I'll tell you about that a little bit. But coming off the Great Lakes, we could see some flurries. No storms, no snowstorms, no accumulation, but just some flurries around the area late in the day, closer to sunset, which is around 430 or so. But if you're going outside, just know that all day long we only getting up to about 40 degrees and there are some winds to contend with. This is how it shapes up for us. She was rushed to St Agnes Hospital and later died. Investigators say her single mother, Chanel Smith, fell asleep. Cooking neighbor Nikki Hart holds the toddler's drenched toys in her kitchen, along with memories of consoling a frantic mother. I came back in to get her something to put on because, you know, she was outside and she didn't have any clothes on. For Jim Duncan, it was a call to action. And she was screaming her baby, her baby was upstairs before police before firefighters even got to the scene. Jim Duncan was here. He tried getting this door opened by breaking the window and reaching around, but the doorknob was just too hot. So finally he and another neighbor broke open this door, but they only got so far. So you can keep this in mind when you're in your kitchen and you're trying to prevent fires. Keep towels and pot holders away from your stove. Don't reach over the stove while you're cooking. Keep your pot handles turned inward and never leave cooking food unattended. And we ask you to please check your smoke detector to make sure that it works properly. Investigators tell Eyewitness news it looks like a cigaret set fire to the woman's knitting as she and her son, her grandson, tried to fight the fire. Her son is in critical condition this morning. The children from kindergarten to fifth grade were challenged to read 2000 books between December 1st and the 21st. Their reward, they help themselves become better readers, and they're helping other children, too. Teacher Cheryl Watts came up with the idea. Very likely will be resurrected tomorrow or continued tomorrow because we're looking for winds from the west to northwest at 12 to 25 knots. Given the winds in the last couple of days, as much as a two foot chop is possible, 42 degrees. The bay water temperature, it's up three degrees from yesterday. It was down to 39 yesterday. Here's a satellite view showing again, a continued northwesterly flow in the upper atmosphere. And that's been the pump. It's brought us the chill over the last few days. And it looks like it's going to continue to give us seasonable to somewhat below seasonal temperatures sort of over the next five days. No real terrible cold weather. But then we don't see any real breaks to bring us milder weather either. There the light snow flurries coming as a result of that northwesterly flow, particularly in the higher elevations west of the mountains. Here's where we are. And notice again, some cloudiness coming across. No strong precip expected out of this, but we do have, again, colder air coming in to the region.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136508/file/253094#t=4556.95,4645.54"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136508/file/253094/transcript/71211/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I don't think tomorrow is going to be as warm as today because there goes that colder air sagging through the mid-Atlantic states, a disturbance traveling south of us. How about the number seven, seven, seven, six, seven sacks today? But the numbers that counted the most were the ones on the scoreboard. Ravens 22 Bengals. Nothing to the delight of many Ravens fans. Me too. Today's final home game precedes the season finale next weekend at New England. Peanuts, Peanuts, peanuts. Following a slow start, but entering this game with a three game streak, the Ravens are merrily rolling along this holiday season. It's about time and trading up in common. They're going to make it. Dr. Bob is live in the Eyewitness News Outback with the first warning on the white stuff. Hi, Dr. Bob. Hey, Pat. Yes, it is kind of it's cold enough out here to support some snow temperatures in the mid-thirties. A number of you have called the newsroom to report that you have seen some snow flurries in your neighborhood. And in fact, that was expected and it is not going to amount to anything, although since it is a Christmas weekend, it is kind of nice to see a little bit of the white stuff falling. Let me show you the radar to pinpoint where this stuff is. First warning radar shows those light blue areas are the areas precip, some of it not reaching the ground, some of it coming to the ground. But it is all very light spread, mostly north of the city, although out in Howard County, we had a few reports from that direction, some snow flurries.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136508/file/253094#t=5290.19,5393.52"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136508/file/253094/transcript/71211/annotation/50","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And what this is, is a leading edge of another surge of colder air coming into the area. Well, tonight, Eyewitness News and the Maryland State Police take you on a ride along as we go in search of safety behind the wheel, looking for speeders, people who are making improper lane changes, overall aggressive drivers out here this evening. Also, we're looking forward to just the holiday weekend, looking for toxic to drivers as well. Trooper First Class David Dwyer patrols one of the busiest sections of I-95 through Maryland. Tonight, he offers Eyewitness News useful information on driving throughout this holiday week. He wants to ensure that you arrive at your destination alive when you're traveling. If you do come across an aggressive drive or somebody who's tailgating you or giving you problems on the road or flashing their lights at you instead of creating more of a problem, just slide over to your next lane. Get out of the way. Let them go by. State police say the driver of a car which crashed here in Cecil County yesterday killing four people did just about everything wrong. Evidence of alcohol, high speeds and lack of safety belts all contributed to the multiple fatalities. People traveling home are tired. Also, we're looking for the people who've been drinking this evening, late parties or coming back from the football games. It's been a busy weekend and you don't have to be driving drunk to be dangerous on the highway. One of the problems is going to be the tired drivers who've been driving for 5 or 6 hours on the road. Instead of