And I'm Jackie Hall. Welcome to City Life. You know, some 8000 years ago, men and women alike discovered a practical use for cosmetics here. Some 8000 years later, we're still trying to get the process right. Well, I'll tell you one thing, Harold. When the rich and famous today want that special look, they turn to the world's best makeup artist. It's Reggie. Well, he's here today on City Line, and he will demonstrate his special talents with a beauty before and after makeover, utilizing his cousin Ruth Barksdale. And we'll have a sense of that demonstration in just a few moments. It's all up next on City Line. Yeah. Duration. Voting is known as the make up artists of the rich and famous. And he's joining us here today on City Line. He's a native Baltimore and he's Mr. Reggie Wills. Reggie, thank you so much for joining us. I'm glad to be back in my old hometown. Great. Good to have you here. It's like it all started here. Oh, great. Oh, since you're talking about how it started, why don't you take us back and let us know exactly how you got into the field And art as a painter. I started working with color, and before you know it, I went from one canvas to another, just like I am my canvas in the studio. I found out I could also work on priming faces and the unique thing about it, it was going from one surface to another. Well, how did you what made you focus on black women at first, though? I mean, what was our special need at that time? For years, black women have been the women of color. And all their lives, they've been trying to find out what color am I? We come in so many different colors.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105580/file/206350#t=90.37,214.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105580/file/206350/transcript/48984/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's sometimes strange to find out what color we really are. We have a discoloration problem. It always happens in black skin. Before you know it, we're one color, light and dark, and we have to work one evening out our skin tones. Since there are so many different hues associated with black people. Do you find yourself having to really load up, I mean, on cosmetics to work from one end of the spectrum to the other? Every time I turn around, I have to have this much makeup. It can come in any kind of capacity whatsoever. But all the time that you start with makeup, you have to start with a skin care regiment, a thing that really works on the whole canvas itself. Let's start with the skin. A moisturizer, a toner and a fade cream, A fade creaming using esoteric. I use all the time. It's been around for years. Is this what you mean by getting even? Getting even if what I'm all about? If you walk into that department store and that lady hands you a color, you want to know exactly what if that color right for you? So many times we walk out and we say to ourselves, Am I really this color? And we find that by not eating out our skin tones, we get home and we turn ashy automatically because we're taking care of our dark tones instead of paying attention to our light tones. So what pre cosmetic, what pre makeup hints do you have for women at home? What should they do to the to their faces to prepare for the cosmetic and look in the mirror? And when you find out what your dark areas are, work on them. Use it as a long term process.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105580/file/206350#t=215.2,307.75"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105580/file/206350/transcript/48984/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Esoterica will lighting the light in the dark areas. If you have that taken care of, you can go right away and start with foundation colors, any kind of lip color and working with colors that work for you. But let's say one thing to ourselves first. Don't you cover up that problem? Let's work on it. So basically, you're talking about enhancing by using makeup simply to enhance as opposed to cover up. Never cover up. Left to me is more if you start with the freshest skin you could possibly start with and the evening is tone you could possibly start with a little bit of color will enhance the whole thing for you with no problems. Since we all have different blemishes that we all want to cover up. Isn't. Isn't it isn't it fair to say that there's no such thing as, like, a universal process for putting on makeup? There is no universal process for putting on makeup. That's why I usually tell women, Stay away from that magazine. You're always telling me that you're really going after what they said in the magazine. Go after what's right for you. So many women say, well, I'm combination skin, I'm not really dry and I'm not really oily. Find out your problems. So many people say to themselves, If I only knew what I need every time I go in front of a new client, the same thing if over and over again, Reggie, what can I do for my skin? Because if you feel comfortable about your skin, you can put anything on it and go right out. No, no, Reggie, I can't believe that you left Little old Baltimore, went directly to New York and became an overnight success. I think the keys to my success, my success is making my client feel really great about who or what she is all about. In other words, when I go to a client who works in a a public professional, I sort of think she must always have herself in front of an audience. She must really pay attention to what her strong points are. If it's your eyes, bring it out. If your nose is the problem, stay away from it. If you punch those eyes up, you will have no problem with anybody distracting from that nose. If those lips seem to be a problem, then leave them alone. Start to work on those cheekbones. Really bring out those cheekbones because we always see what? Stands out first. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. Also, you've changed the whole concept of most people. As you as you said, if they have, like, a problem with their lips. First thing they want to do is cover it up. Actually, you're telling us just the opposite is just the opposite. I've come in so many contact with women, in fact. Is it plastic surgery? I need no where near. When people first saw Oprah on the Academy Awards, the first thing they said she had a nose job. It was my first introduction to introducing her. Look, this was the new Oprah, a sophisticated Oprah. So we started with a skin care system that worked on her skin, because at the television, you go through so many rituals of beating a faith that after a while it had to say, let's help, let's help. I saw everyone in the academy pay attention to one woman, and I was standing beside Elizabeth Taylor, Betty Davis and Oprah within the middle and every guy with on Oprah. Now, let's just talk about just quickly, let's talk about some of the problems. I have a tendency to show fatigue under the eyes, slightly dark, but lines that just show that I'm just so tired. If you have that line problem, it's usually because you are a little tired. What I do is recommend for women who have to be in front of the camera is to get themselves up, work on an exercise, stimulate the blood, go back, even a cold massage, sometimes on the face. Help bring that whole blood felt just to perk up again. What happens? Our blood cells are really tired and they seem to droop out. Face. Wake him up. Let's wake him up. Massages and all. How