We're here live at New Shiloh Baptist Church where prayers are offered for victims in Atlanta. I'll have that story coming up in just a few minutes. Also, another police involved shooting in the city. This time the officer gets hit. And if you run a red light in Baltimore City, you better get ready to wave for some new cameras. Eyewitness News, we'll show you where they are coming up. And the heartwarming story of two families who used to be strangers but are now bound forever by organ donation. And it's almost like a heat wave out there. Seriously? No. We starting off today. Just about. Let's see. The bug says 28. We're getting up to about 42. And I tell you, we have exactly some melting. I needed it. My driveway is like a layer of ice thick. Yeah, So we're dealing with that today. You can use today to get out and do just about anything you need to do that you haven't been able to do because the snow has been on the ground and messing up the car wash tours. Car wash. That's mostly lake effect, just some snow blowing in off the lakes. That's what lake effect snow would be. They have it. They would be talking about a nice day starting out 32, as we said, is our forecast as far as this morning. It's average temperature downtown. We're talking about 30 to 42 is our forecast high down to about 26 this evening. Of course, we will have a first warning forecast, a fall first warning forecast, pretty easy for me to say. Coming up in just about 7 minutes. All right. Let's take a look at what people are talking about this morning. First, some members of the Baltimore community are coming together to pray for a local sports star charged with murder. It's the latest development in the Ray Lewis murder charges right here in Baltimore. Eyewitness News is live at the New Shiloh Baptist Church on North Monroe Street for a special prayer vigil in front of Charles there. Good morning, Brenda. Good morning, Carol. Good morning, everyone. We're here on the street. As you said, we're members of New Shiloh Baptist Church are filing in for a morning prayer service both for Ray Lewis and his family, as well as the murder victims in Atlanta. The police affidavit points to Ray Lewis as the man who killed Richard Lawler and Joseph Baker. The document states that Ray Lewis, along with others, did unlawfully and with malice, caused the death of just Cynthia Baker and Richard Lawler by punching, beating and stabbing them with a sharp object. The document goes on to say, this is according to a witness who saw the entire incident. The witness knows Mr. Lewis by name and sight and has known him for over a year. I think what is significant is the way the affidavit starts out along with others. So it is not clear yet who these others are and who did what. Who had what role. Police allege that Lewis and five others fought and stabbed the two men outside an Atlanta nightclub. It happened early Monday morning after the Super Bowl. Police say in a hail of gunfire, the men fled the scene in this limousine that Lewis rented in Glen Burnie. Eyewitness News has learned that a man named Kwame King, a childhood friend of Lewis, was with him that night. Our Katie Larson spoke with King sister tonight about the incident. Do you believe that he would be capable of doing something like that? You grew up with him? Absolutely not. Why not? Because I've never seen him get mad or raise his fist to anyone. We're praying for Barry and we're behind, and we don't think that he did and that he had anything to do with it. Another friend of Lewis's, A.J. Johnson, who lives in Laurel, is reportedly also wanted for questioning. Meantime, Lewis, his family has been visiting him in jail. We just talk about the law the whole time we're there and we laugh about the good times and old times.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256#t=186.05,284.94"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256/transcript/41924/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And we sit down and laugh about this one day. Kyle Jackson, WG Eyewitness News. Now, Katie, we've seen about a dozen people walk in here and Eyewitness News will be covering the service with coverage on the news at 6:00. Back to you. All right. Thank you very much, Brenda Karl reporting live. And while the service continues there, new details continue to emerge on the Ray Lewis case. And we'll bring you the very latest just as soon as we get it Tim. Well, Eyewitness News also has exclusive information about the limousine driver at the scene of the murders. Eyewitness News investigates what the driver actually saw and what he says he saw. The government has the exclusive story. Looks like Duane Fassett, the driver of his limousine, would be Ray Lewis's best witness. After all, he was an eyewitness, according to his boss. From what I understand, from talking to my driver and everything. From what he's from what he's told me so far, that Ray Lewis didn't have anything to do with this. Lewis's attorney would certainly be counting on a statement like that to win his client's freedom. But he did not participate in any way in any criminal activity. He did not have a knife. He did not use a knife. He did not engage in a fight. He did not promote in any way a fight. But there is now conflicting information about what the driver actually told the police. Eyewitness News has exclusively learned that the statement contains more bad news for Lewis than good. Sources say the driver confirmed that Lewis did participate in an assault, that he repeatedly hit one of the homicide victims. And that based upon what he saw, he would be a reluctant witness against Ray Lewis.