In Tripoli, Yasser Arafat and his men apparently won't be leaving today. Israeli gunboats are blockading Tripoli and this morning struck back hard in Arafate positions. The attack on the Muslim positions in and around Tripoli was in retaliation for the Jerusalem bus bomb earlier this week. Greek ships that will evacuate Arafatt and his man are supposed to arrive today, but the Palestinians expect a delay because of the morning attack. Two more Marines have been wounded by Muslim gunfire in Beirut. The Marines have spent most of the day on their highest alert status. They've been fired on at least twice, and in one case, destroyed the source of the Moslem gunfire. The continued attack comes as the Pentagon and the White House try to decide on a new location that might give the Marines in Beirut more protection. What about the weather? It's, you know, we're just in that, it changes season if you want to put it that way. We call for it, if you happen to see a 630 this morning, we call for a little more sunshine than we have seen, truthfully, so far today. But I'm thinking we're still going to see some sunshine this afternoon. Some clouds are still remaining in the area from a storm that's way away from us. Truth, we thought they'd have blown out by now, but I think we'll see a little sunshine by this afternoon, and let's take a look at your current conditions. This morning... It was a chilly one. There was frost everywhere, on little birds, frozen to tree limbs, on my windows. Warmed up now though, 40 in the city, 41 in the suburbs, winds from the south-southeast at seven miles an hour, humidity 65%. Barometer is 30 40 holding steady. You'll have a low tide Fort McKenna this afternoon 3 38 high tide 10 42 Sunsets tonight at 4 44 p.m And just in case you're curious if you happen to keep track of when our sunrise and sunset are you've noticed It's been 444 for a while We're moving toward winter the actual first day of winter which of course will be the longest day of the year and from That point on December 22nd on The days will start getting a little bit longer and a little bit longer. We'll start getting back to sunsets at 4 45 46 and on back up till nine o'clock during daylight savings time. Here those clouds course we're talking about. Let's bring in the radar sky live right now. It's all ground clear. That's all we're showing any returns up here in Pennsylvania and particularly this one here near Taney town. It airborne precipitation. Not a whole lot is falling. Now let's bring in sky track is satellite photo high pressure down to the south. Here was our thinking earlier today. That this high pressure would actually build itself much further into the area than it This is a big area of low pressure in a cold front out in the Ohio Valley stretching on out into the Midwest. And these clouds are actually blowing over from this cold front, but we thought the high would form a block. Up north far enough to keep us in a decent amount of sunshine today. Once again, if you look very closely at the Maryland area, you'll notice that the cloud line itself is just right over us, and this is a very high overcast, not thick and dense, hardly rain producing at all. This is a good chance of some sunshine. By tonight, this frontal system, the low will pass up to our north, drag the cold front through the area. We're not expecting hardly any shower activity tonight. In the forecast, we will call for a chance of a sprinkle, or, of course, a flurry if it happens late enough. But it shouldn't be any real big deal. And once we get through this cold frontal passage, high pressure, which is situated right up to the northwest, is going to move down, start controlling our weather, but it's not going to be a totally sunny day tomorrow. We're expecting this frontal system to hang just off of the coast, kick some high clouds back in. So it'll be a partly sunny day, with temperatures still remaining into the 40s. By Sunday, it looks like another frontal system will come through. We're into it. Just enough for flux here, just enough of a change in seasons, if you want to put it that way. It's an unscientific term for an actual weather discussion, but for us it'll do. That things are starting to whip themselves along now, and like a summer pattern, we'll have three days of sunshine. Here comes a front, three days a sunshine. It's about every other day now. There's a very strong jet stream blowing now, almost directly from west to east. And that's why this frontal passage itself is going to be relatively dry. There's not a whole lot of chance for the air as it moves from west to east to pick up moisture from the south. So this is the pattern we're in right now. Just about every other day, day and a half, a frontal system moving through the area. Okay. Here's your AccuWeather forecast for today. It's going to, we're going to say partly to mostly cloudy. The partly cloudy though could be determined in some circles, some literary circles, as partly sunny. So we'll see a little sun, high of 42 degrees for tonight. Look for partly cloudy skies. Low of 32 degrees. Tomorrow, partly sunny day, high of 44. But the National Institute of Health says it has not found the virus in waters taken from various health spa hot tubs. They point out that putting chlorine and bromine in hot tub water kills the virus. Spas routinely use those chemicals to guard against infection. In many cases, children have been calling, particularly in the case of a telephone ad for a men's magazine. Another sign of the times from the Census Bureau, the agency says the majority of small children with working mothers are now cared for outside the home. The Bureau says part of the reason is that fewer people are now available to take of children because of a growing number of separated and divorced families. Tonight as U.S. Marines in Beirut remain on their highest alert, news