It is Friday, the 28th day of August, 1998. And there it is. Pretty boy. Damn, there is, pretty boy. Damn. And there is construction on the road. We'll take a look at the entire area and go about ten minutes or so with the blade in the segment we call. Hey, look at that. Look at that. And there's lots more still to look at on this morning. In addition to the only place to get all your local news, weather and traffic from seven eight, there's marketplace. We will be live in Ocean City as Hurricane Bonnie passes by. Plus, some news you haven't heard yet this morning. It better be a special brew. This one is coming with a priestly blessing. All right. People are talking live. Heads up, dad at the Newtown Cafe and Owings Mills. Okay. And we'll go Skyward Chopper 13 again. We just can't blow it off. Well, we just did it second $100 a minute. They didn't take it there. I am pretty boy. Ocean City, City live this morning. A hurricane is soon to pass by and people are still walking to the beach in shorts. It's actually moving out to sea. Some of its rain bands are going to be moving in. But, you know, all things considered, looks pretty darn good. Another shot of Pretty Boy. It's actually very pretty. Morning. Looks like the sun's trying to break out there on the western shore. It sure honestly does. We'll take a look at the forecast for the day. We're actually going to say some sun makes an appearance later this afternoon. Stormy the coast through the day. But here we could see what we're seeing brightening by noon. But it certainly could happen earlier. Certainly, it looks like it's trying to have a bear blade is right now partly cloudy and light, still windy. The coast mile an overnight low of 68. And then tomorrow, clouds and sun hot, humid chance for an afternoon thunderstorm back to summer like conditions tomorrow and Sunday with a high of 90 and overnight low of 70. Hurricane Bonnie is whipping up winds this morning in Ocean City, but it appears the Maryland coastline will be spared the worst of that storm. Alex Dimitri is standing by live in Ocean City right on the beach waiting for Bonnie to brush by Alex. Yeah, I'm waiting on about 200,000 tourists are probably also waiting down there. Pretty disappointed this morning because they went to bed last night thinking this storm would pass by off the coast overnight. That obviously did not happen. It is still to our south. We have experienced a steady pick up of winds there. And if you look out to sea, you can see the storm surge has actually kicked up quite a bit in the last couple of hours. Now we're actually seeing some beach erosion here. The the best the Ocean City management team can forecast at this hour is that the storm, the tropical storm will still come to Ocean City, but they're not going to give it time anymore.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136481/file/253062#t=188.44,275.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136481/file/253062/transcript/71202/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They've been burned too many times by the storm and its lack of punctuality. So what they're saying now is that sometime today, the remnants or Hurricane Bonnie's force will come ashore in tropical force winds. That'll be winds of up to 50mph. We should have increasingly heavy rains and thunderstorms and then it should last for a period of 6 to 10 hours. So not at all a good day on the beach, perhaps. And they're also telling people if one of these winds do kick up to please stay inside, watch the storm from behind glass. It's the safest way to do it. So you mentioned the 200,000 tourists. Is it your impression that most people have not gone home early? Well, 200,000 is probably a little heavy for this time of the week. But no, I have not seen a mass exodus of tourists here. Most people have been, you know, content to try to make the best of it. Yesterday was actually a pretty good day on the beach. Just a little rain in the morning. But other than that, it was just cloudy and warm and breezy. So, you know, people have paid for a week and I think most people are riding it out. I think, however, they are going to be disappointed that the storm did not pass by as expected last night. All right, Alex, thank you very much. We paid for another satellite window, so I think we'll be talking to you once more this morning. Not sure of what they'd find once they got there. The storm's driving winds did damage to some homes and businesses. It downed trees and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers. But Bonnie wasn't nearly as bad as Hurricane Fran two years ago when they told her it was going to be so catastrophic. You know, as compared to what Fran was, you know, I think we suffered more damage. We unwise than what we did with this one. Weather watchers are still keeping an eye on the next potential threat. Hurricane Danielle still looming over the Atlantic. Jonathan Freed, CBS News, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. But the latest word on Hurricane Danielle is good. All right. It certainly is going to be an interesting day down the shore. Yeah. Look, all things considered were getting off pretty darn easy. The Army Corps of Engineers shut down the road about a year ago. There's a project going on that is being done by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works. Denise Thompson and her family were some of the few who rode out the storm at home. They had already survived, Fran. I think that's what was so scary about Fran, too, is all night long we heard these trees snapping away and it made them fearless. It really didn't worry me because I've been to hurricanes pretty much almost at the same time. Compared to Fran, Bonnie seemed almost easy. But it had one dangerous effect. He described his ordeal from his hospital bed. Just through my leg and I could feel the teeth sinking. It was almost like sticking a kitchen knife in to an apple where you could. It just floods right in after the initial pop pop of the skin. So I was just doing whatever I could to get it off of me. John says he just jammed his hand to the shark's gills and yanked the shark, then swam off, but not before some damage had been done. Jonathan's leg was operated on yesterday. Wow. And if a shark is attacking me, I don't think I'm touching the shark. Except I guess the bump on the nose. Wow. Well, I guess if you grab somebody's lungs and pull, that would let go. Well, I tell you, you got to look at it. Yeah, but you got to get past your near all those teeth. What? You're doing it. Well, all right. How many times do you get up and go out for a workout? Well, for instance, maybe this week or next week. This morning, Kelly Lin has some ideas to help make your exercise a habit. Good morning. If you're trying to establish a regular workout routine, think frequency, not duration. Fitness experts say it's better to work out for 20 to 30 minutes every day than for an hour a day, three times a week. That way you're putting yourself into a daily routine. It's important to approach exercise like you would bathing or brushing your teeth, doing it every day without compromise. Once you're in the habit of exercising regularly, you can slowly work up to 30 minutes or more a day.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136481/file/253062#t=2708.12,2800.92"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136481/file/253062/transcript/71202/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Then give yourself a break 1 or 2 days a week. But yeah, I feel bad for the ones I got nailed bad. But it's pretty cool. As long as we stay a safe distance, have. You're looking at a live shot now at the beach here about 28th Street in Ocean City. As you can see, the storm surge has really moved the water pretty far up onto the beach. Yesterday, there would be, I would say, a good 50 yards from where that that wash water is out to where the breakers were. It's also causing some beach erosion. It's carving away the bottom half of the foot of the beach here. They expect to see some significant beach erosion out of all of this storm, which is projected to last through most of the afternoon, perhaps beginning to tail off toward the evening Don. Okay.
