Well, there's a lot of opportunity for rhubarb to get sunburn today and for the next few days. Can you say record heat? Record heat. Record heat. And of course, we'll explain this in just a second. But 60 degrees right now is the temperature recorded in downtown Baltimore. We're actually looking at 66 degrees here on TV Hill. But this all changes for the hot tomorrow and it will be that way for the next few days. And of course, we'll have all of that in the details and the complete forecast coming up in just about five minutes. All right. Time to the ball. Sounds like. All right. Let's check out what people are talking about this morning. Governor Glenn Denning, Sunny is free on his own recognizance this morning after being arrested yesterday. 19 year old Raymond Glendenning was stopped at 230 yesterday morning in Prince George's County. Apparently failed. Several sobriety test was arrested and his car was impounded. Now, this is a picture of Glendening taken a couple of years ago with his parents. County police tell Eyewitness News they were responding to a burglar alarm in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue when they saw a car in the parking lot there. Raymond Glendenning got out and officers say he was acting strangely. Governor and Mrs. Glendening issued this statement about the incident. They received the call. They say every parent dreads that police issued their son citations for an alcohol related driving offense.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115847/file/219721#t=142.16,227.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115847/file/219721/transcript/62500/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They say their first duty now must be as parents by offering Raymond Love guidance and support. As you saw on Eyewitness News, the three year old is one of several people who was rushed to the hospital after a school bus jumped the curb and hit them. The accident happened at Patterson and Morley Street in East Baltimore. Fortunately, none of those injuries are life threatening. She was considered the unofficial first lady of the Schaefer administration. Hilda Thomas Snooks died last week. Last night, friends and family remembered her at her wake in 2000. Dennis Edwards has the exclusive story through the eyes of a man who called her a special friend for decades. Hilda Mays, Snooks and Donald Schaefer were together more than 41 years through city council, the mayor's office and on to the governor's mansion and beyond. Hilda May was his constant companion, friend and confidant. He was the love of her life who stayed by her side till death took her away the other day. And there was no one there. She and I. I think she made up her mind. It's time for me to go. And she left. Which I thought was nice. Donald Schaefer's sadness is eased by the joy that comes when a friend passes in peace. That woman came to the wake at Rux Funeral Home, along with countless others. He listened to their stories and I think enjoyed every word. Donald says Hilda may. His greatest accomplishment was in Annapolis when she supervised the remodeling of the governor's mansion. In the process, she helped some cooks understand what it meant to make real food. I said to her, Hilda made, I don't have any food. We like to eat. So she went out to cook together and she said, We want some some sauerkraut and some mashed potatoes and pork. Well, one cook didn't know what SA Kraut was, so she had to teach him. Hilda Mae's wait continues on Sunday. The funeral is Tuesday. There will be a lot of final farewells then, but not for Donald Schaefer. He and Hilda may said their goodbyes on Friday. Perhaps the greatest honor a friend can have is to be there at the end. Donald Schaefer was there and then stood by gently as Hilda Mae went on her way. I said my final goodbye. When she died, it was when she slipped off and I said, Well, old girl, you're gone. And the drought is causing problems now for animals and crops, too. The drought continues to pass the land in our area and now it's causing big trouble for animals. Also, farmer Dan Newcomer is making hay for his animals, but he says the quality isn't quite there. He adds the higher cost at the farm means higher costs for you at the grocery store. And when will the rain come? Eyewitness News has special coverage all this week and tomorrow and Tuesday, Eyewitness News will air a special two part series on the drought. But in this hour, I'll have, of course, for your exclusive first money forecast coming up in just about two minutes. Okay. While the interleague series between the O's and the Phillies is now split one and one, last night, the Orioles won despite almost giving up the game. Rob Duke got a two run homer off Mike Timlin. Well, tomorrow's probably one of those days that any of the older schools may very well be letting out early. You know, air conditioning problems. We're expecting to get up to 95 degrees tomorrow. They could very easily get up to 95. Humidity is starting to increase now because the winds are starting to shift. They've been off the water, so it's been cooler. But now they're coming in from the Gulf and now it's going to start getting hot and sticky and where we've had dry, hot weather and now it's going to be sticky and humid and hazy and the whole bit. That's Baltimore in the summer. Yeah, Really? It's only spring. Exactly. Exactly. You know, of course, it's still about two calendar weeks away from summer, but we're getting all the effect of it right now. So just know that if you're sending someone out tomorrow to school, it's very likely that they may be coming back home. Or maybe just keep them in. Just keep them in under the fan. Well, right now, we're looking at 62 degrees reported in downtown Baltimore, 66, as you see here on TV Hill, 50 in Salisbury, 52 along the ocean. Still, the effect of the cooler sea breeze keeping things very, very comfortable. Again, that may very well change. 