They brought our total for the month to 1.03in. We got 9500s. But the thing about it is, you know, we normally would expect to get almost four inches in a month. We're halfway through the month. So if it were a normal month, we ought to have two inches by now. Sure. We've only got a little over an inch. So not only did that not catch us up to get rid of the drought conditions, but even the immediate short term, we're not even up to normal in August. And as we always say, an inch in 20 minutes doesn't help. Yeah, right. We're really we're running well behind and we continue to do so. But we're looking at the possibility of some rain coming in again Wednesday. And of course, we could overcome the drought a step at a time, I suppose. So we'll take that if it comes to us. Go ahead. Take a look at the satellite view, because the clouds of the weekend offshore, another batch of clouds out in the plains states gathering up in advance of a front. That is the mechanism that brings us that possibility of rain on Wednesday. Until that happens, though, high pressure taking hold over the East Coast is going to bring nice conditions, that is to say, seasonable temperatures. We're expecting a high today of 88 degrees with humidity. That won't be all that bad. The skies should be fairly blue. We have been committing words under the circumstances. This is the Christ Temple Church and this was the resource center, a place meant for giving. But last night, someone decided to take at least $50,000 in property loss. This is how, through a dilapidated lot once a decade building. Deacon Dixon says the city demolished it, mutilated a chunk of his church. This gaping hole big enough for a burglar. They enter through the broken wall, but they exited through this back door and with them they took 5 or 6 computers for television set to air conditioning and these copper pipes that apparently have street value. There's also property damage, lots of it. Last night we had major flooding because the pipe, the copper piping was removed, physically cut. So today the church tries to repair the damage inside and out, financial and personal. They've come in and destroyed the building, so we have to do even more work. We have to double our efforts and double our resources just to get back to where we were that we can open the door and have people come in. Ironic, isn't it, that such an act of greed has inspired such an act of grace? The Bible says, and our church motto is, We've got all things apart. And that's what we believe. All of that sort of random violence starts to go down as we drive it indoors. We certainly don't have enough officers on the streets and we've got to have to make them foot patrols. But I also propose that we have an auxiliary police force put in place. These are community people that volunteer to be the eyes and the ears of the police department. We call it community policing, and it's what works. Officers who know the neighborhoods, know the back alleys, know the neighbors. President Clinton travels to Kansas City, Missouri, today, where he will deliver what he calls a new concept to put peace before war. Bill Plante joins us from the White House with details. Good morning, Bill. Morning, Russ. The president today will make a pitch to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for more spending on the nation's diplomacy. Mr. Clinton knows that the VFW wants more spending on the military. He supports they supported him on Kosovo, and he'll promise them that. But he'll also argue that if there's more spending on diplomacy, the nation's military is less likely to have to go to war. Congress has cut $2 billion from the president's foreign affairs budget, including money for implementation of the Y Accords, part of the Middle East peace plan, and funding for the program to help Russia dismantle its nuclear weapons and provide jobs for its nuclear scientists. The first family was in New York yesterday. House hunting in upscale Westchester County for a place to call their permanent residence. If the first lady runs for the Senate, the Clintons, accompanied by daughter Chelsea and Mrs. Clinton's mother, Dorothy Rodham, saw at least four homes, all with prices over $1 million. A staff member of the first lady's office says that the couple has narrowed their choice down to maybe 3 or 4 homes. For us, Bill, some Americans are asking just who is funding the first family's housing trip? Well, that trip was on a government jet from Andrews Air Force Base here in Washington to New York. And the question will be whether the Clintons reimburse. If they do. You can be sure that the reimbursement will be at something like a commercial airline rate, which doesn't begin, of course, to cover the cost of operating that military jet. The race for sex enhancing drugs for women is heating up. Dr. Emily Sanjay is here with more on what's usually a male oriented story. Good Monday morning. Good morning, Thalia. Well, we know about the great success Viagra has been for men, 12 million prescriptions written for it since it was introduced last year. Well, that's left many wondering whether Viagra would also work for women. Now, some very early evidence suggests men may not be the only ones the drug can help. One small preliminary study finds that Viagra does appear to enhance female sexual arousal. 