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256#t=285.27,387.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256/transcript/41924/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Reluctant because the driver is known to be a close friend of Ray Lewis, both personally and professionally. Now, even though the driver has now returned to Maryland, homicide detectives from Atlanta have continued to stay in touch with him with his news coverage of the Lewis case continues later in this newscast, we'll show you how situations like Lewis's can put celebrity corporate endorsements in jeopardy. Okay. So here's a recap of the new developments in the Ray Lewis case so far. The actual charging documents state Lewis, along with others, punched, beat and stabbed the victims, while Lewis his lawyers deny those charges. Eyewitness News learns the limousine driver may be a damaging witness to Lewis. Atlanta police bring their investigation to Maryland. Doctors say Officer Weaver is in good spirits and should be released from the hospital soon. If you drive in Baltimore City, you'll want to pay attention to this next story. By next week, there will be more cameras to snap your picture. If you run a red light. Now, here's where they're going. Monument and Pulaski Streets, North Avenue and Howard Street. But Tapscott Avenue and Fourth Street. Helen Road and Argonne Drive. Martin Luther King Jr. And Washington Boulevards. And Franklin Street. And Franklin Town Road. So if they catch you running a red light, you can expect a $75 ticket in the mail. A lot of people are going to be getting those tickets. Yes. Seeing a lot of red. Yes. Red light runners, that's for sure. Well, I know that a lot of people have not enjoyed the cold weather, but the recent cold snap has meant some big, big bucks for a group of people trained for icy conditions. They're called the ice breakers and they make things safe for those who make a living on the water. Mike Schuh has more. I fish this out of the bay today. It is eight inches of solid ice. How are they getting through this? Well, with the salt trucks and snow plows of the water. Stand by your lines. They can line three. This crew from Philadelphia has been in the bay for a week. They will stay here breaking ice until the weather breaks. For the first 16 years of my Coast Guard career, I was trained to avoid hitting things. And here I am being told to hit things as hard as I'd like. Right now, we're just north of Annapolis. This is the main shipping channel. Those ships couldn't get through because this ice is about eight inches thick. Just why is this work important without the six cutters in the bay? Tangiers and Smith Island would be cut off. Plus, more than 95% of our imports destined for this country come in by waterways. The Chesapeake Bay and the Port of Baltimore is the closest port to the Midwest. For instance, this car carrier in from Europe is using the channel just cut by the fleet. It's cold, bumpy work. But each day this crew of six has an undeniable sense of accomplishment. Mike Shu, WJC, Eyewitness News. So want to hear my story? Sure. Car gets stuck. 530 in the morning because of ice, just like what Mike had. You did that two years ago? Yes, I did. Still in that same driveway? It was while the bushes were still there. And the only reason I was able to shop it, I couldn't do it in the morning but was able to do it that night because, you know, it started to melt down. Yesterday we got up to about 38 degrees. And of course, those temperatures are going to be with us today. 42 is our forecast high and a lot of the stuff will just thaw. Not a bad day. I say not a bad day for car washes for more reason than one. Of course, a lot of the snow is gone, but a lot of the stuff, the junk, the slush on the streets has started to evaporate. Evaporate. So basically, you don't have that mist, that stuff blowing back on you from cars in front. So that's a good thing. 