pulling over, they feel they can make it the extra couple of miles down the road. And sometimes they're not all fall asleep. Reckless driving can make you your own worst enemy, but there's an even more sinister threat this holiday season. A terrorism alert may help the FBI track down a man they've been trying to get their hands on since December 14th. With one suspected terrorist already in custody under heavy guard. Federal investigators are now on the trail of his alleged accomplice, Abdelmadjid Rahmani. Only one day after authorities released his picture, a ticket agent at Horizon Airlines in Bellingham, Washington, recognized the man and called authorities. The employee reported Doumani bought a plane ticket at the airport Friday for a flight from Bellingham to Seattle with a connection to Las Vegas. He flew to Seattle, but it's not known if he made it to Nevada. The agent reportedly told the FBI document he had a French passport and paid in Canadian dollars. He was also said to be argumentative and sarcastic. Damani is believed to be the man who stayed at this Vancouver motel with Ahmad Rassam just days before he was caught trying to cross the border with 20 pounds of explosives. And I see people actually practice Kwanzaa, a celebration more than 20 million people observe worldwide. To all those who box we stand on before libation, as they say. The word Kwanzaa is Swahili. It means first fruit. And since its inception 30 years ago by a university professor at California State, people of African descent have practiced its seven principles known as the News Asaba. One candle a day is lit for seven days. Unity is the first, and the elemental principle of Kwanzaa is the basis of everything. Observers explore themes of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity. And in my mind, Imani means the centerpiece of the celebration includes a display of corn, the Mandi. The Mozelle is the past, the present, and the future is what is planted is the harvest and is the food as well. Gifts for the children, the African flag and fruit. Things that are rooted. This is just showing of that is where your basis of skills and speech so that you will succeed through storytelling in dance history is told and the command the taki say it's a lesson that flows for everyone. We have a whole history that Kwanzaa at time helps us understand. Tim Williams, Jay Z, Eyewitness News. Six more days of Kwanzaa, right? So it runs from the 26th through the first, right? And every year it's the same thing, right? It runs seven days, right? Every year. Yeah, well, I learned a lot of. Hey, hey, hey. That's why we're here. To teach people that. Let's go. So it was a pretty shot. Yeah. Hey, look, we've already alluded to the fact we have a little bit of snow in the area. And this weekend, of course, it was a Christmas weekend. And as we want it now. That's right. Yeah, but it's not as we said, it's not going to amount to anything. It's nice to see, but it's something we haven't seen any so far this winter, have we? That's been on vacation. Let's go ahead and look at first morning radar and I'll show you where it is again. This is updated from our earlier scan that we showed you. And a quick look at the distribution there shows that we've got some snow and it's very light falling to the north of the area and up through, say, northern Carroll County, up here through northern Baltimore County and also down here, say, Howard County into Anne Arundel County. So there's a little bit of snow falling. It's not going to amount to anything. I don't expect to see any slippery conditions develop from this. I would even be surprised if we ended up seeing any on grassy surfaces by the time tomorrow rolls around. Something we did see, officials say, a week or so ago. Temperature wise, though, as I mentioned before, when you're in the mid 30s, it doesn't have to be 32 for us to have snow as long as the ground level temperature is around 34 to 36. Snow coming from the colder air aloft can survive to the ground. And that's kind of what we're seeing with these snow flurries. Cool spot right now, as expected, out in the west, Cumberland at 28. We're at 35 here on TV Hill and downtown 37 degrees, 33 at Rock Hall, 31 at Westminster. High temperature today actually got back to more normal numbers. 44 degrees is our high today. So whether you define cold as being cold in a relative sense or cold relative to normal, I guess you have your choice of how you describe today. And again, as has been the case throughout the last two weeks to ten days, we continue over the central part of the country and pushing into the eastern part of the country where we are this strong northerly flow, which has produced snow and fair amounts of snow in the Great Lakes region. But as far as we're concerned, it's just bringing in some clouds and a continued influx of cold weather. These are the flurries generally west of the mountains, occasionally creeping across the mountains. That's what we're seeing, not going to amount to any accumulation. What it really is telling us, though, is that there's another area of cold air moving in. There goes that front, moving on by. And we're going to see temperatures tomorrow that are going to be, again, colder, back to about ten degrees below normal tonight, though, patchy clouds, windy. It's kind of chilly out there. A flurry or two, 24, the overnight low. And it's not going to warm up, but ten degrees tomorrow topping out at 34 degrees. The mix of clouds and sunshine on the five day forecast will rise back up to normal. Temperatures by midweek. Actually get a little bit warmer than that on Thursday and look for a possibility of some light showers as we close out 1999 on Friday. Patents there. Thanks, Doctor Bob. Unquestionably, the victory against the Bengals today ranks right near the top when it comes to momentous franchise victories. It's the first shutout ever by the Ravens as the purple troopers shut down the Bengals 20 to nothing for their fourth consecutive win. We had to come in and we had to win in December in order to give ourselves a chance to get in the playoffs. The fact that it didn't turn out that way really makes no difference to us. The mindset has been you need to win in December. You need to finish on an upbeat in order to go into the playoffs. And we held up our end of it and that's going to pay dividends down the line. We control our own destiny and down the line, you know, you got to win in December and we're winning in December and that's what it takes to get in the playoffs.
