Another day of mounting tensions in the Persian Gulf, Saddam Hussein continues. His dangerous war of words, a war of words and a war of nerves, with embassy personnel surrounded by Iraqi troops in Kuwait City. And there were also words of warning for President Bush. We have not taken away any part of the United States. Tough talk today from Iraq's president, Saddam Hussein in a meeting with reporters accompanying Austrian President Kurt Waldheim to Baghdad. He called for President Bush to seek a diplomatic solution to the Gulf crisis. With this ominous warning, I shall say that whoever that that collides with Iraq will find in front of him columns of dead bodies, which may have a beginning but may not have an end. The Austrian president left Iraq after a short visit, taking with him 80 Austrians stranded there since Iraq invaded Kuwait August 2nd. But the fate of the thousands of other Westerners trapped in both Kuwait and Iraq is still unknown. Please raise their hand. A bright spot in an otherwise gloomy day came early this morning. The United Nations Security Council voted 13 to 0 to give the world's navies the right to use force to stop vessels trading with Iraq, a vote considered a major victory for U.S. policy. Today, the U.N. secretary general invited the Iraqi ambassador to meet in New York or Geneva, for urgent talks aimed at resolving the crisis in the Gulf. And today, more Maryland reservists learned they will have to report for duty because of the crisis in the Middle East. Two Army Reserve units specializing in transportation are among ten units activated today by the Army headquartered at Fort Meade. They're from the 176th and 220th units in Baltimore. Their orders report. By Monday, the soldiers will be heading to mobilization sites at Fort Meade and in North Carolina. The reservists are combat ready, although they don't know yet if they will be sent to the Middle East. And the 756 Air Force Reserve squadron reported for duty at Andrews Air Force Base this morning as ordered. They're part of the Air Force's military Airlift Command, headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Their mission airlift people and materials between the states and the Persian Gulf. They got their orders this week to report early this morning. It's all taking everybody pretty much by storm. And everybody is pretty, you know, excited about it. In Townsend, rescue crews have recovered the bodies of two teens who drowned last night. 16 year old Robert Gerben and 18 year old Timothy Hicks disappeared while swimming in the Loch Raven Reservoir. Divers pulled their bodies from the water this morning. City officials say swimming in the reservoir is prohibited. The area where the two boys apparently drowned is about 35ft deep. Well, tonight, aviation officials continue their investigation into yesterday's plane crash near Boston. A crash that killed the president of Columbia's Rouse Company. 49 year old Michael Spear, his wife Judy, and their daughter Jody, all died when their private plane went down in a residential neighborhood early yesterday morning. Officials say they still do not know what caused this crash. Today, Baltimore City Public Works crews are trying to fix the water main break in the health law barrier. The break occurred early this morning between Hammons Ferry and Washington Boulevard. Right now, thousands of people living in south Baltimore and Arundel and Baltimore counties are experiencing low water pressure and are being asked to refrain from watering lawns and washing cars. City officials say it could take days to repair this break. U.S. Air is getting ready to hand out another round of pink slips and that could mean major layoffs at BWI Airport. The airline plans to lay off 2100 more people nationwide over the next four months. Officials say they expect the cuts to affect BWI since U.S. Air has 3000 workers there or about 5.5% of its total workforce. Earlier this week, about 1500 U.S. employees were laid off. U.S. officials are blaming a decrease in passenger demand and poor economic conditions for the cutbacks. New census figures indicate a sizable decrease in Baltimore's population, according to preliminary census figures. Baltimore has lost about 8.5% of its population in the past ten years. The numbers released Friday show the city is now second to Montgomery County as the state's largest jurisdiction. But that's pretty much the case around the area. Temperatures in the mid 80s right now, very muggy night going for us as we speak. Winds in the bay tomorrow will be variable at 6 to 12 knots. As we look at our local radar, we can see where the shower activity is occurring right now pretty much from, say, oh, the White Marsh area right up along 95 through Harford County and into southeastern Pennsylvania. A pretty good thunderstorm had dropped hail near Chester, Pennsylvania. Tonight, 23 year old LaTonya Jordan, mother of seven of the children and 24 year old Gabriel Rich, mother of the other three, are in the women's detention center. Each charged with ten counts of child abuse. The children are in the care of the Department of Social Services and are being well fed, which please them just fine. The uncle who called police said he could not stand by any longer and let the children be mistreated. The mothers remain in jail awaiting bail hearings. Two members of a Louisiana television crew are lucky to be alive tonight after their helicopter nosedived to the ground. They're going to try again next week to launch the space shuttle Columbia. Engineers have replaced the shuttle's leak plague hydrogen fuel lines and hope to put seven astronauts into space to study high energy radiation. Launch date is set for early Saturday morning, weather permitting. Well, bad weather certainly took its toll on the fourth annual balloon race out of the state fair. Ataman M tonight. Contestants came prepared, ready to launch their hot air balloons, only to find out that the race had been postponed. Officials blame high winds and the possibility of thunderstorms for the cancellation. But even that didn't stop some of the younger contestants.