42 degrees is our temperature that we're getting up to. We're starting out right around freezing, though. Freezing this time of morning actually feels like spring considering what we have had. These things, these echoes you see coming in from the satellite map, a lot of snow in the area that's not even hitting the ground. It's just some high clouds, snow evaporating. And we certainly in the mid-Atlantic region aren't seeing too much of anything. There are some showers to our south. And because the temperatures are so cold this morning, of course, you saw only 29 or so, 30 degrees in Ocean City. It could come down in the form of some flurries, but that is nothing to worry about today. Mostly sunny for most of us. And any flurries you see just moving on through. We have new information to report this morning about the crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261. You may remember the plane plunged into the ocean off the California coast earlier this week. Well, the cockpit voice recorders that were aboard the Alaska Airlines jet are now revealing more details about the final minutes before the plane crashed. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board say two loud noises can be heard on the black box recording just before the crash. A flight attendant advised the crew that she had heard a loud noise in the rear of the aircraft. The crew acknowledged that they had heard it, too. Then just a little bit later, you can hear a second loud noise just before the MD 83 goes out of control. All 88 passengers and crew members died in the crash. A memorial service for the victims is being held this afternoon at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, state corrections officials say no more HBO for prison inmates. Premium cable channels like Showtime and HBO are being replaced with the Recovery Network. That's a new statewide cable network. Well, that airs programs that it calls educational and wholesome. And this morning, we start with a long time favorite Cajun catfish. And Chef Bennie Gordon from the Farm Caterers is here this morning to show us how it's prepared. And first of all, Chef Bennie, thank you so much for being here. I mean, you have been moving and this is it smells great. It looks good. Tell us how people here soul food, obviously, you know, a lot of people have a concept of what it is, but what makes soul food, especially to a chef? What makes soul food? Soul food. Soul food is really food that you have. It comes from like the heart. You know what I mean? It's a lot of the root of the of the cooking. And the root of it is actually when you are getting into when you're in the south, you know, some of the things that they improvise with. I mean, everything you can eat on a pig is up to like. Right. You know what I mean? That type of thing. So that's what it is. And it's really a gut feeling and it's all kind of spinoffs.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256#t=1410.0,1507.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256/transcript/41924/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So what I'm doing here, Cajun Catfish happens to be a dish that I'm doing that I'm spinning it off with a little bit of Maryland birds and compared to when you actually in the Creole, so. Okay, Got you. Well, I'll let you do your thing. You know, you have a lot going on here. Yeah. First thing we're going to do is I'm sort of showing you the finished product first. This is what we're going to end up with. Okay. Okay. Now I'm showing people here the catfish. The catfish is actually you can get a a fillet. Okay. And the fillet is something you can buy in the store. Already done already for you. So people say, you know, we get catfish filet, right? You get catfish fillet. It's really easy to do. I want to mention we have this recipe for you, too, will give you the address in just a few seconds. Right. First thing we're going to do is going to put butter in a pan. Okay? Okay. And you can put butter in this hot pan. Let's see. Okay. I want you to see it dance around. Okay. Now, one thing you certainly in especially in soul food, you are not lacking calories. So you want to just throw calories to the wind, right? It's not going to happen like that. But you're looking at your calories and everything that's going on. Okay. So what we have here tell you is spices. You have Caribbean spice, you have corn starch, parsley. You have a little bit of beef base, which can be a brief boiling cube. You can have a question about pepper and sugar. Okay. So what I'm doing here is I'm going to season the catfish. Okay? Once you season the catfish season on both sides.