20 women who were post-menopausal or had hysterectomies were put on either Viagra or a dummy pill. The women taking Viagra had increased blood flow to the genital area and experienced increased sexual arousal.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136505/file/253091#t=1315.18,1414.48"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136505/file/253091/transcript/71215/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"More small studies are underway, but what's really needed before we see Viagra become a big seller for use by women are larger clinical trials that show that it's safe. In other words, that it won't affect fertility or cause birth defects in women of childbearing age. So far, Pfizer, Viagra maker, has yet to announce those trials. So in the meantime, there are other sex enhancing drugs that are on the horizon. One, apomorphine may work to help sexual desire, something Viagra can't do. It is awaiting approval by the FDA right now for use only in men. It will be called you Prima. But just like Viagra, testing in women probably won't be too far behind. So things are in the pipeline. One of the thing that's on the horizon, although probably not as close as these other things, is something called Fan Ptolemy, which will also help women, although they're only in very early Phase two clinical trials. But these last two drugs that I mentioned are in clinical trials, whereas Viagra so far is not. Okay. So not very far away. But what are we looking at really for? I think we're a script. I think we're seeing a couple of years down the road for Viagra, at least a couple of years. A lot of people wonder how common sexual dysfunction is in women. Well, some recent surveys made a big splash when they came out because 4 in 10 women reported some form of sexual dysfunction compared to men, 3 in 10. So obviously, it's a larger problem than we realize. One of the problems has been that studying sexuality and women is a much more complicated task than in men. So I think that's held things back. But with these new drugs, I think we're going to see more on the horizon.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136505/file/253091#t=1415.62,1500.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136505/file/253091/transcript/71215/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Exactly. We were in there watching golf, and the winds are just whipping back and forth and all of a sudden it's just a big pop, you know, and looked at the wind and tree laying on the road. We've been fairly busy all morning just getting the trees off the streets. A lot of damage in this area. Residents say it felt like hard winds caused by a small tornado that swept through early Saturday evening. I mean, it's going to split. When it goes, it goes. Judging by the looks of things, it was lightning that sheared this 100 foot tall oak tree into two pieces, sending one of them along with eight foot slices of bark into the Gordon's backyard. And here are some of our top stories this morning. Britain's Prince Charles has wrapped up his Mediterranean royal holiday and after years of working to keep his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles a private affair, the prince is now taking a much more open approach. Alan Pizzi has our report. It was the moment the British press, the a few others have been waiting months to see. And the Greeks got it first. Prince Charles and his longtime companion, Camilla Parker Bowles, ended their summer holiday together in public. The couple, along with the prince's sons, William and Harry, had spent the last ten days aboard a luxury yacht owned by a Greek tycoon. A veritable army of paparazzi had been unable to track them down. The public display was seen by royal watchers as another step in the process of formalizing the couple's relationship.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136505/file/253091#t=2965.58,3081.67"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136505/file/253091/transcript/71215/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It was in sharp contrast to the start of the holiday when Charles and Camilla arrived on different days. But we've got the whole lot together. That's fine. And just to add spice to it all, a public display of togetherness came a day after reports that Prince Charles had been threatened by harpoon wielding protesters. That incident occurred while the prince was swimming away from the luxury yacht near Cyprus. A royal bodyguard intervened when the prince set off a security alarm. He always carries. The incident provided the royals obsessed British tabloid press with lurid headlines. But a spokesman for the royal family played down the dangers. As for the couple in question, they seem to have had a good holiday. Alan Pizzi, CBS News, London. As the world's