In fact, in Washington right now, it's 71 degrees, even in parts of the city, it's still around the upper 60s to low 70s. Right here, under cloudy skies, with the threat of some showers very, very, very soon on the horizon. 66 degrees now, 18 Celsius humidity, 78 % of the winds out of the southwest, around 20 with some, even some higher gusts at times. The barometer's falling now rapidly from 29 .77 inches. Air quality was good today, a reading of 9. Earlier this afternoon, Insta and I was out and shows us how cloudy it got from time to time. But in between the cloudy weather with a little bit of showers, we did have some sun. And that really brought those temperatures up. So this scene, about 24 hours, will be probably a lot different, because we're going to see quite a bit of wind blowing these leaves around during the next 24 -hour period. In fact, winds could gust to 40 miles an hour during the next day as the frontal system moves in. Let's take a look at the satellite tonight, and I'll show you what's going to be causing the change. Here in the east, we did have some sun, some clearing weather, as you can see, around the east coast, but to our west, heavy clouds, snow from about northwest Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, western part of much of Tennessee, even getting some snow. Missouri, Arkansas, even into Texas, some snow, and rain, heavy rain over east Texas through all of Mississippi and Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, up through Kentucky and out to West Virginia. And there's a flash flood watch in effect tonight for Frederick County westward in Maryland. There's a chance of some pretty heavy showers tonight. Let's take a look at Skyeye. This very incident, I'll show you where those showers are developing. Let's take a look at our central scan. You can look and you can see some of the activity. As you can see, here's the Baltimore area. Now, right out to our west, a good line of showers is developing. Let's take a look at our northwest scan, give you a better look at it. Okay. Here's Cumberland out to the west. Here's the West Virginia Panhandle. There's Baltimore right over here. Just out to our west now, a pretty good area of showers is developing, nothing real heavy in that right now, but it's moving and growing to the east northeast, so we'll see some showers here in the next hour over the Baltimore area, and they should develop and grow as the night progresses. So, later tonight, sky eyes should really show quite a bit of additional precipitation. We have a storm system over Kentucky, another one over parts of Mississippi. These two will combine into one pretty good storm tomorrow, just to our north over Pennsylvania. And because of that location, we'll be getting a pretty good, strong southerly flow until kind of just pushes through, and that will occur. There's the front. It'll occur sometime tomorrow afternoon, and temperatures will start to tumble. Chicago, 15 today. Minneapolis, three, two in Bismarck, 10 below this afternoon up in northern Montana. So this is a very cold Arctic air mass, and it'll be affecting our weather quite a bit during the next couple of days. Spock, who helped to raise a whole generation of kids back in the 50s, received a 60 -day jail term for his part in the nuclear power plant demonstration recently. But Dr. Spock plans to avoid jail by appealing the sentence all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. The guest list read like a who's who in American law. The friends of retired Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas met last night to pay tribute to the man whose 35 and a half year tenure on the high court is unequaled. From current Chief Justice Warren Berger to former Secretary of Defense Clark Clifford, Douglas was described as a man who enriched the nation and mankind. Many of us miss the old familiar sound of Guy Lombardo, especially on New Year's Eve. Lombardo died last year, but now we're told his nephew Bill plans to step in and the Royal Canadians and many of us into the new year. Bill Lombardo will conduct his uncle's band to the grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York, New Year's Eve. Just like old times, well, almost. This is a day for those of us here at Eyewitness News that many of us won't forget, probably for the rest of our lives, because it was exactly one year ago that our friend and colleague Wiley Daniels died. Wiley was 48 years old when he suffered an unexpected heart attack early in the morning last December 8th. At the time of his death, Wiley was co -anchoring Eyewitness News at noon and was an active street reporter for us. Wiley had been at Channel 13 since 1965 and in Baltimore nine years longer than that. Most of you knew Wiley from his work on Eyewitness News and that he was instrumental in bringing peace back to the streets of Harlem Park during the 1968 riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But many of you might not have been aware of the many community activities Wiley always involved himself with. Not only was he an active member of professional journalism organizations, he also made time to be on the boards of directors of various civic and charitable groups and was particularly active in the J .C.'s. Wiley also gave of his time to help Coppin State and Morgan State raise money for scholarship funds for needy students. He was active in fundraising activities for the United Negro College Fund. And I guess that all of us here at Eyewitness News remember Wiley a year after his death. And I guess what we remember most is that he always made time. to help others. You'll recall that last night on eyewitness news we told you about 19 or 15 year old Carmela Winfield, a musically gifted handicapped child at the McMechen School. Carmela's big Christmas wish is for a piano and your generosity has made that wish come true. The response to our story was terrific and already 10 people have offered to donate pianos to Carmela. Next week Carmela will be getting her piano and eyewitness news will be there to Share that moment with all of you.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914#t=1758.71,1929.0
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914/transcript/77113/annotation/68
Speaker 2: The Stout and Cotton Claws Wagner will tell us what the Colts have to say about their future needs on the field.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914#t=1930.26,1935.72
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914/transcript/77113/annotation/69
