This is eyewitness news with Don Scott. Whether with Marty Bass. Some Morgan State students are statehouse bound and they're walking quickly because they feel the state is moving too slowly. Today's march from Morgan to state circle is stage three or four in an ongoing public protest to stop what they see as their school's chronic understaffing and long, slow slide into disrepair. This morning, as the rain was pouring down on Morgan State's campus. Several students were inside Truth Hall, firming up some spur of the moment plans to march to Annapolis to protest the slow negotiations with the state of Maryland. We have some burning issues up in their security positions that we desperately need in faculty positions for next semester. And the state has not made a commitment to us since our protest. When you last went to the statehouse, they said. Don't worry, these things take time. You don't believe that? No, because we've seen the amount of time that it is taken and we haven't received anything. For instance, we had a security plan and proposal and the state expert on security, Bishop Robinson, reviewed our plan. Now the state is asking for the same plan to be submitted formalities, and it's just a waiting game. So they have to commit to us. When you say March, do you mean what? Walk? I mean, what? 32 miles long for maybe five or six. Whoever comes along and joins, they're welcome. But we do not have a student body meeting because we know the students are in exams concentrating on their work. So we can't take away and be a detriment to their success. The group that worked for passage of Maryland's so-called Saturday Night Special Law says it has been a success. Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse today released a handgun elimination scorecard. The group says 134 dangerous small handguns are now barred from this bar from sale in the state, including two of the top five crime guns in the country. This scorecard shows that the enactment of the Saturday night special law 1988 was an important step in our fight against violent crime in Maryland. We have barred the sale of many low quality handguns, which are only used by criminals. This law is not going to have any effect on street crime because criminals do not want small, low quality guns. They want high quality, large caliber guns like police carry. Later this week, the marathoners against handgun abuse will appear before the handgun roster board to appeal the inclusion of 35 other guns. The board decided to be allowed to be sold in the state. Shots were fired and three of the four suspects were arrested. They hit at 1031 pair entering Charles Jewelers, where three employees were taken to the back of the store and secured with duct tape. The other pair burst into Baily Banks in Biddle. The workers there were handcuffed. They took jewelry and cash, ran out the door and sped off in this van. Mall security officers spotted off duty and Arundel Police Lieutenant Gary Barr. So I began to follow the van and in the meantime notified radio and they advised me they're involved in armed robbery and shots were fired with police in pursuit. The robbers pulled up on this lawn and jumped out of the van. This man was raising his garage door. His wife was driving down the street. And then they started running toward the garage door. And I closed the garage door real quick. Then a few seconds later, I heard four or five shots at my front door and I heard them break in the front door. So I opened the garage door. A follow up tonight on the newest members of Baltimore County search and rescue teams. You may remember Mary and Barney from last November when they were only pups. It was ideal conditions in that there was little or no wind blowing, little or no current. And the dog signaled that the victim was right there. They sent a diver over the side. The new plan calls for the school programing decisions to be made by committees that individual schools. It's called school based management. So what is it? Paula Tall is known as a teacher who makes learning exciting. Four Times Square root, nine go is No. One, two, three, four, five. She coaxes and cajoles and makes learning fun by literally drawing information out of her students. Very good. But it's not always easy because as the principal of Cherry Hill Middle School puts it, some of her students sometimes come to school without much motivation to learn. Families have to put first things first. And in communities such as this, where folks are hard pressed to show the tools to eke out an earning, they don't spend a lot of time with what happened in school today. Under a plan, the city school board will soon be considering, schools like Cherry Hill Middle will be able to tailor a program to address the specific needs of their students. It's called school based management, and it has teachers like Paula Toll cautiously optimistic. It sounds good. I'm hoping that there is something that comes out of that, not only words. So the folks here would be pleased if the whole school system adopts a flexible plan. Definitely willing to give it a try. But the major question is money. We need funding. We need state funding and we need city funding. We should probably point out that the switch to school based management has not yet been made. The plan still awaits approval from the city school board. However, that might pop up again a little bit later on this evening. Just a chance of a few little sprinkles of showers developing. Most of the rain that we saw is through the region. But some of these showers east of Ocean City are moving