reigning violin virtuoso, Itzhak Perlman, is at the top of his game. But they are showing up in the Baltimore area. But again, I'll show you the radar in just a minute. And it doesn't have any rain in those clouds at the moment. Temperature, though, pushing up into the 80s. I don't think we're going to hit 90 degrees today. I think today is going to be a very seasonal day in terms of temperatures, and that is to say, staying in the well, stay below 90 with highs in the mid to upper 80s or so. If you're headed out on the water this afternoon, winds will be right now there from the south. But I do expect for the most of the afternoon they will turn to the north and eventually to the northeast at 5 to 12 knots. Chop on the water, not much of a problem. Just to confirm the idea that there is no real shower activity in this this little ground clutter showing up. But with those tropical looking clouds out there? They do. Boy, we really could use the rain, but it just doesn't look like that's going to be a feature of today's weather. Wednesday, on the other hand, there is a possibility. Let's come on back to the big satellite view and show you how this is all developing. Ridge of high pressure trying to take firm hold. We're still kind of on the boundary with this front that has become essentially stationary offshore. But as this ridge moves on by, we're expecting seasonal temperatures today, like I said. But further on out in the midsection, the country, a veritable heatwave occurring in Texas tells us there's a lot of hot air to the west of us and that hot air will be drifting in our direction. Mix it with some Gulf humidity and by tomorrow, no mistaking that we are in summertime conditions. I expect to see temperatures over 90 degrees tomorrow and the humidity is starting to come back up. And as this frontal system makes its way down through the plains and into the midsection of the country, it will arrive in the mid-Atlantic region long about Wednesday. And that's what gives us a much better chance Wednesday rather than tomorrow of activating that hot, humid summer air that will be in place by then. Again, rain will take it. And this could be a thunderstorm situation. We just have to monitor this as we get a little bit closer to it. I'm running for mayor of Baltimore City because I know I can turn this city around. Sources close to the O'Malley campaign tell Eyewitness News that Schaefer plans to endorse O'Malley during a news conference tomorrow morning. Endorsements are important. Political experts say an endorsement from someone like Governor Schaefer could make a difference in a race this close. I think Governor Shafer's endorsement, if it does occur, will be significant. I think it may solidify those who are trying to look for a reason to support O'Malley. Lawrence Bell was endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police. Also, just last week, the powerful ministerial alliance endorsed Carl Stokes. Eyewitness News asked Carl Stokes tonight what an endorsement from Governor Schaefer. I think the governor's endorsement and former Governor Schaefer's endorsement also would move those persons who think very highly of the governor. I think it'd be one component, though. The candidates themselves think Schaefer's endorsement is important. And political analysts say the Schaefer endorsement may sway some opinions. But what are the voters say? I tried to base my opinion on what I know of the person and not what other people think of them. Now, political experts say that Governor Schafer's nod of approval is just about the most powerful endorsement O'Malley could get from any politician. But experts say an endorsement from Kweisi Mfume could carry even more weight. So far, FEMA has said that he won't endorse a candidate. Okay. Thank you, Kathleen. Keep an eye on the sky for dark clouds and flashes of light. Listen for thunder. If you can hear thunder, you can be hit by lightning. Avoid hilltops and trees. They help make you a target. Squat low to the ground. Don't lie flat. Lying flat puts more of your body into contact with the ground which conducts electricity. Eyewitness News First morning weather has been showing you this drought disaster is taking a toll on a lot of businesses. And of course, golf courses are no exception. As you can see, your favorite local courses aren't looking so good. Golf courses are cutting back on the amount of water they're using, but watering can only be done on the driest spots. Greens keepers are using a special probe to determine where water is needed the most. This is a pro with the guys the watering crew do when they go around. They check the green with this probe. And what we're looking at is the sample that the guy pulls out of the ground and then he feels it with his fingers to see how moist it is that if it's drying out and he'll know that he needs to put some water on to it. Some golfers delight with his news. The dry courses are causing them to lose five strokes or more. Of course, I think that's in jest. Believe me, nothing adjusts about the weather this weekend.
