John sat and told police he took a pizza to White Lock towing company in west Baltimore. And the trouble started with anchovies. Sometimes you go to the neighborhood, you know, if something is wrong, they still take this. Okay, no problem. You know, sometimes you go to another neighborhood and they said no, you know, and they don't want it and they yell at you and all kind of things, you know? The men who ordered pizza at White Light Towing overnight allegedly did more than yell. 58 year old delivery man John Sutton told his boss they beat him up. He just walked in and they saw the food. And, you know, we make mistakes and Jovi's on and our guys are sitting there. And who are that? He says, okay, take back and give our money back. We said, okay. So their driver called us back and we thought I'd give them food and we said other food. And then one guy, he jumped up and he started beat him up. Cameron Kazi says his shop often gets orders to deliver to white light towing. And there's never been any trouble up to now. Had still no word tonight on what caused last night's deadly plane crash in green belt. The single engine Cessna smashed into a backyard and burst into flames. Both people on board the craft were killed instantly. The pilot has been identified as 41 year old Roger wants to Glendale. The passenger as Valerie Maddox of Clinton. People living in the area where the plane crashed. Are calling West a hero, saying that he avoided landing at a nearby field where children were at play. An investigation at Northeast High School might have a snag tonight. And Randolph County officials investigating the handling of sex abuse charges at the school. Some of them apparently don't like one of the members of the investigation team. They say the addition of Eleanor Kerry, who is the Democratic candidate for attorney general, might taint the probe because of her political aspirations. School board member Michael Page says that he might call for a vote to decide whether or not Carey should be allowed to stay on the board. Let's turn now to other news. Police say they were hunting down their victims. Three suspects arrested for the murder of a German tourist in Miami and told police they had a method for hunting down potential victims. Supposedly they waited for the last incoming flight, watched for tourists and then followed those that look most vulnerable. This is one of the suspects here. All three suspects tonight are being held without bond. Prison systems around the country are launching a pilot program underway at the Maryland Corrections system. The weekend team stands. Saunders tells us tonight how mothers and daughters become good scouts. What appears to be a group of Girl Scouts on a field trip isn't. It is, however, a special visit they look forward to every other week. To another world where anxiety, depression and aggression sometimes can easily take an emotional toll on its residents. I see innocent victims who miss their mothers and want to be with them. Once inside the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women, it's time to let their hair down. Anxious scouts and their incarcerated mothers catching up on girl talk. It might be little things to she don't want to talk to me about in front of my mother or her younger brother because she's a teenager now. The common bond is L-o-v-e. My love for everyone in Jesup stands islanders for the weekend team. Eight states have already expressed an interest in putting a similar program in place depending upon the success of the one here in Maryland. So here's really the next well, today, tomorrow and Monday, here's today. We had the cool dry air coming down. Tomorrow the high will move across, settling on top of us to give us a day with hardly any wind. A little bit warmer. Just a gorgeous Sunday on the way. The Buckeye is the state tree of Ohio and it's the state tree. And the tree has these little things that you can see right here. They're called Buckeyes. Now, the Indians name them Buckeyes because if you look closely, it looks like the eye of a deer. Very brown. Very soft. Very close. Well, if we can see that. Yeah. Can anybody get out there? Here we go. What's going to happen here? In a minute. What are you doing? Well, anyway, this is it. It kind of looks like a chestnut. Yeah, it does. It does. But don't eat them. They're poisonous. So don't eat it. Well, that's Ohio for you. Well, look, we've had some cool weather move in from Ohio. It was there first before it got here. And today, glorious day. Today we got another real nice day on tap tomorrow. The Buckeyes did win today. Yes, they did. Buckeye stops here, man. Go ahead. All right. And notice that throughout the day today as a satellite shows there's hardly a cloud to be found at all. There are a few clouds making their way across the Great Lakes. We may see a few clouds moving through the area tomorrow, but not really anything to worry about if you have any outdoor plans at all. It's going to be a great Sunday. All this motivated by a massive high pressure system, clockwise circulation