in this direction, actually toward Dover and toward the Delaware Bay. All I know that he was walking down the street one night from his girlfriend's house and he could turn the corner. And this young boy called him. He turned around. They shot him. That's all I could do. You couldn't catch up with her. So I decided to write you. We agreed with Miss Morton that a year was much too long to wait and that certainly something could be done to either speed up delivery or speed up a refund. John Wilkinson would not agree to an on camera interview and would not say why even after a court order the money was not paid. But he did promise to pay if Morton came by now, which we told her to do while we watched. A few minutes later, she came out with Check in hand. The moment I walked in, she said, Are you Mrs. Morton? I says, Yes. And she had an envelope. That was it. Like to add that arrangements have already been made for a replacement. She's contacted someone else and the work has already begun. Well, that's good. I'm wondering why the court couldn't have helped her get her money back. Initially, though, she had a judgment. Well, when it comes to any court order, the court can help you, but you have to go back to court again. Also tonight, how much of your life is filled with stress and how much do you understand about how that stress affects your heart? A new study at the University of Maryland Hospital is hoping to find some answers. Break down and take it easy. You haven't to. The patient is going through arithmetic tests. He knows that the heart's beating much faster. Most people have a very marked increase in blood pressure and a less marked increase in heart rate with mental stress activities. I felt it was less stressful. The study also stresses people with heart disease, and here the mental stress could be dangerous to the heart. Milton Fife has a history of heart disease. He admits suffering some chest pain when he exerts himself playing handball. As soon as I stop for just a fraction of a minute and not even a fraction of in a few seconds, I don't have that pain anymore. But what the study is showing, Milton doesn't have to feel pain at all, and he could be suffering ischemia. That means a lack of blood or oxygen to the walls of the heart. What we're finding out in this study is that in the short term that when you apply mental stress or emotional stress in the laboratory, that individuals can develop ischemia, which is painless. Right now, it's totally unpredictable as to which types of stress can produce ischemia. So everyday stresses could affect your heart. But then again, there are other stresses we don't even know or feel that could also be affecting our hearts even more, especially if you have heart disease. And this is the hard part is not knowing which stress is doing what. Well, what are doctors doing for people like the men we've seen today? People who want to be active? Exactly. Milton can stay active, but in physical stress, they can measure, you know, how they put you on a treadmill and they say, okay, when your heart gets to be this fast, don't get it to be that fast.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77496/file/164426#t=3995.58,4109.14"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77496/file/164426/transcript/39239/annotation/38","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Because that's when you start the ischemia, it's the mental stress. Disturbing news tonight about elderly abuse. A House committee says an estimated 1.5 million senior citizens are abused each year, often by their own children. The committee also revealed that the government has virtually ignored the problem. Officials say most cases of elder abuse go unreported because older people are ashamed to admit that their families abuse them. In 1988, 2500 cases were reported in Maryland, but officials believe over 5100 cases actually occurred. And tonight, also concern over the state's increasing infant and child mortality rates. A new study released by the Maryland Citizen Action Coalition says that Maryland trails 21 nations for its excessive high rate. The findings are alarming since the state reportedly spends more per capita on health care than any nation in the world. The coalition director says the government needs to establish a national health plan. Baltimore is getting good and getting even better. That's what Mayor Schmoke told a crowd of about 400 people yesterday in his first State of the City address. In his commentary tonight, Michael Oscar examines the message behind the mayor's words. A lot of people at the war memorial, and he sounded kind of like an echo of an earlier mayor we had around here. Mayor smoke sounded like a latter day. William Donald Schaefer, the former mayor, used to shout Baltimore is best. Even as he faced an endless alley of problems, this mayor said the city's doing great. Even as we face brand new problems. We're more than a decade into the so-called renaissance of Baltimore, and we've read all the press clippings saying how terrific we are. Schaefer never had to face expectations like this. Secondly, Schaefer had a federal government that didn't routinely turn its back on crumbling cities. That's changed. Peace may be breaking out all over the world, but Washington is still building missile systems instead of rebuilding cities. That's why communities like ours are feeling such an economic crunch right now. It's good that the mayor is learning to talk positive, but it's realistic to remember the problems that optimistic words can't wash away. I'm Michael, Alaska. Thank