65 in Richmond, 58 in Washington, 56 in Hagerstown right now. We're looking at 52 at Mount Airy, 57 and Reisterstown 51 in Westminster. What's going on? Basically in the center of the country, as we saw yesterday, a lot of heavy thunderstorm activity ballooning out there, just kind of popping up. But a lot of that has since moved to the northeast. It went right on into Canada, didn't affect as many states as we thought. There were the possibility of about 15 states seeing severe thunderstorms. But there is still a line of shower activity extending, say, from Minnesota right on down through Texas. This system could mean some showers for us if it starts to add up to, you know, just heavier storms combining with the moisture coming in from the Gulf. Later in the week, we'll be watching this for the next few days as it starts to make its way to the northeast. But for right now, we're looking at high pressure, adding with some humidity turning into some very, very hot days. Again, today we're looking at a comfortable 86 comfortable because we'll still be dry. But tomorrow into Tuesday, into Wednesday, record heat, the record set back in 1984 is 94 degrees. We're expecting record temperatures at 95 or above. And the heat index will be in effect, of course, because the humidity will start to climb. So keep that in mind tomorrow if you're going down to the beach today, just know that you probably or if you're already down at the beach, just know that you'll probably have a very comfortable day with the sea breeze. Scott, can you get a shot of these delicious, juicy red strawberries? George, how's the drought affecting you farmers in Baltimore County? Well, it's pretty bad. We really need rain. Bad. It's about the only thing it's good for is getting in hay. And the strawberries are sweet because of it, but they're not as big as normal. But other than that, we're really looking for rain. The crew of the shuttle Discovery returned to Florida this morning after a ten day visit to the space station. All right. Deploy. Touchdown! You can hear everything. Yeah, absolutely. But while in space, the astronauts released Star Shine, a sphere covered with tiny mirrors that were polished by schoolchildren and will track its movements over the next eight months. That's about the size of a basketball. We're told it's a parent's dream, but few of us get to live it. Two years ago, a group of Bolton Hill parents got together and started school for their children. Now, as Dennis Edwards reports, this is Dennis kind of a show, isn't it? As Dennis Ross reports, this school has become a model for community involvement and is shaping tomorrow. Our classes are limited to 20 students, so it gives us the chance to have more individualization with the children, get more one on one teaching done. We put fliers around the neighborhood, held some community meetings, met around my dining room table to talk about the kind of school we wanted and just put one foot in front of the other. And here we are at Midtown. Wendy Salmon and a handful of parents founded Midtown. All of their children are students here. Berniece Harrison has three children in kindergarten and fourth grade. I love the idea that I can be involved. I can be here with my kids. It's very creative. It's not just reading, writing and arithmetic. Midtown Academy is also unique because it has no principal or assistant principal. Teachers tell me they have a lot more freedom. I love it because if there's something that I see as a special need for my class, I know that I can do that and it will be accepted by the parents and the other staff members without having to go through our principal or vice principal. We've had wonderful news. Pat scores our third grade. Our aggregate scores are the highest in the city. We know parents and teachers like Midtown, but what difference is it making in the lives of students? I like it because we have extra activities and we get to go places that some schools don't. As part of this community commitment in the coming year, Eyewitness News will continue to bring you more stories like this one that show how others in our community are shaping tomorrow. Here's something to keep in mind when you're eating, right. Just because Red's brown does not mean it's full of fiber. Whole grain breads are brown or and usually have more fiber than white breads. But manufacturers sometimes add caramel coloring to white breads, giving it a look that can be deceiving. It is kind of a misunderstood beast right now. What's the motivation? What's the purpose? Well, yeah, that's a good question, because we forget from year to year interleague play. This is this is the third year for it. But my opinion, even though the game sold out last night, they had more than 48,000 fans there, which was an all time regular season record for Oriole Park in Camden Yards. Interleague play really only matters in a couple of different cities. I think you've got the Mets, Yankees, Subway Series that it matters. You've got maybe the Cubs Cleveland series that's going on this weekend. You've got the Athletics and the Giants out west. But I don't think anybody really cares about the Phillies and the Orioles in terms of interleague play. I don't think anybody cares really about the Astros and the Brewers, the Pirates and the White Sox. So I think limited there is limited interest in interleague play around the country. But it's neat to see the Phillies or a team like the Mets or somebody come in here and well, so far they did because last night, but they beat them on Friday night. It's neat to see, but I think it has very little impact around the league. So you get to see some of your favorite players, like the Mark McGuire is might come in like. Right. Like you wouldn't get to see. Right. Exactly. Although Philadelphia doesn't have any of those players. Right. Right. Okay. Good enough. You talked about last night's game and the Orioles. And then Mike Timlin comes in and tries to close it. We just saw he gave up the big home run and then all of a sudden the Phillies had the lead in the top half of the night. Then