around that, bringing in a cool dry air, but clockwise circulation on the back side will eventually wrap in some warm and humid air. In fact, that's what's triggering some of these showers up here along the warm front. Looks like the showers will miss us, but you'll see on our Friday forecast long about Monday to Tuesday, we're going to get back into some temperatures in the mid 80s. What will your cable television service carry? WJC TV. Here's a special message from vice President and general manager Marcellus Alexander. There's a lot of confusion, frustration and misrepresentation surrounding the new cable bill, a bill that was designed, among other things, to lower cable rates for consumers and allow television stations to negotiate with cable operators for the value of their signals. Some cable operators, through their notices, would have you believe that broadcasters don't want to allow them to carry our signals. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those same operators would also have you believe that broadcasters are only after cash and determined to create costs that would then be passed on to you. Again, nothing could be further from the truth. Many of our proposals have nothing to do with the pocketbook, ours or yours. The fact is, it is in the interest of both broadcasters and cable systems to maintain the partnership, because that is in your best interest. As our viewer and their subscriber, we both need you. Another fact negotiations between the two parties are well underway. We have already reached some agreements for cable systems to continue carrying our signal.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136243/file/252792#t=3823.45,3948.0"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136243/file/252792/transcript/72984/annotation/37","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'm confident that as long as we keep your interest in focus, we will reach the other agreements that are necessary. Each year, household accidents take the lives of hundreds of children. We've learned of one which is easily preventable. Many infants and toddlers strangled in their own bedrooms. The culprit, we discovered is the innocent looking cord that hangs from a common set of window blinds. Our reporter Sylvia Gambardella tells us that all of these deaths can be easily avoided. In fact, she discovered a simple life saving solution. Our story begins with a desperate call to 911467, seven. I think I woke up this morning and I think I have a cord wrapped around. Okay, well, I'm going to get some money going over the phone and, you know, I'll get my money to get some money. Okay. But it was too late. Four years ago, 18 month old Reuben Volmer lost his life. His mother, Dr. Shira Vollmer, found him strangled in the cords of a level or blind. And it was in his heart. It was powerful. I just I just was like, I can't breathe. And where is my son? You know what happened to him? He was fine. A couple of hours ago. He was fine. You were at the movies for a lunch. Were this the Father Day? I mean, what is going on here? I put I put Reuben down in the crib. And then I went and I had my friend over with her children and they were playing in the house. Then when I went to go back and check on Reuben, what I saw was this cord was like this, and his head was like in like this. So his head was kind of tilted to the side. And that was July 22nd, 1989. Known is the case. But Ruben Vollmer isn't the only victim. Our investigations uncovered more than 100 children strangled to death and blind cords. Over the last ten years, we spoke to Shira Vollmer, lawyer Barry Novak. We realized there are millions and millions of blinds out there currently in existence. And the very same things that happened to Rubin can and has happened since his death. These are death reports, autopsy reports that the Consumer Product Safety Commission sent in 1992 to the Window Covering Manufacturers Association to back up the CPSC. These claims that these deaths are continuing and 160 deaths and 60 deaths. We went to Washington, D.C., to begin our crusade at the Consumer Product Safety Commission. We issued an alert in 1985 and then reissued it in 1989. Why was it reissued? Well, because we found that deaths continue to happen. The Ten Children's Triangle a year. And if you're flying cause it's not a lot, it's a serious concern. We would like very much for parents to keep these cords away from children, keep the cribs away from the windows. You keep saying parents. And I'm wondering at what point would the manufacturers finally do something about this situation if the manufacturers knew? Since data was compiled since 1973, they still could have done something. This only proves that this has been going on for a while and yet nothing is being done. Well, the warnings started in 1985 and there have been inserts in the packages since then. This is a generic sticker that the Window Covering Manufacturers Association made available in 1985 as a as a warning label to go on the bottom rail. What is it? Can you describe