it evaluated. While the emergency room was relatively quiet early this afternoon. Emergency room nurse Laurel Ault says all told, she's seen more action this winter than in the past 20 years. Besides the people that we've had that have been injured from the snow and the ice. We've had people who have been horribly sick and it's really taxed this as far as getting them all taken care of at one time. You mean by horribly speaking, you told me that horrible stomach flu, the viruses, colds, pneumonias, heart attacks, the whole gamut. Well, he'll be getting better, too. So are you going to be more careful on the ice? Yes, I'm staying. So it goes away. Good idea. Yes, very good idea. Yes. And now the advice remains the same. Pay special attention when you're out on the roads and when you're walking around and when you're shoveling the snow, be very careful. Yeah. But it is a tough call. I mean, they accuse us of all being emergency room fanatics. You know, the least little thing. We go running to the emergency room, but you can't take a chance with an injury when you fall and say if you're not sure, you really you really can't. And that's why I asked him the question again. Of course, make sure to wear layered clothing along with hat, gloves and a scarf. You should also be careful not to overdo things. This is the third time. It's only the last 12 months that a major name off the Winston Cup stockcar circuit has been killed. Today's tragedy taking place in Daytona Beach, Florida. Practice runs for the Daytona 500. Veteran driver Neil Bonnett lost control of his car going into turn four, slammed head on into the wall. He died about two hours later. Back in Ellison's hometown of Huie Town, Alabama, the news was doubly devastating. See, this is also the hometown of the late Davey Allison, who was killed last summer. And folks in Huey Town take that sort of thing very, very personally. We consider New Orleans part of the really part of the family, you know, and when something like that happens, it just makes you at a loss, really. Reaction from the hometown of Neil Barnard killed today in a crash in Daytona, Florida. Officials there are now saying that looks like driver error was to blame. Neil Bonnett was 47 years old. Couple of baseball items for you this dismal winter day up in Milwaukee. They made it official this afternoon. Robin Yount, the greatest brewer player of all time, has retired from the game. 20 years. He played for the Brewers. He won two league MVP awards and got over 3000 career hits. But the brusque news could not guarantee him a place in the starting lineup for this summer.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923#t=4121.47,4220.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136339/file/252923/transcript/71114/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And so the great Robin Yount has now retired with the Orioles. The O's were packing up their stuff into the moving vans today, getting ready to head down to spring training in Florida. New acquisitions. Rafael Palmeiro and Chris Sabo giving rise to even greater than normal optimism about the upcoming season. And Frank says they're as good as anybody on paper. We now can sit and look Toronto right in the eye and say, we're here, we're contenders. We're not trying to catch you, but we're right here, even with you from the start. And that's exciting. Now the next step is going to spring training and seeing that type of talent on the field with the rest of the people we have here. And then the next step would be into the season's yard performance. That's Frank Long Ball Robinson. Six days to go until pitchers and catchers report to Sarasota, and 52 days remain until opening day at Camden Yards. Well, if you've ever spent a weekend rearranging furniture, you know how valuable a product would be that would lessen the load? It's on the market. And for $15, we decided to let Dick buy it. Yeah. You know, last week, after buying safety me on that that rather than a hundred bucks so 15 bucks you know they cut my budget back down. Why bother with an aching back? The ad says that you can move up to 3,200 pounds of furniture, just glide it across the floor, the tile, the carpet with little effort. Well, that's a pretty big claim. It's moving day at the Lane Publisher's Luther Bill home. A lifetime of possessions packed, all wrapped and stacked by the professionals from von Paris moving who agreed to help us with this test. The magic sliders are simply plastic and rubber discs which are supposed to be placed under the legs of a heavy piece of furniture. At first it looked like we had found a winner. Furniture slid right off the slider not once, but repeatedly under each leg. That highlighted the problem of getting the furniture on the slider to begin with, so it makes it slide. But the average person would still have to pick up each corner and stick it underneath it, which is about 150 pound piece. Since the world isn't level, we encountered the same problem when passing from one kind of tile to another. We left the sliders behind along with some pretty nice scratches in the tile. Then it was time to test the product on a carpet using another piece of furniture. This is a much heavier piece of furniture too. First you have to be able to move it out. A slider was placed under each leg as somewhat skeptical colleagues looked on. Would it work? It helps it slide a little bit, but actually slid before. It's still a heavy piece of