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256#t=1508.07,1591.47"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256/transcript/41924/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Got you. Okay. And after you season on both sides, you put it in a pan and see out of water. Brown. Right. You want that? You want the water to be above it. Right. Okay. And if you notice, after I do that, I turn it over and a sort of brown a little bit. You see the nice seasons, right? Okay. All right. So we're going to put that there for the next pan and we're going with the sauce. And the sauce is actually a mixture of parsley, a little bit of crushed red pepper. The sugar can you would add to this maybe some water, a little bit of water and like a cup of water, depending on the percentages you're going. Okay. I may add a little bit more butter and I might add a little kick to it. I'm going put some bourbon. Bourbon. Right. There you have it. Okay. All in style. Right. Hey, you see the flaming head? That's a fire, right? You always pull it off. Always pull it off the fire. And after you do that, you add a little bit of cornstarch, some mixture with cold water, and you come up with this. So that's actually what this is. Okay. Okay. So moving along here, if you have a head, you can go to the store and get a corn muffin mix. Any kind of corn muffin mix and make yourself some stuffing. Okay. And you can use the regular stuffing recipe that you have. I mean, but really pretty much at ease. This happens to be Jeffrey got to use this incorporated. And what you want to do is take the sauce. Once the sauce gets a little thick, put it on top of your catfish. Okay. And I had here, you actually would add the shrimp to the catfish as it's cooking consciously here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256#t=1593.25,1688.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256/transcript/41924/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And these have been pulled into Bain and that's also here. The story of Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis being charged with murder continues to be a topic of conversation this weekend. Eyewitness News is live in West Baltimore this morning to bring you the very latest on the Lewis story. Brenda Carroll joins us now live from outside New Shiloh Baptist Church where a prayer service was held just a short time ago for Lewis and the two victims Brenda. Good morning, Katie. That's right. A prayer vigil held here at New Shiloh Baptist Church this morning for Ray Lewis, his family, as well as the victims in Atlanta. We've seen maybe a dozen, perhaps 20 people have filed into the church this morning. And Eyewitness News Dennis Edwards is also inside. He'll be covering this prayer vigil. And Katie, we'll have complete coverage on this story coming up later tonight on Eyewitness News. Now sending it back to you in the studio. All right. Thank you very much, Brenda Karl, reporting live from West Baltimore. Also this morning, Eyewitness News obtains exclusive information that casts doubt on what a key witness says he saw. The charging documents released by Atlanta police specifically state that, according to one eyewitness, Ray Lewis, did help cause the death of the two victims.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256#t=1902.53,1996.04"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86959/file/175256/transcript/41924/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He was the peacemaker who was probably saying things like, Let's get out of here. Something's going on. But that's not what detectives in Atlanta are saying tonight. The police department's arrest warrant charges Ray Lewis with murder. The affidavit says he, quote, along with others, did unlawfully and with malice, caused the death of Jacintha Baker and Richard Lawler by participating in an assault, by punching, beating and stabbing them with a sharp object. The police say this is according to a witness who says he saw the entire incident. A witness who knows Mr. Lewis by name and sight and has known him for over a year. I think what is significant is the way the affidavit starts out along with others. So it is not clear yet who these others are and who did what. Who had what role. The incident occurred early Monday morning outside of an Atlanta nightclub after the Super Bowl game. Police say at least six men fought with and then fatally stabbed Baker and Lawler. Reports say the six then fled amidst gunfire in a limousine originally rented by Ray Lewis in Glen Burnie. Eyewitness News has learned Kwame King, a childhood friend who was with Lewis that night, has voluntarily returned to Atlanta for police questioning. Lewis grew up with King in Lakeland, Florida. Eyewitness News spoke with King's sister by phone. Do you believe that he would be capable of doing something like that? You grew up with him? Absolutely not. Why not? Because I've never seen them get mad or raise a fist to anyone. We're praying for Barry and we're behind, and we don't think that he did it and he had anything to do with it. Bay Ray is Lewis's childhood nickname short for Baby Ray. Ray Lewis, his family is in Atlanta and has been visiting the Atlanta jail where he is held without bond. We just talk about the law the whole time We get there and we laugh about the good times and old times and we all sit down and laugh about this one day. Atlanta police are now in Maryland, assisted by Baltimore County police. Meanwhile, during today's news conference, a Lewis attorney said she believed the Ravens star pro linebacker was only trying to break up a