this? The Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates this particular industry. Why can it then mandate that it have addressed the problem and have a safer blind out there and also address the old lines that are out there? What you're really suggesting is a standard for trade records and blind courts. Setting a standards is a big job. It requires resources. It takes time and effort. And 18 deaths worth the effort. But in Durango, Colorado, it didn't take hundreds of deaths to cause Rick and Karen Langhart to act. Just a near-death in their home was enough for them to come up with a solution. But if adopted, would be saving children's lives today. They set him down and he was playing around and these were hanging down and he was playing with them and put his head in it. Apparently he was hanging there in the blind, hanging. In what respect was it? Was it wrapped around? No, His head was right in. But right in the middle of this. Yeah. Like if this was his neck he was in. And the cause just like that. And that evening, Rick had gone out into this shop and started thinking about how could we. How could this be done differently? And wouldn't it be easy if you made a tassel so that with downward pressure, it just snapped apart? Some people in Durango, Colorado, came up with a solution, which we showed you a safety tassel. They did not have an engineering background. Why can't the blind manufacturers come up with a solution? And not only was the law unresponsive to the Lang hearts, it may have also ignored safety designs created by former employee George Georgopoulos designs that were presented to the company years before Ruben Vollmer death. Georgopoulos estimates his designs would have cost leveled or as little as a half cent per blind. We tried repeatedly to speak to level or management and you have him get back to me today, but got nowhere. Thanks a lot. Bye bye. Anyway, he struck out on all accounts. Here's the comment We've been looking for a letter from the president of level four. Essentially, it says because of pending legislation upon the direction of their legal counsel, they are declining an on camera interview with us. So it looks like the comment from a lawyer is no comment. Fortunately, Hunter Douglas, the world's largest blind manufacturer, did not ignore the Lange hearts. October of 91, there was a window covering show in Las Vegas, so we designed our booth and went to the trade show and actually had a had a real nice response. Something had to be done. So we initiated a three pronged attack. First, put pressure on the blind manufacturers to address the problem in a responsible way. Second, persuade the Consumer Product Safety Commission to make this a priority. And third, and this was the most crucial. We had to get the word out to parents. We took our three tiered plan to Hunter Douglas headquarters in New Jersey, where we met company President Jerry Fuchs. He was surprised at the number of children who had died in blind cord strangulation and even asked to see our data. It was important to convince them, as the leader in the industry, that the need for a solution was urgent. So that's why I'm making this proposal to you. Our proposal called for all blind manufacturers to get involved in the issue, something they hadn't done before. If we could get Jerry Fuchs on our side, we had a chance. Well, we would we would certainly be happy to spearhead an effort like that. But I I'm certain that you'd get no resistance from any of the manufacturers in this industry. Let's go for it. I think it's an issue of coordinating it and setting that objective and setting that goal.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136243/file/252792#t=4584.02,4698.15"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136243/file/252792/transcript/72984/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I can't imagine anybody because we're not talking about a commercial issue here. The government's consumer protection agency had to be on board. We got them to cut through the red tape and work together to set up a quick timetable for getting the word out to the public. The safety brochures have been printed and are now being distributed throughout the country. We had brought together the manufacturers and the government as we had hoped. The unprecedented campaign will make the lifesaving brochures available just about everywhere that parents might find them, including every baby doctor's office in the country. And more than 8000 media outlets, including TV, radio and newspapers, will be contacted to make unsuspecting parents aware of the danger. For sure. Better than numbers. Each week we would like to pay tribute to one of our stations, which crusaded for a change in their community. This week we salute KMG TV News in Seattle for an investigative report on how pet dogs end up in animal research laboratories. King's program, Our Times, worked with animal rights activists to document many cases of theft, fraud and animal abuse. They investigated corruption among dog dealers who sell pets to research facilities. The