you, Michael. As Andrea Koppel reports, students at the largest school in the state also get the chance to learn about their favorite kind of music. The traditional high school music class that most of us know is one filled with tubas, trumpets and drums. But here at Old Mill, High School, music class is somewhat unconventional. Your first clue? Music class here includes electric guitars and microphones. There's a lot of the kids out there are picking up a guitar, playing a piano, playing drums with rock music and not learning anything about music itself. All music has structure and basic form, and the concepts we teach in classical music are the same as the concepts we teach in rock music. So the kids can play rock music and learn about music. And that's exactly what Landers has been teaching here at Old Mill for the past 15 years. In a class he created called Folk Rock. Today's music class assembled in the school's auditorium as part of a spring sports pep rally. And while members of various teams demonstrated their individual talents, the 16 students in Tim Lander's folk rock class played backup. When you're up on stage and you're performing and you have people in the audience that are yelling, it just it's a really good feeling. At the halfway point, inventory was being taken of what hurt most everything across my body that I didn't know existed in my legs. Really? My joints. It looks like an improving picture, at least for part of tomorrow. But by later in the day tomorrow, a frontal system out to our west with a little bit of upper level disturbance. As you can see, some showers developing over Missouri that'll be moving in our direction. And we could see some showers here or at least a chance of a thunderstorm here by late in the day tomorrow. This is that little area of low pressure that's developing around and around and around. But you see the breaks that occurred to our west. So that's what's getting our area right now. Partly cloudy skies dangerously, some big thunderstorms. Look at these storms developing over portions of North Carolina. They continue to move out to the east and will eventually die out over the Atlantic Ocean. But for us, a lot of sun tomorrow and we'll see some clouds and then this frontal system approaches from the west. I do expect to see perhaps some showers and maybe a fun a shower developing these big storms developing down our south, as you can see. But clear skies over portions of Ohio or western Pennsylvania. And those breaks will be with us from time to time throughout the day tomorrow. So we do expect a nicer day tomorrow. Then we saw today we'll take a look at tomorrow's forecast. It looks like clouds and maybe some sun. Late Saturday, 65 down to 49. The nights getting a little cooler than they will be tonight's hour, John and Anthony. All right, Bob, thank you. Thank you. Well, are they still playing at this close bombing? Unless something's happened in the last few minutes. They're still efforting another win. Have the highlights. The 33rd loss to sports when we come back. It's just. Rebates. First, they increase prices. Then they offer rebates. What kind of a bargain is that? Toyota offers 23 models still at last year's prices, including our best selling Camry. Camry is higher. Ten years later, the country's constitution was amended to proclaim equal rights for both sexes. Even now, in Athens, IL, the men are not paying attention. Here's ABC's Jon Lawrence. Often, Zelle has an abundance of riches mountain views, clean air, scenic villages and a famous cheese. But often Zell does not have are equal rights for men and women. Women cannot vote in local elections through a church in North Korea. Women have enough rights. They don't need any more rights. They should be happy with what they've got. They're lucky if they have a good husband to look after them. Once a year, as they have done for 600 years. The men have often Zelle marched to the main square for a town meeting. They carry swords or daggers, symbolic of their will to fight for democratic freedoms for men. Thank you. Nice being here. I mean, you've been to London, right? Right. What did you think of it on this night city? Did you see the queen? I saw the queen. Well, she was coming out. She didn't know who I was. I went to her, but she didn't wave back. Oh, well, they say that the British are very famous for saving their money, and evidently no one is more serious about it than the most wealthy woman in the world, Queen Elizabeth. Very well. That's probably one of the wealthiest houses in the world. And if you look at the flag behind me, the queen's in. Queen Elizabeth is the wealthiest woman in the world with a fortune of more than eight and a half billion dollars. In 1988 alone, her wealth grew by a staggering $1 billion. At the same time, the royal family don't think of themselves as rich. You never actually see the always complaining the hard up Prince Charles and never any money with him, and that he will often send things back to jewelers for the diamond because he thinks they're too expensive. Now he's a guy who's got three and a half million dollars a year income coming in. Yet he thinks his is poor. He's been called the royal family's favorite reporter. But now, after writing his latest book, Theirs Is The Kingdom, Andrew Morton fears he may have fallen out of grace with Britain's first family by publishing their most royal financial secrets. The fact that her wealth has been shown to the full glare of publicity does not delight the Queen at all. In fact, she's just got my room, the Tower of London now.