the Orioles battled back the line up to Shields, beats out a Tapper to first base safe as a pitcher. We raise a lot of small crops like blackberries and peaches, and that's the kind that you take care of the small crops. For us, corn takes a lot of water and you don't have a lot of yield on it. Baltimore's farmers market gives consumers a chance to get fresh greens right off the Maryland farms. But it's green of another kind that Maryland farmers are most concerned about. If it stays this dry, it could be devastating. Well, granted, everything is going really bad. How are you finding the produce today? So far, so good. I couldn't believe the prices on the flowers and the fruit, which is excellent. From berries to begonias. You'll find it all here under the Jones Falls Expressway every Sunday morning. Come on down. And the best chance we have is really scattered thunderstorms. You know, you get those hot, humid conditions that build up. Some folks will get afternoon thunderstorms. And in fact, the dry ground is going to help to give us some high temperatures this week because cooler ground heats up, less dry ground heats up more, and that's going to become a problem. Let's look aside right now that this weekend has turned out to be really delightful. Our afternoon shot down across the Inner harbor. That's Lazaretto Point down there at the foot of Clinton Street. And on the far side, that is the USS Comfort, the hospital ship that is stationed here in Baltimore. And as we pull back, you can see just a beautiful afternoon across the Baltimore region. Hardly a cloud to be found in the sky. Looking at it from the satellite down, some clouds across New England, but that's the nearest place that had any cloudy skies, much less rain to speak of in the mid-Atlantic to New England region. What we're looking at is a continuation of the dominance of a high pressure system that has been with us all the way through the weekend. And in fact, as that high pressure system slides off the coast, it's going to kick in a southwesterly flow and begin to increase our temperatures and increase humidities. Not so right now. It's really quite pleasant. 83 degrees. Our temperature right here in the picnic area on TV Hill, down into the low to mid 70s at the ocean. And just about everybody with tons of sunshine as we close out. This what turned out to be a pretty nice weekend weather wise. High temperature today, 86 degrees, five above normal. Notice in the Midwest, that area of activity with clouds for some heavy thunderstorms and precip there. But notice how that whole pattern is sliding north, more so than coming east. The high pressure system that's been dominating our weather with clockwise circulation as it slides off will be drawing in heat and humidity. Where do you see the five day forecast starting tomorrow? 95 degrees. If we do hit that, that will tie the record and that is a substantial increase over the temperatures today with the humidity tonight. Not too bad, though. Mainly clear skies for tonight. Pleasantly mild, overnight low at 65 degrees. Then tomorrow, the heat begins to build in sunshine, much hotter, more humid, 95 than the five day. It's going to be a scorcher by the time we get to Tuesday, 97. Wednesday, the best chance for thunderstorms. Also a chance Thursday and Friday. But we're really talking chance. And if they do occur, very likely right now, they'll just be scattered. So unfortunately, we've got the heat coming in. We don't really see a lot of rain. So a real summery week coming up, Pat. Eyewitness News has complete coverage, beginning with Kathy Fowler, who's in our Newsroom now with the latest on the three year old Kathy. Well, Pat, three small children were home with their father this evening when police say he took his eye off one of them for just a second. And that's all it took a second for a three year old little boy to find a loaded gun in the home. Get on with it winning here. But it exited in the bag. Neighbors were horrified to see a little three year old boy carried out of this Highland town home with a gunshot wound to his head. He was awake and crying, and that was good. Neighbors tell Eyewitness News While the mother was at work, the father was at home with his son and two daughters. The father told neighbors that his three year old son asked to go to the bathroom downstairs in the basement. The next thing he heard, a loud bang. Neighbors say the father told them he ran downstairs thinking something fell only to see that his son had found his semiautomatic handgun and accidentally shot himself. It was rushed to shock trauma where he died from bullet wounds in the chest and stomach. Police tell Eyewitness News the victim had been involved in an argument earlier in the day. Two Baltimore congressman might argue that these shootings prove they're right on target. In a tragic irony, Congressman Ben Cardin and Elijah Cummings were right outside shock trauma calling for gun control legislation just an hour before that teenager was brought there and died. They were urging the House to pass the bill already approved by the Senate. That would, among other things, require child safety locks on all handguns. So let's go look at the weather outside right now because this may be the last of the real pleasant evenings that we see for a few days now. And certainly as it has been nice this weekend, it is really quite nice temperature wise and even humidity wise across the area right now. Looking across downtown from our sky eye on the tower, we'll go up to the satellite, look down and look at the clear sky conditions that we have across the area. We have had all day notice from the motion of the clouds of the huge clockwise circulation. That's the give away for a high pressure system and high pressure systems generally associated with nice weather, bringing us a lack of clouds and sunshine, but also decidedly a lack of rain. I'm looking for a high temperature tomorrow of 95 degrees, which if we reach that number, will equal the record for the day.