of a possible new ceasefire and some scathing criticism of U. S. Military performance there. ABC News has obtained preliminary findings from a report on the Beirute bomb blast compiled by a special military commission. The report says the Marine Corps was grossly negligent in providing security at its Beiru headquarters. It says the soldiers were too concentrated in one place, making them an easy target for terrorists. In all, 240 Marines were killed in that tragic bombing. The report goes on to confirm what many already fear it could happen again, unless something's done. Reagan administration officials today briefed about 40 House members on security for U.S. Troops in Beirut. After the two-hour closed-door recession, several House Democrats said they were now convinced more than ever that American troops should be pulled out of Lebanon. The ninth fire victim was in Anne Arundel County. Investigators are still trying to find out what started that fire. Well, we have done this before, but we will repeat it again. Some tips from the fire department. In an effort to prevent a repeat of this morning's tragedy. Don't let children play with matches. Understand the situation that you're in. Don't leave food on the stove unattended. Check fireplaces before using and make sure a screen is always used. This is important. Make a regular check of batteries in your smoke detector and be sure you have a smoke detector. Don't store combustible items near a furnace. Don't put any items near electric heaters. Remember that portable kerosene heaters are illegal in Baltimore, and be careful with Christmas tree lights. Keep the tree watered at the base so it won't become brittle and become a fire hazard. It's Christmas time. You've only got two more weekends to shop. This is your time to do it. Looks like the weather this weekend may cooperate at least 50% of the time. We're getting some little shower activity in the region right now, mixed with a couple of light snowflakes, but nothing to get worried about. The temperature's still at 40 degrees. In fact, let's take a look at those current conditions under cloudy skies. A little bit of light precip here in Baltimore. At 40, the wind's southeast. At five, humidity, 60%. The barometer falling from 30.30 inches, and the tides tomorrow look like that. Your Sunrise 715 sets again 444. We had an increasing cloud cover all day long, and tonight the city clouds, but they're not gonna diminish the beauty of these lovely lights. Some of the trees downtown have been decorated. They are just really quite nice to see. You get down to the inner harbor at night, it's just beautiful, it really is. Let's take a look at that national radar. You see a band of precip from about New York. Through the Baltimore, central Maryland region into extreme western North Carolina. This is the advanced precipitation ahead of a cold front, which is just gonna graze our region. It's gonna move down to our south and stay there. We're not gonna get real cold air tomorrow, seasonably cool for this time of year. To our north, however, across the Great Lakes, extremely cold temperatures in the northern plains, temperatures 13, 14 below zero now in northern Minnesota, International Falls. Some more precip, light stuff now over Montana, Idaho. That's headed our way, along with some stuff over New Mexico. These two are gonna get together in the storm. Let's take a look at our state map right now. Local radar shows showers out to the west, and they are not really heavy, but there are some areas reporting some precip touching the ground. Dulles had about a tenth of an inch of rain, mixed with a couple flakes of snow in the last hour or so. We could see it, a light shower here in Baltimore over the next hour or two, and perhaps even to about three or four o'clock in the morning. Temperatures here are still above freezing everywhere. In fact, even some low 40s in DC, 43. Winds tomorrow out of the northeast, 8 to 15 miles an hour. There is a travelers advisory in effect for Garrett County because later on tonight, temperatures should drop low enough. Perhaps there'll be some freezing drizzle along with some snow out there. Don't expect any of that stuff here. Looking at our cloud cover tonight, we see clouds here in the east from Pennsylvania through Maryland into the North Carolina region. Further west in Ohio, it clears out. This is tomorrow's weather for us. Beautiful sunshine, a nice day. And then the clouds out west start to gather and move east as a storm will develop over the Central States tomorrow. Tomorrow's map shows that storm smack dab in the middle of the country right here, picking up Gulf moisture, very mild temperatures in the South, as you can see, 50s, 60s, even some 70s down in Florida. Cold temperatures up to the North. These are highs, 12 below zero up in Winnipeg, six degrees at James Bay, a very cold high pressure system, but it's gonna keep the cold just up to our North. We'll be on the borderline between cold, 31 in Bradford, 56. In eastern North Carolina tomorrow. As the storm develops, heads east, we look for showers to break out Sunday evening, or Sunday afternoon. Here's our forecast. Partly sunny tomorrow, 46, a nice day. Rain developing late Sunday. Memphis with a balanced scoring throughout. Stamankiewicz had two, Tacoma beat Pittsburgh eight to three. They're next in Sunday in our first televised game, two o'clock here on Channel 13. High School Hope, Calvert Hall, finally got their shot at Dunbar in the Beltway Classic and they did the job. Seventy-two, sixty-two winners tonight. We'll take a look at the Poets first on the attack. To Derek Lewis, to James Keith, to Reggie McNeil, up and in. Now Terry Dozier in the lane will miss the little flip shot. But watch the great tip from Mike Brown. That's the kind of talent they have. A nice crowd at the Towson Center tonight by the way.