furniture. Push doesn't make it any lighter. But how would our homeowner do? We asked Elaine Polish to give it a push. You want me to try to push this straight? After you? Once again the same problem as the back slider was left behind. By the way, a quick test without any sliders at all showed it moved about as easily without the product. As with it, Elena's a lot stronger than she does. Well, obviously it's not good to see that flaw scratch. And it does seem like this. I mean, they're cheap. It seems like it's about. With Al Sanders. Denise Cook. Weather with Bob Turner. Sports with John Byron. You've heard us say it again and again tonight. It bears repeating if you don't have to drive. Don't deny team coverage of our latest brush with Winter White. It's a fitting conclusion to a week of closed schools and treacherous driving without enough salt to treat the roads. Driving conditions tonight are extremely hazardous. Our team coverage begins with the night team's Melissa Sander, who has a live report from North Baltimore. Melissa, there's not a lot of traffic out tonight, and that's the case that we found throughout this evening. My photographer and I, as we've been traveling across the city covering the news, this is the corner of Cold Spring Lane and Falls Road. Very few cars out here. And usually it's very busy on a Friday night, but not this one. Perhaps it's because it is a Friday night, the weekend. Fewer people have to work, have to be out. And that's a good thing because even the more cleared roads like this one are slow going well for most of us anyway. The problem is that all the stuff that has built up has caused even more slick conditions with rainfalls for the fall. And that's what happened earlier this evening. Rainfall, while it's tough for you and it's tough and the emergency crews trying to help you. It's a little frustrating because it could be a life or death situation and the weather's not permitting us to get there. We haven't been dealing with robberies and things of that nature. Luckily enough, just look, I think it's just people staying inside because it's too cold to go out. Most definitely. But cold isn't stopping Dexter Claiborne from digging out. His sister's car plowed in on Edmonson Avenue, where street parking is at a premium. She's going shopping. She should not be in park if anybody else park. So see if she can get back here soon enough before somebody else get it, she added. Everyone battles for use of plowed roadway. Pedestrians risk getting hit rather than slip on the on shoveled sidewalk and drivers are slow to move aside for emergency vehicles. They don't want to pull off to the curbside because of this extra snow and ice over here. So they want to stay in the middle of the street. They don't move for you. And then you have the big problem of blatant disregard for firetrucks. Everybody wants to park 4 or 5 hours because it's always a spot open. So far, a quiet evening at the usually busy Steadman station downtown. It's a good thing. Responses are delayed a little bit because of the snow. Got to wear snow chains. Takes a little bit of time. Be extra cautious. Take full advantage. Set up with your trucks and position in your pumpers and everything. It takes a little bit longer with the ice and snow. People not falling down. Falling accounts for one out of three calls. Ambulance crews get now fractures and sprains. And as with the other emergency crews, it's slow going, but side streets are real rough. So as you can see, the emergency crews want you to stay home, make their jobs a little easier, especially because the road crews are having such a tough time battling what's out here. Very little salt to work with. They are stretching what they have. Both the state highway administration and the counties there at a critical shortage of salt. So this weekend, do not expect the roads to be as clear as what you've come accustomed to in the past hour. But tell me, Melissa, have you seen a lot of cars being towed earlier in the day, but not as the day wore on, closer to evening time. A lot of the towing services had to cut their service earlier in the day because their own tow trucks were getting stuck trying to pull out stuck cars. Okay. Amtrak trains were delayed in and out of Baltimore, as well as other northeast corridor cities. And at last word, there are still major delays. Earlier in the day, some passengers reported trains were running three hours late and many of the trains that did arrive were filled. That's because some of those Amtrak passengers started out at airports this morning, but soon found themselves stranded by canceled flights. That was certainly the story today at BWI Airport and that's where our team coverage reporter Greg Starter is standing by live with the latest from the flight deck Greg. It has been a very long day here at BWI. As you look down the terminal, you can see maybe a couple of people kind of walking around there. And many spent the evening reading a book of calling people, telling them their trip had been delayed or the plane tickets were just boring, especially with nine minutes because you're defending the kids with it. And I'm stuck here to Sunday, canceled everything for Delta. So we had to still we'll leave at tomorrow morning, hopefully got to go to Cincinnati instead of going to allow that along with, I guess the airport used a combination of sand and chemicals on the runway, but the bitter winter weather got the upper hand in some cases.
