There's a possibility the little boy may have been playing with a cigaret lighter. I can hear the mother screaming, Get my baby out, get my baby out. And we went back there. There's just no way you get in there. There's no way the flames were too high so fast. The parents, Donald and Pamela Baker and their five year old son were able to escape unhurt. The search for the cause of the fire continues. It was less than 72 hours ago. Two teenagers died in a fire in Cecil County. Again, in that case, the smoke detector was not working. There is a somewhat of a middle Eastern flavor given certain political developments over there. There there is more of a sense that, well, it's a big area and there's a whole lot of peoples involved. And I actually thought it was kind of interesting to see a traditional Middle Eastern delicacy, falafel, great little things, what is available actually full of all that. So yeah, dried beans, that's chickpeas grounded and grounded with fresh vegetables and spices and deep fried. Coming up next, a tragic holiday weekend for a Cecil County family, remembering those men and women who served and died. We'll show you how Baltimore observed Memorial Day. And at the end of a long weekend in the sun comes a long trip home. You are watching Jay-Z TV with Baltimore's most watched 6 p.m. newscast. In real time, closed captioning for the hearing impaired. This is eyewitness news at six with al sanders and Denise Cobb. I'm trying to take a holiday weekend for a Cecil County family. Tonight, they mourn the death of an 11 month old girl killed when their home went up in flames. It happened just after seven this morning. Richard was in Northeastern reports the family's smoke detector had been disconnected. 720 this morning, Zachary and Julianne Baker were playing in the living room. Their parents were asleep in the basement. Seconds later, the townhouse exploded into an inferno. A little boy playing with the lighter. I got up at 7:00 this morning and I was asleep and everything was fine. A half hour later, maybe 45 minutes, it was all up in flames. Donald Baker tried desperately to get to his young daughter. He couldn't get out into the living room, so he had to run around the back door and tried to come in the front door, but he found it locked. By the time I got dressed, come down stairs and went down to the front, the front of the house was so involved it getting close to the door was just too high.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115657/file/219483#t=1753.83,1861.48"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115657/file/219483/transcript/62513/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They were out back screaming and hollering, Save my baby, save my baby. But now that I was together, my husband got dressed and tried to. Flames were already out front. So far you couldn't get in. She was just showing that Zach started in the living room with the lighter, and then she was just wanting her baby. Zachary escaped, but no one could save 11 month old Julianne, who could not make entry with even a self-contained breathing apparatus. So we made an exterior attack and got in as soon as we could. Where was the baby? Baby was right inside the front door. Becky Robinette was Julianne's babysitter. She was so beautiful. She had the biggest blue eyes. She was a happy baby. Oh, now I know she's going to be happy up there. Don Baker says he disconnected the smoke alarm because the shower used to set it off. This is the second deadly fire here in Cecil County since Thursday night when two teenagers, a 13 year old boy and a 17 year old sister, died in a fire in Cecil tonight. And that fire, as in this tragic fire. There was no working smoke detector. I don't know what it takes to make people understand that they have to keep their detectors operating for the benefit of themselves and their families. And you can see the repercussions of when you don't have a smoke detector. Everything. But do you have insurance, Don? No, No insurance. Nothing. Richard Share, Channel 13, Eyewitness News, Northeast, N.C.. So counting anyone wishing to help the Baker family is urged to call the Cecil County Red Cross at (410) 390-2470. And a reminder. A homeowner who does not have a working smoke detector can be fined up to $1,000. Oh. Come on, America. God show. It's great. Oh. Disgrace on me. It was one of the most violent battles of World War Two. And for the veterans of Normandy, the memories are still very clear. Omaha was deadly. I mean, those guys did return, you know. And it was bad. They were all bad. But the worst was Omaha. Thomas C Bland, Jr. Ronald Emeran. Denzil. Timothy H. Shaw at Delaney Valley Memorial Gardens. They honored Veterans of all Wars today. But special attention was placed on the soldiers from Maryland who stormed the beaches of Omaha nearly 50 years ago. My memories when I first hit the beach was where can I get something to get out of this artillery fire? I saw some shell holes. I went from hole. The hole. Just about all of these men and women are senior citizens now, and many feel fortunate to have escaped the firepower of Adolf Hitler's army in 1944. Edward Elbon was only 23 years old at the time and was lucky enough to survive it. I was lost a lot of friends because we we had trained together for five years almost. And to see so many killed that we good personal friends. Marilyn played a very important role in the invasion on Normandy. Hundreds of ships used in the military altercation were built right here in this state. And many of the troops who provided supplies were also from this area. American flags were placed at each grave to mark Memorial Day at Baltimore's National Cemetery. Marylanders, like their counterparts across the nation, paused to remember all service members who gave their lives in global wars. And of Marilyn's Vietnam Memorial Special observances included ceremonies for veterans whose names are not engraved at the National Vietnam Memorial in Washington. Many believe their loved ones died of exposure to such things as Agent Orange, a chemical defoliant used during the Vietnam War and at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. President Clinton led the nation