fight. Mr. Lewis was serving as a peacemaker. He obviously had some knowledge that something was awry with all the chaos that had ensued. What Mr. Garland reported and what our information shows is that he was shepherding his group of people into the limousine because there was obviously some confusion, chaos and altercation going on. And that statement that she made just there contradicts what Lewis's other lawyer said on Thursday, that Lewis knew nothing about a fight or altercation until much later. Georgia's felony murder law says that you can face murder charges even if you didn't wield the knife or fire the gun. I would just. News has exclusive information now about the limousine driver at the scene of the murders. Eyewitness News investigates what the driver says he saw. The government has the exclusive story. Looks like Duane Fassett, the driver of his limousine, would be Ray Lewis, his best witness. After all, he was an eyewitness, according to his boss. He did not have a knife. He did not use a knife. He did not engage in a fight. He did not promote in any way a fight. But there is now conflicting information about what the driver actually told the police. Eyewitness News has exclusively learned that the statement contains more bad news for Lewis than good. Sources say the driver confirmed that Lewis did participate in an assault, that he repeatedly hit one of the homicide victims and that based upon what he saw, he would be a reluctant witness against Ray Lewis. Reluctant because the driver is known to be a close friend of Ray Lewis, both personally and professionally. Sources close to the investigation in Atlanta also tell Eyewitness News that they will depend on the limousine driver's statement to them to prove at least a part of their case against Ray Lewis. Dick Elfman, Jay-Z, Eyewitness News. Even though the driver has now returned to Maryland, homicide detectives from Atlanta are still in touch with him here. Well, outside the sports arena, many athletes touched by the endorsements that they do, a form of advertising. It's a multibillion dollar industry. The murder charges that now loom over Ray Lewis could mean big trouble for his endorsements. Experts say his legal problems could be grounds for endorsers to terminate their agreements. Excuse me. Denise Kirk has the story. One night in July of 1991 changed forever the history of two families and made it possible for a new life to enter this world. On a warm July night in 1991, he kissed his parents goodnight and went to bed. Or so they thought. He and a friend were driving on a country road when his friend was driving and lost control of the car. And unfortunately, there was a tree right at the curve. Otherwise they would have gone into the cornfield. But they hit the tree. Jamie was flown from the Eastern shore to shock trauma. His parents and two brothers made the long journey from Oxford to Baltimore by car, hoping Jamie might survive what was surely a fatal head wound at shock trauma. Jamie lived for three days. Finally, the Webb's had to give their consent to discontinue life support. And that was when one of Jamie's brothers spoke up. Bill was the one who sort of reminded us that he was a very good potential organ donor. When we all said, Oh, yes, because it was such a waste. That same night, July 21st, 1991, the phone rings in Cam's vehicles parked in a apartment suffering from kidney failure on dialysis, on the transplant list. She and Jamie were a perfect match. I was excited. I went into the operating room with a smile on my face. Jump ahead. Nine years later, as you can see, the transplant was a success. And that might have been the end of this story, except for something Cam did on the one year anniversary of her surgery. She wrote a letter to the Webb's Dear Mr. and Mrs. Webb. I just celebrated my first anniversary with this. This past week has ended up being the most emotional time of my life. This is one of many things that is helping us to recover from our disaster last year. Cam and the Webb's began a correspondence. Three years ago, Cam married Kevin Finkel, and then with the support of her doctors, she became pregnant. Hello, Jamie. Yes, this is Jamie. And 20 months later, this is Jamie. One came out and said she was pregnant. I was just ecstatic about that. And then the birth announcement came and I just my day was made. From the birth announcement. The Web's learned Cam and Kevin had given their little girl the name that changed forever Cam's life and made all of this possible. And so here we are, five grown ups going a little crazy over this beautiful little girl, a child whose life symbolizes so much more than she can yet understand. Jamie is a girl with three sets of grandparents in Jamie's room. On her dresser sits a tiny picture, a gift from the Webb's. The last picture ever taken of their son. He's a huge part of my life, literally. But I've never met him. He is a part of me. Did you have any sense when you