reporters at our Times offered this innovative solution to concern pet owners a microchip containing owner information that can be injected into their animals. The chip allows animal shelters and research institutions that have scanners to instantly check an animal's background. This way, lost and stolen animals can be identified and saved. We extend our appreciation to King TV's hard times for a crusader job well done. Here at the Crusaders, we've established a toll free one 800 number, so you can call us. Perhaps you're involved in your own crusade and could use our help. Or if you know of a crusade worth fighting and need help, please don't hesitate to call us and let us know. Well, I wanted him to know that if you're violating policy, you're violating policy. And there's a consequence for this. Somewhere along the line, somebody's got to pay the piper. The accusations against Joe were not only weak, their timing was suspected best, all of them following Rockford's arrest. Policy questions such as answering distress calls outside his patrol area. I've yet to see. A criminal or a crime. That new city limit boundaries. One of the few townspeople who was willing to speak up for Texas, Joe was Smith Rodale, the operator of the local in. How much of this is one city councilman's vendetta against the large? A great deal, I think. I think that has a great deal to do with it. I think it's reprehensible to use your official position to try to get out of something like this. The rumors, the innuendoes and the intrigue of small town politics were getting so deep. Joe was afraid he'd wind up on the wrong end of a coup. Out of luck and out of work. That's when we thought it was time to get Joe a lawyer. His crusade against drunk driving was so compelling, we made it our crusade to save his job. Dick Dolan of gets Madden and Dunne took Joe's case. And first on the agenda were those threatening letters. The things I saw in those letters smell like a pretext to sort of go up to to to get him fired or get him reprimanded or something.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136243/file/252792#t=6448.75,6566.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136243/file/252792/transcript/72984/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And what the real issue seems to be is that some people are upset with the way he is enforcing the DUI. The lawyer was a great idea, but Joe needed more to keep his job. He needed national support to put pressure on the city council. Pressure from groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Students Against Drunk Driving and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. So we went to work and line them up. Is is there a mad chapter in Montana? Not only were they willing, they were anxious to come to Three Forks. Bob Carruthers of Aetna Insurance. Mark Hyman with the Crusaders. How are you? I understand that you guys used to have a program in which you placed surveillance cameras in police cars. I just need your signature. All right. All right. Nick comes when I call him. You bet. Well, as the momentum continued, a local petition was started, and it's time to say there's another segment of people that say, hey, we like this law enforcement. It's time that the people got picked up for DUI. Why do we have to wait for someone's child to get run over and killed before something is taken care of? The story of Joe's hassles with the city. We're beginning to get national attention. Joe's job was up to the city council. Counting votes is hardly a science, but in our interviews with Rochford and Armstrong, what seemed clear was our need to pin down the two council members who are making all the fuss. Couldn't there have been an easier way of doing it besides asking for his resignation? Here's a little harsh. I was wave the magic wand. What would happen? It's over. But was it over? But we weren't convinced. That's why we arranged a nationwide show of support at this crucial town meeting. Our hope to influence the final vote for Joe's job at next week's city council meeting. This was it. We needed to send one over the wall in the case of drinking and driving. It's a very serious topic. So it's a small town, so it's a small issue. It caught the national attention because it's a bigger issue. Drinking and driving affects everybody. Bonnie has something to present from the Mann Organization to Joe. By supporting it's Marshall Joe Eldridge. Three fourths has said no to one of the most insidious of all alcohol and drug problems. Thank you, Joe. We're proud of you. We came up with 437 signatures and we had probably 100 verbal. People said that they do support and they just don't like to sign a piece of paper. So, Mark, do you think these two councilman sole objection against Texas Joe, was his vigorous enforcement of the law? I think the charges of policy violations were totally trumped up. I think you have to remember in this town is that it's only about 7 or 8 blocks long. So even if you were totally drunk, it would only take your 15 minutes to walk home.