Speaker 5: All sorts of handmade crafts go on display at 5th Regiment Armory. I don't think the Colts have a chance against the Steelers. They're just too strong all the way around. They've only lost a couple of games all season. There's not really much else to be said except that I hope that Kirkland does get a shot of playing tomorrow and also the following weekend's Buffalo. Here's the way the rest of the weekend schedule stacks up in the NFL. Two games tomorrow. Of We've mentioned the Baltimore Pittsburgh the vikings at detroit uh... still going for the nfc central championship with the packers i'm going with minnesota buffaloes at new england this one is pretty obvious the patriot should win that one dallas at uh... philadelphia now dallas has already clinched the nfc east they might take it easy in that event philadelphia is a kind of a club that can surprise them but i'm still going with dallas washington atlanta total chaos with the redskins atlanta coming off of that thirty point loss to the bingles but they've just been too consistent. the last seven weeks uh... to lose this game i think the jets over cleveland matt robinson seems to be doing a lot better job than richard todd i'll go with new york st louis of the giants i'm picking the upset here in new york mcveigh may be on his way out but to the giants to save a little bit of face uh... could win this one should win this one i think green bay chicago fighting it out with the vikings for the nfc east i'll go with the packers houston at new orleans go with the oilers even though pastorini and campbell have minor injuries, I think they're still too strong. to lose to the saints. Oakland's at Miami, the Dolphins at home, they have the edge in that one. This is a tight game, but Oakland I think has lost too many people since last year. Schuyler's Club still in the running for a spot to win this one. Kansas City at Denver, the Broncos at home, a win. They can clinch the AFC West for the second straight year. It's a big rivalry with the Chiefs, but Denver's just too strong this year. Seattle at San Diego, both have strong offenses, should be a very good game. but i think the chargers have the edge on defense and if you saw last monday night's game when they annihilated the bears why i think you have to agree that san diego should beat seattle tampa bay at san francisco i'm going with the upset here the forty niners and monday night cincinnati at los angeles the rams have already clinched the nfc west they could be upset but i doubt that they will be upset by the cincinnati bangles a few more deals were made today at the winter meetings one of the best third baseman in the league buddy bella the indians was traded by cleveland to the rangers Thanks for watching! for toby harrah the rangers seem to have the edge on that one since both the third baseman i think bells a little bit lesser better plus he's younger the rangers also sent shortstop jim mason to the expos for outfielder mike hart the Mets traded uh... pitcher jerry kuzman to the twins for minor league pitcher greg field and unnamed player kuzman was great the late sixties and early seventies the last couple years haven't been very good he finished eight and twenty and seventy seven and three and fifteen this past year. The Astros' pedal pitcher Floyd banistered the Mariners for Craig Reynolds, he's one of the American League's better short stops, and as for the Orioles, still a zero if any interleague deals are to be made tonight midnight, of course is the deadline. That deal between the Giants and Twins involving Rod Carew is down the drain, Carew told Giants owner Bob Lurie after a three -hour meeting in Minneapolis today that there were too many complex issues to resolve before he could agree to the deal. They were serious enough not to be resolved by tonight's midnight interleague trade deadline. The $3 .5 million five -year deal was not. one of those problems. Other top guns will be Steve Richmond of Massachusetts, Wink Bartley of Marla Heights Maryland and Jeff Ferrand of Salisbury. The Pro -Am starts in about 30 minutes with the head to head competition Winding up on Sunday Two more local high schools kicked off their 78 -79 season today. That was after they were down by four at the half. Merville here in the white uniforms caused Southern mistakes in the first half. However, they weren't cashing in as often as they should have. The Southern used their height advantage to control the rebounding. 31 and red, Perry Nelson led Southern with 24. Number 20 Guy Goodwin led Murvo. with 14. Last August, two federal judges ruled that overcrowding conditions in the state penitentiary and the House of Correction represented cruel and unusual punishment. They ordered the state to remove 1 ,000 inmates by April 1st. While prison officials have tried to reduce the inmate population and the overcrowding, they admit that without a new facility it's almost impossible to unpack the prisons. Meeting the court's deadline is out of the question. In the meanwhile, the state awaits a decision on its appeal of the order to reduce the inmate population. But while the lawyers argue the conditions in the prisons remain bad, the penitentiary designed to hold 743 inmates now has 959. At the House of Correction in Jessup, the situation is worse. There, 1 ,666 inmates are jammed into a facility rated at a capacity of 912. Thanks for watching! We're all familiar with the local resistance to recent plans for building a new state prison, and the politicians have done little to help the situation. We think that Governor -Elect Hughes and the new General Assembly, when they begin their work next month, the problems of the Corrections Department should receive high priority, not only for reasons of humanity, but also for public safety. The present conditions only help assure that many of those behind bars will return to the streets more embittered and threatened than before.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914#t=2470.62,2555.29
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914/transcript/77113/annotation/95
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914#t=2556.42,2558.94
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144420/file/266914/transcript/77113/annotation/96
Speaker 2: It is not uncommon for school children to steal lunch money from classmates, but it got out of hand in Paulsboro, New Jersey, where an eighth -grader was shaken down for a total of $1 ,630 in daily protection payments.