first saw her that your son was there somewhere? Yes. Sure. It's like having somebody else new in the family. It's a wonderful surprise. Are you recovered? I doubt that will ever be recovered. Time certainly helps. And this helps. Yes. Oh, this is wonderful. Sunrise on Sunday morning, 709 Tomorrow, sunset, 533. We're coming back with the first wave forecast in just a few minutes. There's something comfortable about that old familiar routine or habit. Sometimes it's just plain easier, but not always smarter. You see, just because you've always done something one way doesn't mean there aren't other better possibilities. In fact, you could be missing out on some real opportunities. You take auto insurance, for example. Every time that bill comes in the mail, you probably just open it up, reach for your checkbook and pay it without another thought. But you're pretty sure that out there somewhere there's a company that could meet your auto insurance needs better, meet them faster and at least double. Meet them for a lot less of your hard earned money, no matter how long you've been writing the same big checks year in and year out. It makes sense to break that bad habit and shop around. You just might like dealing directly with us much more. Why? There are so many reasons. For starters, you might like saving hundreds of dollars on solid, reliable protection with the AIG Auto Insurance program. It's the reason most of our policyholders switch in the first place. You might even get attached to all the money saving discounts we offer. Most important, if you ever do have an accident, you're sure to appreciate solid protection from one of the largest and most reliable names in insurance and dealing direct is easy. Just pick up your phone and call AIG at 1888 AIG auto. We're always open. That's it. Call 1888 AIG auto. It's a free call. And it's a lovely evening right now. Yes, indeed. But today's sun was strong enough for the big meltdown to begin despite the chilly air temperatures and the warm rays reduced the size of the snow and the ice. And it's definitely a welcome reprieve as people get closer and closer to the curbs in front of their houses as they try to park their cars and actually get a little patience is in order now because the slower this stuff melts, the more it goes to replenish the soil moisture that we lost so much of it during the drought of last summer. So slow melt is good at this point. Yeah, but Pat, I know how you love the way I love them. And I have a word of hope for you. Let me show you my first graphic here, because if you divide the length of the day up into the period of short days and period of long days, Right. Some of the darkest days are over. Yeah, that's what I want to tell you. The darkest quarter of the year has ended. Now, that period when the days are the shortest, if you divide it up into fourths and we're headed into the intermediate February to May period, you see on the right hand side seem to get into the longer days of summer. So there is some hope for the changes that are occurring now to at least bring us longer days. And in fact, looking more closely, our temperature here on Television Hill actually is at 34 degrees, 35 at Rock Hall. And comparable temperatures across the region say our high ended up being 37 degrees and that was a little below normal. So although we had lots of sunshine today, still fairly chilly. But the sunshine, as Pat was saying, goes a way to melt, melting the snow. And that's a good thing. No advisories on the bay right now, but it's going to be fairly windy tonight and tomorrow. Northwest winds 10 to 20 knots and one foot sharp and the water temperature hovering right around the freezing mark. And there is a fair amount of ice in some spots on the bay. So that's probably the only thing that is unusual to be advised about. But again, it is winter time and that's not too surprising. As you look at the national map here, we do see the changes that are occurring. But actually the entire eastern part of the country is relatively storm free, although relatively chilly. You don't see a lot of clouds over in the eastern part of the country. Some storminess out in the mountains of Colorado and, of course, up near the Great Lakes. But, well, look, zooming in more close to home, we don't really have a whole lot of cloudiness to talk about. In fact, it's a good bit of sunshine today. And by Monday, we'll be pushing up toward 50 degrees. So we are indeed going to get at least one period of good thaw coming in at the beginning of the week. But for tonight, then we've got clear to partly cloudy skies on tap, generally clear through the evening hours, maybe a few clouds coming in later on. It's pretty brisk out there, windy and kind of chilly. 26, the overnight low. And for tomorrow, a mix of clouds and sunshine, a seasonable high of 40 degrees in check. The five day forecast, as I said Monday, 48 degrees. That's a pretty good thaw going to occur right there.