in honoring America's fallen fighters. Mr. Clinton stressed his role in preserving democracy worldwide. The president warned Americans on this Memorial Day to keep their guard up. Mr. Clinton also urged parents to teach their children about World War Two. But for millions of Americans, this holiday weekend is about cookouts and relaxation and summer style fun. And in Maryland, that often means a trip to the shore. This is the hour beach vacationers traditionally dread. Melissa Sander joins us live from the Bay Bridge with more on the price commuters are paying for all that sun and fun Melissa. Yes, indeed. Time for the third family to head home to Ohio. It's not not really that bad. It's just the dread going back. You hate to leave so early and there's not enough time to perfect that tan. We've been on the beach every day, even though it's been cold. I wanted to get a really good tan, but. I'm not going to with all my clothes on. The ocean breeze is definitely warmer than the ocean itself. Only in the upper 50s. If you dare go wind only near. Which leaves plenty of time for lots of shopping. Lots of shopping. It took us three hours to get here the other side of the Bay Bridge. So that's not too bad. About one hour more than it would have normally taken today. Well, maybe the wind was with you, Melissa. And helping you make it away. Didn't look like most people in Ocean City were clearing out about the time you left. I know there are a lot more people who came down just for this one day of this year, then Memorial Day of 1993. That's because it's such gorgeous weather today. And last year on this day was overcast and chilly and rainy and people just wanted to get out of there. So there was a mass exodus around lunchtime. Right now, we're not considering it a danger to people, but it's unpredictable right now. The cat has been in captivity since it was born. It's not used to the wilderness or the wooded area that it's in right now. This is all strange territory to it. We're not sure how it's going to react if it's confronted or by people or people confront it. The big concern is people will do more harm than good, scaring the animal deeper into the woods, further away from traps. Helicopters have looked for the cougar without success, and an infrared search at night won't work because the ground is giving out too much heat. Dogs aren't being used because they could frighten the cougar further away. Large livestock are not judged to be at risk, but small pets might be. Even though the cat is staying well clear of homes and people outside of parents keeping a closer eye on their kids. Fred is having little impact on the way people live their lives in the countryside. I'm not too scared to go when I say my I know how to run the kids in the house at my home and the kids in the house. I go out fast naked. If people would react the way they're asking them to if they see it, don't just call 911 and get someone who is prepared to, you know, handle the situation. I think it'd be alright. A letter arriving in the mailboxes of city school employees over the weekend is causing concern tonight. Suzanne Collins says it warns of pending layoffs and many workers want to know why they weren't told sooner. 10,000 school employees are getting the letter from Dr. Walter and pray. Teachers, cafeteria workers, electricians and even management. It says, I must inform you a considerable number of employees will be reassigned or released June 30th. We've been in contract negotiations since January. No mention of potential layoffs, reduction in force. Anything has come up in six months. So is it surprising to the teachers? It was a surprise and a shock. The teachers union contends the letter is a ploy to force teachers to accept the last offer of a 2% pay increase. Well, as we were just telling you, Baltimore school employees are wondering if Superintendent Waldron praise warning of layoffs is a real threat or merely a bargaining ploy. In his commentary tonight, Michael Esker says no one is entirely certain, but almost everyone is wondering why did he have to break the news right before a three day holiday? There were 10,000 school employees who got letters from Doctor and Pray warning of the possibility of reassignment or release at the end of next month. And not one of the employees knows how serious the threat really is. Having sent the letter, Dr. Emery immediately took off for Israel, where he's presumably seeking diplomatic immunity from those employees. Many of these people, including teachers, feel a mix of suspicion and anger and think and prays, bluffing to keep everybody in financial line. And Pray says it's no threat, just a measure of budget adjustments and the system's attempt to move more money and staff from headquarters to individual schools. Thus, we come to that most unfortunate aspect of education. Do we do what's right for the kids, or do we allow people on both sides of the bargaining to think first of flexing their political power? Well, having one of your late bills turned over to a collection agency is bad enough, but when you are told it will cost you hundreds more because it got to that level, then you know it's time to get Calvin. You knew it would happen if he didn't somehow pay that long overdue bill. It has been turned over to a collection agency and now it is threatening to take you to court. It does cost money to turn a bill over for collection. Some agencies charge the dentist as much as half of what they collect. And there may be court costs and attorney's fees. But that doesn't mean that those costs are your responsibility. They're simply the cost of doing business. But if you agreed to the extra charges before beginning treatment, either by signing a fee agreement or being told of them without objecting, then the worst pain you'll feel won't be in the dentist's chair but in your checkbook. Maybe what Elaine needs is a system like the one devised by Dr. Matthew Weir of University of Maryland Hospital. That system starts here with the files on the chair where he sits. When the seat is not terribly comfortable. It means you have to do something. And then I just reach right underneath myself and I'm ready to go to work right away.