does that how does one learn all the different applications of makeup? Because for every environment, you need a different makeup for lighting situations, for even the part of the world that you're going to be in daylight. Business situations, evening situations, every day, work world. I mean, what I think that they have to really think about is who they really are. No matter what situation you go in, it calls for a certain look. So don't worry about how much you have to wear or how much you have to have on, worry about how interesting it looks because it is done well. No matter where you walk, you can go from office to nightclub to social affair. I'm surprised that Harold hasn't asked about what you can do for men as well, not necessarily in terms of makeup, but in terms of enhancing. You know that in life. Yes. You know, sunscreen, you know, evening out and stop. Let's stop it. You man. Let's stop talking about you don't want to wear makeup or you don't worry about skin. I've seen men with so many bad skin problems because they refuse to take a regiment treatment. We have the same skin as Jackie. I have the same skin. You have the same skin. What we have to do is go to the treatment. Go to the treatment bar, let you shave and you scrub and you rub and you touch. And no cells are so hurt because men tend to think I can put on a little bit of alcohol and I'll be all right. You better massaged skin with moisturizer. Well, you better make that beard very fall. People always ask me, Where do you get that soft skin? I stay away from shaving as much as I can and go back to it when it's time to do it. Do you actually see a day when men will be using makeup? Guess what the day is here. They already do it. Those photographs that you see are a bunch of lies. We have makeup on a lot of photographs. We have makeup now. Men are walking to the counter. Our secret is out. We'll find out more secrets from Reggie Wells right after these messages. We're excited about having Reggie Wells here today to talk about being the makeup artist to the stars. Let's let's get into some who who had some of those women were and some of the things that you did to highlight the beauty. Well, you know, I don't really think about those women as being stars. I think about them as being women and women that I have to do a job on. And I really put it in my hands. But every time I do that, I think about the woman herself, who she is, what kind of star she is. Okay. Who is some of them? Jody Watley, for instance. Jody Watley. Look at Jody Watley. Eyes. She expressed everything through her eyes. And those eyebrows have a real meaning in itself. If you didn't do anything to Jody, you must bring out her eyebrows, the Grammy Award tonight. I was so excited. I was back there and I was working on a face and all the time Jody just kept crying and good enough for her because I didn't bring anything out with the eyes. I didn't focus a lot of eyeliner. Have any of them become like, depending on you? Because I've seen some pictures, candid pictures of a few of these women without makeup. And every woman I work with, I want them to be dependent on me in some way or another. Really? What about Robin Givens? Robin Givens. There's a beauty for you. Yes, she is. Excitement. And this young youth. I bring out Robin in a different way. She's beautiful. Already thought the left is the best for Robin. Put a little color around her eyes and you have a smile that can't be beat. That brings out an interesting point. Less is best. Do you believe that anybody has a natural look where they can get away with no makeup at all? I think not. Well, I think that if you enhance that, look, you can take just the minimum and work on those points. I mean, if a woman walks down the street and she has all this makeup on and it's really overwhelming, we tend not to look at her. But if she does her eyes and a way and leave everything else along. We're going to take a second look at her because she's brought out a fine point. And that's what we're paying attention to. Now, let's take a second look at him on. My heavens. This, to me, is the most fabulous cover I have ever seen. The woman of Glory. Look at the power behind. Every time a man walks into a studio, it's almost like you better do me right. What I want to do for you is this I introduce new things to them. Do they ever disagree with what you recommend and say, No, that's not me. I don't like it. It's kind of hard to disagree with me on selling power when it comes to convincing you that this is the look you must have. Now, the lady of the hour is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey, who doesn't love Oprah. And that means everybody. I liked it when she was huge. I liked it when she was medium and I love her while she's skinny. How do you think you've been? How long have you been doing Oprah? I've been doing Oprah since the time she entered Chicago. Oh, my. Yeah. What do you do? What do you do to highlight and what's her. What's hers? Her sparkling feature. Her sparkling feature is her photographic ability and her smile. Have you ever seen a woman that can take a smile and just light up the whole world? That's Oprah. I mean, she's really down to earth. I always bring out Oprah. I take her eyes and emphasize just a line are just very simple. So it's all a very personal treatment. You almost get an aura from the person that you're working on and you react to that. Ah, makeup is a very personal statement. It goes into the woman's boudoir. It takes a woman from her everyday situation. It can even bring her up, bring her down or make her feel like she's on top of the world. And that's what makeup should do. Now, that's interesting. So you evidently have developed quite a trusting relationship with the people, the women that you make up because you see them when they're not at their their highest glory as the public generally sees them. Yeah. Yes. All the time that when I walk into a woman's. Private domain. I go in there and think to myself that this is her domain. I'm only here to make her over, to make her better, to make her more exciting. So after we leave there, it's like no question should ever be at. Ruth had really wonderful skin, but she still has the basic problem every woman had. She had discoloration around the eyes and around the mouth. Ruth has been using esoterica. She's been working on fading out her dark spots. And by doing that, she's worked on finding the right color. Look at that really gold tone that she has on her skin. What? That really goal. Look at the bronze I put into her, her cheeks and through the eyes. Ruthie had very round eyes, so I tended to go on top and leave the bottom alone. Oh, fantastic. Now, did you do any contouring, for instance, of the nose or cheeks or whatever? This nose, it's contour it right down to thinner at the end. Ruth tend to get a little wide here. So we tried to camouflage that, and it works well. That's really a big difference she had. Go ahead. How about the career woman who doesn't have time to paint a canvas every morning? Every woman should take 15 minutes to do her own makeup. That's her face. And that's all it takes. She knows it just like she knows her of the back of her hand. She should be able to do it in 15 minutes to ten. Watch her paint this lip just to bring this color out. I can take this brush and go right through it. This is some of the tools women can use.
